    Rain or Shine refused to let the series slip away, facing a crucial Game 4 in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup semifinals, the Elasto Painters delivered one of their most complete performances yet, overpowering Barangay Ginebra, 97-85, on Wednesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum to knot the series at two games apiece.


    What once looked like a tightening grip for Ginebra has now become a dead-even battle, with the semifinals officially reduced to a virtual best-of-three showdown. 

     

    With momentum suddenly shifting, Game 5 on Friday now carries even greater weight as both teams race for a coveted Finals berth.

     

    The Elasto Painters built a lead that ballooned to as much as 26 points, fueled not by one explosive scorer, but by a collective effort that highlighted the team’s depth on both ends of the floor.

     

    Import Jaylen Johnson anchored the attack with 13 points, 12 rebounds, and four assists, controlling the paint while keeping the offense flowing.

     

    But the biggest difference came from the locals, who consistently answered every Ginebra rally attempt.

    Justin Brownlee finished with 27 points, 10 rebounds, and four assists, but the numbers came through a tough 9-of-20 shooting performance as defenders constantly pressured him.

     

    RJ Abarrientos never found his rhythm offensively, scoring only eight points on eight attempts while struggling from long distance. Scottie Thompson tried to carry the load with 20 points, but his impact elsewhere was limited to just two rebounds and three assists.

     

    Japeth Aguilar was the only other Gin King in double figures, collecting 10 points and 10 rebounds for his second double-double of the series.

     

    Despite a brief late push that cut the deficit to 10, Ginebra could not fully recover from its cold shooting night. 

     

    The Gin Kings misfired from beyond the arc all game long, finishing just 5-of-23 from three-point range for a poor 21.7 percent clip. Now with the series tied 2-2, the semifinal war shifts into its most critical stretch yet.

    For Detdet Pepito, the move to the pros is not about changing who she is, it’s about carrying everything she learned and lived through at the collegiate level into a bigger stage.


    As she officially enters the 2026 Premier Volleyball League Rookie Draft on June 3, the former captain and libero of the UST Golden Tigresses is anchoring her mindset on UST’s mentality.

     

    That identity was built in España — on grit, resilience, and the trademark “puso” culture that defined UST volleyball through years of battles in the UAAP.

     

    “I think ano talaga, small but terrible.”

     

    “Hindi lang naman talaga kami gifted sa height, pero maaasahan mo kami pagdating sa laro, syempre. Talaga ang UST pag naglalaro, puso talaga,” the two-time UAAP Best Libero said.

     

    Now, she hopes that same identity can translate to the professional level. Pepito enters the draft after completing five years with the Golden Tigresses, closing a collegiate chapter where she served as both leader and defensive anchor. But instead of viewing the transition as leaving UST behind, she sees it as extending its legacy.

     

    “Siyempre happy and proud kasi nga tatlo kaming from UST and sana lang mapakita namin kung ano yung mga learnings na nakuha namin from UST,” she said.

    Alongside teammates Jonna Perdido and Xyza Gula, Pepito now steps into a new environment where systems are faster, opponents are stronger, and expectations are higher, but she believes the foundation she built in UST will still hold.

    “Of course hindi ko masyado pini-pressure talaga yung sarili ko. Siyempre, once in a lifetime lang naman ito, so hanggat maaari gusto kong enjoyin,” she said.

     

    Still, enjoyment does not mean losing edge. For Pepito, competitiveness remains non-negotiable — only now, it comes with a sense of pride in representing where she came from.

     

    “Pero siyempre yung pagiging competitive, nandun pa rin. Siyempre pride din ang UST yung dala namin.”

     

    As she prepares for the next step in her career, Pepito is not leaving her identity behind — she is bringing it with her, hoping the same “puso” that defined her years in green and gold will also define her future in the professional game.

    After weeks of uncertainty surrounding their futures, the senior core of the FEU Lady Tamaraws has made a unified decision and that is to stay one more year in Morayta.


    Instead of moving on to the professional ranks or joining a star-studded PVL rookie class, Gerz Petallo, Jaz Ellarina, Aly Devosora, Marga Encarnacion, and Mitzi Panangi have all committed to one final UAAP campaign, giving FEU a rare continuity boost heading into Season 89.

     

    The collective decision comes in the aftermath of a frustrating Season 88 run, where the Lady Tamaraws fell short of a third straight Final Four appearance amid stretches of inconsistency. For the seniors, the unfinished climb proved too significant to walk away from just yet.

     

    Petallo was the first to confirm her return after openly considering whether her collegiate career had reached its end following FEU’s near-miss postseason push. The veteran outside hitter admitted the decision required time and reflection, especially with professional volleyball opportunities within reach.

     

    “Tagal ko po talaga inisip at napagdesisyunan to. But ang masasagot ko lang po is my heart is still [with] green and gold. I’m not yet fulfilled,” Petallo said.

    FEU’s struggles last season weighed heavily on the senior group, particularly the team’s inability to sustain momentum throughout the campaign.

     

    “Masakit po siya para sa akin, yung season po na ‘to na mababa po kami sa ranking. Lalo na hindi nakapasok sa Final Four,” she said.

     

    Still, Petallo emphasized that the experience served as a turning point rather than an ending.

     

    “But yung silver lining po nito, madami po kaming natutunan sa season na ‘to,” she added.

    “Nakita namin na inconsistent po yung laruan. Biglang baba, taas, baba, taas. Yan po yung pag-aaralan namin kung paano namin may iiwasan next season. Paano maging resilient and maging consistent pa,” the senior player of FEU Lady Tamaraws said. 

     

    Petallo will not be leading the charge alone. Ellarina, Devosora, Encarnacion, and Panangi have also confirmed their return, reinforcing FEU’s veteran presence across multiple positions. For Ellarina, the decision was also tied to leadership and unfinished personal growth within the program.

     

    “I’ll play one more year pa po. Di pa po ako ready iwanan FEU,” Ellarina said.

     

    The middle blocker added that she plans to take on a stronger leadership role while regaining her confidence on the court.

     

    “Siguro I’ll start with being a leader talaga, by setting good examples in and out the court para ma-inspire mga kasama ko na mas maging better each day, lalo na yung mga bata,” she said.

     

    “Mas gusto kong maging aggressive and composed at the same time at ibalik din yung confidence na nawala sakin last season.”

     

    With all seniors opting to stay, FEU enters Season 89 with something rare in modern collegiate volleyball, a fully intact veteran core.

    After choosing Bella Belen a year ago, the Solar Spikers head into the 2026 PVL Draft Lottery carrying the highest probability of securing the No. 1 overall pick for the second straight year.


    The PVL confirmed on Sunday the four teams included in this year’s draft lottery ahead of the official draw on Monday, May 25. Capital1 holds the highest chance of securing the top overall pick with four lottery balls, giving the team a 40-percent chance of landing the No. 1 selection. 

     

    Galeries Tower follows with three balls for a 30-percent probability, while Zus Coffee owns a 20-percent chance with two balls. Choco Mucho, entering the lottery for the first time, carries the lowest odds at 10 percent.

     

    Yet despite Capital1 holding the edge, recent history has already shown that the lottery guarantees nothing.

     

    Last season, Nxled entered the draw with the best odds only to slide down to the fourth overall selection, opening the door for Capital1 to jump ahead and select Belen.

     

    Now, the possibility of pairing another elite talent with Belen has become one of the biggest storylines surrounding this year’s draft.

    Philippine Pickleball Federation raises standards ahead of tougher 2026 Pickleball World Cup campaign

    The Philippine Pickleball Federation (PPF) is taking a more deliberate approach as it prepares for what could be the toughest edition yet of the Pickleball World Cup.


    With elite-level international players now expected to join the 2026 tournament, the federation is shifting its focus from simply participating to building the strongest and most cohesive Team Philippines possible.

     

    The Pickleball World Cup 2026 is scheduled from August 31 to September 5 in Da Nang, Vietnam, where the Philippines hopes to improve on its Round of 16 finish in last year’s competition.

     

    But unlike previous editions, organizers have removed restrictions tied to skill ratings and DUPR (Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating), opening the door for more professional-caliber athletes from around the world to compete.

     

    That development alone has significantly raised the stakes. Recognizing the deeper talent pool expected in Vietnam, PPF president Shery Cu said the federation will conduct a more intensive selection process across the Open (19+), Seniors (50+), and Juniors (18-under) divisions to identify players capable not only of competing individually but also thriving in team-based formats.

     

    Cu emphasized that selecting representatives will go beyond simply looking at rankings and ratings.

     

    “We’ve been very selective about which category so we’re going to be doing qualifiers in order for us to really pick the best players that we have to represent the country,” Cu said.

    The qualifiers, according to Cu, will also mirror the actual World Cup setup to help players adjust early to the pressure and rhythm of international team competition.

     

    “We’re not saying that whoever’s top in DUPR, top in skill level, you’re the ones who are going to represent the country,” she said.

     

    Instead of relying purely on numbers, the federation wants to identify combinations that can work together under pressure — an approach that reflects how seriously the Philippines is treating this year’s campaign.

     

    The move to Vietnam is also expected to help the national team in ways beyond competition.

     

    Cu explained that logistical challenges previously prevented some of the country’s intended representatives from joining last year’s event. Holding the tournament in Asia now creates more accessibility for Filipino athletes while minimizing adjustments in travel, climate, and time zones.

     

    With pickleball rapidly expanding across the country, the federation also sees the tournament as an opportunity to uncover more high-level local talent capable of competing internationally.

     

    PPF ambassador Stella Almeda Lopez-Lavy believes the Philippines has already shown enough promise to become a legitimate threat on the world stage.

     

    “I think we did really, really well. We had all together like six medals, three golds. So that says something about the Filipinos. And I think the reason why I’m very excited about this year is because it’s in Asia now,” Lopez-Lavy said.

     

    For Lopez-Lavy, however, talent alone will not be enough if the Philippines hopes to compete against more established pickleball nations.

     

    Beyond individual ratings, she stressed the importance of chemistry, preparation, and long-term development among players selected for Team Philippines.

     

    “I hope when they identify the players that they do make that there is an effort made to actually get the team not just playing together but being coached and developed by somebody,” she shared.

     

    With the competition now happening closer to home, the federation hopes Filipino fans across Asia can help bring energy and support to the national team’s campaign.

    Former Cignal standout Tin Tiamzon joins stacked Akari squad 

    Former Cignal Super Spikers standout Tin Tiamzon has officially joined the Akari Chargers, giving the franchise another experienced weapon as it looks to finally break through in the 2026 Premier Volleyball League season.


    The Chargers announced the signing on social media, describing the veteran outside hitter as “A steady presence and reliable force on the court, Tin is ready to bolster the Chargers for the battles ahead.”

     

    For Akari, the move is more than simply adding depth. It is another statement that the franchise is serious about transforming itself from a middle-of-the-pack squad into a legitimate title contender.

     

    Tiamzon arrives after helping Cignal reach the 2026 PVL All-Filipino Conference finals, where the Super Spikers eventually settled for runner-up honors after being swept by Creamline. 

     

    Shortly after the championship series, Cignal took a leave of absence and amid uncertainty Tiamzon became a free agent.

     

    Her availability became one of the most talked-about developments in the offseason after Cignal temporarily stepped away from league competition, triggering a wave of player movement across the PVL.

    Former teammates Vanie Gandler and Erika Santos transferred to Capital1, while Gel Cayuna and Jackie Acuña moved to Nxled.

     

    Now, Tiamzon lands with an Akari squad already loaded with firepower on the wings.

     

    She joins a deep spiker rotation featuring Ivy Lacsina, Grethcel Soltones, Eli Soyud, Faith Nisperos, and Chenie Tagaod, while also reuniting with fellow De La Salle products Fifi Sharma, Justine Jazareno, and Mars Alba.

     

    The 28-year-old outside hitter brings more than experience. She also carries a winning pedigree built through years inside one of the country’s most successful volleyball programs.

     

    Before returning to the PVL with Cignal in 2025, Tiamzon built her reputation at De La Salle University, where she helped the Lady Spikers win three UAAP women’s volleyball championships from Seasons 78 to 80 under veteran coach Ramil de Jesus. 

     

    She also became a key piece for F2 Logistics, helping the Cargo Movers capture the 2017 Philippine SuperLiga Grand Prix title.

     

    Her professional journey has not been linear. After stepping away from volleyball in 2023 to spend time with family in Canada, Tiamzon returned to competition with Cignal and immediately reminded everyone of her value as a dependable two-way player. 

     

    That veteran composure and versatility could be exactly what Akari needs. The Chargers have remained competitive since entering the PVL in 2022 but have yet to make a deep championship breakthrough, finishing in the middle tier of the standings in all four conferences last season. 

     

    Management has responded by aggressively reshaping the roster, recently parting ways with Dani Ravena and Bea Bonafe while continuing to stack the lineup with established talent.

     

    With Tiamzon now entering the fold, Akari gains another proven scorer capable of stabilizing the floor in high-pressure situations. More importantly, the Chargers are assembling a roster filled with players who understand championship expectations.
