    Just when Gilas Pilipinas thought the challenge against Australia could not get any steeper, the Boomers added another star to the equation.

     

    And not just any star.

     

    Australia is set to unleash Bryce Cotton for the first time during the third window of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers — giving the already-loaded Boomers roster one of the most accomplished players in National Basketball League history.

     

    Cotton is expected to make his long-awaited debut for the Australians on July 3 against Guam before potentially facing Gilas three days later at the RAC Arena.

     

    For the Philippines, the timing could hardly be tougher.

     

    Australia already dominated Gilas, 93-66, during the previous qualifying window last March at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

     

    Now, the world No. 6 Boomers are adding a player widely viewed as one of the greatest imports — and eventually naturalized players — the NBL has ever seen.

     

     

    The 33-year-old Cotton officially became eligible to represent Australia after securing his citizenship late in 2025, with Basketball Australia formally confirming his inclusion in the national team setup earlier this week.

     

    For Cotton, the call-up represents more than simply another basketball milestone.

     

    “Representing the Australian men’s national basketball team for the first time is something I don’t take lightly,” the six-foot guard said in a statement posted on the National Basketball League official website.

     

    “Coming from where I come from, this opportunity means a lot to me and my family. Australia has embraced me from day one, and I’m grateful for the chance to wear the green and gold alongside a great group of guys,” he added.

     

    “I’m excited, motivated, and ready to give everything I have for the country.”

    The former Providence College standout is already a three-time NBL champion and six-time league MVP — achievements that cemented his place as arguably the modern face of the league.

     

    Even at 33, he remains one of the most explosive scorers in the region.

     

    Fresh off the 2025-26 season with the Adelaide 36ers, Cotton averaged 25.9 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 7.6 assists, once again proving why opposing defenses continue to revolve around slowing him down.

     

    Now, those scoring bursts and shot-creation abilities become another problem Gilas must prepare for.

     

    Beyond the talent itself, Cotton’s arrival also highlights Australia’s growing depth entering the road toward the 2027 World Cup.

     

    The Boomers are no longer relying solely on NBA-caliber names and established international veterans.

     

    They are now supplementing that core with dominant NBL stars who already understand the physicality, pace, and demands of FIBA basketball.

     

    For Gilas, the July showdown in Perth suddenly carries an even larger challenge.

     

    Australia was already one of the world’s deepest basketball programs.

     

    With Cotton now officially in the fold, the Boomers may have just become even more dangerous.

    Boomers feel the love in Manila as rivalry turns the page

    Eight years removed from one of the darkest chapters in international basketball, Australia’s return to Manila felt less like a grudge match and more like a long-awaited reset.

     

    When the Boomers stepped onto the floor at the Mall of Asia Arena for their latest clash with Gilas Pilipinas in the FIBA World Cup Asian qualifiers, the reception was loud, passionate — and ultimately respectful. The ghosts of 2018 were still part of the narrative, but they no longer defined it.

     

    The last time Australia and the Philippines figured in a game that reverberated around the world, it was for all the wrong reasons. The infamous bench-clearing brawl during the 2019 World Cup qualifiers at the Philippine Arena resulted in 13 ejections and an 89-53 default victory for the Boomers — a flashpoint that became one of the most controversial moments in FIBA history.

    This time, the story was different.

     

    “It was a terrific atmosphere like there was a good FIBA regional game,” said Boomers coach John Peter Rillie after Australia’s commanding 93-67 victory.

     

    “Thank you to the Manila community for coming out and supporting the game the way we did.”

    The jeers came — as expected in a packed Filipino arena — but they were part of the theater, not hostility. After the final buzzer, applause followed. For the visiting Boomers, it signaled something bigger than a 27-point win: it was closure.

    “Thanks for the hospitality. It’s a great atmosphere and all the guys enjoyed it. It was really fun to play in,” said guard Elijah Pepper, who poured in 28 points highlighted by five triples.

     

    “Thank you for the hospitality that we received here in the Philippines. It’s been a terrific couple of days for our group,” Rillie added. “And I’m happy my team play well as we did.”

     

    Only two players from the 2018 incident suited up this time — June Mar Fajardo and Nick Kay. Fajardo logged limited minutes, finishing with two points and a rebound, while Kay anchored Australia’s starting unit with eight points, eight boards, and an assist.

     

    Their presence served as a quiet reminder of how much has changed. What was once a rivalry inflamed by tension has matured into a competitive but composed matchup.

     

    Australia dictated the tempo from the opening tip, stretching the lead behind crisp ball movement and second-half outside shooting. Gilas absorbed its second straight loss in the window, but the larger takeaway extended beyond the scoreboard.

     

    The evening proved that while history can’t be erased, it can be reframed.
