    Ateneo players recall Aurora incident as Jared Bahay, Andrew Bongo, and Ian Espinosa share testimonies 

    For the first time, surviving members of the Ateneo de Manila University Men’s Basketball Team publicly detailed their experience during the Aurora team-building incident that claimed the lives of teammates Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili.

     

    Jared Bahay, Ian Espinosa, and Andrew Bongo shared their accounts during a town hall event at the Ateneo campus, recounting how a team activity near the shoreline turned into an emergency situation on June 8.

     

    Bahay said the players entered the activity without their mobile phones after the devices were collected the night before, leaving the team with no way to track time as the camp continued.

     

    Before the activity, the players recalled that former head coach Tab Baldwin asked who among them did not know how to swim. Bahay said Divine Adili was among those who could not swim, while Baterbonia knew how to swim.

     

    The activity involved players jogging in the water near the shoreline as coaches supervised from the beach. However, the conditions changed when stronger waves began pushing the players away from the shore.

     

    “The waves came and we didn’t know that we were being pulled farther out,” Bahay recalled.

    The players said they were later told to move toward shallower waters, but the current made returning difficult.

     

    Espinosa, who was near the front of the group, said he initially did not realize the danger behind him as several teammates began struggling in the water.

     

    “While we were swimming back to the shallow part, we noticed that we were not moving anymore,” Bahay said.

    As the situation worsened, the players tried to assist each other. Espinosa turned back after noticing teammates in trouble and found Kyle Gamber calling for help.

     

    Bahay also recalled facing difficulties himself when his foot cramped while trying to swim back, forcing him to rely on another teammate’s assistance.

     

    When some players finally reached the shore, they realized several teammates were still missing. Bahay described the panic among the group, remembering Kiefer Alas in distress and EJ Kapihe repeatedly saying, “Divine’s gone, bro. Divine’s gone.”

     

    “I thought EJ didn’t see Divine, but in this scenario he already saw Divine floating and he didn’t know how to swim at all,” Bahay said.

     

    According to Bahay, Kapihe attempted to help Adili and bring him back to safety, but Adili was already unconscious.

     

    After understanding the seriousness of the situation, Bahay immediately informed Baldwin, who then looked for assistance.

     

    “Everybody panicked because they didn’t know who was missing,” Bahay said.

     

    Espinosa also shared his memory of seeing Baterbonia during the incident, saying his teammate was swimming breaststroke and calling out.

     

    “Nakita ko si Rene sa likod na (nag-breaststroke at sumisigaw), tapos sinabihan ko na tumalon ka lang,” Espinosa said.

     

    Bahay later recalled that Baterbonia was found floating with purple lips, prompting the coaching staff to perform CPR.

     

    The players said the speed of events left them struggling to understand what was happening. After reaching the shore, some teammates returned to the water area to search for those who had not made it back.

     

    After the incident, 18 players gathered at a swimming pool area where Coach Jon Jacinto Jr. informed them of what happened and allowed them to contact their families.

     

    The players also said Baldwin returned about an hour later after accompanying Adili and Baterbonia to the hospital.

     

    The accounts from Bahay, Bongo, and Espinosa followed the earlier discussion of teammates Kieffer Alas and Sam Reyes during a Let’s Talk podcast with journalist Pia Hontiveros.

     

    The testimonies provided a deeper look into the tragedy as the Ateneo community continues to mourn the loss of two student-athletes.

    The Philippines is bringing a championship-caliber lineup into the international stage as SIBOL’s Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) representatives begin their journey toward the 2026 Asian Games.

     

    The national team is set to compete in the 2026 Esports Asian Games Qualifiers, which will take place at Sentosa, Singapore from June 18 to 21, with a coveted slot in the main tournament at stake.

     

    SIBOL has assembled a roster filled with proven champions and international veterans, creating a lineup that blends experience and familiarity with high-pressure competition.

     

    Leading the squad are players from MPL Philippines Season 17 three-time defending champions Team Liquid Philippines, including Karl “KarlTzy” Nepomuceno, Sanford Vinuya, Jaypee “Jaypee” Dela Cruz, Alston “Sanji” Pabico, and Dave “Teddy” Viana.

     

    KarlTzy returns to the international stage after previous appearances representing the country in the 30th Southeast Asian Games and the 33rd SEA Games Men’s Tournament, where the Philippines secured gold medals in MLBB. 

     

    Sanford, Jaypee, and Sanji also bring SEA Games experience to the national team, having been part of the country’s championship campaigns. Teddy, meanwhile, enters his first-ever Asian Games campaign as a Philippine representative. 

     

    Adding more firepower to the roster is Filipino standout Duane “Kelra” Pillas of ONIC Indonesia. The MPL Indonesia Regular Season MVP earns his first call-up to represent the Philippines, giving SIBOL another elite-level player capable of making an impact on the biggest stage.

    Guiding the team is Allec Monsseur Alvarado, who takes charge as SIBOL’s MLBB Asian Games head coach for the first time. He will be supported by a coaching staff composed of Team Falcons PH coach Francis John Duckey Glindro, Selangor Red Giants coach Michael Angelo Bocado, and ONIC PH coach Paul Denver “Yeb” Miranda.

     

    Team Liquid PH analyst Kim “Dai Ki” Sebanes also joins the national delegation, marking the organization’s first-ever Asian Games selection for MLBB.

     

    A total of 22 national teams have entered the Asian Games Qualifiers and have been divided into four regional groups. Southeast Asia features Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Vietnam, and the Philippines, while West Asia includes Iran, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, and Oman.

     

    Central Asia will be represented by Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan, while South and East Asia consists of Nepal, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, Mongolia, and Pakistan.

     

    The qualifiers will determine the 12 teams that will advance to the MLBB event at the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, scheduled from August 29 to October 1, 2026.

     

    Teams will compete in a single round-robin format, with every match played as a best-of-three series. Standings will be determined through total points earned in the group stage, with qualification slots awarded based on tournament rules. The third-placed teams from Group B and Group D will battle in a decider match for the final place in the Asian Games main stage.

     

    SIBOL will open its Group A campaign against regional rival Malaysia on June 18, 2026, as the squad looks to take the first step toward bringing home another international medal for the country.

    John Amores takes step toward PBA comeback with Titan Ultra tryout 

    John Amores’ basketball journey has taken place far from the bright lights of professional arenas.

    The former Jose Rizal University standout spent his days attending psychological and psychiatric consultations, participating in community outreach activities, and fulfilling the requirements laid out by the Games and Amusements Board (GAB) following the revocation of his professional license.


    Now, the possibility of a return to professional basketball is beginning to take shape.

    Amores recently took a significant step toward that goal when he joined the practice sessions of Titan Ultra Giant Risers, the franchise that inherited his PBA rights following its acquisition of NorthPort.

     

    “Unang araw ng ensayo kasama ang Titan Ultra Giant Risers,” Amores posted on social media on Tuesday.

     

    Titan Ultra head coach Rensy Bajar confirmed the 6-foot-2 guard’s presence during team activities.

     

    “Andito siya ngayon nagta-tryout,” Bajar said.

    The development immediately raised questions about Amores’ eligibility to play, given that his license was revoked following his involvement in a shooting incident in Laguna during his sophomore season with NorthPort.

     

    According to GAB chairman Atty. Francisco Rivera, however, Amores has already cleared the administrative requirements necessary for reinstatement.

     

    “He just needs to provide proof of a standing offer from a PBA team, then we can release his license. He has been cleared for reinstatement following his acquittal in the cases, but with specific conditions,” Rivera said.

     

    The road to this point has been anything but ordinary. As part of his reintegration process, Amores completed extensive community service programs in Laguna. 

     

    He likewise spent time visiting orphanages, including the Child Protection Unit in Barangay Jasaan, Sta. Cruz, where outreach activities became a regular part of his rehabilitation program.

     

    The PBA suspension and the revocation of his GAB license effectively put his basketball career on hold. At the same time, Amores faced legal challenges stemming from the Laguna incident, including attempted murder charges.

     

    According to Amores, those legal cases have since been resolved, removing another major obstacle in his effort to resume his professional career.

     

    With the administrative hurdles largely cleared and a return to organized basketball now within reach, Amores finds himself at a crossroads.

     

     The next chapter of his career will depend not only on securing a roster spot but also on proving that the lessons learned during years away from the game can translate into a meaningful second chance on the court.

    Monares arrives at a pivotal moment for Akari. While the Chargers chose to keep the core of their roster intact, the team also entered the offseason knowing that its defensive unit would need fresh reinforcements.

    What unfolded over five days at the New Clark City Athletics Stadium was more than a national championship—it was, for Philippine sports leaders, a blueprint for the future.

     

    Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman Patrick Gregorio praised the successful staging of the ICTSI Philippine Athletics Championship.

     

    “The seamless organization of this championship shows how far Philippine athletics has come. Patafa has proven that with vision and discipline, we can stage world-class events right here at home,” PSC Chairman Gregorio said.

     

    The inclusion of an Under-20 division alongside the Under-18 and Open/Elite categories became one of the most significant developments of the meet, signaling a clearer pathway for young athletes transitioning to senior competition. 

     

    For Gregorio, the expansion represents a long-term commitment rather than a short-term adjustment.

     

    He described the addition as a “bold investment in the future of our young athletes,” emphasizing how structured age-group competition can help bridge the gap between grassroots programs and elite international participation.

     

    “Patafa has a very good, well-defined grassroots and talent identification program,” he added.

    Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association (PATAFA) president Terry Capistrano echoed that direction, stressing the importance of giving younger athletes more exposure to high-level competition. 

     

    He explained that the Under-20 category was introduced to ensure continuity in athlete development while preparing them for the demands of international competition.

     

    Capistrano revealed a verbal agreement for a dual program between PATAFA and Korea Junior Athletics Federation (KJAF), which includes an open invitation for Filipino athletes to train at world-class facilities in Yecheon, South Korea.

     

    “This partnership with Korea is a game-changer. Our athletes will gain access to world-class training environments, and in return, we strengthen ties with one of Asia’s most dynamic athletics programs,” Capistrano said. 

     

    PATAFA Secretary General Jasper Tanhueco further outlined the vision behind the collaboration, describing it as an exchange program designed to benefit both countries’ young athletes. Under the proposal, Filipino student-athletes will compete in Korea while Korean athletes are also expected to take part in competitions in the Philippines.

     

    The momentum from the championship is expected to carry forward into future international hosting duties, with PATAFA set to stage the Asian Under-18 Athletics Championships in April 2027 at the same New Clark City venue following the National Open.

     

    This year’s edition of the meet also highlighted its growing international footprint, drawing 1,015 athletes, including 95 competitors from nine countries—the United States, Canada, Samoa, Korea, Papua New Guinea, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Chinese Taipei—underscoring the Philippines’ rising role as a regional hub for athletics competition.

    The gap to its nearest challengers remains substantial, with Turkiye at 6,500 points and Indonesia at 6,300, positioning the country as the early favorite heading into the tournament proper.

     

    The scale of the event further raises the stakes, with 107 countries and territories confirmed to participate in the MLBB competition. 

     

    Only the top 16 teams will earn direct qualification to the ENC Finals based on rankings to be finalized on August 2, while the remaining slots will be filled through regional qualifiers and wildcard pathways.

    The Asian Beach Games gold medalist and 33rd Southeast Asian Games bronze medalist, Leonard Grospe once again rewrote the national record books after clearing 2.23 meters to dominate the 2026 ICTSI Philippine Athletic Championships in Tarlac.


    The 24-year-old needed only one attempt to clear the historic height, eclipsing the previous Philippine record of 2.22 meters that he himself established just a month ago. 

     

    What was once considered a breakthrough has quickly become a stepping stone as Grospe continues to push the limits of Philippine high jump.

     

    “Sobrang masaya ako (ma-break ang record) kasi eto po yung standard sa last Asian Jumps,” said Grospe.

     

    His performance did not stop there. With the national record already secured, Grospe raised the bar to 2.25 meters in pursuit of another milestone. 

     

    Although he was unable to clear the height, the attempt reflected the confidence that has grown within his camp following a series of remarkable performances over the past two years.

     

    Watching from the sidelines was coach Sean Guevarra, whose own national record of 2.17 meters stood untouched for 19 years before Grospe finally surpassed it with a 2.20-meter leap during the 2023 edition of the same competition.

    “Actually yung target namin this year is 2.25, kasi nakikita namin sa preparation namin during training na capable siya mag-jump ng ganun kataas,” Guevarra said.

     

    “We aim to stretch that to as high as 2.30 meters para lumakas pa yung kanyang explosiveness,” Grospe’s coach added. 

     

    Earlier this year, Grospe delivered one of Philippine athletics’ biggest international victories when he captured gold at the Asian Beach Games in Sanya, China.

     

     Competing on sand rather than a traditional track-and-field surface, he cleared 2.05 meters to secure the country’s second gold medal of the competition, demonstrating an ability to adapt under unfamiliar conditions.

     

    His latest record also continues a trend that has become increasingly evident throughout the season. Rather than producing one standout performance, Grospe has shown a steady upward trajectory, improving from 2.20 meters to 2.22 meters and now 2.23 meters. Each competition has become another chapter in a climb that appears far from over.

     

    The next challenge awaits at the 20th Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games in Japan this September, where Grospe hopes to test himself against some of the continent’s best. 

     

    Guevarra believes overseas training and intensive camps could help sharpen the technical aspects of his event and unlock even greater heights.

    Just when the TNT Tropang 5G forced a winner-take-all Game 7 in the PBA Season 50 Commissioner’s Cup Finals, another challenge emerged. 

     

    Veteran guard Jayson Castro, whose leadership has helped steady TNT throughout the series, became the latest player to join the team’s growing injury list after suffering a sprained ankle in Game 6 against Barangay Ginebra San Miguel.

     

    Yet if Castro has his way, the injury will not keep him out of the season’s biggest game.

     

    “Che-check lang pero good news, may maga pero ita-try namin makalaro sa Wednesday. Typical na sprained ankle. Namaga siya pero wala namang something na na-damage sa ligaments,” Castro said.

     

    The injury occurred early in the fourth quarter of TNT’s crucial Game 6 victory when Castro landed awkwardly on the foot of Justin Brownlee. Unable to continue, the veteran guard watched the remainder of the contest from the sidelines after finishing with three points, three rebounds, and two assists.

     

    Fortunately for TNT, the loss of one of its leaders did not derail the team’s championship hopes. Chris McCullough delivered a dominant performance and powered the Tropang 5G to a 98-90 victory, allowing TNT to extend the series and set up a final showdown at the Mall of Asia Arena.

    The initial diagnosis on Castro’s ankle offered a measure of relief. While swelling was evident, medical evaluations revealed no major ligament damage, keeping the door open for the 10-time PBA champion to suit up in Game 7.

     

    “It’s swollen, but we will try to give it a go on Wednesday,” said Castro.


    His determination comes as no surprise considering the impact he has made throughout the Finals. After coach Chot Reyes inserted him into the starting lineup three games ago, Castro immediately became a stabilizing force for TNT. 

     

    Beyond his offensive contributions, he was tasked with helping lead the defensive effort against Ginebra guard RJ Abarrientos, a role that proved critical as the series tightened. Castro’s health, however, is only one part of TNT’s growing concern.

     

    The Tropang 5G entered Game 6 already missing Calvin Oftana, who is dealing with a calf strain, and Brandon Ganuelas-Rosser, who continues to recover from an ankle injury. Both remained unavailable as TNT fought to keep its title hopes alive.

     

    “That’s going to be a game-time decision. Our PTs are working double-time on them,” coach Chot Reyes said. 

     

    As much as the team is pushing to get healthy, Reyes acknowledged the reality that comes with preparing for a championship-deciding contest on short recovery time.

     

    “Calvin has a strain so that’s very hard. Brandon, I think, has a better chance because it’s an inversion, an act of sprain. But then the problem is we might have lost Jayson again. Good thing we have one game left because we’re losing men quicker than I’m losing hair,” he said.

     

    With the championship now hanging on a single game, TNT’s focus extends beyond strategy and scouting reports. 

     

    The next few days will be spent racing against time, hoping key pieces can recover in time for one final push. And while Castro’s ankle remains swollen, the veteran guard appears unwilling to let injury stand between him and another opportunity to compete for a title.
