Seven icons to be inducted into the Philippine Sports Hall of Fame

Some legacies go beyond the scoreboard. On May 20, seven of the country’s most distinguished athletes will take their place in history, not just for what they achieved, but for what they represented during their time wearing the national colors.

Dubbed the ā€œMagnificent Seven,ā€ this newest class of Hall of Fame inductees reflects a diverse era of Philippine sports.

Leading the group is Olympic silver medalist Monsueto ā€œOnyokā€ Velasco, whose run in boxing remains one of the nation’s most cherished Olympic memories.

He is joined by basketball legend Ramon Fernandez, along with fellow standouts Eduardo Pacheco, Isidro del Prado, Beatrice Lucero-Lhuillier, Cecil Mamiit, and para-athlete Adeline Dumapong-Ancheta—each carrying a story that helped elevate Philippine sports on both local and international stages.

Their inclusion was no simple decision. From a pool of 75 nominees, the final seven emerged after careful deliberation, underscoring just how deep the country’s sporting history runs.

ā€œThere were 75 nominees who were deserving but we had to choose the brightest among them,ā€ Tolentino, the POC president said.

The rigorous selection process was carried out by a distinguished panel led by Patrick Gregorio and Abraham Tolentino, alongside Francisco Rivera, Jarryd Belo, Jose Malonzo, Xavier Virata, and Al Panlilio. Supporting the process was a Review and Evaluation Committee composed of respected media practitioners such as Jun Lomibao, Al Mendoza, Ignacio Dee, Quinito Henson, and Dodo Catacutan, ensuring a balanced and credible selection.

Officials are already exploring changes that would expand recognition beyond athletes and coaches, potentially honoring contributors who helped shape the sporting landscape from behind the scenes. These proposed updates, however, will require legislative backing before they can take effect in future inductions.

For the Philippine Sports Commission, the Hall of Fame serves a deeper purpose than recognition alone. It is meant to preserve identity, to tell stories that define what it means to compete for country and flag.

ā€œThe Philippine Sports Hall of Fame is more than just an honor roll of medals—it is a living ledger of greatness to honor those who have defined what it means to be Filipino in sport. They are the pride and memory of a nation,ā€ Gregorio, PSC chairman said.

As the fifth batch of inductees, the ā€œMagnificent Sevenā€ will bring the total number of honorees to 54, adding their names to a growing lineage that dates back to the Hall’s creation through Republic Act No. 8757.

More than a ceremony, their induction marks the continuation of a story—one where past achievements fuel future inspiration, and where every generation is reminded of the standard set before them.

  • Alex Eala takes on Fil-Canadian Leylah Fernandez in Stuttgart Open Round of 32Ā

Alex Eala takes on Fil-Canadian Leylah Fernandez in Stuttgart Open Round of 32Ā

For Alex Eala, the next tournament isn’t just another stop—it’s an opportunity to break a pattern.

After a series of promising runs that all ended at the same stage, the Filipina tennis standout headed into the Stuttgart Open in Germany.

Standing in her way right from the start is a familiar and intriguing challenge. Eala opens her campaign on Tuesday (Manila time) against Canada’s Leylah Fernandez, a World No. 25 and former US Open finalist who also shares Filipino roots through her mother.

It’s a matchup that blends narrative and difficulty, pitting a rising contender against a proven name on the WTA Tour.

Fernandez, 23, has already climbed as high as World No. 14 and owns five WTA titles, with her breakout moment coming as runner-up in the 2021 US Open. Her experience on big stages presents an immediate test for Eala, who continues to carve out her place among the sport’s elite.

There is also a bit of history between them—albeit in a different format. The two previously crossed paths in doubles at the Abu Dhabi Open last February, where Eala, alongside Indonesia’s Janice Tjen, came out on top against Fernandez and Kristina Mladenovic, 7-5, 3-6, 10-6. While that result offers little tactical carryover to singles, it adds a layer of familiarity heading into their Stuttgart clash.

OKBET is Asia’s most trusted and popular online sports gaming platform. Visit us on OKBET to stay up to date with all sports news from around the world.

Eala enters the tournament searching for a breakthrough. The 20-year-old has consistently put herself in position, reaching the Round of 16 in recent tournaments such as Linz, Miami, and Indian Wells. But each run has ended just short of a deeper push, leaving a sense that she is close—but not quite there yet.

Her most recent outing in Linz captured that frustration. Facing World No. 23 Jelena Ostapenko, Eala showed flashes of control, building a 4-2 lead in the opening set and racing to a commanding 5-1 advantage in the second. Yet the match slipped away, ending in a 6-4, 7-5 loss that underscored the fine margins at this level.

Those moments, however, are part of the process.

A product of the Rafa Nadal Academy, Eala has steadily built her game against top-tier competition, learning how to navigate both momentum swings and closing situations. Now, the challenge is turning those lessons into results.

And in Stuttgart, the test comes immediately. Against a seasoned opponent like Fernandez, there will be little room for slow starts or missed opportunities. But for Eala, that may be exactly the kind of stage she needs.

  • Karl Eldrew Yulo misses podium in FIG World Cup Croatia leg as fatigue slows rising gymnast

Karl Eldrew Yulo misses podium in FIG World Cup Croatia leg as fatigue slows rising gymnast

The grind of the FIG World Cup series proved unforgiving for Karl Eldrew Yulo, who missed out on podium finishes in both the floor exercise and horizontal bar at the Croatia leg held in Osijek.

Hampered by a foot issue and visible fatigue, the 18-year-old placed seventh in the floor exercise with a score of 13.600.

The event was ruled by Artem Dolgopyat, the former Olympic gold medalist, who topped the field with 14.500. He was followed by Harry Hepworth with 14.433 and Noam Berkovich with 14.000.

The packed competition schedule appeared to take its toll on Yulo, who has been one of the busiest athletes in the circuit.

In just a span of weeks, he competed across four World Cup legs—highlighted by a gold medal in Antalya, Turkey, and two bronze finishes in Cairo, Egypt less than a week prior to Osijek.

The challenge continued in the horizontal bar, where Yulo placed eighth in the final with a score of 13.366 after registering 13.733 in the qualifiers. Tang Chia-Hung dominated the apparatus with a 15.233, while Milad Karimi (14.933) and Angel Barajas (14.833) completed the podium.

Still, Osijek was less a setback and more a reflection of the demands placed on a rising athlete navigating the senior international stage.

OKBET is Asia’s most trusted and popular online sports gaming platform. Visit us on OKBET to stay up to date with all sports news from around the world.

For Yulo, simply reaching both finals again—just as he did in Baku and Cairo—reinforced his growing consistency against a deep global field.

What stands out in this stretch is not just the medals he has collected, but the pace at which he is adapting.

Transitioning from breakthrough performances to sustaining them week after week is a different challenge altogether, and Yulo is now experiencing that reality firsthand. Each leg has tested a different aspect of his game—execution, endurance, and recovery.

More importantly, this phase signals a crucial learning curve. With the pressure of expectations steadily rising, Yulo is building the kind of resilience that cannot be taught in training alone.

The missed podium in Osijek may sting, but it also adds to a body of experience that is shaping him into a more complete competitor.

As the World Cup series pushes forward, the focus for Yulo shifts from chasing finishes to managing form and longevity.

His early gold in Antalya and double bronzes in Cairo have already proven his capability—now, it becomes a matter of sustaining that level while navigating the physical and mental toll of elite competition.

  • Manny Pacquiao calls for stronger global investment in youth sports in United Nations speech

Manny Pacquiao calls for stronger global investment in youth sports in United Nations speech

Philippine boxing legend Manny Pacquiao continues to expand his influence far beyond the ring, this time taking center stage at a United Nations session in New York City, where he delivered a keynote address on the power of sport in shaping young lives and promoting peace.

    Ā

Widely regarded as the greatest athlete to emerge from the Philippines—and one of the most accomplished boxers in history—Pacquiao was invited to speak at the UN event titled ā€œSports for Youth Empowerment and Prevention of Violent Extremism.ā€ The session highlighted how sports can serve as a powerful tool in addressing social issues, fostering unity, and creating opportunities for youth in vulnerable communities.

    Ā

During his address, Pacquiao reflected on his personal journey from extreme poverty in General Santos City to becoming an eight-division world champion and global sporting icon. He emphasized how discipline, structure, and hope—instilled through boxing—transformed the trajectory of his life.

    Ā

    Ā

Growing up in hardship, Pacquiao said sport became his pathway out of poverty and a foundation for personal growth. His story, he noted, is not unique, as many young people around the world face similar struggles and are in need of guidance and opportunity.

    Ā

At the core of his message was a call for stronger global investment in youth sports programs, particularly in underserved and conflict-affected regions. Pacquiao highlighted examples from the Philippines, including community-based sports initiatives in Mindanao, where organized athletic programs have helped promote peace, trust, and social cohesion in areas historically affected by conflict.

ā€œToday, there are many young people around the world waiting for that same opportunity. They need support. They need guidance. They need a path forward. We must not fail them,ā€ Pacquiao said.

    Ā

He further urged world leaders and institutions to recognize sport as more than competition, but as a vehicle for development, education, and long-term peacebuilding.

    Ā

ā€œLet us work together to strengthen the role of sport as a tool for peace, development, and the prevention of violence and extremism. Let us invest in our youth and expand opportunities for them to grow and succeed. And let us ensure that every young person, no matter where they come from, has the chance to choose a better future,ā€ he added.

    Ā

Pacquiao’s appearance at the UN was made possible through an invitation from the Philippine Mission to the United Nations. He previously served as a UN Games Ambassador, a role that further solidified his advocacy for youth development and sports diplomacy on the global stage.

    Ā

Beyond his political and philanthropic work, Pacquiao remains a towering figure in global sport. His achievements in boxing—spanning multiple weight divisions and decades of dominance—have earned him a place among the all-time greats. Yet, as his latest UN appearance shows, his legacy continues to evolve well beyond championship belts and historic fights.

    Ā

From world titles to global advocacy, Pacquiao’s message remains consistent: sport has the power to change lives, and every young person deserves the chance to discover that path.

  • Eldrew Yulo stays in medal hunt, qualifies second in Osijek World Cup floor exercise finals after Cairo breakthrough

Eldrew Yulo stays in medal hunt, qualifies second in Osijek World Cup floor exercise finals after Cairo breakthrough

Fresh off a breakout stretch that included double bronze medals in Cairo, Karl Eldrew Yulo carried his momentum into the FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Cup leg in Osijek, Croatia, putting together another strong showing to book a place in the floor exercise finals.

Yulo delivered a composed and controlled routine in the qualifiers, scoring 14.200 to finish second among 52 competitors.

He trailed only United States gymnast Kameron Nelson, who led the field with 14.300, but comfortably secured his spot in the medal round with a performance that reflected his growing consistency on the international stage.

Yahor Sharamkou (14.133), 2023 world champion and 2020 Tokyo Olympics gold medalist Artem Dolgopyat (14.133), Great Britain’s Harry Hepworth (14.066), Slovenia’s Anže Hribar (14.033), Noam Berkovich (14.000), and 2020 Tokyo Olympic silver medalist Rayderley Zapata of Spain are also the finalists who will advance to the Finals.

Yulo’s recent run on the World Cup circuit has been marked by steady progress. After capturing bronze medals in both floor exercise and horizontal bar in Cairo, he earlier made a breakthrough in Antalya, Turkey, where he won gold in the floor exercise in his first major senior-level success on the circuit, signaling his ability to compete for podium finishes across multiple events.

What has stood out in his performances is not just the difficulty of his routines, but his growing consistency under pressure.

Competing against Olympic and world champions, Yulo has repeatedly managed to stay within reach of the top scores, showing maturity in execution and control that bodes well for the finals.

The Osijek stop now shifts focus to the medal round, where execution and landing precision will be even more critical as scores tighten and pressure increases.

For Yulo, the challenge will be to replicate his qualifying form while minimizing deductions against a stacked field of finalists.

With momentum on his side, the young Filipino gymnast enters the finals as a genuine podium contender, continuing to build his reputation as one of the rising names in the World Cup circuit.

As the circuit progresses, Yulo’s performances are beginning to shape him into a more complete international contender rather than just a promising newcomer. Each meet is adding layers of experience that strengthen his confidence against the world’s elite.

With qualifying for other apparatuses still ongoing on Friday, April 10, Yulo’s campaign in Osijek remains one to watch as he looks to convert another strong showing into a potential podium finish.

  • Filipino Olympian Mary Joy Tabal now leads Mandaue Sports Office while balancing motherhood

Filipino Olympian Mary Joy Tabal now leads Mandaue Sports Office while balancing motherhood

One of the most accomplished distance runners in Philippine history, Mary Joy Tabal continues to make her mark on the sport—this time off the road—while balancing a new and equally important role as a mother.

    Ā

Tabal etched her name into the record books when she became the first Filipina marathoner to qualify for the Olympic Games, earning her spot in the 2016 Rio Olympics. Her historic qualification remains a defining moment for Philippine athletics, inspiring a new generation of long-distance runners to pursue the global stage.

    Ā

Now 36, Tabal has transitioned into public service as the sports development officer for the Mandaue City Sports Office in Mandaue City. In a recent guest appearance on Off the Court, she opened up about her life after competitive racing—one that requires her to juggle administrative duties while staying hands-on as a parent.

    Ā

    Ā

ā€œI’m very grateful that I get to work here in Mandaue. It’s perfect because after the pandemic, I got the opportunity to lead the Mandaue City Sports Office. I really need to give Athena parent time, so I don’t want to be an absent mom. I bring her to the office, and in most of my activities, she’s there. I’m being a mother and working at the same time,ā€ Tabal said.

    Ā

Her transition from elite athlete to sports administrator has been seamless in many ways, largely because of the perspective she gained during her years representing the country. Tabal emphasized that her firsthand experience allows her to better understand and respond to the needs of athletes under her care.

ā€œWhat’s good about being a former athlete leading the office is that I understand what athletes need. I empathize with them. When they ask for support, I explain the limitations but also how we can help them. We make sure to recognize winners and release incentives as fast as possible. Before, I experienced winning without receiving incentives. Now, we focus on proper recognition,ā€ she added.

    Ā

That empathy is rooted in a decorated career that saw Tabal compete at the highest levels across Southeast Asia and beyond. She represented the Philippines in three editions of the Southeast Asian Games, capturing silver medals in the 2015 Singapore Games and the 2019 Philippine-hosted edition, before reaching the pinnacle with a gold medal performance in the 2017 Kuala Lumpur Games.

    Ā

Domestically, Tabal dominated the long-distance scene, winning the women’s division of the prestigious National Milo Marathon Finals for six consecutive years from 2013 to 2018—a feat that underscored her consistency and endurance. Her achievements did not go unnoticed, as she was named 2016 Athlete of the Year by the Sportswriters Association of Cebu.

    Ā

On the international stage, Tabal also tested herself against world-class competition. She represented the Philippines in the 2016 Boston Marathon alongside fellow Filipino runner Rafael Poliquit Jr., finishing 20th—a respectable showing in one of the world’s most prestigious races.

    Ā

While her competitive days may be behind her, Tabal’s commitment to Philippine sports remains unwavering. Through her work in grassroots development and athlete support in Mandaue, she is helping shape the next generation—ensuring that young talents are given opportunities and recognition that were not always available during her own career.

    Ā

In many ways, Tabal’s journey has come full circle. From breaking barriers as an Olympian to nurturing future champions, she continues to embody the spirit of perseverance and service—proving that her impact on Philippine athletics extends far beyond the finish line.

  • Alex Eala bows out of Linz Open after Jelena Ostapenko rally, eyes Stuttgart Main Draw debut

Alex Eala bows out of Linz Open after Jelena Ostapenko rally, eyes Stuttgart Main Draw debut

Alex Eala saw her campaign at the WTA 500 Linz Open come to an end after absorbing a 6-4, 7-5 defeat to Jelena Ostapenko in the Round of 16 on Wednesday.

The one-hour and 43-minute match saw Ostapenko finally break through against Eala, earning her victory over the Filipina after dropping their first two meetings on the pro tour. It was also their first encounter on clay.

Eala showed early control in the opening set, building a 4-2 advantage before Ostapenko responded with four straight games to steal the set, 6-4.

The Latvian leaned on her aggressive shot-making to dictate play, overpowering Eala in baseline exchanges.

The 20-year-old Filipina appeared on track to extend the match after surging to a 5-1 lead in the second set. However, Ostapenko mounted a strong comeback, capitalizing on Eala’s struggles to finish points and regaining control of the rallies.

Despite tallying double-digit double faults and unforced errors, the 28-year-old Latvian closed out six consecutive games to complete the straight-sets win, 7-5.

ā€œShe’s a good player. This year, I’ve been beating players I’ve never beat before which means I’m on the right path,ā€ Ostapenko said after the match.

The loss halts Eala’s run in her first clay-court tournament of the 2026 season and her ninth tournament overall this year.

Ostapenko, a former Grand Slam champion, advances to the quarterfinals where she will face Elena-Gabriela Ruse.

Despite the early exit, Eala quickly shifts focus to her next assignment at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Germany.

Initially slated for the qualifying draw, she was promoted to the main draw following the withdrawal of Zheng Qinwen.

Eala is set to compete in a stacked field featuring top-ranked players including world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, No. 2 Elena Rybakina, No. 3 Coco Gauff, and No. 4 Iga Swiatek.

Eala will look to regroup as she continues her clay-court campaign in Stuttgart next week.

  • PSC Partners with FDM Institute to boost Filipino athletes’ vision and performance

PSC Partners with FDM Institute to boost Filipino athletes’ vision and performance

The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) continues to expand its support system for national athletes, reinforcing its commitment to provide world-class preparation as they compete on the international stage. In its latest initiative, the PSC has partnered with the FDM Neuroscience and Vision Care Research and Training Institute to enhance athletes’ visual capabilities—an often overlooked but critical component of elite sports performance.

    Ā

The collaboration, dubbed ā€œSight on the Goal: Sports Performance Vision in Action,ā€ aims to ensure that Filipino athletes benefit from cutting-edge vision science, enabling them to perform at their highest level with improved clarity, reaction time, and coordination. The program highlights the growing recognition that success in sports is not solely dependent on physical conditioning and technical skill, but also on the efficiency of visual processing and perception.

    Ā

Leading the initiative is Dr. Tess Yambot, chairman of the FDM Institute, who emphasized the long-term vision behind the partnership. She expressed optimism that the collaboration would become a sustained effort in uplifting the standards of Philippine sports.

    Ā

OKBET is Asia’s most trusted and popular online sports gaming platform. Visit us on OKBET to stay up to date with all sports news from around the world.

    Ā

ā€œWe want to create awareness that with better vision, our athletes will have better performance. We are here to help enhance the sports vision skills of the athletes geared for excellence,ā€ Yambot said during a press conference.

PSC chairman Patrick Gregorio echoed this sentiment, describing the partnership as an ā€œeye-openerā€ for Philippine sports. He underscored the importance of integrating science-backed methods into athlete development programs, particularly those that can provide a competitive edge on the global stage.

    Ā

Medical experts from the institute further explained that achieving peak performance requires more than just standard 20/20 eyesight. According to them, advanced visual skills—such as hand-eye coordination, depth perception, peripheral awareness, and rapid visual processing—are essential for athletes competing at the highest level. These attributes can significantly influence decision-making, timing, and overall execution during competition.

    Ā

Among the first beneficiaries of the program is rising Filipina tennis standout Kaye Emana, who has already undergone initial assessments. Her evaluation included a comprehensive set of tests designed to measure and improve various aspects of visual performance, such as vision skills testing, eye-hand coordination, visual tracking, reaction to light stimuli, and enhanced visual clarity during play. These assessments are expected to provide valuable insights that can be translated into tangible improvements on the court.

    Ā

The rollout of the program begins with a free two-day ā€œfunctional assessmentā€ for national athletes scheduled on April 9, to be followed by similar sessions for coaches, trainers, and sports officials on April 11. Both activities will be held at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex, a historic hub for Philippine sports development.

    Ā

With this initiative, the PSC continues to demonstrate a progressive approach in athlete preparation—embracing innovation and interdisciplinary support to ensure that Filipino competitors are equipped not only physically and mentally, but also visually, as they strive for excellence on the international stage.

  • Alex Eala opens Linz Open with strong win, sets Ostapenko rematch in Round of 16Ā

Alex Eala opens Linz Open with strong win, sets Ostapenko rematch in Round of 16Ā

Alex Eala’s clay season did not begin with flair alone. It began with control. In a surface shift that often demands patience, timing, and a different kind of discipline, the Filipina star showed she had all three, opening her campaign at the Upper Austria Ladies Linz with a composed 6-4, 6-3 win over hometown bet Julia Grabher early Wednesday morning.

    Ā

It was not just a first-round victory. It was the kind of performance that suggested Eala came into clay season with purpose.

    Ā

After spending the early part of the year navigating a packed stretch of hard-court tournaments, the 20-year-old stepped onto red clay and immediately looked settled, measured, and ready for the grind that usually defines this part of the calendar.

    Ā

Against the 29-year-old Grabher, Eala did not need to dominate every stretch of the match. She simply played the more disciplined tennis when the important moments arrived.

    Ā

The opening set was tightly contested and remained deadlocked at 4-4, but that was where Eala’s poise started to separate her. She held for 5-4, then broke Grabher at exactly the right time to take the first set, 6-4, shifting the momentum without ever needing to force the issue.

    Ā

That composure carried over into the second. After a close 2-1 start, Eala strung together a three-game run to build a 4-1 cushion, putting herself in command and forcing Grabher to chase. The Austrian tried to make one last push and cut the gap to 4-3, but Eala stayed steady, held her nerve, and closed the door from there.

    Ā

By the end of the one-hour, 42-minute contest, the bigger takeaway was not just that Eala won. It was how she managed the match.

    Ā

Clay often exposes impatience. It punishes rushed decision-making and rewards players who can stay mentally organized over long rallies and momentum swings. In her first clay outing of the season, Eala looked like a player who understood exactly what the surface was asking from her. That matters, especially considering what comes next.

    Ā

With the win, Eala advances to the second round where a much bigger challenge awaits in world No. 12 and fourth seed Jelena Ostapenko. It is a matchup that instantly adds intrigue to her campaign, not just because of Ostapenko’s stature, but because Eala has already proven she can beat her.

    Ā

The Filipina holds a 2-0 record over Ostapenko in 2025, first winning 7-6, 7-5 at the Miami Open before following it up with a 0-6, 6-2, 3-2 victory at the Lexus Eastbourne Open.

    Ā

OKBET is Asia’s most trusted and popular online sports gaming platform. Visit us on OKBET to stay up to date with all sports news from around the world.

That head-to-head edge does not guarantee anything, but it does change the tone of the matchup.

    Ā

Eala will not be walking into the second round simply hoping to compete. She will be entering it with recent proof that she can handle one of the more dangerous names in the draw.

    Ā

Even so, this opener against Grabher may end up being just as important as the marquee match ahead.

    Ā

For a player trying to build a better rhythm on clay, a solid opening performance can often mean more than a flashy one. Eala entered this stretch looking to improve on a 2-4 clay-court record across four tournaments in 2025, and starting with a straight-sets win gives her a much steadier platform moving forward.

    Ā

It also reflects the work she put in before arriving in Linz.Following her run to the round of 16 at the Miami Open — her last hard-court tournament of this stretch — Eala spent a week training on the indoor clay courts of the Rafa Nadal Academy, using that time to reset both physically and tactically for the demands of the surface.

    Ā

That preparation clearly translated. Her movement looked composed, her shot selection stayed disciplined, and perhaps most importantly, she never seemed rattled by the natural ebbs and swings of the match.

    Ā

Afterward, Eala pointed to exactly that kind of consistency as one of the biggest reasons she got through.

    Ā

ā€œI kept the intensity well throughout the match —she’s an intense player,ā€ she said.

    Ā

It was a simple line, but it captured the match well. Eala did not just play with energy. She matched intensity with steadiness, and that balance allowed her to stay one step ahead for most of the contest.

    Ā

The win also marked her 13th victory of the year, another encouraging sign in what has become a busy and steadily developing 2026 season.

    Ā

Linz is already her ninth tournament of the year, following appearances in Auckland, the Australian Open, Manila, Abu Dhabi, Qatar, Dubai, Indian Wells, and Miami. That kind of volume can wear on even experienced players, but Eala’s latest performance suggested she is still finding ways to sharpen her game rather than simply survive the schedule.

    Ā

Eldrew Yulo builds momentum with double bronze finish in Cairo World Cup

Filipino gymnast Karl Eldrew Yulo continues to carve out his own path on the international stage, closing his 2026 FIG World Cup campaign in Cairo, Egypt with a pair of bronze medals that signal both promise and progress.

In the floor exercise final on Sunday, April 5, Yulo delivered a composed routine that earned him 14.000 points—good for third place behind Bulgaria’s Daniel Marinov (14.233) and Russia’s Arsenii Dukhno (14.133).

It was a performance built not on flash alone, but on precision and consistency which is a hallmark of a gymnast steadily maturing in elite competition.

He carried that momentum into the horizontal bar, where he added another bronze with a score of 13.733. China’s Li Hongyan topped the event with 14.400, while Cyprus’ Marios Georgiou secured silver at 13.933.

Yulo’s back-to-back podium finishes underscored his versatility, proving he can compete across multiple apparatus against world-class fields.

The younger brother of two-time Olympic gold medalist Carlos Yulo, Eldrew is steadily stepping out of a towering shadow.

He qualified for the floor exercise final with a 13.900 in the preliminaries, showing early on that he belonged among the contenders.

These results come just three weeks after his breakthrough gold medal in the floor exercise at the Antalya World Cup in Turkey, giving him consecutive podium finishes in the same event.

With consistent scoring across competitions—including a sixth-place finish in Baku—Yulo now sits atop the rankings in floor exercise in the World Cup series standings.

That position places him firmly in contention for a spot at the FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships, where only the top eight gymnasts per apparatus, based on their best four results, will qualify.

Beyond the medals, what stands out is Yulo’s composure under pressure. Competing against seasoned gymnasts, he has shown an ability to deliver clean routines when it matters most—an essential trait for long-term success in the sport.

His steady rise suggests a gymnast not rushing the spotlight, but earning it performance by performance.

As the season progresses, Yulo’s journey becomes less about comparison and more about identity.
