    PVL teams’ offseason latest signings ahead of the 2026 On Tour 

    As the 2026 PVL On Tour approaches, teams are no longer waiting for the action to begin before making their statements. The offseason has become a battleground of its own as franchises reshape their rosters, bringing in proven veterans, and former rivals to create stronger title contenders.

     

    The biggest movement came after the Cignal Super Spikers stepped away from the league, opening the door for several of their key players to find new homes. Their former stars have become among the most sought-after names in the market, with teams hoping that experience from a silver medal campaign can immediately translate into success.

     

    Akari Chargers

     

    The Akari Chargers added former Cignal Super Spikers outside hitter Tin Tiamzon, who brings experience and offensive firepower from her previous PVL stint. They also secured libero Ann Monares from the Farm Fresh Foxies, giving Akari another defensive option, while middle blocker Sharya Ancheta joined from Galeries Tower to strengthen their frontline.

     

    The team also made bold roster decisions by parting ways with Dani Ravena, Max Juangco, Bea Bonafe, Joan Doguna, and Steph Bustrillo.

     

    Furthermore, Akari did not select any players in the 2026 PVL Rookie Draft after skipping both rounds, meaning their offseason focus remained on veteran acquisitions and experienced players.

     

    Capital1 Solar Spikers

     

    Capital1 made one of the biggest moves of the offseason after adding two of the league’s most impactful players.

     

    The Solar Spikers landed former Cignal stars Vanie Gandler and Erika Santos. Gandler, an outside hitter known as one of the league’s top young talents and was recognized as the 2026 PVL All-Filipino Conference MVP.

     

    Santos, meanwhile, arrives with her own winning credentials after being named the 2025 PVL On Tour MVP. Her addition gives Capital1 another reliable scoring option.

    The team also welcomed veteran setter Jaja Maraguinot, who returns after a six-month break following her stint with Nxled.

     

    With three high-level additions, Capital1 is shaping up as one of the teams expected to make a major jump.

     

    Choco Mucho Flying Titans

     

    Choco Mucho strengthened its defensive identity by adding one of the most decorated liberos in Philippine volleyball.

     

    The Flying Titans acquired Dawn Macandili-Catindig from Cignal, a veteran defensive specialist and former national team player known for her elite floor defense.

     

    They also added Jewel Encarnacion, another former Cignal player who brings youth and power to the lineup, along with veteran spiker Ivy Perez, who is set to join her seventh PVL team.

    The additions are expected to give Choco Mucho a deeper defensive structure as they continue building around their core.

     

    The team also parted ways with Tia Andaya, who decided to step away from volleyball after one season with the Flying Titans.

     

    Creamline Cool Smashers


    The defending champions, Creamline added former Cignal opposite hitter Erin Pangilinan, who gives the team another attacking option, along with outside hitter Ishie Lalongisip, another former Cignal player known for her scoring ability. The Cool Smashers also secured setter Donna Paralejas to add depth in the playmaking.

     

    With its championship core intact, Creamline’s additions provide more flexibility as the team looks to remain among the league’s elite.

    Farm Fresh Foxies

     

    Farm Fresh focused on adding experience to its roster by acquiring two former Cignal players.

    The Foxies signed veteran middle blocker Roselyn Doria-Aquino, who brings years of experience and net presence. They also added libero Buding Duremdes, giving Farm Fresh another defensive weapon as they aim to continue their rise in the league.

     

    Nxled Chameleons

     

    Nxled landed two major names that immediately upgraded its lineup.

     

    The Chameleons acquired veteran setter Gel Cayuna, a multiple-time PVL award winner who brings leadership and playmaking experience. They also added middle blocker Jacqueline Acuña, who provides size and blocking strength at the net.

     

    Both players came from Cignal’s successful run, where they helped the team secure a silver medal finish before the franchise made a leave of absence from the league. Their arrival gives Nxled more stability as the young franchise continues to build.

     

    PLDT High Speed Hitters

     

    PLDT also took advantage of the offseason movement by adding multiple pieces.

     

    The High Speed Hitters acquired free agent outside hitter Joan Monares, middle blocker Winnie Bedana from Galeries Tower, and former Cignal middle blocker Jessa Ordiales.

     

    The new additions add more depth to PLDT’s rotation and give the team additional options heading into the 2026 PVL on Tour.

     

    Galeries Tower Highrisers and Zus Coffee Thunderbelles

     

    Unlike other teams making major changes, Galeries Tower Highrisers and Zus Coffee Thunderbelles have yet to announce new signings.

     

    Both teams will enter the next phase of preparation with their current rosters while monitoring possible additions.

     

    With the PVL becoming more competitive every season, the 2026 On Tour will showcase more than just new faces — it will feature new identities. Teams are no longer relying only on established stars, they are building deeper lineups designed to survive the long grind of professional volleyball.

    Germany has already qualified for the Round of 32 after winning its opening two matches. Die Mannschaft dismantled Curacao 7-1 before edging Ivory Coast 2-1 to take sole possession of first place in Group E with six points. With their upcoming match, Germany aims to maintain their perfect record.

    Japan vs Sweden (Group F)

    Hall of Fame inductee Onyok Velasco believes Olympic boxing gold is within Philippines’ reach

    After the Philippines first stepped onto the Olympic stage, boxing remains the sport that has carried much of the country’s medal hopes — and Onyok Velasco believes the long-awaited gold breakthrough is within reach.

     

    Since the country’s Olympic debut in 1924, the Philippines has collected 18 medals in the competition, with 10 of those coming from Filipino boxers. Among the fighters who came closest to delivering the country’s first boxing gold was Velasco himself during the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

     

    At just 22 years old, Velasco entered the light flyweight final with history within reach. Standing across from him was Bulgaria’s Daniel Petrov, but after the final bell, the judges awarded the bout to Petrov, 19-6, leaving Velasco with a silver medal.

     

    While many questioned the result, the scoreboard officially recorded Velasco as a silver medalist — a finish that still stands as one of the Philippines’ most memorable Olympic boxing performances.

     

    Decades later, Velasco’s impact on Philippine sports was recognized when he was inducted into the Philippine Sports Hall of Fame as part of the “Magnificent Seven.” He was joined by his brother Roel Velasco, who captured bronze in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.

    The “Magnificent Seven” was also included Paralympic bronze medalist Adeline Dumapong-Ancheta, basketball great Mon Fernandez, tennis standout Cecil Mamiit, multi-sport athlete Bea Lucero-Lhuillier, athletics legend Isidro Del Prado, and the late Eduardo Pacheco of basketball and football.

     

    For Velasco, the missed opportunity in 1996 is no longer a source of regret. Instead, he sees it as a sign that the country’s first Olympic boxing gold is a goal the current generation can finally achieve.

     

    The Philippines has continued to build its boxing legacy after Velasco’s run. At the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, three Filipino boxers reached the podium, with Nesthy Petecio and Carlo Paalam winning silver medals and Eumir Marcial earning bronze.

     

    The momentum continued at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where Petecio secured another bronze medal alongside fellow boxer Aira Villegas.

     

    With the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028 approaching, Velasco remains convinced that the breakthrough moment for Philippine boxing is coming.

     

    “Sa totoo lang talaga, magkakaroon tayo ng Olympic (gold) sa boxing. Hindi ko lang alam kung itong Olympics, basta magkakaron din,” Velasco said.

     

    The former Olympian also reminded the country’s fighters to focus on the opponent rather than outside distractions when chasing victory on the biggest stage.

     

    “Wag niyo isipin yung mga officiating, isipin niyo talunin yung kalaban niyo. Kumbaga sa laban, parang wala nang bukas. Huwag niyo na isipin yung sunod na araw. Pati yung unang laban mo. Kasi pag natalo ka, wala na eh,” the silver medalist olympian said.

     

    Looking back at his own journey, Velasco expressed gratitude for being included among the country’s sporting legends.

     

    “Talagang napakasaya karena napasama po ako dito sa Hall of Fame. Di ko naman akalain na makasama po ako dito. Talagang nagulat ako na napasama ako,” Velasco said.

     

    After leaving his mark on Philippine boxing history, Velasco now shifts his focus to the athletes who continue the mission he started — bringing home the country’s first Olympic boxing gold.

    Four mentors who guided their teams to the top of collegiate volleyball will take center stage as they receive recognition at the Collegiate Press Corps Awards Night presented by Strong Group Athletics on June 29 at Discovery Suites Manila in Ortigas, Pasig.

     

    The honorees represent the champions of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

     

    Bannering the group is De La Salle University’s Ramil de Jesus, who added another chapter to his legendary career by bringing the Lady Spikers to their 13th women’s volleyball championship.

     

    De Jesus will be named UAAP Women’s Volleyball Coach of the Year after La Salle produced a historic campaign in UAAP Season 88. The Lady Spikers completed a perfect 16-0 season and finished the year by defeating two-time defending champion National University in the finals.

     

    The achievement, highlighted by the historic “Sweep 16,” also gave La Salle a chance to rewrite an old chapter. After falling short in Season 76, the Lady Spikers finally brought the crown back to Taft Avenue in dominant fashion.

    Another championship story came from Letran’s Mayeth Carolino, whose return to the school nearly three decades after her playing days resulted in a title-winning run.

     

    Carolino, who previously helped the Lady Knights win championships as a player in 1997 and 1998, once again found herself celebrating with Letran — this time as head coach.

    In the men’s division, National University continued its unmatched run under Dante Alinsunurin. The veteran mentor will be recognized as the UAAP Men’s Volleyball Coach of the Year after leading the Bulldogs to their sixth straight championship. NU defeated Far Eastern University in the Season 88 finals, securing the program’s eighth title in what has become an era of dominance.

     

    The Bulldogs also extended their incredible streak of reaching 11 consecutive UAAP Finals appearances, further establishing themselves as the benchmark in men’s collegiate volleyball.

     

    For College of Saint Benilde’s Arnold Laniog, the championship carried a different meaning — ending years of waiting.

     

    A longtime part of the Blazers’ volleyball program as both player and coach, Laniog guided the Blazing Spikers to the NCAA Season 101 men’s volleyball crown, closing the door on a nine-year championship drought.

     

    His breakthrough title earnedco him the NCAA Men’s Volleyball Coach of the Year award, recognizing his role in bringing Benilde back to the top.

     

    From La Salle’s unbeaten run to NU’s continued dynasty, Letran’s comeback story, and Benilde’s long-awaited return to glory, the four coaches represent the different paths that lead to a championship.

    Philippine League of Legends team secures Esports Nations Cup slot after qualifier run

    The Philippine team is set to return to the international esports stage after the country’s League of Legends squad fought through a challenging Southeast Asia/Oceania qualifier path to secure a place in the Esports Nations Cup in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

     

    The Esports Foundation (EF) confirmed on Tuesday, June 23, that the online regional qualifiers have concluded, with the Philippines claiming one of the region’s two available League of Legends slots for the global competition scheduled from November 2 to 29.

     

    The road to Riyadh was far from easy for the Filipino lineup. After suffering an early setback in the upper bracket, the team responded with a strong lower bracket campaign, overcoming Guam, Australia, and Singapore to keep its international hopes alive.

     

    That comeback secured the Philippines a place among the world’s top national teams that will compete in the upcoming tournament.

     

    Representing the country are Reven Lhi “Relhia” Aloi as top laner, Joshua “Devoured” Escucharo as jungler, Cherv Zildjan “Cherb” Dorado as mid laner, Kyle “Dawn” Somera as ADC, and Jan Edward “Cresho” Hortizuela as support. Ralph Andrei “Leathergoods” Llabres will guide the squad as coach.

     

    The qualification represents another major step forward for Philippine League of Legends esports, giving local players the opportunity to test themselves against international contenders on one of the biggest competitive stages.

     

    The League of Legends event at the Esports Nations Cup will begin on November 21, with the championship match scheduled for November 29.

    While the national team prepares for Riyadh, the League of Legends Filipino teams is also receiving another boost through the return of the League of Legends Championship Pacific (LCP) 2026 Wild Card.

     

    The tournament will provide Filipino organizations with another route toward the region’s premier competition, the LCP, where teams compete for opportunities to reach global events such as the Mid-Season Invitational (MSI) and the League of Legends World Championship (Worlds).

     

    The 2026 Wild Card format will begin with a two-day single-elimination Open Round before advancing teams enter a double-elimination Knockout Round under Fearless Draft rules.

     

    Regional winners and the Last Chance Qualifier champion will then battle in the LCP Wild Card Playoffs from October 3 to 6. The eventual champion will earn the region’s lone opportunity to enter the LCP Promotion Series.

     

    The Philippines has already seen success through the Wild Card route, with Inferno Esports making a breakthrough last year. The Filipino squad defeated teams from across Southeast Asia before beating Thailand’s Full Sense in the finals to reach the promotion tournament.

     

    The next Philippine LCP Wild Card qualifier will open registration from July 30 to August 12. The Open Round is scheduled for August 15 to 16, while the Knockout Round will run from August 20 to 23.

     

    With two major international pathways opening up, Philippine League of Legends continues to build momentum, giving local players more chances to compete and represent the country on the global esports stage.

    PSFI president Paolo Tancontian confident of improved showing as Asia-Oceania Sambo Championships kicks off

    For the first time, the Philippines is stepping onto the continental sambo stage not just as a competitor, but as a host nation.
     
     
    More than 400 athletes from 22 countries have arrived in Manila for the 2026 Asia-Oceania Sambo Championships, turning the Ninoy Aquino Stadium into the center of one of the biggest martial arts events from June 25 to 28.
     
     
    Beyond the medals at stake, local organizers see the tournament as an opportunity to showcase the country’s rapid rise in a sport where many rivals have decades of history behind them.
     
     
    Leading that ambition is Pilipinas Sambo Federation Inc. (PSFI) President Paolo Tancontian, who hopes the home-court advantage can help the national team improve on its fourth-place overall finish from last year’s championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
     
     
    “Yun sana pinagdadasal namin. Sana malagpasan namin yung ating fourth place overall last year. So yun sana, sana hopefully, if God permits. Sana mas maraming gintong medalya ang mabigay natin sa bansa,” Tancontian said.
     
     
    The federation chief highlighted how far Philippine sambo has come despite being relatively young compared to many of the sport’s traditional powerhouses.
     
    “Imagine bago palang tayo dito sa larangan ng sambo, yung ating mga competitors ay like 80 years, 60 years, 50 years. Tayo ay sampung taon palang pero nakakapagsabay tayo,” he added.

    At the forefront of the Philippine campaign is Sydney Sy, currently ranked World No. 1, a five-time World Sambo Championships bronze medalist, and a three-time Asian champion.

     

     
    Sy enters the tournament as the defending gold medalist in the women’s +80-kilogram sports sambo division after capturing the title during the 2025 edition in Uzbekistan. Her presence gives the host nation one of its strongest medal hopes heading into the competition.
     
     
    “Sabi ko nga kay Sydney, pahinga ka. Kailangan magpa-condition para makuha niya, ma-defend niya yung kanyang champion (gold) sa Asia and Oceania,” Tancontian said of his daughter.
     
     
    The federation has also opened opportunities for promising competitors from various regions, including Davao City and other parts of Mindanao, to gain valuable international exposure.
     
     
    After meeting the team before the tournament, Tancontian expressed confidence in the athletes’ readiness and enthusiasm.
     
     
    “They’re very excited. Na-feel ko talaga yung kanilang energy. And yun, ganado sila na makipag-compete ngayon sa Asia-Oceania. We have 21 [members of the] national team. And mayroon tayo mga hindi national team but they are also champions sa nationals. So itong mga athlete na ito, co-compete sa youth and juniors. And malaki din ang kanilang pag-asa na makauwi din na medal,” he said.
     
     
    The level of competition is expected to be among the toughest in the region, with many world champions and elite international athletes participating because the tournament carries Class A ranking status.
     
     
    “Actually, this is a rank tournament. This is a class A tournament. So mostly ang mag-compete dito yung mga world champion din. So, gusto ko ma-experience nila, makita nila ng ating mga kababayan kung gaanong kalakas, gaanong ka-intense itong sambo,” he said.
     
     
    Medals will be contested across youth, junior, and senior divisions for both men and women. The youth category, featuring athletes aged 16 to 18, will compete exclusively in sports sambo. Junior athletes aged 18 to 20 and senior competitors aged 18 and above will battle in both sports sambo and combat sambo events.
     
     
    Sports sambo matches will follow a repechage format, allowing athletes defeated by eventual finalists to remain in contention for bronze medals. Combat sambo, meanwhile, will use a direct knockout system.
     
     
    The event has also received strong backing from Philippine sports officials. Philippine Sports Commission Chairman Patrick Gregorio recently joined Sambo Union of Asia and Oceania Secretary General Suresh Gopi in inspecting the Ninoy Aquino Stadium ahead of the tournament.
     
     
    For Tancontian, however, the significance of hosting extends beyond podium finishes. He believes bringing the championship to Philippine soil can inspire greater public interest in a sport that continues to gain momentum across the country.
     
     
    “Isa sa mga reason bakit tayo nag-host para mapakita natin sa ating mga kababayan kung gaano kalakas ang ating mga atleta sa sambo,” he said.
     
     
    As the country’s best sambo athletes prepare to test themselves against some of the world’s top competitors, the championship offers the Philippines a chance not only to chase medals but also to demonstrate how far its program has progressed in just a decade on the international stage.

    POC formally suspends PNVF, declares recent leadership election invalid following FIVB sanction 

    The Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) now finds itself increasingly isolated after the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) formally enforced the consequences of an international suspension imposed by the sport’s global governing body.


    The move marks another significant setback for the federation, which is already dealing with a funding freeze from the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and an ongoing investigation by the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) into alleged governance violations.

     

    POC President Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino announced on Wednesday that the PNVF’s suspension automatically took effect following the FIVB’s decision to sanction the federation on May 29.

     

    According to Tolentino, the international body’s action was imposed under Article 13.1.1 of the FIVB Disciplinary Regulations and remains linked to an ongoing investigation being conducted by the independent FIVB Ethics Panel.

     

    “The suspension comes automatically from the international federation’s suspension of its national federation,” said Tolentino.

     

    The suspension effectively strips the PNVF of its standing within the POC, preventing the federation from participating in official Olympic committee functions, including attendance at the General Assembly.

     

    Beyond the suspension itself, the POC also questioned the legitimacy of the federation’s recent leadership transition, where Frank Lao assumed the presidency from Tonyboy Liao.

    Tolentino made it clear that the election would not be recognized by the Olympic body, citing procedural shortcomings in the conduct of the vote.

     

    “Their latest election, for the POC, is invalid. There was no notice to the POC and no observer from the POC,” he said.

     

    The development further complicates the leadership situation within Philippine volleyball, with both the federation’s international standing and internal governance now under heightened examination.

     

    Earlier, the PSC had already halted funding support to the PNVF amid concerns similar to those now being investigated at the international level.

     

    While the suspension remains in place, the POC is awaiting recommendations and decisions from the Ad Hoc Committee established by the FIVB to oversee volleyball affairs in the Philippines during the federation’s suspension period.

     

    The matter was discussed during the POC board meeting attended by secretary-general Atty. Wharton R. Chan, second vice president Rep. Richard Gomez, treasurer Dr. Jose Raul Canlas, auditor Jose Donaldo Caringal, Athletes Commission representative Jessie Khing Lacuna, and board members Ferdinand Agustin, Leonora Escollante, Alexander Sulit, and Alvin Aguilar.

     

    With sanctions now coming from both domestic and international sports authorities, the future direction of Philippine volleyball remains uncertain as stakeholders await the outcome of the FIVB’s ongoing governance review.

    Behind every championship team is a coach who turns talent into trophies, and this year, three of collegiate basketball’s finest tacticians are set to be recognized.


    De La Salle University’s Topex Robinson, University of Santo Tomas’ Haydee Ong, and San Beda University’s Yuri Escueta will be honored as Coach of the Year at the 2026 Collegiate Press Corps (CPC) Awards Night presented by Strong Group Athletics.

     

    The annual celebration, scheduled for June 29 at Discovery Suites Manila in Ortigas, Pasig, will shine the spotlight on the coaches whose leadership helped define UAAP Season 88 and NCAA Season 101.

     

    While championships are often remembered through memorable shots and standout performances, Robinson, Ong, and Escueta built their title runs through preparation, resilience, and strategic adjustments that guided their teams through the most crucial moments of the season.

     

    Robinson’s recognition comes after orchestrating one of the most satisfying redemption stories in recent UAAP history. The De La Salle Green Archers reclaimed the men’s basketball crown after overcoming a difficult path to the championship.

     

    Before reaching the Finals, La Salle had to survive a Final Four showdown against top-seeded National University despite facing a twice-to-beat disadvantage. The Green Archers then went on to defeat defending powerhouse University of the Philippines in a hard-fought three-game championship series, delivering Robinson his second UAAP title as head coach.

    In the NCAA, Escueta once again demonstrated why San Beda remains the gold standard of collegiate basketball.

     

    The Red Lions strengthened their historic legacy by sweeping archrival Colegio de San Juan de Letran in the NCAA Season 101 Finals. Despite losing the services of star scorer Janti Miller in Game 2, Escueta successfully adjusted his rotation and game plan, helping San Beda secure its 24th men’s basketball championship.

    The future of Philippine sports took center stage in Tagaytay as Olympic Day 2026 transformed the CT Velodrome into a training ground for young athletes dreaming of representing the country someday.


    Former Gilas Pilipinas standout Larry Fonacier, along with Olympic medalists Carlo Paalam and Aira Villegas, shared their knowledge and experience with the next generation during the celebration held on June 23.

     

    The event, organized by the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC), brought together more than 500 students from three Tagaytay City schools, giving children a chance to experience different sports while learning from some of the country’s top athletes.

     

    Maharlika Elementary School led the participation with 207 students, followed by Carlos S. Batino, Sr. Memorial Elementary School with 175 pupils and Mendez Crossing Elementary School with 131 participants.

     

    The young athletes took part in clinics covering boxing, basketball, football, baseball, taekwondo, and wrestling, with national sports association officials and coaches guiding them throughout the activities at the world-class venue.

    Paalam and Villegas focused on sharing their boxing expertise, while Fonacier helped develop aspiring basketball players as part of the event’s grassroots development program.

     

    POC president Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino emphasized that Olympic Day is more than just a celebration, it is an opportunity to inspire young Filipinos and discover future national team athletes.

     

    “This is a very important date in the Olympic Movement as we celebrate this day when Olympism and the Olympic Games were founded in 1894. It’s a day of fun and sports as we join the whole world in celebrating this day,” Tolentino said.

     

    For Tolentino, introducing sports to children at an early age could play a key role in building the country’s future international success.

     

    “It is with hope that exposing our young students to sports, we can not just encourage more youth to play sports, but we can also discover new talents who we fervently hope could add to the Olympic golds of the Philippines,” he said.

     

    The celebration was attended by several sports leaders, including Philippine Boxing Federation president Marcus Manalo, Wrestling Association of the Philippines president Ali Sulit, Philippine Karatedo Federation president Ricky Lim, and Billiards and Snooker Congress of the Philippines chairman Atty. Wharton Chan.

     

    The annual Olympic Day observance, recognized by the International Olympic Committee every June 23, continues a tradition that began in 1948. It serves as a reminder of the Olympic Movement’s values of excellence, friendship, and respect while encouraging people around the world to stay active through sports.
