“Sometimes he tells me F– off” – JJ Redick shares details about his relationship with star LeBron James

Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick offered rare insight into his on-court relationship with superstar LeBron James, revealing that their in-game communication can be blunt but effective as the team continues its push during the NBA season.

Speaking after a recent Lakers win, Redick described how trust and experience shape his exchanges with the four-time NBA champion, emphasizing that James’ basketball instincts often guide critical decisions late in games.

“I’m his catcher. I’ve figured out how to call the pitches,” Redick said. “Sometimes he tells me to f-off and he calls his own pitch, which is fine, too.”

James’ ability to read situations and dictate tempo has long been one of his defining traits, and Redick pointed out that the Lakers benefit from allowing their leader that freedom.

Even when James is not at his physical peak, the Lakers head coach acknowledges that his command of the floor remains a decisive factor.

“Every night he doesn’t have his best stuff,” Redick added. “But he always has enough to win.”

The comments reflect the balance Redick is attempting to strike in his first season at the helm, empowering players while maintaining a structured approach.

For James, now in his 21st NBA season, the latitude to make adjustments on the fly has been a constant throughout his career.

James has continued to produce at an elite level despite his age, contributing across multiple statistical categories while anchoring the Lakers on both ends of the floor. His leadership has been especially vital as Los Angeles navigates lineup changes and consistency issues.

Carlo Bumina-ang seeks to return to win column at ONE Bangkok

Filipino mixed martial artist Carlo “The Bull” Bumina-ang is set to make a bid for redemption when he faces unbeaten Brazilian contender Marcos Aurelio at ONE Fight Night 39 later this month in Bangkok.

The bantamweight contest is part of the stacked card headlined by Rambolek Ajalaboon vs. Abdulla Dayakaev at Lumpinee Stadium on January 23.

Bumina-ang enters the fight coming off a tough setback in his most recent bout when he suffered a submission loss to Elbek Alyshov in November.

The defeat snapped a promising run and has fueled the 31-year-old’s determination to get back in the win column at one of ONE Championship’s high-profile events.

The Brazilian challenger, Marcos Aurelio, presents a significant test for the Filipino veteran. At just 21 years old, Aurelio has compiled an 8–0 professional record, including a recent knockout victory over Andre Rodrigues in September.

Bumina-ang’s path to this matchup highlights a career of highs and lows. Before his loss to Alyshov, he enjoyed a stretch of strong performances in the ONE Championship bantamweight division, punctuated by wins over skilled opponents, including Song Min Kong of South Korea and Argentina’s Mauro Mastromarini via technical knockout.

Before reaching the main roster, Bumina-ang also made his mark on the ONE Friday Fights circuit, where he earned five consecutive victories.

This early success helped establish his reputation as a finisher and led to his promotion within the organization’s premier events.

Alongside the bantamweight MMA clash, fans will see top muay thai and flyweight matchups, including Kongthoranee Sor Sommai vs. Asadula Imangazaliev and Filipino-American Sean Climaco taking on Johan Ghazali.

  • After Trae Young, who’s the next NBA star to get traded?

After Trae Young, who’s the next NBA star to get traded?

The NBA’s landscape today has put a premium on what a player can bring to championship hopes, as seen with the recent trade of Trae Young to the Washington Wizards. The Atlanta Hawks have seen the emergence of Jalen Johnson and the steady presence of Kristaps Porzingis and Onyeka Okongwu. This led to the Hawks parting ways with the star who led them to the Eastern conference finals five years ago.

There seems to be little patience among teams, more specifically the rebuilding teams, to hold on to their aging or young-but-stagnant stars. This is why the NBA trade market this season has seen a litany of rumors swirling from former Finals MVPs and once-projected to be franchise cornerstones. So begs the question: Who’s next after Trae Young?

    Anthony Davis

Davis has been one of the central players in NBA trade rumors even after he was traded by the Los Angeles Lakers to the Dallas Mavericks for Luka Doncic. It seemed that the Mavericks were going on a peculiar and frankly mindless approach to the win-now mentality by getting Davis, who proved to be more injury-prone than Doncic.

With the Doncic trade mastermind, Nico Harrison, gone and the Mavericks shifting to their franchise star Cooper Flagg, all signs point to Davis departing for more title-capable teams that can carry his salary and the injury problems.

    Jonathan Kuminga

When the Golden State Warriors re-signed Jonathan Kuminga this offseason, it wasn’t because they suddenly wanted him to be in their plans in the future (although head coach Steve Kerr did try early in the season), it was to finally shut the door on a long stalemate and hopefully get something in return for the young prospect.

It’s now January and the Warriors are struggling to find momentum. Kuminga’s future in Oakland is more than likely over. It will only be a matter of which package the Warriors will choose. The reason why the Warriors have waited this long to trade Kuminga is simply that they want to get the best deal possible. A failed trade to get Lauri Markannen last season proves that the market for the young forward can net the Warriors important pieces to become legitimate title contenders this season.

    Ivica Zubac

The Los Angeles Clippers are having a rough go of things. A failed farewell tour to franchise legend Chris Paul and a season-ending injury to Bradley Beal have hampered the potential of a talented but aging Clippers team. Stars Kawhi Leonard and James Harden have been brought up in trade rumors in the beginning, but now that they’ve put on stellar performances that ignited a better run of form, it seems that longtime big man Ivica Zubac becomes the most logical players to be traded to hopefully get the team to the postseason.

Zubac has only played in four games of the Clippers’ last 10games, where they have been on fire with a 7-3 record. The emergence of rookie Yanic Niederhauser, who is more versatile and athletic, and Brook Lopez, who isn’t as steady as Zubac in the paint but is a far more lethal shooter, have made Zubac a primary trade piece that can hopefully garner more pieces that will help reverse their 13-23 record this season.

  • South Korean press not open to Kevin Quiambao winning KBL Rookie of the Year award

South Korean press not open to Kevin Quiambao winning KBL Rookie of the Year award

Gilas Pilipinas stalwart Kevin Quiambao has emerged at the center of a growing debate in the 2025–26 Korean Basketball League (KBL) surrounding eligibility for the league’s Rookie of the Year award.

The Filipino, currently playing for the Goyang Sono Skygunners, has drawn both acclaim for his play and criticism from some domestic media figures in South Korea.

Quiambao, a two-time UAAP Most Valuable Player before turning professional, has posted impactful numbers this season and is frequently mentioned among the top candidates for the prestigious award.

His all-around play, scoring, rebounding, and facilitating,  has captured the attention of fans and analysts across the league. However, a faction of South Korean basketball journalists has raised objections, arguing that the Rookie of the Year honor should be restricted exclusively to local Korean players.

The conversation reportedly gained traction after a prominent veteran reporter made comments on a Korean basketball-focused YouTube podcast, asserting that foreign and Asian import players should be ineligible for the recognition.

OKBET is Asia’s most trusted and popular online sports gaming platform. Visit us on OKBET to stay up to date with all sports news from around the world.

The reporter stressed that the award traditionally celebrated emerging homegrown talent, and thus should not go to a player like Quiambao, who entered the league under the Asian Quota system.

The KBL has historically welcomed foreign athletes through the Asian Quota program, intended to elevate competitive standards and diversify the league’s player pool.

Filipino imports such as Rhenz Abando, SJ Belangel, Migz Gozon, Ethan Alvano, and Justin Gutang have all found success in recent seasons, contributing significantly to their respective teams. Meanwhile, last season’s Rookie of the Year, JD Cagulangan, posted notable averages for the Suwon KT Sonicboom.

While the KBL has not yet publicly clarified whether any nationality-based eligibility restrictions will apply, the award announcement is scheduled for the annual KBL Awards Ceremony following the conclusion of the regular season in April.

At that time, league officials will officially name the Rookie of the Year, potentially setting a precedent for how the honor is defined in future import-heavy seasons.

Bustamante’s move comes after a learning-oriented 2025 campaign in the GB3 Championship, where she gained experience against a strong mixed-gender field and adapted to faster, more technically demanding cars.

The 2026 season will kick off with the Eurocup-3 Winter Series, beginning at Portimão’s Autódromo Internacional do Algarve in February, with subsequent rounds at Jarama and MotorLand Aragón.

  • Team Secret goes all-out on Asian rebuild led by Filipino head coach

Team Secret goes all-out on Asian rebuild led by Filipino head coach

Team Secret has officially announced a revamped lineup and coaching structure for its Valorant Champions Tour (VCT) Pacific 2026 campaign, blending talent from across Asia and elevating a Filipino coach to lead the main squad.

Team Secret struggled to find consistent form last year, ultimately finishing near the bottom of the standings in multiple stages of the VCT Pacific, prompting the organization to reassess its competitive direction.

Among the new signings is veteran player Kim “TenTen” Tae-young, a duel-focused competitor with previous experience in Japan’s top VALORANT circuits. His addition brings a proven high-impact playstyle to the team’s firepower.

Joining TenTen is Rizkie “BerserX” Adla Kusuma, a seasoned professional who spent several seasons with BOOM Esports and has showcased versatility at high levels of regional competition.

Complementing the international additions is the retention of core players from past seasons. Kelly “kellyS” Sedillo returns to the active roster, bringing site-control skills and tactical flexibility, while Ko “Sylvan” Young-sub remains anchored in his role, adding stability and strategic execution to Team Secret’s gameplay.

In a noteworthy coaching decision, Team Secret has appointed Filipino veteran Jose “Rbtx” Jamir as head coach of the main VCT squad. Rbtx, who previously guided Team Secret Academy, now steps up to steer the senior roster after demonstrating his leadership in developing emerging talent.

The Academy program, which has previously featured a pipeline of young prospects from Southeast Asia, remains active and continues to play a key developmental role for Team Secret’s broader ecosystem.

  • KBL: Carl Tamayo explodes for 31 as Changwon topples Seoul

KBL: Carl Tamayo explodes for 31 as Changwon topples Seoul

Filipino forward Carl Tamayo scored 31 points to lead the Changwon LG Sakers to an 83–70 victory over the struggling Seoul Samsung Thunders in a Korean Basketball League (KBL) regular-season matchup at Changwon Gymnasium.

Tamayo, who has been one of the most consistent performers for the defending KBL champions this season, tallied 31 points, just six shy of his career high, against a Thunders squad that has had difficulty closing out games this season.

The LG Sakers set the tone early and maintained control in all four quarters, refusing to let Seoul regain momentum at any point.

Changwon improved to 21–8 with the win, keeping pace near the top of the league standings and strengthening their claim as one of the league’s elite teams. This victory also marked their third win in four outings.

Aside Tamayo’s offensive explosion, Changwon received important contributions from veteran big man Assem Marei, who recorded a double-double with 13 points and 16 rebounds.

Marei also chipped in four assists and a steal, providing a balanced effort that complemented Tamayo’s scoring.

For Seoul, the game continued a troubling skid as the Thunders suffered their eighth consecutive loss, leaving them at 9–20 on the season.

Filipino reinforcement Justin Gutang struggled to find his rhythm in Changwon, finishing with just three points in more than 28 minutes of action, along with two rebounds and five assists.

OKBET is Asia’s most trusted and popular online sports gaming platform. Visit us on OKBET to stay up to date with all sports news from around the world.

The only bright spot for Seoul was forward Kerem Kanter, who finished with 40 points and 13 rebounds, but his efforts were not enough to keep the Thunders competitive in the late stages of the game.

Tamayo’s performance continues a pattern of high-level play for the Filipino star in Korea, where he has regularly been among Changwon’s top scorers this season.

His ability to score both inside and from the perimeter has made him one of the focal points of the Sakers’ attack as they pursue another deep run in the KBL.

With the win, Changwon looks to capitalize on its momentum heading into the second half of the season, while Seoul will need to regroup quickly if it hopes to reverse its fortunes and climb back into playoff contention.

Hawks ship Trae Young to Washington for CJ McCollum

The Trae Young era in Atlanta has come to an end.

The Atlanta Hawks have traded Young to the Washington Wizards in exchange for veteran CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert, NBA insider Shams Charania just announced.

Young’s departure comes after Charania announced earlier this week that the Hawks are exploring trade options for the guard ahead of the trade deadline.

The Hawks currently sit at 10th in the Eastern conference standings with a 17-21 record, and have been prioritizing the development of former top overall pick Zacharie Rissacher, alongside Jalen Johnson and Dyson Daniels.

Young last played for Atlanta last December and has been tallying subpar averages this season with 19.3 points and 8.9 assists per game.

Meanwhile, McCollum, 34, has continued to be a lethal scorer so far, averaging 18.8 points per game, while also being better on the defensive end than Young.

The Wizards, who boast a record of 10-26 and sit at the bottom of the standings, are centering their future around Young and former top pick Alexander Sarr.

  • AJ Manas snags second place in CTPBA Pro Tour Grand Finals

AJ Manas snags second place in CTPBA Pro Tour Grand Finals

Filipino billiards rising star AJ Manas secured a runner-up finish at the 2026 CTPBA Pro Tour Grand Finals on Tuesday night, narrowly falling to Taiwanese veteran Ko Pin-yi in a tightly contested final in Taipei, Taiwan.

The 18-year-old Manas took an early lead in the championship match, racing out to an 8–4 advantage and later extending it to 12–9 in the race-to-13 showdown.

His aggressive and composed play in the early racks gave hope to Filipino supporters in the crowd that he could capture the title.

However, Ko, a 36-year-old Taiwanese cue legend and former world No. 1, mounted a dramatic comeback in the closing stages.

Displaying his vast experience, Ko strung together a decisive 5–0 run to edge out Manas 13–12 and claim the Grand Finals title before the home fans.

Manas, known as “Starboy,” had earlier impressed throughout the two-day event by outplaying several top contenders. He advanced through stacked groups and delivered key victories in the knockout rounds, including wins over local Taiwanese players Lu Hui-Chan and Ko Ping-Han to secure his place in the final four.

The young Filipino’s runner-up finish earned him US $3,175 (around ₱188,000), while Ko’s championship brought him the top prize of US $6,350 (approximately ₱376,000)

Manas’ showing in Taipei reinforces the momentum he has built since bursting onto the international scene. In 2025, he was named MVP of the Reyes Cup, helping Team Asia to victory against the Rest of the World and gaining praise from Philippine pool icons for his poise under pressure.

Despite the heartbreaking one-rack loss in the final, Manas remains a player to watch as he continues his stretch of international competition. He is entered in upcoming events, including the Universal Chinese Taipei 9-Ball Open, where he will continue to face a strong field of global cue athletes.
