The coach added that Patton had indicated fatigue rather than injury, making his sudden unavailability on game day particularly unexpected.

     

    “Last night I was able to talk to the driver and then he asked him, ano are you ready to play? He was in good spirits last night. That’s why I’m excited for him to come and play. But one hour before the game I heard he cannot play. That’s very unprofessional of him,” Austria said.

     

    “There’s no injuries eh. And I asked him, are you going to practice? He said I just want to rest dahil he’s tired. I said, okay, see you tomorrow. It’s very important practice for us to prepare because the situation right now is not cooperating with our standing. So I’m expecting na he will show up today. But wala eh,” he added.

     

    The veteran coach also stressed that the organization expects accountability moving forward, hinting at possible consequences following Patton’s sudden exit from team activities.

     

    “I don’t know anong magiging consequences niyan. Dahil it’s unprofessional eh, ganyan eh. And then, we are relying on his presence here because we know that we can win because he proved it in his first two games. He helped a lot. Kami naman, tao lang tayo. Pwede naman kami magpatawad. Pero he has to face the consequences na dapat mangyari sa kanya,” Austria concluded.

     

    San Miguel now turns its attention to stabilizing its import situation ahead of a crucial stretch in the elimination round.     New York Knicks guard Mikal Bridges continues to build one of the most remarkable durability streaks in modern basketball, extending his consecutive games played run to 638 contests at the conclusion of the 2026 National Basketball Association regular season.

     

    Bridges suited up in the Knicks’ season finale against the Charlotte Hornets on Monday, April 13 (Philippine Standard Time), logging just 23 seconds on the floor at Madison Square Garden. While New York fell 96–110 in front of their home crowd, the brief appearance was enough to preserve one of the league’s most impressive active streaks.

     

    At 29 years old, Bridges has now climbed to eighth place on the NBA’s all-time list for consecutive games played, surpassing notable names such as John Stockton, B. J. Armstrong, and Andre Miller over the course of the season. He now sits just under 50 games behind former Knicks standout Harry Gallatin, while the all-time record remains firmly held by A. C. Green at an astonishing 1,192 consecutive games—a streak that spanned nearly 15 seasons.

    What makes Bridges’ feat even more extraordinary is the era in which it is being achieved. In today’s NBA, where load management has become a widely accepted practice to preserve player health over the long grind of the season, long ironman streaks have become increasingly rare. In fact, none of the seven players ahead of Bridges on the all-time list began their streaks after the 1980s, further highlighting the uniqueness of his accomplishment in the modern game.

     

    Knicks head coach Mike Brown acknowledged both the significance of the streak and the delicate balance required to maintain it in today’s environment.

    “The streak that he has going is amazing and I definitely don’t want to be the one to screw that up. It’s crazy because load management is a real term. And that’s something that’s thought of by everybody, not just the medical performance group but by coaches, by individual players, by agents, by family members, and people get pushed to take time off for whatever reasons. And so for a guy like that to be at the number he’s at in consecutive games played speaks volumes,” Brown said.

     

    “I’m sure he’s probably cool with playing a few seconds to keep the streak alive but at the end of the day, that’s definitely led by me. It’s a streak that he has going on, and I want it to continue, but in the same breath, I also don’t want him to get hurt or anything like that that, so we’re gonna try to be as smart about it as best we can,” he added.

     

    Bridges’ commitment to availability has been a defining trait throughout his basketball journey. Remarkably, he has not missed a single game dating back to his high school career, underscoring a level of consistency and physical resilience that is virtually unheard of in today’s game. His ironman résumé also includes an 83-game season during the 2022–23 campaign, made possible by a midseason trade that saw him suit up for more than one team.

     

    “For the people that’s paying attention, I just want to try and play everyday. It’s who I am. It’s who I have always been. I don’t really look at the all-time list but I guess it would be cool one day. Hopefully, I have kids one day and maybe brag about that,” Bridges said after moving up the list.

     

    Originally selected 10th overall by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2018 NBA Draft, Bridges was dealt on draft night to the Phoenix Suns in exchange for Zhaire Smith and a future first-round pick. Since entering the league, he has also had a stint with the Brooklyn Nets before landing with the Knicks, steadily establishing himself as one of the league’s premier two-way players.

    Still reeling from a tough loss, the Hotshots found clarity and rhythm at the perfect time, riding an inspired performance from import Clint Chapman to dismantle San Miguel, 120-101, in the PBA Season 50 Commissioner’s Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.


    What could have been a tricky matchup turned into an opportunity seized. With San Miguel missing its import Justin Patton, Magnolia leaned into Chapman and delivered his most complete game yet.

     

    The 6-foot-10 reinforcement erupted for 34 points, alongside six rebounds and two assists, steering Magnolia to a much-needed lift in the standings at 3-4. 

     

    While Chapman anchored the charge, Magnolia’s cohesion told the bigger story. The Hotshots moved the ball with purpose, piling up 36 assists while knocking down 10 of 19 attempts from beyond the arc. 

     

    Their defensive pressure also proved decisive, turning 13 San Miguel turnovers into 24 points.

    San Miguel, playing all-Filipino without Patton—who had missed practices following their loss to Rain or Shine, leaned on Cjay Perez to carry the scoring load. 

     

    He responded with 23 points, while Mo Tautuaa and Jericho Cruz chipped in 13 apiece. But the Beermen struggled to match Magnolia’s balance and pace.

    Even Magnolia head coach LA Tenorio admitted the unexpected nature of San Miguel’s lineup shift caught them off guard, but not unprepared.

     

    “I told them that this team (San Miguel) is dangerous without an import. They are the all-Filipino champions for a reason. I challenged them kasi mas nakakatakot kalaban San Miguel kapag all-Fiipino,” Tenorio said.

     

    That mindset translated into execution. Supporting Chapman, the trio of Jerrick Ahanmisi, Zavier Lucero, and Ian Sangalang combined for 36 points, ensuring the Hotshots never lost control.

     

    Tenorio also emphasized growth through adversity, pointing to how the team responded after their previous defeat.

     

    “I keep on challenging them every practice, and sometimes the things I say to them are tough to hear, but it’s for us to grow as a team. Tonight, I have to give credit to my players after a tough loss last Friday, and that’s what we needed,” Tenorio added.

     

    With momentum back on their side, Magnolia now looks to string together wins as it prepares to face the struggling Converge FiberXers on April 19 at Ynares Center in Antipolo.

     

    San Miguel, meanwhile, heads into its next assignment searching for answers as it braces for a tough test against the NLEX Road Warriors, hoping to halt its early skid.
