    Gilas Pilipinas Women have begun their journey toward a potential return to the global stage, departing for Lyon, France on Sunday night to compete in the FIBA Women’s World Cup 2026 Qualifying Tournament.

     

    The Philippine squad left Manila carrying a mix of experience and youth as they prepare for a demanding schedule against some of the world’s top-ranked teams.

     

    Among those who made the trip were Afril Bernardino, Janine Pontejos, Kacey dela Rosa, Kent Pastrana, Ann Pingol, Trina Guytingco, Angel Surada, Stefanie Berberabe, and Louna Ozar. Leading the delegation is Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas executive director Erika Dy along with head coach Patrick Aquino.

     

    The trip also serves as a reunion for several members of the national pool who recently shared success on the regional stage. Bernardino, Pontejos, Surada, Ozar, Dignadice, Pingol, Guytingco, Dela Rosa, and Heyn were part of the Philippine squad that captured the gold medal in the 33rd Southeast Asian Games, giving the team a strong sense of continuity heading into the qualifiers.

    In Lyon, however, Gilas Women will face a far tougher challenge.

     

    The Philippines opens its campaign against world No. 3 France on Thursday at 3:30 a.m. Manila time before facing No. 12 Germany on Friday at 12 a.m. The team then continues its schedule against No. 8 Nigeria on Saturday at 9 p.m., No. 15 South Korea on Sunday at 7:30 p.m., and No. 19 Colombia on Tuesday at 9 p.m.

     

    Currently ranked No. 39 in the world, the Filipinas enter the tournament as underdogs but remain determined to test themselves against higher-ranked competition.

     

    The road to qualification will not be easy, with only two teams from Tournament D advancing to the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup set for September 4 to 13 in Berlin.

     

    Germany has already secured its place as the host nation, while Nigeria booked its spot by winning the 2025 Afrobasket, leaving the remaining teams battling for the final berths in the global showcase.

    The recent home stand of Gilas Pilipinas in the FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers may not have produced the results the team hoped for, but it did little to shake their position in the global rankings.

     

    Despite back-to-back defeats against two of Oceania’s basketball powerhouses, the Philippines remained at No. 36 in the latest FIBA world rankings released on March 3.

     

    Gilas endured a difficult second window in front of the home crowd at the Mall of Asia Arena, falling just short in a tight battle with New Zealand before suffering a lopsided loss to Australia days later.

     

    The Nationals were first dealt a heartbreaking 69-66 defeat by the Tall Blacks last Thursday, where the Filipinos stayed within striking distance throughout but ultimately could not close the gap in the final moments.

     

    Things became even tougher on Sunday as Australia asserted its depth and firepower, handing Gilas a 93-66 loss to cap the window.

     

    Even with the setbacks, the Philippines maintained its No. 36 ranking — the same position it climbed to in December 2025 following dominant victories against Guam in the previous qualifying window.

    The Macau Black Bears will begin their 2026 PBA Commissioner’s Cup campaign with Tony Mitchell as their starting import.


    The 6-foot-7 American power forward was listed as the team’s official reinforcement in the roster submitted ahead of the mid-season tournament, putting him at the forefront of Macau’s opening lineup.

     

    Mitchell brings previous PBA experience into the role. He last played in the league during the 2019 Commissioner’s Cup, where he suited up for NLEX and made his presence felt with his athleticism and scoring ability.

    After nearly three years away from competitive basketball in the league, Mikey Williams is beginning a new journey and this time with Converge, as he works his way back toward the PBA spotlight.

     

    The former Finals MVP has already touched down in Manila and wasted no time settling into preparation mode, according to Converge team governor Archen Cayabyab. From the moment he arrived earlier this week, Williams showed eagerness to get back to work.

     

    “Very highly motivated siya. Talagang naka-focus ang bata. Ang unang nga niyang hinanapan, gym. Gym kaagad. He is totally fit. Talagang babawi siya ngayong this coming conference,” Cayabyab said.

     

    Williams has already started participating in team activities with the FiberXers as they gear up for the upcoming PBA Commissioner’s Cup. 

     

    His reintegration into the squad began during the team’s bonding trip in Laguna, where he joined teammates in a recent team-building activity before returning to on-court preparations.

     

    The Converge guard is now working through the early stages of his comeback, focusing not only on conditioning but also reconnecting with the rhythm of team basketball. 

     

    His last appearance in a competitive PBA game dates back to April 21, 2023, when TNT edged Barangay Ginebra, 97-93, in the Finals — a series that saw Williams capture his second Finals MVP award.

    While the talent and experience are unquestioned, Cayabyab acknowledged that the adjustment period is still ongoing, especially with the Commissioner’s Cup approaching quickly.

    “Sinabi niya kumbaga hindi siya pumunta sa team para makasira sa team. Pero nandito siya para makatulong sa goal ng team na gusto makarating sa semis muna hanggang sa makarating ng championship,” he said.

     

    Cayabyab admitted the biggest concern lies in the timing and game rhythm Williams needs to regain after such a long layoff.
