    A deeper understanding of his role is beginning to shape Quentin Millora-Brown into a more confident presence for Gilas Pilipinas as the team prepares for the next phase of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers.

     

    After entering the national program on short notice in the previous window, Millora-Brown now arrives with greater familiarity and a clearer sense of purpose. 


    The big man is expected to reinforce the Philippines’ interior defense and rebounding in upcoming matchups against New Zealand men’s national basketball team and Australia men’s national basketball team, two teams known for their size and physical style.

     

    Millora-Brown joined the national pool late in the previous cycle after a last-minute arrangement between the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas and his camp, leaving him little time to fully absorb the system. With more preparation now under his belt, he believes the adjustment period is behind him.

     

    “I’ve gotten a lot more comfortable with the system, with the way we want to play, that just last window obviously still new, still trying to figure it all out but this window I feel a lot more confident in how I would fit in, how I’m going to play,” said Millora-Brown in an interview posted by SBP on its Facebook page.

     

    His first taste of international play came in two wins against the Guam men’s national basketball team, but the challenge level rises significantly this time with two Oceania powerhouses on the schedule.

     

    For Millora-Brown, the assignment is straightforward: bring size, strength, and physicality to match the opposition’s frontlines.

     

    “The size will be different. That’s the one thing I bring. You can’t train size. So, just being big and strong and physical with those guys because Australia and New Zealand are two crazy big teams,” said QMB.

    Momentum in the Premier Volleyball League All-Filipino Conference has proven fragile—and on Tuesday night, Cignal reminded everyone just how quickly the standings can shift.

    Reasserting its composure after a recent stumble, the Cignal Super Spikers delivered one of their most disciplined performances of the conference, dismantling the PLDT High Speed Hitters, 25-21, 25-19, 25-23, at the Filoil EcoOil Centre.

     

    But beyond the sweep, the result carried deeper implications: the race to the semifinals is now fully open.

     

    With PLDT absorbing its first defeat after building early momentum, no team remains in position for a clean preliminary-round run. The path to an outright Final Four berth—once seemingly within reach for select contenders—has turned into a week-to-week grind where consistency outweighs streaks.

     

    Cignal, meanwhile, continues to show a curious pattern: regardless of form or circumstance, it repeatedly finds ways to neutralize PLDT.

     

    This latest victory echoed their upset sweep of the High Speed Hitters in last season’s Reinforced Conference, reinforcing a matchup dynamic that has quietly tilted in Cignal’s favor.

     

    At the center of the Super Spikers’ control was setter Gel Cayuna, who blended orchestration and opportunistic scoring to dictate the match’s rhythm. Cayuna finished with 18 excellent sets and nine points, repeatedly catching PLDT off guard with her signature 1-2 plays while maintaining balance across Cignal’s attacking options.

     

    She credited their composure and discipline for the dominant showing.“Sinunod lang namin ang game plan at strategy ni coach,” said Cayuna, referring to coach Shaq Delos Santos after earning Best Player of the Game honors. “Sa apat na games, natutunan na naming i-control ang sarili namin, lalo na sa mga dikitang laban (We simply followed coach Shaq’s game plan and strategy. In our past four games, we’ve learned how to control ourselves better, especially in tight matches).”

    Used to playing a dual role as playmaker and scorer, Cayuna said her aggressiveness comes naturally—but it’s made possible by the trust within the team.

     

    “Sanay na akong mag-contribute kung saan kailangan,” she added. “Pero nagagawa ko iyon dahil sa suporta ng mga teammates ko (I’m used to contributing wherever I’m needed. But I’m able to do that because of my teammates’ support).”

     

    While Cayuna controlled tempo, Cignal’s offensive depth steadily wore PLDT down. Erika Santos led the scoring charge with 17 points, supported by Vanie Gandler with 14. Contributions from Ishie Lalongisip, Roselyn Aquino, and Jackie Acuña ensured Cignal maintained pressure across rotations.

     

    Equally crucial was the defensive stability anchored by Dawn Catindig, whose floor coverage disrupted PLDT’s rhythm and fueled transition scoring.

     

    Cignal outgunned PLDT in total attacks, 48-39, and exploited reception lapses to produce six service aces—small advantages that compounded over the course of the match.

     

    PLDT still showed flashes of resistance. Savi Davison paced the High Speed Hitters with 14 points, while Kim Dy added 11. Alleiah Malaluan and Mika Reyes chipped in eight and seven markers, respectively.

     

    Their late push in the third set nearly extended the match after trimming a six-point deficit to one, but Cignal responded with composed shot-making—highlighted by Santos’ clutch off-the-block hits before Cayuna sealed the contest with a perfectly timed setter dump.

     

    PLDT challenged the final play for a net violation, but the call stood, confirming another straight-sets victory for Cignal.

    The breakthrough moment came midway through the first half when Inday Tolentin found space in the 14th minute and converted what would stand as the match’s only goal. From there, the Filipina5 relied on disciplined defending and controlled possession to preserve the slim advantage until the final whistle.

     

    The result marked a significant step forward for the Philippine squad, which had previously struggled to secure a win during the tournament’s first staging at PhilSports Arena in Pasig in 2024. In that campaign, the team managed just one draw—also against Myanmar—alongside four losses.

For Alexandra Eala, that turning point arrived during her remarkable run in Miami in 2025, when a week of fearless tennis transformed her from a promising young talent into a legitimate contender on the global stage.

     

    Entering the tournament with limited expectations, Eala instead delivered one of the most stunning performances of the season. She surged into her first-ever WTA 1000 semifinal, defeating top-10 opponents Madison Keys and Iga Świątek along the way. 

     

    The breakthrough run eventually ended in a hard-fought three-set loss to Jessica Pegula, but by then, the impact of her performance had already reshaped her career trajectory.

     

    As her return to Miami approaches, Eala recently reflected on that stretch during an appearance on The Sit-down, recorded around the time of the Australian Open earlier this season. The Filipina described the run as the defining highlight of her career so far—one that brought clarity to her place on tour.

     

    “Well, I think that that has to be the highlight of my career so far. Like you said, that’s what put me on the map, but I, you know, it just everything clicked after that,” Eala said.

     

    “I look back at that moment and I just think, wow, like it was, it was insane. And it’s crazy to believe that that actually happened.”

    The results reflected just how dramatic that breakthrough was. In the span of a week, Eala jumped from World No. 140 to No. 75, instantly unlocking opportunities to compete in higher-level tournaments. From there, her schedule expanded to include more WTA 1000 events, Grand Slam main draws, and tougher competition that accelerated her development.

     

    Nearly a year removed from that performance, Eala has gradually turned momentum into experience. A WTA 125 title, a Grand Slam main draw victory, and a Southeast Asian Games gold medal have strengthened her resume, while deeper exposure to elite fields has helped refine her consistency and decision-making under pressure. 

     

    Even the challenges that followed—adjusting to higher expectations and stronger opponents—became part of her learning curve.

     

    “I think everything at that point after Miami was a new experience with that ranking, being in the top 100 for the very first time. But my eyes were just wide open. I was just so eager to compete and to learn and to be at this level,” Eala said.

     

    “And in the end, you know, being on tour and the WTA tour is my dream. It’s, you know, to be a professional tennis player and I’m living out my dream. So although it came with its challenges and I had some tough times last year as well, I think I look back at 2025 with so much positivity,” she added.

     

    That perspective is now translating into fresh results. Following the early-season swing, Eala delivered another strong showing at the Dubai Tennis Championships, reaching the quarterfinals and climbing to a career-high World No. 31. 

     

    With renewed confidence and a deeper understanding of life on tour, she now shifts her focus to the upcoming Sunshine Double, beginning at the BNP Paribas Open before returning once again to Miami—the place where her breakthrough began and where her next chapter continues to unfold.
