    MOA Arena emerges as possible venue for Gilas Pilipinas’ crucial FIBA Qualifiers Window 

    After enduring a difficult stretch in the FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers, Gilas Pilipinas could be set for a much-needed lift when the next window arrives—with the possibility of playing in front of its home supporters at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.


    The potential return to Philippine soil comes at a critical point for the national team, which enters Group E with a 2-4 record and needs every advantage possible as the race for a place in the FIBA World Cup 2027 becomes tighter.

     

    If the reported venue arrangement pushes through, the SM Mall of Asia Arena is expected to host all six Group E games during Window 4, giving Gilas and the rest of the teams a familiar environment for the important stretch of qualifiers.

     

    The move follows the relocation of Windows 2, 3, and 4 of Group C to Prince Hamza Hall in Amman, Jordan on June 29, July 2, and July 5 due to the conflict in the Middle East.

     

    The upcoming window is scheduled to begin on August 27, with Syria facing Australia, Iran meeting New Zealand, and the Philippines taking on Jordan.

     

    The Philippines will return to action on August 28 against Jordan before facing Iran on August 30, two games that could have major implications for Gilas’ qualification hopes.

    A home environment could provide the spark Tim Cone’s squad needs after a challenging run. The Philippines started the qualifiers strongly with two straight victories in Window 1 but has since dropped four consecutive games.

     

    Gilas ended the previous window with a heartbreaking 106-102 defeat to New Zealand, where the team fought until the final minutes, before suffering a difficult 92-49 loss to Australia in Perth.

    Ateneo standout Brian Castro always had Japan in mind as the next destination for his volleyball journey. Now, just after completing his UAAP chapter with the Blue Eagles, the Filipino-American middle blocker is turning that vision into reality.


    Castro is set to become the newest Filipino player to compete in Japan’s premier volleyball scene after securing an Asian import role with Fragolad Kagoshima for the 2026-27 SV.League season.

     

    The move comes at a historic time for Kagoshima, which is preparing for its first-ever appearance in the SV.League after earning promotion to Division 1. 

     

    With the help of VP Global Management and FIVB-licensed agent Alessandro Castro, the former Blue Eagle found an opportunity to continue developing his career against some of the best players in the world.

     

    Castro will become the fourth Filipino men’s volleyball player to make the jump to Japan, following the footsteps of fellow Ateneo standout Marck Espejo, National University star Bryan Bagunas, and Leo Aringo.

     

    Espejo built a strong reputation in Japan after playing for three different clubs before eventually moving to Taiwan’s Professional Volleyball League, while Bagunas became one of the country’s most recognized imports with Osaka Bluteon.

     

    For Castro, their success served as proof that Filipino volleyball players can compete on the international stage.

     

    “They’ve always inspired me ever since I watched them back in their UAAP days. I actually got to play against Kuya Marck [Espejo] last year during our training camp in Osaka when he was with his Japanese team, and it was such a great experience,” he said.

     

    However, Castro understands that stepping into the SV.League will require an entirely different level of preparation. Japan’s volleyball system is known for its speed, discipline, and technical execution, standards that have helped the country remain one of the world’s strongest volleyball nations.

    “Here in the Philippines, it’s a lot faster pace of volleyball. In Japan, it’s even much, much faster. The SV.League, it’s Division 1, so it’s the highest league in Japan and it’s going to have really one of the best talents in the world,” he said.

     

    The opportunity also represents the fulfillment of a personal goal Castro set even before beginning his collegiate career in the Philippines.

     

    After leaving the United States, the middle blocker envisioned spending two seasons with Ateneo before taking his talents overseas—and Japan was always the destination he wanted.

     

    “Before I left the U.S., I was telling myself that my plan is to play for Ateneo for two years and then play overseas. And I specifically said to myself, I’m going to play in Japan. No matter how long it takes me, I’m going to play in Japan. To do it right after Ateneo, it’s a surreal experience,” he said.

     

    Beyond personal growth, Castro also sees the move as an opportunity to carry the name of Philippine volleyball abroad.

     

    “I’d like to represent this country well and represent, you know, everyone, the volleyball community, the sports Philippines community. I’m going to be there to represent you guys as much as I can.”

     

    Aside from Castro, three more international reinforcements will join the club, including Finnish national team middle blocker Petteri Tyynismaa, Canadian national team opposite Christopher Byam, and outside hitter Jesse Elser. 

     

    With Kagoshima set to begin its historic SV.League debut in October, Castro now prepares for a new challenge—one that places him alongside the Filipino players who helped open the door and gives him the chance to create his own mark in Japan.

    Australia’s defense didn’t just stop Gilas Pilipinas from scoring—it dictated everything the Philippines tried to do on the floor, and Dwight Ramos believes that was the deciding factor in the Boomers’ commanding 92-49 victory in Perth.


    The Filipino swingman said Australia’s relentless full-court pressure prevented Gilas from ever settling into its offense, leaving the team scrambling to beat the defense before it could even think about creating quality scoring opportunities.

     

    “Australia had amazing pressure up the court, giving us trouble. It was very difficult. We had a lot of turnovers in the backcourt and then when we were able to get across halfcourt, shot clock was low, forced us to bad shots, and then obviously throughout the game it wears us down,” Ramos said.

     

    The constant pressure took its toll on the Philippines, which committed 19 turnovers that Australia converted into 30 points, allowing the hosts to seize complete control of the contest.

     

    Even amid Gilas’ offensive struggles, Ramos finished as the team’s top scorer with nine points. However, the 26-year-old endured a difficult shooting night, connecting on only four of his 16 attempts as Australia’s defense made every possession a challenge.

     

    The Philippines showed resilience early and stayed within striking distance, entering halftime trailing by just 14 points.

     

    Veteran center June Mar Fajardo responded after being held scoreless against New Zealand, contributing eight points, seven rebounds, three assists, and two blocks to anchor the Philippines inside.

    Mike Philipps also delivered one of his best outings in the qualifying window, finishing with six points and 12 rebounds while battling Australia’s frontcourt.

    Team Philippines could not have asked for a better opening day at the IWF World Youth Weightlifting Championships in Cali, Colombia, with 15-year-old Alexsandra Ann Diaz delivering a historic performance that announced her arrival among the sport’s brightest young talents.


    Competing in the newly introduced women’s 48-kilogram division, Diaz swept all three gold medals while rewriting the record books, giving the Philippine team an early boost in the prestigious international tournament.

     

    The Zamboanga City standout, who is the niece of Olympic champion Hidilyn Diaz-Naranjo, successfully embraced the challenge of moving up in weight after previously competing in the lighter division. Her dominance was evident from start to finish as she posted lifts of 77 kilograms in the snatch, 98 kilograms in the clean and jerk, and 175 kilograms in total.

     

    Those marks earned her gold medals in all three events while also establishing new world youth records in the clean and jerk and total lift. Diaz surpassed the previous world standards of 97 kilograms in the clean and jerk and 173 kilograms in total for the new 48kg weight class.

     

    She came within touching distance of completing a sweep of all three world records, missing the snatch standard by just one kilogram after finishing with 77 kilograms.

    The performance continues an impressive rise for Diaz, who captured the girls’ 45kg title at the 2025 World Youth Championships in Lima, Peru. In that tournament, she claimed gold in the snatch with 70 kilograms and total lift with 152 kilograms, while settling for bronze in the clean and jerk after lifting 82 kilograms.

     

    Her transition to the heavier class has already paid dividends following her bronze-medal finish in the 48kg division at the 2025 Asian Youth Games in Bahrain.

     

    Romania’s Adelina Lorint finished second in the women’s 48kg competition after recording 74 kilograms in the snatch, 90 kilograms in the clean and jerk, and 164 kilograms in total. Venezuela’s Valeria Osorio del Valle completed the podium with a 162-kilogram total to claim bronze.

     

    The Philippines’ medal haul continued through Jay-R Colonia, who added another gold medal for the country in the men’s 56kg clean and jerk after successfully lifting 140 kilograms.

     

    Colonia also secured two silver medals by registering 109 kilograms in the snatch and a 249-kilogram total, capping another strong international showing after winning bronze at the Bahrain Asian Youth Games.

     

    Althea Bacaro likewise contributed to the Philippine campaign in the women’s 44kg division. She earned a silver medal in the clean and jerk with an 80-kilogram lift and took bronze in the total with 140 kilograms, built on a 60-kilogram snatch effort.

     

    By the end of the opening day, the Philippines had collected four gold medals, along with multiple silver and bronze finishes, placing the national team in an excellent position as the World Youth Championships continue in Colombia. Diaz’s record-breaking performance, however, stood as the defining moment of the day, highlighting the emergence of another promising Filipino weightlifting star on the world stage.

    The Philippines is looking beyond individual medals as it assembles a men’s artistic gymnastics squad capable of competing on the biggest stages in the world.


    Carlos and Eldrew Yulo will headline the national team for the Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan, where the country’s campaign carries significance far beyond the continental meet. 

     

    According to Gymnastics Association of the Philippines (GAP) president Cynthia Carrion-Norton, the long-term objective is to build a team strong enough to qualify for the Olympic Games.

     

    The Yulo brothers have become the centerpiece of that vision following their historic showing at the 13th Senior Artistic Gymnastics Asian Championships. Carlos captured the gold medal in the men’s floor exercise, while younger brother Eldrew earned the bronze in the same event, marking the first time Filipino siblings shared the podium in the continental championships.

     

    Carrion believes the younger Yulo has only begun to scratch the surface after making an impressive transition to the senior ranks.

     

    “We’re very, very proud of them. And they’re already qualified for the world, which is wonderful. They don’t have to go through all this other process. So now they can compete in the World Championship to qualify for the Olympics,” Carrion said.

     

    While Carlos has already established himself as one of the world’s premier artistic gymnasts, Carrion said the two-time Olympic gold medalist has embraced a bigger mission—helping elevate the entire Philippine program rather than focusing solely on his individual success.

     

    “For sure, he’s (Carlos) the one who wants it very badly. He wants it as a team. He says he wants us to come in as a team. And he wants us to be in the Olympics as a team. That’s why we have to make sure that our team is strong,” Carrion said.

    That objective also explains why Carlos skipped the 33rd Southeast Asian Games last December after organizers implemented a rule allowing artistic gymnasts to win only one apparatus title. Instead, the country’s focus has shifted toward competitions that contribute to the broader Olympic qualification process.

     

    The Asian Games present another crucial step in that journey. Under the competition format, only five gymnasts are allowed per national team, making every roster spot vital as the Philippines attempts to secure one of the coveted team berths for the Olympic qualification pathway.

     

    “In these Asian Games, they’re only going to accept five Asian teams. I feel good that we can make it in one of the teams. And if you are one of the teams, then you go to the Olympics. Imagine to have a team for the Olympics with Carlos. Carlos also would like his people to be with him, even though they will be all around,” she added.

     

    Joining Carlos and Eldrew on the Philippine squad are Miguel Besana and Filipino-American Zachary Nunez, while the fifth and final roster spot remains undecided. Carrion-Norton revealed that the federation is still pursuing Troy Nuesca, but if that option does not materialize, Ace de Leon is expected to complete the lineup.

     

    The Philippine men’s artistic gymnastics team will compete from September 21 to 25 at the Rainbow Hall of the Nagoya City General Gymnasium, where the country’s rising generation of gymnasts hopes to take another significant step toward turning its Olympic team aspirations into reality.

    After years of falling just short of the podium’s highest step, eGilas Pilipinas finally turned heartbreak into history.


    The Philippine Men’s National NBA 2K team completed a long-awaited breakthrough by winning its first-ever eFIBA World Finals Season 4 championship, sweeping Turkiye in the best-of-three title series on Sunday to deliver the country’s maiden world title in the competition.

     

    The victory also earned the Filipinos the tournament’s $20,000 grand prize, capping off a campaign that showcased preparation against the world’s best virtual basketball teams.

     

    Composed of Miguel “MiguelCarlo” Hubillar, Chris “Vio” Briones, Kenneth “Clue-” Gutierrez, Joshua “JMACC” Machado, and Prich “DonP” Diez, eGilas closed out the championship with a convincing 68-58 victory in the deciding match.

     

    The Philippines had previously settled for multiple fourth-place finishes at the eFIBA World Finals, making this breakthrough even more meaningful for a program that had steadily established itself among the world’s elite.

     

    That hunger was evident from the opening day of the tournament as the Filipinos dominated the group stage by defeating France, 64-53, Algeria, 73-52, and Germany, 72-45 before eliminating Lebanon, 67-58, in the upper bracket semifinals. 

     

    They then carried that momentum into the finals against Turkiye, finishing the tournament with just one game lost throughout the entire event.

    According to head coach Nite Alparas, the team’s determination to finally bring home the championship never wavered.

     

    “Actually sobrang locked in talaga ng team from the start palang ng season na to. Lahat gutom manalo. During this whole tournament alam namin na iisa lang ang goal naming lahat. At yun ang maiuwi ang gold,” Alparas said.

     

    Preparation also played a major role in the team’s success. Alparas revealed that every night in Qatar was spent breaking down film and developing strategies tailored for each opponent.

     

    “Since day 1 na dumating kami dito sa Qatar, every night we spend 3 hours just to plan and review the games of our opponents. Then nung nakarating kami sa grand finals we know na kaya namin mauwi yung championship para sa Pilipinas,” he said.

     

    The Philippines’ dominance was likewise reflected in the tournament’s individual awards.

     

    Hubillar was named the Most Valuable Player after averaging 24.0 points and 7.4 assists per game, orchestrating the team’s offense throughout the tournament. Meanwhile, Gutierrez anchored the defensive end and earned the Defensive Player of the Year award after averaging 3.1 steals per game.

     

    Machado also received international recognition after securing a spot in the All-Star Five, averaging 11.0 points and 1.7 steals per game. He was joined by Hubillar and Gutierrez on the elite team alongside France’s Xmambaout and Turkiye’s Canboymm.

     

    Turkiye finished as runners-up, while France claimed third place. For eGilas Pilipinas, however, the tournament represented more than a championship—it marked the country’s arrival as the new standard in international NBA 2K competition, finally converting years of persistence into a historic world title.

    The preparations will take the Filipinas across four continents before they arrive in Brazil, where the FIFA Women’s World Cup will be held from June 24 to July 25, 2027. The campaign will culminate in a four-to-six-week training camp in the host nation to help the squad acclimatize before the tournament begins.

     

    “Every camp and every opportunity we’ve got is strategically organized in a way so we’re going to be ready for this World Cup,” Torcaso said.

     

    The next phase of that journey has already begun with a training camp in San Diego, where the Filipinas tested themselves against club sides San Diego Wave and Albion San Diego. 

     

    Torcaso also made it clear that competition for World Cup spots remains wide open. Aside from evaluating players based in the Philippines, the Australian coach intends to closely monitor Filipinas competing in leagues across Southeast Asia—including Myanmar and Taiwan—as well as those playing professionally in Europe.

     

    “I want to make sure that we give everyone an opportunity to be part of this World Cup, and I don’t want to miss out on anyone. Every player, regardless if you’re in the Philippines or playing in Myanmar or playing in Europe somewhere, I want to give everyone a chance,” he said.

    The Filipinas booked their place in the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup after defeating Uzbekistan, 2-0, in the inter-confederation playoff during the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup in Gold Coast, Australia.

    Beyond the Asian Games, the Filipinas will remain active throughout every FIFA international window. Their schedule includes matches in South America in October, fixtures in the Asia-Oceania region later in the year, participation in the prestigious Pinatar Cup in Spain in February 2027, and the home-and-away Olympic Qualifying Tournament in April 2027 before making the final trip to Brazil.

     

    Torcaso also credited the Philippine Football Federation for providing full support throughout the build-up, allowing the coaching staff to execute a comprehensive preparation plan with the resources needed to compete against the world’s elite.

     

    “Coach Torcaso’s preparation framework reflects a deliberate, intensive approach which PFF believes is essential to competing at the highest level,” PFF president John Anthony Gutierrez said.

     

    With nearly a full year of international competition, scouting, and player evaluation ahead, the Filipinas are entering a new chapter—one focused not on earning a World Cup berth, but on building a squad capable of making a deeper impact when they return to the global stage in Brazil.

    After falling short in the PBA Season 50 Commissioner’s Cup, the Phoenix Super LPG Fuelmasters are determined to make a stronger push in the upcoming Governors’ Cup, which officially tips off on July 10.


    One of the team’s key players, Phoenix guard Ricci Rivero, enters the season-ending conference carrying bigger expectations after showing flashes of becoming one of the league’s premier local scorers.

     

    His performance in the Commissioner’s Cup drew praise from Fuel Masters head coach Charles Tiu, who believes Rivero is beginning to embrace a larger responsibility within the team’s system.

    “Ricci’s been getting there. He knows the role I have for him and what I expect of him so I’m hoping he’ll be up for the challenge,” Tiu said.

     

    Rivero carried much of Phoenix’s offensive workload throughout the previous conference, delivering timely scoring performances whenever the team needed a lift.

     

    “Obviously, I want him to be a bit more consistent. That’s a challenge for him if he really wants to be considered as a star of this league, he has to be that on both ends,” he added.

     

    Unfortunately, Rivero’s campaign was cut short after suffering a finger injury, forcing him to miss the latter stages of the import-laden tournament.

     

    “He’s shown flashes of what he can be but he also showed areas where he’s just okay but hopefully, he shows that he can be consistent.”

     

    For Tiu, consistency remains the final piece for Rivero to elevate his game to another level.

    Rivero is expected to spearhead Phoenix’s backcourt once again alongside Tyler Tio, while former NBA veteran BJ Johnson takes over as the Fuel Masters’ import for the Governors’ Cup.

     

    Another boost for the Fuel Masters is the return of veteran big man Justin Chua, who rejoins Phoenix after spending the past several seasons with TNT Tropang 5G.     Beyond the scoring numbers, Rivero also made his presence felt in the Best Player of the Conference race, finishing among the leading local performers in the statistical standings despite missing games because of injury. 

     

    His all-around contributions on offense and defense have reinforced the coaching staff’s confidence that he can become one of the franchise’s cornerstone players if he sustains that level of play throughout an entire conference.

     

    As the Governors’ Cup approaches, Phoenix hopes greater continuity and improved health will translate into better results after its Commissioner’s Cup campaign ended earlier than expected.

     

    With Johnson expected to anchor the import duties, Chua’s expected defense and rebounding and the backcourt tandem of Rivero and Tyler Tio leading the locals, the Fuel Masters believe they have enough firepower to compete for a deeper playoff run in the PBA Season 50 Governors’ Cup.
