    The PVL On Tour has become more than just a preseason tournament. With revamped rosters, blockbuster transfers, and several contenders looking to establish their identity before the official conference begins, the month-long tour offers players the chance to make early statements.

     

    For some stars, it’s about proving they can carry a franchise. For others, it’s about silencing critics, thriving in a new environment, or showing they still belong among the league’s elite.

     

    Here are five players with the most to prove when the PVL On Tour tips off.

     

    1. Bella Belen (Capital1 Solar Spikers)

     

    Bella Belen enters the PVL On Tour carrying perhaps the biggest expectations of any sophomore in the league.

     

    The reigning PVL Press Corps Rookie of the Year made an immediate impact during her first professional season, proving that her decorated collegiate career at National University could translate to the professional level. Despite joining an expansion Capital1 squad that was still building its identity, Belen consistently showcased the all-around game that made her one of the most accomplished players in UAAP history—scoring efficiently, contributing on defense, and serving as a reliable playmaker whenever the Solar Spikers needed someone to steady the offense.

     

    But this conference presents an entirely different challenge.

     

    For the first time since entering the PVL, Belen is no longer expected to carry the team almost single-handedly. Capital1 made arguably the biggest moves of the offseason by signing former Cignal stars Vanie Gandler and Erika Santos after the Super Spikers disbanded. Both arrive fresh off helping Cignal reach the PVL All-Filipino Conference Finals, instantly giving Capital1 proven firepower and valuable championship experience. The Solar Spikers also strengthened their floor defense by selecting two-time UAAP Best Libero Detdet Pepito in the draft, giving the team another cornerstone for the future.

     

    With the supporting cast now significantly improved, the spotlight shifts back to Belen.

     

    Can she evolve from being a standout rookie into the franchise player capable of leading a legitimate contender? Opposing teams will now have multiple offensive threats to worry about, which should create more opportunities for Belen to showcase her versatility. If she can elevate her leadership while maintaining her elite production, Capital1 could emerge as one of the biggest surprises of the PVL On Tour—and Belen could firmly establish herself among the league’s premier stars rather than simply one of its brightest young talents.

     

    2. Brooke Van Sickle (Nxled Chameleons)

     

    Few players enter the PVL On Tour with bigger expectations than Brooke Van Sickle.

     

    The three-time PVL MVP has already established herself as one of the league’s most complete stars, earning multiple individual awards while helping Petro Gazz become one of the league’s model franchises before the team went on leave ahead of the 2026 season. She also played a major role in Petro Gazz’s championship-winning campaigns, proving she can deliver on the biggest stage instead of simply putting up impressive numbers.

     

    Now comes perhaps the biggest challenge of her professional career.

     

    After becoming the centerpiece of Nxled following Petro Gazz’s disbandment, Van Sickle isn’t just expected to continue her MVP-level production—she is expected to transform an entire franchise into a legitimate title contender.

     

    Nxled aggressively rebuilt its roster by surrounding Van Sickle with familiar faces from Petro Gazz, including MJ Phillips and Myla Pablo, before adding veteran five-time Best Setter Gel Cayuna to orchestrate the offense. On paper, the Chameleons suddenly possess one of the league’s deepest lineups.

     

    But talent alone doesn’t guarantee championships.

     

    Van Sickle has already proven she can win titles. The next challenge is showing she can bring that same championship culture to a completely different franchise. If Nxled finally breaks through and captures its first PVL crown, much of that transformation will begin with its biggest star.

     

    3. Trisha Tubu (Farm Fresh Foxies)

     

    Few players transformed their career trajectory as quickly as Trisha Tubu.

     

    After starring for Adamson in the UAAP, Tubu immediately became one of Farm Fresh’s go-to scorers, bringing her explosive attacking ability and fearless mentality into the professional ranks. 

     

    Throughout the past few conferences, she consistently delivered big offensive performances while embracing the responsibility of becoming one of the faces of a franchise still searching for sustained success. Whether it was carrying the scoring load or stepping up during crucial stretches, Tubu showed flashes of becoming one of the PVL’s next elite outside hitters.

    Now, however, expectations have become much higher.

     

    Farm Fresh is no longer simply looking to stay competitive—they’re aiming to establish themselves as legitimate playoff contenders. The Foxies have continued to invest in their roster and develop a stronger core, placing even greater importance on Tubu’s continued growth. As one of the team’s primary offensive options, she’ll be expected to produce consistently against the league’s top clubs while becoming a more complete player on both ends of the floor.

    While the “Phenom” may no longer dominate matches the way she did during her prime, Valdez continues to evolve her game every conference. Her leadership, floor defense, timely scoring, and ability to steady Creamline during pressure moments were once again evident as the Cool Smashers reclaimed the 2026 All-Filipino Conference championship, extending the franchise’s remarkable dynasty.

     

    With Creamline retaining virtually its entire championship core while adding highly regarded Adamson rookie Barbie Jamili through the PVL Draft, Valdez no longer carries the offensive burden alone.

     

    Instead, her role has become even more important.

     

    She is now the emotional leader, the veteran voice, and the player capable of delivering momentum-changing plays whenever the Cool Smashers need them most.

     

    The PVL On Tour offers Valdez another opportunity to prove that even if she isn’t the explosive scorer fans once knew, she remains an irreplaceable piece of Creamline’s championship formula—and a player capable of helping guide another title run.

     

    5. Savannah Davison (PLDT High Speed Hitters)

     

    Savannah Davison has spent the past two seasons proving she belongs among the PVL’s elite.

    The Canadian-Filipina once again earned Best Outside Hitter honors after another outstanding All-Filipino Conference, leading PLDT to a podium finish while remaining one of the league’s most consistent scorers from opening day until the semifinals.

     

    Yet individual brilliance is no longer enough.

     

    Davison also knows what it’s like to win.

     

    Last year, she helped power PLDT to back-to-back championships in the PVL Invitational Conference and the inaugural PVL On Tour, giving the High Speed Hitters their first major titles as a franchise. Those victories showed that PLDT was capable of beating anyone when everything clicked.

     

    Now comes the difficult part.

     

    The upcoming On Tour presents Davison with a chance to prove those championships were not a one-off run or simply perfect timing. With PLDT entering another season as one of the league’s contenders, expectations have shifted from surprising teams to consistently competing for championships.

     

    The High Speed Hitters have repeatedly come close in the All-Filipino Conference but have yet to reach the Finals despite Davison’s stellar production. If PLDT wants to finally break through in the league’s premier tournament, its biggest star will once again be expected to lead the way.

    The PVL On Tour may not hand out championships, but it often reveals which teams—and which stars—are ready for the long season ahead.

     

    For Bella Belen, Brooke Van Sickle, Trisha Tubu, Alyssa Valdez, and Savannah Davison, this tournament represents far more than preseason games.

     

    It’s the first opportunity to answer the biggest questions surrounding their teams—and themselves.

    Justin Brownlee knows Gilas Pilipinas won’t be walking into ideal circumstances.

     

    Instead of bringing its full complement of stars into the third window of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers, the national team heads to Oceania with a shorter rotation, new faces filling key roles, and two of the region’s toughest opponents waiting on home soil.

     

    For Brownlee, however, the challenge simply demands a stronger response.

     

    The veteran naturalized player will once again carry much of the offensive responsibility as Gilas faces New Zealand on July 3 in Auckland before taking on unbeaten Australia on July 6 in Perth to wrap up the first round of qualifying.

     

    “We’ve got to match their physicality and understand how to play through that,” Brownlee said during Gilas Pilipinas’ open practice at the Playtime Filoil Centre in San Juan.

     

    The assignment has only become more difficult after Gilas lost several key contributors before the trip.

     

    Quentin Millora-Brown, Scottie Thompson, and Calvin Oftana have all been sidelined by injuries, while Kai Sotto remains unavailable as he pursues an NBA opportunity through the Summer League in Las Vegas.

     

    To reinforce the roster, head coach Tim Cone turned to Troy Rosario, Justine Baltazar, and Mike Phillips, who now join June Mar Fajardo and AJ Edu in strengthening the Philippine frontcourt.

     

    Brownlee enters the international window riding the momentum of another historic PBA campaign.

     

    Just days after helping Barangay Ginebra capture the Commissioner’s Cup championship over TNT, the 38-year-old added a record seventh PBA title to his decorated career, further extending his legacy as the league’s winningest import.

    Brownlee also has personal motivation after experiencing an uneven second qualifying window earlier this year.

    Brownlee believes the approach remains straightforward despite the roster changes.

     

    “We just have to be aggressive,” he said. “No matter what they do, as far as how they are guarding us, we just have to stay aggressive.”

     

    Before the official qualifiers begin, Gilas will use its overseas camp to sharpen its chemistry and adjust to the conditions.

     

    The Philippines is scheduled to play exhibition games against New Zealand NBL clubs Manawatu Jets and Franklin Bulls, providing the squad valuable game repetitions before facing the Tall Blacks and the Boomers.

     

    With a revamped lineup and difficult road environment awaiting, Gilas Pilipinas will once again lean on Brownlee’s experience—hoping the same leadership that delivered another PBA championship can spark another memorable run for the national team.

    SBP eyes Bennie Boatwright’s Asian Games debut as naturalization nears completion  

    Gilas Pilipinas’ bid to defend its Asian Games crown may soon receive a major boost—not through a new recruitment drive, but through the final steps of a long-running process.

     

    The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas is now racing against time to complete Bennie Boatwright’s naturalization before the 20th Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan, where the federation hopes the former San Miguel import can finally wear Philippine colors in official competition.

     

    For months, Boatwright’s availability has depended less on basketball and more on paperwork.

    According to SBP Executive Director Erika Dy, the federation is now waiting for House Bill 6639 to officially become law after it secured Senate approval on third and final reading.

     

    “The goal is paabutin siya (Boatwright),” Dy said, referring to the national team’s target of having the 6-foot-10 forward eligible in time for the continental meet.

     

    The legislation now only requires the signature of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. If no action is taken within the constitutional period, it will automatically lapse into law.

     

    “So yan ang hinihintay natin,” Dy explained.

     

    “After nun, mag-oathtaking na siya and makakakuha na siya ng naturalization certificate sa BI (Bureau of Immigration) and yun ang dadalhin natin sa DFA (Department of Foreign Affairs) para ma-issue-han siya ng passport.”

     

    Once those formalities are completed, Boatwright is expected to immediately return to the Philippines.

     

    The 29-year-old University of Southern California product had remained in the country during the PBA Commissioner’s Cup not only to reinforce San Miguel Beer but also to attend Senate hearings related to his citizenship application before eventually returning to the United States to spend time with his family.

     

    “As soon as pwede na siyang mag-oathtaking, puwede na siyang bumalik ulit,” Dy said.

    Boatwright’s arrival would give Gilas another proven scorer with familiarity in Philippine basketball.

    The American big man first suited up for San Miguel in the 2023 Commissioner’s Cup, leading the Beermen to the championship after defeating Magnolia in the Finals. His previous stint in the PBA also works in his favor under Asian Games eligibility rules.

     

    “Ang rule kasi sa Asian Games is there’s no limit sa naturalized players. Ang definition kasi nila dyan is as long as you’re in the country for three years. And alam naman natin si Bennie first played for San Miguel three years ago, so papasok siya dun sa residency rule,” Dy explained.

     

    That eligibility could allow national team head coach Tim Cone to deploy Boatwright alongside longtime Gilas naturalized player Justin Brownlee, potentially giving the Philippines one of its deepest frontcourts in recent years as it seeks to defend the gold medal won in Hangzhou.

     

    Boatwright’s naturalization process could have been completed earlier had his return to the Philippines not been delayed by his commitment with Daegu KOGAS Pegasus in the Korean Basketball League.

     

    Meanwhile, two other Gilas hopefuls are already nearing the finish line.

     

    Naturalized basketball prospects Malick Diouf and Elizabeth Means have already completed their oath-taking ceremonies and are now awaiting the release of their naturalization certificates before securing Philippine passports.

     

    “Tapos na silang mag-oathtaking, so for release na lang sa BI yung naturalization certificates nila, and then diretso na yan sa DFA for their passports,” Dy said.

     

    With the legal process entering its final stage, Gilas Pilipinas now waits for the last signature that could pave the way for another key piece in its quest to remain Asia’s basketball champion.

    Far Eastern University-Diliman and University of Santo Tomas both saw their campaigns in the 2026 NBA Rising Stars Invitational end in the group stage at the OCBC Arena, but not before showing they belonged on an international stage.

     

    Both squads opened the tournament by making emphatic statements.

     

    The Baby Tamaraws overwhelmed Singapore’s Hwa Chong Institution, 89-24, behind another balanced effort from their Gilas Youth standouts, while the Junior Growling Tigresses comfortably handled Mongolia’s Royal International School, 75-45, to immediately place themselves in contention for semifinal spots.

     

    Those convincing victories set up winner-take-all group finales against two of the tournament’s unbeaten teams.

     

    UST found itself within striking distance until the final seconds before absorbing a heartbreaking 81-78 defeat to Australia’s Rowville Secondary College.

     

    With the Junior Growling Tigresses trailing by six points in the closing moments, Sofia Petalcorin drilled a clutch three-pointer to trim the deficit to three.

     

    Rhiane Perez then created one final opportunity by forcing a turnover from Bridgette Kata, but her fast-break layup rolled off the rim. Lea Pinuela secured the offensive rebound, yet time expired before UST could attempt another shot.

     

    The loss allowed Rowville to finish atop Pool B after completing a perfect group-stage sweep.

     

    Earlier, the Australian school had also defeated Royal International School, 73-48.

     

    The Baby Tamaraws faced a similar uphill battle later in the day against Japan’s Tottori Johoku High School.

    After trailing by nine points with under two minutes remaining, FEU-D launched one final rally, cutting the deficit to four after JJ Dagcutan converted a putback from a JB Cagurungan miss with just 17 seconds left.

     

    The comeback, however, stopped short.

     

    A pair of missed free throws by Dwyne Enriquez prevented the Baby Tamaraws from applying more pressure before Yuki Yamasaki calmly knocked down his free throws to seal an 81-75 victory that sent Tottori Johoku into the semifinals as Pool D champions.

     

    Despite the disappointing finishes, several Filipino standouts delivered throughout the tournament.

     

    Pinuela and Petalcorin carried UST with 16 points apiece in its battle against Rowville, while Perez flirted with a double-double after posting eight points and 12 rebounds. Lhian Arabi also anchored the interior with seven points and 13 rebounds.

     

    For FEU-D, Cagurungan and Prince Cariño once again led the offense with 16 points each against the Japanese side, while Cariño added eight rebounds. JA Lopez chipped in 10 points.

     

    Both players had already set the tone during the Baby Tamaraws’ dominant tournament opener, combining for 43 points against Hwa Chong after Cagurungan scored 22 and Cariño added 21.

     

    UST likewise received another all-around effort from Perez in its opening victory, where she collected 19 points and 14 rebounds, while Jesabel Anacan contributed a 13-point, 10-rebound double-double.

     

    Although neither Philippine representative advanced to the knockout stage, their performances reinforced the growing competitiveness of Philippine high school basketball against established programs from Australia, Japan, and across Asia—valuable experience that could pay dividends for many of these players as they continue their development on bigger stages.

    The experienced European tandem quickly reminded everyone why they entered as one of the favorites. With two WTA doubles titles already built on their partnership, Mihalikova and Nicholls relied on their polished teamwork to dictate the match from the baseline and at the net.

     

    After six tightly contested games left the opening set tied at 3-3, the second seeds shifted into another gear, stringing together three straight games to claim the opener before taking command early in the second set with a 3-1 lead.

     

    From there, Eala and Williams struggled to find the sustained momentum that fueled their opening-round victory.

    Even so, the tournament offered plenty of positives for the unlikely duo.

    For most players, winning a championship comes with a chance to slow down, celebrate, and finally catch their breath.

     

    For RJ Abarrientos and Troy Rosario, it meant packing their bags for national team duty.

     

    Just days after helping Barangay Ginebra end its three-year title drought in the PBA Season 50 Commissioner’s Cup, the two Gin Kings traded championship festivities for Gilas Pilipinas practice, joining the national squad as preparations intensified for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers.

     

    The transition from champions to national team players happened almost instantly.

     

    Rather than extending the celebration following Ginebra’s dramatic seven-game Finals victory over TNT, Abarrientos and Rosario reported for Gilas duties on June 22, becoming part of a squad now preparing for difficult road assignments against New Zealand and Australia.

     

    For Abarrientos, the decision required little thought.

     

    “Unang-una, hindi ka mapapag-no kapag tinawag ka ng Gilas Pilipinas at para maglaro sa bayan,” he said.

     

    “There’s no reason para magpahinga at ilaban itong window na ito.”

    “Hindi lahat ng players ay nabibigyan ng pagkakataon na magsuot ng jersey at i-represent ang kanilang bansa,” Abarrientos said on playing for Gilas.

     

    “Very blessed, thankful ako na part pa rin ako dito sa Gilas with the other guys.”

    “Sobrang blessed kasi I was part of the Gilas two windows na practice player and to be called up for the Final 12 ay isang malaking karangalan,” Rosario said.

    “Medyo nag-e-enjoy pa ako sa pagse-celebrate ng championship sa Ginebra,” Rosario said.

    “Pero may call eh. Kailangan kong i-postpone muna ‘yung celebration to focus sa preparation dito sa upcoming window.”

     

    The sacrifice highlights the challenge many Gilas players face—balancing club commitments with the responsibility of representing the country.

     

    Now in Brisbane, Australia, Gilas is undergoing an overseas training camp designed to help the team acclimatize before taking on two of the toughest opponents in the region. The Philippines faces New Zealand in Auckland on July 3 before traveling to Perth for a showdown against Australia on July 6.

     

    For Abarrientos and Rosario, the champagne celebrations have already been replaced by scouting reports, practices, and preparation.

     

    The championship may have been won, but another challenge has already begun.

    What began as a leap of faith from the United States to the Philippines has now come full circle for Tia Andaya.

     

    The Filipino-American setter officially announced her departure from Choco Mucho on Wednesday, ending a journey that was fueled by a desire to reconnect with her roots and pursue a dream of eventually wearing the national team colors on the international stage.

     

    “Maraming salamat, Choco, at maraming salamat, Philippines,” said the Filipino-American setter.

     

    Andaya arrived in the country carrying both pedigree and promise. A product of Gonzaga University and Central Washington University, she entered the 2025 PVL Draft as one of the more intriguing prospects and was selected seventh overall by Choco Mucho.

     

    But while the move opened the door to Philippine volleyball, carving out a larger role proved difficult.

     

    The 25-year-old spent much of her stay learning behind veteran playmakers Deanna Wong and Alina Bicar, with opportunities coming sparingly across two conferences. Though her minutes were limited, Andaya remained part of a Flying Titans squad that consistently contended near the top of the league standings.

     

    Her move to the Philippines was never solely about club volleyball.

     

    Andaya also joined the Alas Pilipinas pool under then-head coach Jorge Souza de Brito, hoping to contribute to the national team program. Yet international competition remained out of reach as eligibility issues tied to her continued connection with USA Volleyball prevented her from representing the country in official FIVB-sanctioned events.

    Despite the obstacles, Andaya views her time in the Philippines as a meaningful chapter rather than an unfinished one.

     

    “It truly was an unforgettable journey. The road wasn’t always smooth, but I wouldn’t change it for the world,” Andaya said.

    Her departure also comes as Choco Mucho enters a new phase at the setter position. The Flying Titans have already moved to reinforce their playmaking corps by selecting Tin Ubaldo with the No. 3 overall pick in the latest PVL Draft and bringing in veteran setter Ivy Perez through free agency ahead of the upcoming PVL On Tour.

     

    For Andaya, however, the story is less about statistics and playing time and more about the experience of embracing a new home, reconnecting with Filipino fans, and chasing a dream that brought her across the Pacific.

     

    Though her stay lasted only a season, the journey left an imprint on both player and supporters alike.
