A rare day of parity unfolded at the 2026 FIFA World Cup as all four group-stage matches ended in draws, leaving Groups G and H wide open after the first round of fixtures.

Another heavyweight was denied victory as Belgium settled for a 1-1 draw against Egypt in Seattle.
Kevin De Bruyne gave Belgium an early advantage with a trademark strike, but Egypt gradually grew into the contest behind the influence of captain Mohamed Salah. Belgium eventually needed a spark from substitute Romelu Lukaku, whose introduction helped rescue a point after Egypt threatened to pull off a major upset.

Saudi Arabia 1-1 Uruguay (Group H)
Saudi Arabia once again proved it can compete with football’s traditional powers.

Spain 0-0 Cabo Verde (Group H)
The biggest shock of the day belonged to Cabo Verde.
Making its first-ever World Cup appearance, the African nation held European champion Spain to a stunning goalless draw.
Spain dominated possession and territory but repeatedly ran into veteran goalkeeper Vozinha, who delivered one of the performances of the tournament so far. Ferran Torres struck the crossbar while several other Spanish chances were denied as frustration mounted throughout the match.
Even the introduction of young star Lamine Yamal failed to unlock Cabo Verde’s disciplined defense. The debutants nearly produced an even bigger upset with late counterattacking opportunities of their own.
For Cabo Verde, the draw felt like a victory. For Spain, it served as an early warning that reputation alone will not guarantee progression.
