    Gilas Pilipinas has suffered a major blow ahead of the upcoming 20th Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan, with head coach Tim Cone confirming that naturalization prospect Bennie Boatwright will miss the tournament.

     

    Cone made the announcement during an appearance on Power and Play, the sports program hosted by former Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) commissioner Noli Eala, revealing that Boatwright will not receive his Philippine naturalization papers in time for the Asian Games.

     

    “Bennie is out there, he won’t be able to play in either tournament,” Cone said.

    The 30-year-old forward could also miss the second round of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers, where the Philippines are scheduled to host Jordan and Iraq in August.

     

    “There is a slight possibility he could play in the window, the FIBA tournament with Iran and Jordan,” Cone said.

    “The Asian Games is obviously the tournament in Japan but Bennie won’t be available because his papers didn’t come in time. Japan has stricken him in the list. But there is a slight possibility he can make it for the window.”

     

    While Boatwright’s absence is a setback, Cone received some positive news regarding another key piece of the Gilas lineup.

     

    Naturalized star Justin Brownlee is expected to suit up for both the FIBA window and the Asian Games, provided he is fully healthy by then.

     

    “We expect Justin to play on that. Assuming he is 100 percent. By that time, so basically, Justin for the FIBA window, and Justin for the Asian Games,” Cone said.

     

    Brownlee’s availability will be closely monitored after the veteran forward dealt with several injuries in recent months, including issues involving his knee, leg and hamstring that have limited his playing time for Gilas.

     

    Cone will have to manage two different Gilas squads for the two competitions, with Dwight Ramos, Carl Tamayo and Kevin Quiambao unavailable for the Asian Games because of their commitments to clubs in Japan and South Korea.

     

    Despite the personnel challenges, the Philippines will enter the Asian Games as the defending champions after ending a 57-year wait for the men’s basketball gold medal with their triumph at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games.

     

    With Boatwright out and several key players unavailable, Cone will now have to find the right combination to defend the Philippines’ Asian Games crown in Nagoya.

    The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas is now racing against time to complete Bennie Boatwright’s naturalization before the 20th Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan, where the federation hopes the former San Miguel import can finally wear Philippine colors in official competition.

     

    For months, Boatwright’s availability has depended less on basketball and more on paperwork.

    According to SBP Executive Director Erika Dy, the federation is now waiting for House Bill 6639 to officially become law after it secured Senate approval on third and final reading.

     

    “The goal is paabutin siya (Boatwright),” Dy said, referring to the national team’s target of having the 6-foot-10 forward eligible in time for the continental meet.

     

    The legislation now only requires the signature of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. If no action is taken within the constitutional period, it will automatically lapse into law.

     

    “So yan ang hinihintay natin,” Dy explained.

     

    “After nun, mag-oathtaking na siya and makakakuha na siya ng naturalization certificate sa BI (Bureau of Immigration) and yun ang dadalhin natin sa DFA (Department of Foreign Affairs) para ma-issue-han siya ng passport.”

     

    Once those formalities are completed, Boatwright is expected to immediately return to the Philippines.

     

    The 29-year-old University of Southern California product had remained in the country during the PBA Commissioner’s Cup not only to reinforce San Miguel Beer but also to attend Senate hearings related to his citizenship application before eventually returning to the United States to spend time with his family.

     

    “As soon as pwede na siyang mag-oathtaking, puwede na siyang bumalik ulit,” Dy said.

    Boatwright’s arrival would give Gilas another proven scorer with familiarity in Philippine basketball.

    The American big man first suited up for San Miguel in the 2023 Commissioner’s Cup, leading the Beermen to the championship after defeating Magnolia in the Finals. His previous stint in the PBA also works in his favor under Asian Games eligibility rules.

     

    “Ang rule kasi sa Asian Games is there’s no limit sa naturalized players. Ang definition kasi nila dyan is as long as you’re in the country for three years. And alam naman natin si Bennie first played for San Miguel three years ago, so papasok siya dun sa residency rule,” Dy explained.

     

    That eligibility could allow national team head coach Tim Cone to deploy Boatwright alongside longtime Gilas naturalized player Justin Brownlee, potentially giving the Philippines one of its deepest frontcourts in recent years as it seeks to defend the gold medal won in Hangzhou.

    “Tapos na silang mag-oathtaking, so for release na lang sa BI yung naturalization certificates nila, and then diretso na yan sa DFA for their passports,” Dy said.

     

    With the legal process entering its final stage, Gilas Pilipinas now waits for the last signature that could pave the way for another key piece in its quest to remain Asia’s basketball champion.

    “Just part of the game. Just getting back used to playing all these minutes and just getting adjusted. Simply just get back in the gym, and I will be ready for the next game,” Boatwright said after the win.

    The idea of Bennie Boatwright and Justin Brownlee sharing the floor isn’t just fan speculation anymore. It’s a scenario now being seriously considered, thanks to how eligibility rules for the 2026 Asian Games are currently being interpreted.

     

    At the center of the discussion is a technical detail that may work in the Philippines’ favor.

    Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) executive director Ericka Dy revealed that the initial reading of the tournament’s guidelines points to a relatively straightforward requirement—one that opens the door for more flexibility than usual.

     

    “Meron na tayong technical handbook. The rule is passport only with three-year residency,” said Dy on Monday.

     

    That clause, however, comes with nuance. While residency is required, it doesn’t necessarily mean continuous presence or even a passport issued three years prior—an interpretation that introduces what Dy herself described as a “gray area.”

     

    “Parang gray area daw yung three-year residency. It doesn’t mean na dapat three years na na-issue yung passport,” she explained.

     

    That distinction could prove crucial.After consulting with Abraham Tolentino, Dy said Boatwright’s prior stint in the Philippines may already count toward fulfilling the requirement. The former San Miguel import saw action during the 2023-24 PBA Commissioner’s Cup, which could serve as proof of residency under the current interpretation.

     

    “It is still possible, as per [POC] Pres. Bambol (Tolentino), I spoke to him about it, na puwede yung kay Boatwright because two years ago, he played here. So ipapakita lang yun,’’ said Dy.

    Boatwright first suited up for San Miguel Beermen on December 25, 2023, stepping in as a replacement import. Since then, he has remained on the radar not just as a PBA reinforcement, but as a potential long-term piece for the national team. His ongoing naturalization process only strengthens that possibility.

     

    If cleared, pairing him with Brownlee would give Gilas a rare combination of familiarity and versatility—two players capable of stretching defenses while anchoring the team’s offense.     “Let’s see. Ang plano naman ni Coach Tim (Cone) is to use the full Gilas team,” said Dy, referring to Tim Cone.

     

    The immediate focus now shifts to roster planning. The Philippine Olympic Committee has set an April 30 deadline for the submission of initial lineups—listed “by name only”—giving the SBP a window to include a broader pool of candidates while final eligibility clarifications are being sorted out.

     

    Dy said the federation intends to submit a list of 15 to 20 players from the current Gilas pool, with additional names potentially included. Among those expected to be part of that group are Ange Kouame and Mike Phillips, adding further depth to an already intriguing roster mix.

     

    For now, the Boatwright-Brownlee tandem remains a possibility—one grounded not in hype, but in interpretation. And as the details continue to unfold, Gilas Pilipinas may find itself with more options than expected in its quest to stay on top of Asian basketball.
