Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have dominated the football world for more than a decade, producing one of the greatest individual rivalries in sporting history.

 

Between them, they have collected countless domestic and international trophies, shattered scoring records and won the Ballon d’Or on numerous occasions. Their rivalry was most intense during their years in Spain, when Messi led Barcelona and Ronaldo spearheaded Real Madrid.

 

Yet while millions of fans have watched the two superstars from afar, a select group of footballers have had the extraordinary privilege of sharing a dressing room with both Messi and Ronaldo.

 

From Real Madrid and Manchester United to Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, these players were able to experience first-hand how two of football’s greatest-ever talents operated on and off the pitch.

 

Here are five notable stars who were teammates with both Messi and Ronaldo.

1. Sergio Ramos

Few players are more closely associated with Cristiano Ronaldo’s Real Madrid era than Sergio Ramos.

The Spanish defender joined Real Madrid in 2005 and spent nearly a decade alongside Ronaldo after the Portuguese superstar arrived from Manchester United in 2009. Together, they became central figures in one of the most successful periods in the club’s history.

Ramos and Ronaldo shared the pitch from 2009 to 2018, winning multiple La Liga titles and, most notably, four UEFA Champions League trophies together. Their partnership helped Real Madrid establish itself as the dominant force in European football, particularly during their unprecedented run of three consecutive Champions League triumphs from 2016 to 2018.

Ramos was not merely a teammate who watched Ronaldo’s greatness from a distance. As Real Madrid captain during the latter part of their partnership, he was one of the Portuguese star’s closest allies in the dressing room.

After leaving Madrid in 2021, Ramos joined Paris Saint-Germain, where he eventually crossed paths with another player who had defined an era: Lionel Messi.

Messi arrived at PSG in 2021 after leaving Barcelona, meaning Ramos and the Argentine were suddenly teammates despite spending years on opposite sides of the fierce El Clásico rivalry.

The Ramos-Messi relationship was particularly fascinating because of their history. Ramos had spent years trying to stop Messi as Real Madrid’s defensive leader, while Messi repeatedly caused problems for Ramos and the Madrid defense.

At PSG, however, they shared the same dressing room from 2021 to 2023.

Ramos therefore experienced both sides of football’s greatest modern rivalry—first playing alongside Ronaldo at Real Madrid, then sharing a team with Messi in Paris.

2. Gerard Piqué

Gerard Piqué also has a unique connection to both superstars, although his relationship with each came at very different stages of his career.

Piqué began his professional career at Manchester United, joining the English club as a teenager in 2004. During his time at Old Trafford, he shared the dressing room with a young Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo was already emerging as one of Manchester United’s brightest stars when Piqué arrived. Under Sir Alex Ferguson, the Portuguese winger developed from an exciting young talent into one of the most devastating attackers in world football.

Piqué was part of the Manchester United squad that won the Premier League and Champions League during the 2007-08 season before returning to Barcelona in 2008.

That move changed the course of his career.

At Barcelona, Piqué became a key member of one of the greatest teams in football history and played alongside Lionel Messi for more than a decade.

From 2008 until 2021, Piqué shared the Barcelona dressing room with Messi, winning numerous La Liga titles, Copa del Rey trophies and four Champions League titles.

The defender was therefore able to experience both sides of the Messi-Ronaldo rivalry from inside the dressing room.

He knew Ronaldo as a teammate during the Portuguese star’s Manchester United years and later spent 13 seasons alongside Messi at Barcelona.

Piqué also faced Ronaldo regularly during the Real Madrid-Barcelona rivalry, making his perspective particularly unique.

3. Ángel Di María

Ángel Di María is another player who had extensive experience playing alongside both superstars.

The Argentine winger joined Real Madrid in 2010 and quickly became an important part of the club’s attack.

At Madrid, Di María played alongside Cristiano Ronaldo from 2010 to 2014.

The pair developed a dangerous attacking relationship, with Di María’s pace, creativity and crossing ability complementing Ronaldo’s movement and finishing.

Their partnership contributed to several major successes, including the 2011 Copa del Rey and the club’s historic 2013-14 Champions League triumph.

Di María was particularly influential during Real Madrid’s Champions League-winning campaign in 2014 and was named Man of the Match in the final against Atlético Madrid.

Years later, Di María reunited with another superstar when he joined Paris Saint-Germain.

Messi arrived in Paris in 2021, giving Di María the opportunity to play alongside his fellow Argentine international at club level.

The two had already shared the pitch extensively for Argentina, but their PSG partnership gave them the opportunity to combine regularly in European club football.

Di María therefore has one of the strongest cases for being a player who truly understood what it was like to play alongside both Messi and Ronaldo.

He spent four years with Ronaldo at Real Madrid and one season alongside Messi at PSG, while also enjoying a long international partnership with Messi for Argentina.

4. Henrik Larsson

Henrik Larsson’s connection to both Messi and Ronaldo came in the final stages of a distinguished career.

The Swedish striker joined Barcelona in 2004 after establishing himself as one of Europe’s most prolific forwards with Celtic.

Larsson played alongside a young Lionel Messi during the Argentine’s breakthrough years at Barcelona.

Messi was still developing into a first-team star at the time, but Larsson had the opportunity to witness the beginnings of what would eventually become one of the greatest careers in football history.

Their time together was relatively brief, lasting from 2004 to 2006, but Larsson played an important role in Barcelona’s 2005-06 Champions League triumph.

He famously came off the bench in the Champions League final against Arsenal and provided two assists as Barcelona completed a comeback victory.

Years later, Larsson made a brief return to Manchester United on loan during the 2006-07 season.

It was there that he became teammates with Cristiano Ronaldo.

Although Larsson’s spell at Manchester United was short, he shared the dressing room with Ronaldo during the Portuguese winger’s development into a global superstar.

That means Larsson can legitimately claim to have played alongside Messi before the Argentine reached his peak and Ronaldo shortly before the Portuguese attacker entered his own prime.

5. Achraf Hakimi

Achraf Hakimi is the youngest player on this list and another footballer whose career has brought him into contact with both members of the legendary rivalry.

Hakimi came through Real Madrid’s academy and eventually made his first-team debut for the Spanish giants.

He shared the Real Madrid dressing room with Cristiano Ronaldo during the 2017-18 season, Ronaldo’s final campaign at the club.

Although Hakimi was still a young player trying to establish himself at senior level, being around Ronaldo offered an extraordinary learning opportunity.

That season ended with Real Madrid winning a third consecutive Champions League title, with Ronaldo once again playing a central role.

Hakimi left Real Madrid shortly afterward and eventually joined Paris Saint-Germain in 2021.

That same summer, PSG signed Lionel Messi.

Hakimi consequently found himself playing alongside the Argentine superstar from 2021 to 2023.

The Moroccan full-back became an important part of PSG’s squad and was able to experience Messi’s qualities up close after previously sharing a dressing room with Ronaldo.

Hakimi’s career also highlights how remarkable modern football has become. Within just a few years, a young defender could go from learning alongside Ronaldo at Real Madrid to combining with Messi at PSG.

A Rare Footballing Privilege

Playing with either Messi or Ronaldo would be a career highlight for most footballers.

Playing with both is an extremely rare achievement.

Sergio Ramos and Ángel Di María spent years alongside Ronaldo before eventually joining Messi at Paris Saint-Germain. Gerard Piqué experienced Ronaldo’s early Manchester United years before becoming one of Messi’s longest-serving Barcelona teammates. Henrik Larsson shared a dressing room with a young Messi and later briefly played alongside Ronaldo at Manchester United.

Hakimi, meanwhile, represents the next generation of players fortunate enough to experience both superstars, sharing a Real Madrid dressing room with Ronaldo before becoming Messi’s teammate in Paris.

Their experiences also offer an interesting perspective on the Messi-Ronaldo rivalry. While fans and pundits spent years debating which player was superior, these five footballers did not have to choose.

They experienced both.

They saw Ronaldo’s relentless work ethic, extraordinary athleticism and ruthless mentality up close. They also witnessed Messi’s unique vision, creativity, close control and seemingly effortless ability to change games.

For Ramos, Piqué, Di María, Larsson and Hakimi, sharing the pitch with two of football’s greatest-ever players was more than a remarkable footnote in their careers.

It was a front-row seat to history.
