    Speculation has been running rampant online about Gilas Pilipinas’ lineup for Window 2 of the FIBA Basketball World Cup Asian Qualifiers. Social media has been abuzz after names and photos of a supposed “Final 12” appeared on FIBA’s official website for the games against New Zealand on February 26 and Australia on March 1.

     

    The roster posted included Chris Newsome, RJ Abarrientos, Scottie Thompson, June Mar Fajardo, Cjay Perez, Dwight Ramos, Japeth Aguilar, Kevin Quiambao, Justin Brownlee, Carl Tamayo, AJ Edu, and Quentin Millora-Brown. Notably missing was 7-foot-3 Kai Sotto, who has just returned from an ACL injury and resumed play with the Koshigaya Alphas in Japan’s B.League.

     

    Despite the online buzz, Gilas head coach Tim Cone emphasized that nothing has been finalized. “No, not at all,” Cone said when asked if the lineup had been set. “That is still very much to be determined.”

    Cone has previously expressed excitement about Sotto’s potential return to the national team after sitting out more than a year. “We’re excited about Kai, but still tempering expectations,” Cone said.

    The NBA confirmed the punishment via a release, stating, “Detroit Pistons forward-center Isaiah Stewart has been suspended seven games for leaving the bench area, aggressively entering on-court altercation, and fighting, it was announced today by James Jones, Executive Vice President, Head of Basketball Operations. The length of Stewart’s suspension is based on his repeated history of unsportsmanlike acts.

     

    “Additionally, Charlotte Hornets forwards Miles Bridges and Moussa Diabate have each been suspended four games for fighting and escalating the altercation, and Pistons center Jalen Duren has been suspended two games for initiating the altercation and fighting.

     

    “The incident began when Diabate committed a defensive foul on Duren with 7:09 remaining in the third quarter of the Pistons’ 110-104 victory over the Hornets on February 9 at Spectrum Center. All four players were assessed technical fouls and ejected from the game.

     

    “Stewart and Duren will begin serving their suspensions tomorrow when the Pistons visit the Toronto Raptors at Scotiabank Arena. Bridges and Diabate will also begin serving their suspensions tomorrow when the Hornets host the Atlanta Hawks at Spectrum Center,” the statement read.

    Tensions boiled over during multiple skirmishes in Monday’s matchup. The initial incident began when Diabate fouled Duren. After a brief exchange of words, Duren shoved Diabate in the face. Diabate responded by charging at Duren, igniting a larger confrontation before officials intervened. Bridges then escalated the situation by charging at Duren and throwing a punch, and Stewart left the bench to involve himself in the scuffle. Following a lengthy review, officials ejected Stewart, Bridges, Diabate, Duren, and Hornets head coach Charles Lee.

    Despite the chaos, Detroit secured the win and continues to lead the Eastern Conference at 39-13, holding the second-best record in the NBA.     “All our professional athletes are bound by the code of ethics, one of the provisions of which is for them to respect their fellow players. And respect could mean not to inflict physical injuries on your fellow player,” Rivero said during a media interaction.

     

    “If this is proven that there is an infraction, then we can discipline the players and disciplining the players could mean suspension or if the offense is grave enough – revocation of license,” he added.

     

    Rivero explained that the GAB maintains jurisdiction over licensed players even if incidents occur overseas.

     

    “The principle of territoriality will not apply here because, the person is under our jurisdiction, so they have a license with us. So, regardless of the place of the commission of the offense, we have a say on that – of course, that’s subject to us knowing the facts,” Rivera continued.

    However, the GAB intends to allow the league to act first. Rivero said the board will wait for the PBA’s recommendation and evaluation before imposing any sanctions.

     

    “If this is already brought to their attention, then the expectation is that they will impose disciplinary sanction on players. They have done that in the past, they suspend players, they ban players. They should have the first crack.

     

    “League pa rin dapat ang unang mag-decide. Number one, that player has a contract with the team, and the team has a contract with the league and it has provisions regarding the discipline of the players.

     

    “But of course, it will not prevent us from looking into the case. At present, we are not informed of the facts. Para kasi kaming appellate court, mauuna muna yung trial court for the trial court to gather all the facts para pagdating sa amin, kumpleto. Right now, we are doing our own diligence and investigation,” Rivera concluded.

     

    The Zamboanga Valientes have since filed a police complaint in Dubai, signaling their intent to pursue formal action over the incident. As of this writing, Romero Fernandez has yet to issue a public statement or apology, further intensifying scrutiny from fans, coaches, and analysts.

     

    The controversy comes at a crucial time, with the East Asia Super League (EASL) set for its next slate of games.     The 2026 National Basketball Association (NBA) All-Star Game will be missing one of the league’s brightest stars after it was confirmed that Golden State Warriors icon Stephen Curry will sit out due to a lingering right knee issue. Curry, who has been a central figure for the Warriors for over a decade, will miss at least five games as he focuses on recovery and injury management, leaving a noticeable void in the All-Star roster.

     

    The announcement came from Warriors head coach Steve Kerr, who emphasized the need to prioritize Curry’s long-term health over immediate appearances. For Curry, the decision was a difficult one, as he has long been a staple in All-Star competitions and remains an integral part of the Warriors’ success on both ends of the floor.

     

    “It’s a matter of learning as I go what works rehab-wise. Because it’s still painful. You have to try to get rid of all the inflammation and pain. It’s something we still have to monitor and injury-manage, but it’s something where, if I come back too early, it could flare up,” Curry said of his ongoing recovery.

Toronto Raptors forward Brandon Ingram was named as Curry’s replacement by NBA commissioner Adam Silver. Ingram, now in his prime at 28, is enjoying a stellar season with the Raptors, averaging 22.0 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game across 52 appearances. He currently ranks 16th in the league in total points with 1,143 and has scored 20 or more points in 33 games this season, proving his consistency and offensive firepower.

    This All-Star nod marks the second selection in Ingram’s career, joining guard-forward Scottie Barnes and head coach Darko Rajakovic as the other representatives from Toronto in this year’s showcase.
