     At the heart of the stepladder semifinals, the UAAP Season 88 Women’s Volleyball Tournament enters its most unforgiving phase as the Adamson Lady Falcons and UST Golden Tigresses collide in a do-or-die first-step clash on Wednesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.


    For UST, the matchup carries a familiar frustration. The España -based squad has yet to solve Adamson this season, dropping both elimination meetings in straight but tightly contested fashion—27-25, 25-22, 25-12 on March 7, and a closer 27-25, 25-20, 26-24 battle on April 11.

     

    Those games also highlighted the emergence of Adamson’s Season MVP Shaina Nitura, who consistently found ways to tilt momentum, averaging 21.0 points, 10.0 receptions, and 6.5 digs across their six combined sets.

    “Grateful lang ako kasi ‘yong gusto naming makuha (Final Four) is now in our hands, we hold it, and now we focus. Our focus is kung ano ‘yong pinaghirapan ng team… eyes on the prize,” the 21-year-old outside hitter said.

     

    “Now that we’re in the Final Four, it will be harder because these are the best teams. But we won’t back down. We’ll keep working and respond to whatever comes,” Nitura said.

    The inclusion of Sam Cantada in the initial 27-player pool for Alas Pilipinas is both exciting and revealing. It signals belief in her potential—but at the same time, it raises a fair question: is she truly ready for the demands of the senior national team, or is this simply an early investment in a player still in development?


    There’s no denying that Cantada has the skills. In her debut season with National University, the rookie has already delivered standout performances. She opened her UAAP career with 21 points and 14 excellent receptions in a comeback win over UST, immediately showing poise under pressure. 

     

    She followed that up with consistent scoring outings, including a 32-point explosion against UP—one of the highest single-game outputs in the season. These are not ordinary rookie numbers. These are flashes of a future star.

     

    Her experiences backs it up. Cantada entered the collegiate ranks as a UAAP Season 87 Girls’ Volleyball MVP and is on track to be named UAAP Season 88 Rookie of the Year. On paper, that alone justifies her inclusion in the pool.

     

    But the national team is not built on potential alone. The reality is that the Alas Pilipinas pool is filled with players who have already proven themselves at a higher level. 

     

    Names like Angel Canino, Shaina Nitura, Shevana Laput, and Alyssa Solomon bring not just talent, but experience—UAAP championships, individual awards, and even exposure in international or professional settings.

    This is where the gap becomes clear. Cantada’s game, while explosive, is still evolving. She is learning how to adjust to faster systems, more complex rotations, and higher-level decision-making—things that veterans have already mastered through years of competition. 

     

    Even within the UAAP, there are arguments that other players, such as Angge Poyos or seasoned setter Lams Lamina offer either more consistency or experience at this stage.

     

    That doesn’t mean Cantada doesn’t belong, it just means she isn’t fully ready yet.

     

    In fact, her rookie season has shown both promise and areas for growth. While she has delivered big scoring nights, consistency, composure in crucial moments, and deeper understanding of the game remain aspects she needs to refine. 

     

    Moments like her reaction to a controversial net-touch call earlier in the season sparked discussion—not because of lack of talent, but because maturity and awareness are just as important at higher levels.

     

    Even NU’s system reflects this development phase. Surrounded by veterans like Vange Alinsug and Arah Panique, Cantada is still learning how to operate within a structured, championship-caliber team. She isn’t the finished product—she’s part of a system that’s helping shape her.

     

    And that may be exactly why she was invited. The Alas Pilipinas pool is not the final roster. It’s a testing ground. As noted in reports, all 27 players—including Cantada—will still need to prove themselves to the coaching staff before earning a final spot. Her inclusion is less about immediate impact and more about exposure to a higher level of play.

     

    So, is she ready? Not yet, not in the same way the established names are. But she might be close.

    Cantada has the scoring ability, the confidence, and the early success that point toward a future national team mainstay. What she needs now is time—more UAAP battles, more high-pressure situations, and more refinement of her all-around game.

     

    Because making the national team isn’t just about being good. It’s about being ready to keep up and eventually lead against the best.

    The Philippines officially locked in its role as host of the 7th Asian Beach Games in 2028, with Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino formalizing the agreement during a contract signing at the Conifer Resort in Sanya. 


    Standing alongside him was His Excellency Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, representing the Olympic Council of Asia and signaling full confidence in Cebu as the next stage for the continental event.

     

    The moment carried more weight than a routine signing. For Tolentino, it marked the return of the Philippines to hosting a major Asian-level competition after years on the sidelines.

     

    “We would like to congratulate the Philippines for the hosting of the 7th Asian Beach Games in 2028, in Cebu. Wishing you a pleasant stay in Sanya,” said the OCA President.

     

    “That’s why we are very excited for this next edition of the Asian Beach Games so we can showcase our hospitality, friendship, culture and the beauty of Cebu City,” Tolentino said.

     

    Back home, the announcement sets in motion preparations for what is expected to be one of the country’s biggest multi-sport undertakings in recent years. And it won’t come alone.

     

    “We’re very excited for our country to host two big events — the Southeast Asian Plus Youth Games next year in December then after three months, the Asian Beach Games in March 2028,” Tolentino said. 

     

    “Its’ been a long time since hosted Olympic Council of Asia events,” he added. “It’s part of the government’s sports tourism program. So, this is it. We’re excited. Will it cause headaches? I don’t think so. We’re used to hosting big sporting events.”

    Plans are already underway, with branding elements such as logos and mascots prepared for unveiling in June as part of a broader rollout strategy.

     

    “Preparations are already underway for both events. We have the logos and mascots. But we will announce it during a scheduled coordination meeting in June. It’s hitting two birds in one stone, the SEA Plus YG in Manila and then the Cebu Asian Beach Games,” Tolentino added. 

     

    The hosting push is backed by the Philippine Sports Commission under chairman Patrick “Pato” Gregorio and aligned with the National Sports Tourism Inter-Agency Committee, reinforcing the government’s strategy of using sports as a driver for tourism and international visibility.

     

    “The last time we hosted a similar, although different Games, was in 2019 during the Manila SEA Games. The SEA Plus YG is a bigger competition because there will be other countries aside from Southeast Asia,” Tolentino noted.

     

    Even as future plans take shape, the present campaign continues. As of Tuesday afternoon, the Philippines sits third in the medal standings of the ongoing Asian Beach Games, collecting three gold, three silver, and two bronze medals in the 45-nation meet.

     

    The gold medals came from Annie Ramirez and Alexandria Luz Enriquez in jiu-jitsu, and Leonard Grospe in athletics.

     

    Host China leads the tally with 19 gold, 13 silver, and seven bronze medals, followed by Thailand with nine gold, eight silver, and five bronze.

     

    For the Philippines, the numbers reflect a strong showing—but the bigger picture now stretches beyond Sanya. With Cebu 2028 officially secured, the country is no longer just competing on the Asian stage.

    The MPTC Tour of Luzon 2026 officially begins on Tuesday, April 28, with its opening ceremony and team presentation in Calatagan, Batangas, marking the start of a demanding two-week cycling race. 

     

    Thirteen teams, six international and seven local—will roll out their colors, jerseys, and ambitions under the banner of “A Heritage in Motion,” a race designed to test not just speed, but survival across the Philippine landscape.

     

    The evening program, set against the shores of Balayan Bay, will gather 91 riders representing different nations, alongside key figures from Philippine sports and government. 

     

    Among those addressing the peloton are Patrick “Pato” Gregorio, chairman of Tour co-presentor Philippine Sports Commission and widely recognized as the “Father of the Tour of Luzon Revival,” and MPTC Tour of Luzon chief organizer and CEO Arrey Perez.

     

    They will be joined by Philippine Olympic Committee president Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino, who will deliver a message to the riders as the race officially sets its tone. 

     

    The ceremony will also be opened by NLEX Corporation president and general manager Luis Reñon, and attended by Games and Amusements Board chairman Atty. Francisco Rivera, Calatagan Mayor Rico Puno, and Cardinal Santos Medical Center president and CEO Raul Pagdanganan.

    The defending champions extended their unbeaten run to 9-0 and became the first team to secure a playoff spot after back-to-back 2-0 sweeps of Aurora Gaming PH and Twisted Minds at the Victoria Sports Tower in Quezon City. 

     

    With the streak, they are now closing in on the 13-game regular season record set by Northern Lights in Season 16.

     

    At the center of their success is KarlTzy, who continues to deliver standout performances. He earned three Game MVPs in Week 5—two against Aurora and one against Twisted Minds. 

     

    While also leading the league in average gold per minute with 773. He currently ranks second in average kills with 4.19, with teammate Sanford also making his mark among the league leaders.

    Her first season in the SV.League ended with Osaka Marvelous settling for silver after being swept in the Finals by Saga Hisamitsu Springs.

    Solomon, however, watched both matches from the sidelines.

    If her stint in Japan lacked a defining breakout moment, it may have offered something less visible but equally valuable—a recalibration. Removed from the comfort of being a focal point, Solomon experienced the grind of fitting into a winning system, of contributing without guarantees.

     

    The medal she leaves with may be silver, but the experience suggests something still in progress—a player reshaping her game.
