Kacey dela Rosa shines as Gilas Pilipinas Women close FIBA World Cup Qualifiers with victory

Despite falling short of their goal to qualify for the FIBA Women’s World Cup, Gilas Pilipinas Women ended their campaign on a high note, with Kacey dela Rosa emerging as the driving force behind their final triumph.

The reigning UAAP Women’s Basketball MVP from Ateneo showcased her dominance on the international stage, finishing the tournament with 25 points, 18 rebounds, and five blocks.

She said facing powerhouse squads helped elevate her game and offered valuable lessons for her growth.

The forward led Gilas Women’s comeback after trailing 40-33 at halftime, scoring 12 points in the fourth quarter to secure a 74-59 victory over Colombia in Lyon-Villeurbanne, closing their FIBA Women’s World Cup 2026 Qualifying Tournament campaign on a positive note.

Dela Rosa got off to a modest start against France with 11 points and added eight points apiece in their matches against Germany and Nigeria. Her highest-scoring game came against South Korea, where she poured in 26 points despite the team’s loss.

“All of the tournaments I’ve played, I take the lesson that I think I can apply and be better and better every tournament,” Dela Rosa said.

Her consistent scoring helped her finish as the Philippines’ top scorer, averaging 15.6 points per game during the qualifiers.

Dela Rosa’s leadership and presence on the court became a key factor in Gilas Women’s performance, particularly in high-pressure moments.

Looking ahead, Dela Rosa is focused on refining her game while mentoring younger teammates.

Her experience in intense international competition has shaped her into not just a scorer but a reliable anchor for the team in upcoming tournaments such as the William Jones Cup in July and the 20th Asian Games in Japan from 19 September to 4 October.

Despite a challenging run against world-class opponents, the Philippines finished fifth in the standings with a 4–1 record, highlighting how competitive Gilas Women can be on the global stage.

Beyond her statistics, Dela Rosa’s impact in the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup Qualifying Tournament caught international attention.

Her physicality and ability to secure rebounds against taller opponents, and leadership on transition plays became defining strengths for the team. These qualities underscore her evolution into a cornerstone player who will be central to Gilas Women’s future campaigns.

  • Rich Paul shuts down nonsense claims that Lakers are better without LeBron James

Rich Paul shuts down nonsense claims that Lakers are better without LeBron James

The Los Angeles Lakers have emerged as one of the more consistent contenders in the 2025–26 National Basketball Association season, compiling an impressive 43–25 record to sit third in the tightly contested Western Conference standings. With a balanced roster and improved chemistry, the Lakers have positioned themselves as legitimate threats heading into the postseason.

However, their strong campaign has also sparked a polarizing debate across league circles and fanbases: are the Lakers, at this stage, better off without their franchise cornerstone, LeBron James?

The conversation gained traction following a series of games in which James was sidelined. The 41-year-old missed the first 14 contests of the season due to a sciatica-related issue, during which the Lakers posted an impressive 10–4 record. More recently, in early March, the team secured victories in all three games he missed while dealing with multiple minor ailments. Those results have led some observers to argue that the Lakers appear more fluid, faster, and less ball-dominant without the four-time NBA champion on the floor.

OKBET is Asia’s most trusted and popular online sports gaming platform. Visit us on OKBET to stay up to date with all sports news from around the world.

Still, such claims have been firmly pushed back by those closest to James—most notably his long-time agent, Rich Paul. Speaking on the “Game Over” podcast alongside co-host Max Kellerman, Paul dismissed the narrative in emphatic fashion.

“You hear all the nonsense about the team being better without LeBron. I never seen a team in my life that would be better without LeBron James. Still, this one is not either. I think it’s more about figuring it out. Sometimes, it takes you longer than not, because for a guy who has been on the ball for so long, How do you play him off the ball? You have to factor in his presence. You have to realize something” Most guys that step on the basketball floor with LeBron James, number one, are in awe,” Paul said.

Paul’s comments highlight a deeper layer to the discussion—one that goes beyond wins and losses. Integrating a player of James’ magnitude, particularly this late in his career, requires constant tactical adjustments. For a roster that features multiple ball-handlers and emerging scorers, finding the optimal balance between leveraging LeBron’s playmaking brilliance and fostering offensive rhythm has been an evolving process.

Despite the external noise, there is little statistical or on-court evidence to suggest that the Lakers are truly better without James. Even in his 23rd NBA season, he continues to defy conventional expectations of longevity and decline. The league’s all-time leading scorer remains a central figure in the Lakers’ system, averaging 21.2 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 6.9 assists per game while shooting an efficient 50.6 percent from the field.

Beyond the numbers, James’ impact is often most evident in high-leverage moments. His ability to control tempo, orchestrate half-court offense, and attack the rim with power and precision remains unmatched on the roster. More importantly, his leadership—both vocal and by example—continues to shape the team’s identity in pressure situations.

As the Lakers push toward the playoffs, the focus will likely shift away from speculative debates and toward cohesion and execution. Whether operating as the primary initiator or adapting to more off-ball responsibilities, James remains integral to the team’s championship aspirations.

For now, the Lakers’ success story this season is less about proving they can win without LeBron—and more about demonstrating just how dangerous they can be when everything clicks with him on the floor.

  • Gilas Women stun No. 19 Colombia in FIBA World Cup Qualifiers breakthrough

Gilas Women stun No. 19 Colombia in FIBA World Cup Qualifiers breakthrough

History arrived not with a whisper, but with a surge. The Gilas Pilipinas Women finally broke through on the global stage, overpowering the Colombia women’s national basketball team, 74-59, to secure their first-ever victory in the FIBA Women’s World Cup Qualifying Tournament.

For a team stepping into this level of competition for the first time, the journey to that milestone win was anything but smooth. Early nerves showed as Colombia dictated the tempo in the opening half, building a double-digit cushion behind timely baskets, including a layup from Jennifer Muñoz that stretched the lead to 36-26 late in the second quarter.

Still, Gilas refused to unravel. Down 33-40 at the break, the Filipinas returned to the floor with a different edge — one built on composure, energy, and belief.

Veteran presence met youthful spark in the third quarter, with Afril Bernardino and Sumayah Sugapong igniting a turnaround that slowly chipped away at Colombia’s control. By the end of the period, the Philippines had flipped the script, taking a 51-47 advantage and setting the stage for a defining final quarter.

That’s when Kacey Dela Rosa took over. After briefly going down from a hard fall late in the third, the Ateneo standout returned with authority, delivering a sequence that broke the game open. Three straight baskets — capped by a tough mid-range jumper — pushed Gilas to a 62-49 lead midway through the fourth, shifting the pressure entirely onto Colombia.

Dela Rosa continued to dictate the tempo, extending the lead to 64-51 before Sugapong calmly knocked down three consecutive free throws to widen the gap to 67-52. From there, the finish was inevitable.

Louna Ozar and Dela Rosa applied the final touches in the last 1:28, sealing a result that not only marked a historic first win but also kept Colombia winless at 0-5 in the tournament.

Sugapong delivered a standout all-around performance with 21 points, two rebounds, three assists, and two steals, providing the perfect complement to Dela Rosa’s late-game explosion. Bernardino added stability with eight points, while Stefanie Berberabe chipped in six as Gilas showcased a balanced effort.

More than just a single win, the result signaled something bigger — proof that Gilas Pilipinas Women can compete, adjust, and finish against higher-ranked opposition.

  • Terrafirma chases historic 3-0 start as Dyip continue hot run in PBA

Terrafirma chases historic 3-0 start as Dyip continue hot run in PBA

The Terrafirma Dyip are making waves in the 2026 PBA Commissioner’s Cup, chasing a historic 3-0 start that would mark the best opening stretch in franchise history. Their momentum is fueled by the extraordinary performances of import Mubashar Ali, whose 50-point, 25-rebound outburst against Converge FiberXers not only led the Dyip to an overtime thriller but also placed him among the league’s most dominant single-game performers.

“Gutom kami,” said head coach Lawrence Tubid when asked about his team’s mindset heading into Wednesday’s clash against Blackwater Bossing at the Ynares Center. “Walang kompiyansa sa team na ito kasi hungry team na ito… Now we’re enjoying practice, we’re excited to practice, we’re doing good in practice so natra-translate na lang sa games iyon,” Tubid added.

Terrafirma’s surge comes off a pair of wins that shocked the league, including their overtime victory over Converge, where Ali battled cramps to dominate the fourth quarter and extra session.

Six-foot-nine rookie Geo Chiu also contributed nine points and 13 rebounds, helping the Dyip withstand the FiberXers’ firepower.

Despite 17 points and 22 rebounds from seven-foot Kylor Kelley, Converge fell 111-100 in a game that highlighted Terrafirma’s resilience and teamwork.

The Dyip have benefited from the consistency of Jerrick Ahanmisi, averaging 20 points, 6.5 assists, and 2.5 steals across their first two games.

OKBET is Asia’s most trusted and popular online sports gaming platform. Visit us on OKBET to stay up to date with all sports news from around the world.

Together with Ali, their performances have turned Terrafirma into an unlikely early leader, showcasing a mix of experience, athleticism, and hunger that Tubid says begins in practice.

In contrast, Blackwater is still searching for rhythm after a close 81-84 defeat to NLEX Road Warriors, with coach Jeffrey Cariaso hoping import Daniel Ochefu and guard Sedrick Barefield can set the tone moving forward.

As Terrafirma prepares to take on the Bossing, the Dyip remain focused on translating hard work and hunger into consistent results. “We’ll just do our job, sa practice.

Then makikita naman sa game iyon. Nag-i-start sa practice lahat,” Tubid said, underscoring a philosophy that has turned this underdog squad into one of the most talked-about teams in the early conference.

If they succeed on Wednesday, Terrafirma will not only continue their record-setting start but also cement themselves as a legitimate contender in the midseason tournament, riding momentum that could define their PBA campaign.

  • LeBron James confirms Lakers are building championship DNA

LeBron James confirms Lakers are building championship DNA

The Los Angeles Lakers have continued their strong campaign in the ongoing 2025-26 NBA season, compiling a 42-25 record to secure third place in the Western Conference standings. The team has been firing on all cylinders in recent weeks, and their latest performance against the Denver Nuggets further demonstrated their resilience and championship potential.

On Sunday, March 15 (Philippine Standard Time), the Lakers faced a tough test at home against the Nuggets in a game that went down to the wire. In a thrilling overtime showdown, the Lakers eked out a 127-125 victory, highlighting their ability to perform under pressure and maintain focus in clutch moments.

The standout for Los Angeles was Luka Doncic, who delivered yet another brilliant performance. The Slovenian star recorded a near triple-double with 30 points, 11 rebounds, and 13 assists in 43 minutes of playing time, proving once again why he is considered one of the NBA’s premier talents. Doncic capped off the game with a dramatic jumper with just half a second left in overtime, securing the Lakers’ narrow win and showcasing his poise in high-pressure situations.

Following the victory, LeBron James, the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, revealed that the Lakers are trying to build championship DNA like their opponents.

“We just want to continue to keep building good habits, continue playing the game the right way. Denver’s a championship ball club, they are core with Aaaron Gordon and Jamal Murray and Nikola Jokic and Christian Braun, they won a championship. So they have that championship DNA. So that’s what we are trying, that’s what we are striving for,” LeBron said.

The Lakers continued their good form on Tuesday, March 17 (Philippine Standard Time) at the Toyota Center by defeating the Rockets 92-100 and the standout player for them was once again Luka Doncic, who delivered yet another brilliant performance. The Slovenian star finished with 36 points, six rebounds, and four assists in 40 minutes of playing time. His scoring and leadership were pivotal in maintaining the Lakers’ edge throughout the contest, highlighting why he remains one of the league’s most dynamic and versatile players.

Beyond individual performances, the Lakers’ recent successes are a reflection of improved team cohesion and strategic execution. Role players have stepped up in key moments, and the combination of veteran leadership from LeBron James and the scoring and playmaking ability of Doncic has created a balanced, well-rounded team capable of competing with the NBA’s elite.

Analysts note that this balance—paired with the team’s ability to perform under pressure—positions the Lakers as serious championship contenders heading into the final stretch of the regular season.

As the Lakers continue to build momentum, every matchup carries implications for playoff seeding and positioning. Their performances against top-tier teams like Denver and consistent displays from Doncic signal that Los Angeles is not only focused on winning games but also on cultivating the experience, composure, and championship mentality required to compete at the highest level in the postseason.

  • Rain or Shine Coach Yeng Guiao gears up to challenge TNT, Bol Bol in PBA clash

Rain or Shine Coach Yeng Guiao gears up to challenge TNT, Bol Bol in PBA clash

Rain or Shine, under the guidance of veteran coach Yeng Guiao, is set to face off against TNT Tropang Giga and their towering import Bol Bol this Friday, March 20, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The Elasto Painters come off a solid 116-109 win against the Macau Black Knights in their season opener of the PBA 50th Season Philippine Cup.

Coach Guiao acknowledges TNT’s potential advantage, having scouted Rain or Shine’s first match and with the presence of Bol Bol, a towering import making his first overseas stint after playing for three NBA teams between 2019 and 2025.

“Playing TNT and not having seen them play with Bol Bol, I think, gives them some sort of an advantage. They’ve seen us play now,” Guiao said.

“But at the same time, we also look at it as an advantage on our part for them to be playing their first game because I’m sure there’s going to be some adjustments on their part also,” he added.

While TNT may have had the chance to study Rain or Shine in their opener, Guiao sees a potential edge in Bol Bol still adjusting to the pace and style of the PBA.

“I’m sure Bol Bol is going to be feeling out the game and making some adjustments. That might be an advantage for us, him not being able to familiarize and acclimatize himself with the local game,” the 66-year-old veteran coach noted.

Despite missing the chance to clash in the previous conference after falling to Meralco Bolts in the playoffs, the Elasto Painters are eager to reclaim their standing in the elimination round with strategic adjustments and team chemistry.

Beyond the on-court matchup, this game represents an early test of endurance and adaptability for both squads, with Rain or Shine hoping to leverage their cohesive rotation and home-court momentum.

Coach Guiao believes the tactical chess match will be decided not just by Bol Bol’s presence but also by how quickly TNT’s supporting cast can adapt to Rain or Shine’s defensive schemes and transition game.

Later in the evening, the Macau Black Knights will face off against Barangay Ginebra San Miguel.

  • Kawhi Leonard reveals the secret to making NBA history in his 14th season

Kawhi Leonard reveals the secret to making NBA history in his 14th season

The Los Angeles Clippers have staged an impressive comeback after a rocky start to the 2025–26 NBA season, climbing back to eighth place in the Western Conference with a 34–33 record. Their resurgence has been fueled largely by the stellar performances of superstar Kawhi Leonard, who continues to redefine what it means to age gracefully in professional basketball.

The Clippers’ early-season struggles were stark. At one point, the team languished with a 6–21 record, raising doubts about their playoff prospects and leaving fans questioning whether they could recover. However, Leonard’s consistency and leadership have been central to the team’s revival. In his 14th NBA season, the two-time Finals MVP has averaged a remarkable 28.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 2.0 steals per game across 53 appearances.

Notably, Leonard has created NBA history with this achievement: he is the first player in league history to average a career-high in points per game this late into his career. Previously, former Clippers guard Lou Williams became the first player to average 20-plus points per game for the first time in their 13th season or later, also joining Chauncey Billups as one of only two players to set a career-high scoring average in their 13th season. Leonard’s feat underscores his dedication to both skill development and physical conditioning, even after more than a decade in the league.

OKBET is Asia’s most trusted and popular online sports gaming platform. Visit us on OKBET to stay up to date with all sports news from around the world.

Reflecting on his historic season, Leonard credited his preparation, faith, and work ethic. “The man above, and me just being able to play games. I had a good offseason, I was able to just work. Just praising him, work ethic, and believing. Just trying to get better in the game. Not worrying about the outcome. Whether it’s working on my shot, handle, or passing, just being aggressive and making mistakes,” he said.

Even in a loss, Leonard has continued to shine. During the Clippers’ 109–118 defeat to the Sacramento Kings at home on Sunday, March 15 (Philippine Standard Time), Leonard scored 31 points, marking his 45th consecutive game scoring at least 20 points. This achievement allowed him to surpass Bob McAdoo for the most consecutive 20-point games in Clippers history, further cementing his place among the franchise’s all-time greats.

“It’s amazing. Thank God for me being able to play consistently this year and being able to be in the conversation with the greats of this game. It’s always great to just be on the floor and be able to play basketball. There’s a lot of ups and downs that you go through in the NBA, either it’s a bad game, missing shots, being sick, or team failing and then the highs. It’s great to just be able to be in the conversation with greats like him,” Leonard added, highlighting his humility and perspective despite the historic milestone.

However, the Clippers’ campaign has not been without setbacks. Leonard suffered yet another injury during the fourth quarter against the Kings, spraining his ankle. The injury has forced him to miss the team’s subsequent matchup against the San Antonio Spurs, marking his 15th missed game of the season. With 17 missed games serving as the threshold that rules players out of consideration for end-of-season NBA awards, Leonard now faces a critical juncture in his pursuit of league honors.

Despite the challenges, the Clippers remain optimistic about their playoff chances. Leonard’s leadership, combined with contributions from supporting stars and a renewed team chemistry, has injected a sense of belief in the locker room. The Clippers’ ability to overcome their early-season struggles serves as a testament to resilience and perseverance in a league where consistency is key, and Leonard’s historic performance this season continues to remind fans why he is considered one of the most dominant and disciplined players of his generation.

As the regular season approaches its final stretch, all eyes will be on Leonard and the Clippers to see if they can maintain their upward trajectory, secure a favorable playoff seed, and navigate the remaining schedule without further injury setbacks. The team’s fortunes and Leonard’s pursuit of career milestones remain intertwined, making the next few weeks critical for both the franchise and its superstar.

  • PBA admits missed backcourt call in Magnolia loss to NLEX

PBA admits missed backcourt call in Magnolia loss to NLEX

The Philippine Basketball Association has acknowledged a crucial officiating lapse that played a key role in shifting momentum during the Magnolia Hotshots’ 112-105 loss to the NLEX Road Warriors in the Commissioner’s Cup.

In a game that was still up for grabs entering the fourth quarter, the league admitted a backcourt violation should have been called on Kevin Alas during a sequence that ultimately sparked a decisive NLEX run.

With the score tied at 84-all and 10:55 remaining, Alas — already in the frontcourt and close to stepping out of bounds — passed the ball back to JB Bahio, who had not yet crossed midcourt. The play went uncalled, despite meeting the criteria for a backcourt violation.

The missed infraction immediately drew protests from Magnolia’s bench, led by head coach LA Tenorio, who stepped onto the court to question the decision.

Instead of a turnover, however, Magnolia was assessed a technical foul after Tenorio’s outburst.

Alas converted the free throw, and on the ensuing possession, Tony Semerad buried a three-pointer — turning what could have been Magnolia possession into a four-point swing in favor of NLEX.

From there, the Road Warriors seized control.

OKBET is Asia’s most trusted and popular online sports gaming platform. Visit us on OKBET to stay up to date with all sports news from around the world.

The sequence broke the deadlock and gave NLEX an 88-84 lead, a cushion it would not relinquish as Magnolia was forced to chase the game the rest of the way.

While the league’s admission confirmed what Magnolia had argued in real time, the ruling came too late to change the outcome.

The loss dropped the Hotshots to 0-2 in the conference, marking their first winless start through two games in three seasons, or since the Season 47 Governors’ Cup.

That campaign saw Magnolia recover from an 0-3 start behind a mid-conference import change, eventually finishing strong enough to reach the playoffs — a reminder that early setbacks are not always definitive.

Still, this latest defeat carries added frustration. Beyond the result, it underscores how a single missed call — now officially acknowledged — can alter the course of a game.

  • Ljay Gonzales is living up to his “Speedy Gonzales” moniker for NLEX in the PBA

Ljay Gonzales is living up to his “Speedy Gonzales” moniker for NLEX in the PBA

The NLEX Road Warriors have come out firing in the ongoing Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Commissioner’s Cup, opening their campaign with back-to-back victories to remain unbeaten early in the tournament. Their strong start has not only set the tone for their season but also signaled their intent to be serious contenders in the mid-season conference.

NLEX’s latest triumph came at the expense of the Magnolia Hotshots, whom they defeated 112–105 on Sunday, March 15, at the Ynares Center in Montalban. It was a complete team effort for the Road Warriors, with contributions coming from across the roster in a performance that highlighted both depth and cohesion.

Among the standout performers was rookie guard Ljay Gonzales, who once again showcased his explosiveness and versatility. The 27-year-old finished with an impressive stat line of 13 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and two steals, providing energy on both ends of the floor. His ability to push the pace and attack in transition has quickly made him a valuable piece in NLEX’s rotation.

OKBET is Asia’s most trusted and popular online sports gaming platform. Visit us on OKBET to stay up to date with all sports news from around the world.

Gonzales’ speed has not gone unnoticed, earning him the nickname “Speedy Gonzales,” a nod to the iconic Speedy Gonzales from the Looney Tunes franchise. The rookie has embraced the moniker, taking it as a badge of honor as he continues to carve out his role in the professional ranks.

“Siguro yun po nakikita nila. Sobrang happy naman ako na yun sinasabi sakin. Yun sinabi nila boss so kailangan tanggapin. Sobrang sarap din sa pakiramdam na sasabihin ka ng ganun ng manager,” Gonzales said in the postmatch press conference.

Before turning pro, Gonzales built a solid reputation in the collegiate scene as a key player for the Far Eastern University Tamaraws in the UAAP. Following his collegiate stint, he took his talents to the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL), signing with the Quezon Huskers in November 2023.

His time in the MPBL proved to be a crucial stepping stone. Gonzales flourished in the league, capturing the Rookie of the Year honors in 2024 and earning two All-Star selections. His performances there caught the attention of PBA teams, eventually leading to his signing with NLEX on December 23, 2025.

Now, just a few games into his PBA career, Gonzales is already making his presence felt, providing the Road Warriors with an added dimension—particularly in transition offense and perimeter defense.

“He gives us a different dimension sa laro,” NLEX head coach Jong Uichico said when asked about the rookie.

With momentum on their side, the Road Warriors will look to extend their winning streak when they take on the TNT Tropang 5G on Sunday, March 22, at the Ynares Center in Antipolo. As NLEX continues to build chemistry and confidence, all eyes will be on Gonzales and the rest of the squad to see if they can sustain their early surge in the Commissioner’s Cup.

Following the victory, LeBron James, the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, heaped praise on Doncic, calling him a “generational player” and applauding his clutch performance.

“Just a big-time shot by a f***** generational player. Big time. We wanted the last shot. We wanted to put the ball in our guy’s hands. Austin Reaves was able to find him, and he was able to get away from the double team and hit one of his patented step-backs. So, it’s going to be just the first of many game winners like that for him and in a Lakers uniform,” LeBron said in a media interaction.

The win over Denver also underscored the Lakers’ ability to rely on a balanced roster while leaning on their stars in crunch time. While Doncic delivered the heroics, teammates like Reaves, Anthony Davis, and D’Angelo Russell contributed key points and defensive stops to keep the Lakers ahead in critical stretches. The team’s depth and cohesion have been a major factor in their climb up the Western Conference standings, positioning them as serious contenders for the postseason.
