    As Barangay Ginebra shifts its focus toward the PBA Commissioner’s Cup semifinals, the storyline surrounding the Gin Kings is the condition of Justin Brownlee.


    The resident import suffered a hamstring injury during Ginebra’s quarterfinal victory over Phoenix Super LPG last Friday, creating immediate concern ahead of a crucial semifinal showdown against Rain or Shine.

     

    Despite the scare, Brownlee remains optimistic that he will be available when the series opens Wednesday at Ynares Center Antipolo.

    Philippine Sports Commission expands regional training network with gymnastics and swimming center in Dagupan 

    The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) officially launched Dagupan as Pangasinan’s Regional Training Center for gymnastics and swimming, further expanding its nationwide effort to bring high-level sports development directly to local communities instead of concentrating resources only in Metro Manila.


    The project represents a larger shift in Philippine sports — one focused on accessibility, grassroots development, and keeping young athletes connected to their hometowns while still receiving elite-level preparation.

     

    Adding inspiration to the initiative, the Gymnastics Association of the Philippines donated gymnastics equipment that included apparatus previously used by two-time Olympic gold medalist Carlos Yulo.

     

    For young gymnasts in Dagupan, it was more than just new equipment. It symbolized the possibility that world-class athletes can emerge from outside traditional training centers.

     

    The agreement formalizing the new hub was signed by PSC chairman Patrick Gregorio alongside PSC Commissioners Walter Torres and Matthew Fritz Gaston, Division Schools Superintendent Marciano U. Soriano Jr., and Dagupan Youth and Sports Development Commission head Finnela Sim.

    For Gregorio, the mission goes beyond infrastructure.

     

    “We believe talent should be nurtured where it is found. By establishing Regional Training Centers, we ensure that children don’t have to leave their homes just to access world-class facilities. We bring the opportunities to them,” Gregorio said.

     

    The PSC also plans to send national team coaches regularly to Dagupan to mentor both local athletes and coaches, helping ensure that the knowledge and standards used at the national level reach the grassroots.

     

    “Our vision is to decentralize access to premium training. Every province deserves the chance to raise its own heroes and champions, without uprooting kids from their communities. You don’t have to come to us, we will go to you,” Gregorio added.

     

    Dagupan quickly integrated the new center into its summer sports camp programs, where students are now learning the fundamentals of gymnastics and swimming during the school break using upgraded equipment many previously only saw in televised competitions.

     

    According to Sim, the response from young athletes and families has been overwhelming.

     

    “Marami ng interested sa gymnastics. Masaya kami dahil nabigyan kami ng equipment. Before we were just using rubber mats, now the kids can perform advanced skills … without needing to go to Manila,” said Sim.

     

    Dagupan now joins a growing list of PSC-supported Regional Training Centers across the country, including facilities in Bukidnon for boxing, Siargao for surfing and beach rowing, Zamboanga City for weightlifting, Cauayan for rowing, and Candon City for archery.

     

    The expansion is far from over as additional centers are already planned for Passi City, Tayabas, Ormoc City, General Santos City, and Bacolod City as PSC continues pushing for a more inclusive national sports system.

     

    Rather than waiting for future champions to arrive in Manila, Philippine sports authorities are now betting that the next generation of elite athletes may already be training in the provinces.

    The rebuilding of the women’s basketball program under Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas is beginning to take clearer shape, and the federation’s latest move signals a stronger focus on long-term development rather than quick fixes.


    At the center of that direction is Sandy Arespacochaga, who has officially been appointed as the new head coach of Gilas Pilipinas Women Youth.

     

    The veteran tactician now takes charge of the national girls squad preparing for the 2026 FIBA U18 Women’s Asia Cup SEABA Qualifiers set from June 2 to 6 in Bacolod.

     

    Rather than simply filling a coaching vacancy, SBP’s decision appears rooted in building continuity within the national program. 

     

    Arespacochaga brings years of experience from different levels of Philippine basketball, from collegiate success with the Ateneo Blue Eagles to professional experience as an assistant coach with NLEX Road Warriors and TNT Tropang 5G, where he has remained part of the coaching staff since 2019.

     

    He also carries international experience after previously handling Batang Gilas in the FIBA Under-19 World Cup, giving him familiarity with youth development and international competition.

    Preparations for the regional qualifiers are already underway. Earlier, tournament officials and delegates conducted inspections of the competition venues in Bacolod, including the STI West Negros University Gymnasium and the Bacolod City Multi-Purpose Center and Skate Park (MICES Gym), which will serve as the practice facility.

     

    The inspections focused on ensuring the venues meet international standards, particularly in playing conditions, athlete accommodations, and spectator readiness.

     

    While the youth program begins its transition under Arespacochaga, SBP is also expected to announce the new head coach for the senior Gilas Pilipinas Women squad within the next few days.

     

    According to SBP head of communications Carlo Pamintuan, the federation is already in the final stages of discussions. He explained that several terms have already been agreed upon. 

     

    At the same time, Pamintuan clarified speculation involving former Japan women’s national team coach Tom Hovasse.

     

    “SBP had a conversation with former Japan coach Tom Hovasse but never in an interview setting and he never applied. He was not considered, but his input as a reference was valued,” said Pamintuan.

     

    The federation, however, openly acknowledged that Japan’s sustained success in women’s basketball has become one of the benchmarks they hope to follow.

     

    “Japan has a strong women’s program. They’re no. 3 in Asia and we want to emulate the same success as Japan had. We’ve seen their results and the search queued towards that direction,” he said.

     

    For SBP, the recent coaching changes appear less about immediate results and more about creating a system capable of competing consistently in Asia, starting from the youth ranks all the way to the senior national team.

    The veteran playmaker feels the team is finally discovering its identity after an inconsistent elimination round.

    For Yulo, the victory represented more than another medal overseas. It also served as part of a much larger mission, staying sharp mentally and physically as he begins preparing for the long road toward the 2028 Summer Olympics.

     

    The 26-year-old gymnast is expected to stay busy throughout 2026, using multiple international tournaments not only to compete, but to test new skills before Olympic qualification officially begins next year.

     

    Among the major events on his calendar are the 2026 Asian Artistic Gymnastics Championships in June, the 2026 Asian Games in September, and the 2026 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in October.

     

    “Right now, meron akong mga competitions na planong salihan, Asian Games ‘yung pinakamalaki this year, and Asian Championships, and sasali din po ako sa World Championships this year,” he shared.

     

    “Para lang di din po mabakante ‘yung mental health ko pagdating sa competition, kasi kapag masyadong matagal, medyo narerelax din po ako,” the two-time gold medalist olympian added.

     

    Although these upcoming competitions will not yet count toward Olympic qualification, Yulo sees them as critical preparation for the next phase of his career. Every event becomes an opportunity to test upgraded routines, sharpen execution, and maintain the competitive mindset that has carried him to the top of world gymnastics.

    In a season where victories and defeats crossed different courts, the Laput siblings found their own winning moment far beyond the scoreboard. For James Laput, every update from the UAAP carried more weight than any stat line in the PBA.


    Watching his younger sister Shevana Laput lead the De La Salle University Lady Spikers to a flawless UAAP Season 88 campaign and a second collegiate title, James saw not just a champion but the realization of years of expectation, pressure, and persistence finally turning into gold.

     

    For the Magnolia Hotshots big man, the achievement went beyond La Salle’s storied legacy. It became personal validation of Shevana’s journey as an athlete who carried both talent and responsibility on her shoulders.

     

    “All I can say is that she lived up to expectations, and I think she should be called the ‘doe’ because she’s the definition of elite,” he said.

     

    James knows what it means to fall short of a dream season. His own run with La Salle in Season 82 ended in disappointment after a concussion disrupted what was supposed to be a defining campaign. 

     

    That unfinished chapter has followed him into his professional career with the Magnolia Hotshots, where a championship still remains out of reach.

    But while his own journey continues to search for a breakthrough, Shevana’s rise has become a source of perspective rather than pressure.

     

    “She’s proven it time and time and time and time again. She’s just well-deserving of this title and this (Finals MVP) award. It’s just a bonus for her, but it’s huge for the entire Lasallian community,” he said.

     

    Carrying the responsibility of leadership this season, Shevana entered UAAP Season 88 under heavier expectations, but delivered a campaign that defined composure under pressure.

     

    Even in the middle of Magnolia’s own PBA quarterfinal battle against the Meralco Bolts at the Ynares Center in Antipolo, family support remained constant. Despite James and Magnolia falling short in their playoff clash, Shevana was present courtside—turning the tables on roles, this time cheering for her brother from the stands.

     

    James may still be chasing his defining championship moment in the PBA, but in watching Shevana lift hers twice over with La Salle, he has already experienced a different kind of victory—one measured not in trophies, but in pride that runs in the family.
