    The NLEX Road Warriors have made a statement ahead of the PBA Season 50 Governors’ Cup, adding veteran guard Evan Nelle to strengthen a backcourt that will now be steered under new head coach Jimmy Alapag.


    The Road Warriors officially welcomed the former Phoenix Fuel Masters playmaker on Tuesday, completing a roster move that saw forward Sidney Onwubere leave the franchise after spending nearly a year with the team.

     

    “Welcome to NLEX, Evan Nelle! A floor general who thrives under pressure, sees every play before it unfolds, and keeps the offense rolling, you’re built for the road ahead.     Nelle arrives in NLEX after a brief stint with the Fuel Masters, where he emerged as one of the team’s primary facilitators during the Commissioner’s Cup. 

     

    He averaged 8.08 points, 1.5 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game, helping Phoenix secure a quarterfinal berth before the Fuel Masters bowed to eventual champion Barangay Ginebra.

     

    His arrival gives Alapag another experienced ballhandler capable of orchestrating the offense while providing stability in the backcourt.

    Nelle is expected to join a guard rotation that already features Robert Bolick, Schonny Winston, Kevin Alas, and LJay Gonzales, giving the Road Warriors added depth entering the new conference.

     

    The move also reunites Nelle with Bolick, his former teammate at San Beda University. The pair last shared the floor during NCAA Season 94, where they formed one of the league’s most dependable backcourt tandems before embarking on their respective professional careers.

     

    Nelle began his PBA career with NorthPort Batang Pier after being selected in the PBA Season 49 Rookie Draft. He was later traded to the Phoenix Fuel Masters, where he established himself as a reliable playmaker before earning another move to the Road Warriors, marking the third stop of his young professional career. 

     

    While NLEX focused on reinforcing its lineup, the club also confirmed the departure of Onwubere, who had been with the Road Warriors since November 2025. The roster adjustment signals the team’s intent to reshape its rotation as it looks to improve on its previous conference finish.

     

    Both NLEX and Phoenix enter the Governors’ Cup seeking redemption after their respective quarterfinal exits in the Commissioner’s Cup. The Road Warriors begin their campaign against the Macau Black Knights on Friday, July 10, while the Fuel Masters open their schedule a day later against Magnolia.

    For the first time in nearly a decade, Barangay Ginebra is preparing to begin a PBA Governors’ Cup campaign without Justin Brownlee leading the way.


    The Gin Kings have officially started looking for a temporary replacement for their longtime resident import after Brownlee was sidelined by multiple injuries sustained during Ginebra’s Commissioner’s Cup title run and Gilas Pilipinas’ recent stint in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers.

     

    The search is already underway.

     

    Head coach Tim Cone revealed in an exclusive interview before departing for the United States on Wednesday that he will spend part of his trip to the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas scouting for an import who can fill Brownlee’s spot while the naturalized Filipino works his way back to full health.

     

    “To scout for an import,” he said.

     

    The timing leaves Ginebra with little room to spare.

     

    The defending Commissioner’s Cup champions open their PBA Season 50 Governors’ Cup campaign against Phoenix on July 19, giving Cone just over a week to identify and secure a reinforcement capable of helping the team stay competitive until Brownlee returns.

     

    Finding an import has rarely been a concern for Ginebra over the past nine years.

     

    Since first arriving in the Philippines during the 2016 Governors’ Cup, Brownlee has become one of the most accomplished and beloved imports in PBA history.

While replacing Brownlee’s production, leadership, and championship pedigree is an enormous challenge, Ginebra hopes its next reinforcement can keep the team afloat until its longtime cornerstone is healthy enough to return.

    Rain or Shine enters the PBA Season 50 Governors’ Cup with momentum on its side after ending its preseason preparations on a high note.


    The Elasto Painters put together an explosive offensive performance on Tuesday, overwhelming the undermanned Macau Giant Pandas, 139-98, in their final tune-up game at Acropolis Gym in Quezon City.


    The victory allowed Rain or Shine to split its two preseason outings after falling to Converge in its first exhibition game last week, giving head coach Yeng Guiao a more encouraging glimpse of where his squad stands just days before the conference opens.


    One of the bright spots was Caelan Tiongson, who knocked down a pair of three-pointers during a decisive run that helped Rain or Shine quickly create separation and maintain control for the rest of the contest.


    While the scoreline was convincing, Guiao believes the preseason results are less important than helping the team regain its rhythm after a lengthy break and integrating returning import Aaron Fuller back into the system.

    While his name has surfaced in trade discussions over the past few months, the Fil-Am guard has made it clear that his attention remains on the only thing he can influence: preparing the Bossing for a fresh campaign.

     

    “I’m pretty locked in. There’s a lot of rumors and a lot of things going around, and I’m just trying to stay focused on what I can control, which is going on the court and being there for my teammates,” Barefield said.

     

    The trade chatter has persisted throughout the offseason, with Barfield’s agent previously revealing that several PBA teams have expressed interest in acquiring the high-scoring guard.

    Already preparing to navigate the early part of the PBA Season 50 Governors’ Cup without resident import Justin Brownlee, the Gin Kings will also be missing Scottie Thompson after the star guard was ordered to undergo an extended recovery from a hamstring injury sustained during the Commissioner’s Cup Finals.

     

    The setback leaves Ginebra without two of the biggest reasons behind its recent championship run, forcing the defending champions to rely on the depth of their local roster while both veterans work their way back to full health.

     

    According to head coach Tim Cone, Thompson’s rehabilitation timeline has already been determined by the team’s medical staff.

     

    “Doctor (George) Canlas has ordered for him to have a 6-8 weeks of rest,” said Ginebra coach Tim Cone.

     

    “So we’ll probably miss him for the first few weeks of the conference.”

     

    The injury had already affected Thompson beyond the PBA season.

     

    The reigning Commissioner’s Cup Finals MVP was originally included in Gilas Pilipinas’ roster for the third window of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers before eventually withdrawing because of the lingering hamstring issue. His absence opened the door for Converge rookie Juan Gomez de Liano to earn a spot on the national team.

     

    Cone revealed that Thompson’s condition steadily worsened as the championship series against TNT Tropang 5G progressed.

     

    “Scottie has a really, really bad hamstring that got worse as the series went on,” recalled Cone. “And after Game 7, it was really quite bad.”

    Thompson’s absence comes at the same time Brownlee is also recovering from multiple injuries suffered during the Finals and his stint with Gilas Pilipinas.

    Now, Ahanmisi enters a completely different environment. Instead of serving as the primary offensive option, he joins a veteran-laden San Miguel squad loaded with championship experience and proven stars. His perimeter shooting should complement reigning league MVP June Mar Fajardo’s dominant inside presence while creating more space for explosive guards CJ Perez and Jericho Cruz to attack. Veteran sniper Marcio Lassiter and longtime floor general Chris Ross further strengthen a rotation that is among the deepest in the league, with Don Trollano and Hernandez also providing additional versatility.

    The road to the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 is entering its most demanding stage for Gilas Pilipinas.

     

    With the completion of the third window of the Asian Qualifiers, the six-team field for Group E is now officially set. The Philippines will carry its campaign into the second round alongside Australia and New Zealand from Group A, while West Asian powers Iran, Jordan, and Syria advance from Group C.

     

    Australia topped Group A to secure the No. 1 seed, followed by New Zealand and Gilas Pilipinas.     After enduring a difficult stretch in the FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers, Gilas Pilipinas could be set for a much-needed lift when the next window arrives—with the possibility of playing in front of its home supporters at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.


    The potential return to Philippine soil comes at a critical point for the national team, which enters Group E with a 2-4 record and needs every advantage possible as the race for a place in the FIBA World Cup 2027 becomes tighter.

     

    If the reported venue arrangement pushes through, the SM Mall of Asia Arena is expected to host all six Group E games during Window 4, giving Gilas and the rest of the teams a familiar environment for the important stretch of qualifiers.

     

    The move follows the relocation of Windows 2, 3, and 4 of Group C to Prince Hamza Hall in Amman, Jordan on June 29, July 2, and July 5 due to the conflict in the Middle East.

     

    The upcoming window is scheduled to begin on August 27, with Syria facing Australia, Iran meeting New Zealand, and the Philippines taking on Jordan.

    For June Mar Fajardo, the result on the scoreboard will fade with time. The privilege of wearing “Pilipinas” across his chest never will.

     

    The longtime Gilas Pilipinas cornerstone walked away from Monday night’s 92-49 defeat to Australia with more than a bounce-back performance. It was another reminder that, at this stage of his decorated career, every national team appearance is a chance he refuses to take for granted.

     

    After being held scoreless in the Philippines’ heartbreaking double-overtime loss to New Zealand just days earlier, Fajardo answered with eight points, six rebounds, three assists, and a block against the Boomers. He continued to battle inside despite Australia’s size, physicality, and relentless pressure, giving Gilas one of its few steady presences throughout the contest.

     

    Still, the nine-time PBA Most Valuable Player said the statistics mattered far less than the opportunity itself.

    Now 36 years old, Fajardo understands that the remaining chapters of his international career are becoming fewer. Rather than dwell on that reality, it has strengthened his appreciation every time his name appears on the national team roster.

    His determination, however, was not enough to lift Gilas past one of Asia’s basketball powerhouses.

     

    Australia controlled the game from the opening tip and never allowed the Filipinos to find any rhythm. Gilas committed 19 turnovers that turned into 30 Boomers points, surrendered 20 fast-break points, and struggled to match Australia’s dominance on the boards as the hosts cruised to victory.

     

    Despite consecutive losses to New Zealand and Australia in the third window, the Philippines still advanced to the second round of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers with a 2-4 record.

     

    With the next phase beginning in late August, Fajardo and Gilas will once again answer the call when they face Jordan on August 28, another opportunity for the veteran big man to do what he says he will never grow tired of—representing the country.
