Drama in the Round of 16: Norway edge Brazil in stoppage-time thriller as England survive Mexico scare

The FIFA World Cup Round of 16 delivered a pair of gripping encounters, with late drama, momentum swings, and disciplinary turning points shaping the outcomes as Norway edged Brazil 2–1 in a tense finish, while England held off a resilient Mexico side in a 3–2 classic.

Norway 2–1 Brazil: Haaland Heroics and Late Neymar Heartbreak

In one of the most dramatic matches of the tournament so far, Norway stunned Brazil 2–1 after a frantic ending that saw Erling Haaland once again rise to the occasion, while Neymar was left to reflect on a devastating stoppage-time twist.

Brazil appeared to be pushing for control late in the match, but Norway’s disciplined defensive structure and quick transitions kept the five-time champions frustrated for long spells.

The breakthrough came in the 79th minute when Haaland powered Norway into the lead, finishing clinically after a well-worked attacking move that exposed Brazil’s back line at a crucial stage of the match.

Just when it looked like Norway would see out a famous victory, Brazil were handed a lifeline deep into stoppage time. In the 90+10 minute, Neymar stepped up under immense pressure and converted from the penalty spot, briefly restoring hope and sparking wild celebrations among the Brazilian supporters.

However, the momentum swing proved short-lived, as Norway responded almost immediately, sealing the contest with Haaland’s second goal in the 90th minute, a strike that ultimately secured a memorable 2–1 victory and sent the European side into the quarterfinals.

It was a night defined by Haaland’s decisive finishing and Norway’s resilience, while Brazil were left to rue missed opportunities and a painful collapse in the final moments.

England 3–2 Mexico: Bellingham Shines, Quansah Red Card Adds Tension

The second Round of 16 clash saw England survive a fierce challenge from Mexico, eventually prevailing 3–2 in a match that combined attacking brilliance with late defensive pressure.

England started brightly and were rewarded in the 36th minute when Jude Bellingham opened the scoring with a composed finish. The midfielder doubled his tally just two minutes later in the 38th minute, capitalizing on England’s quick attacking rhythm and Mexico’s defensive lapses.

Mexico, however, refused to back down. Julián Quiñones pulled one back in the 42nd minute, ensuring England’s lead at halftime remained under pressure heading into the second half.

Harry Kane extended England’s advantage in the 60th minute, converting confidently from the penalty spot to restore breathing room for Gareth Southgate’s side.

The match took another turn in the 54th minute when England were reduced to 10 men following a straight red card to Jarell Quansah. The dismissal shifted momentum sharply in Mexico’s favor, forcing England into a more defensive shape for the remainder of the contest.

Mexico capitalized on their numerical advantage when Raúl Jiménez converted a penalty in the 69th minute, narrowing the gap and setting up a tense final stretch.

Despite sustained pressure, England’s defense held firm in the closing stages, ensuring their progression to the quarterfinals after a hard-fought 3–2 victory.

Both matches highlighted the unpredictable nature of knockout football. Norway’s dramatic late surge against Brazil underscored their growing status as a dangerous tournament contender, while England’s disciplined response under pressure ensured they survived a spirited Mexican comeback despite being reduced to ten men.

As the tournament progresses, both winners will take confidence from their resilience—but also recognize the fine margins that defined their passage into the quarterfinals.

  • From Spain to France: Six nations with the best chance of winning the 2026 FIFA World Cup

From Spain to France: Six nations with the best chance of winning the 2026 FIFA World Cup

The road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup is well underway, with the tournament set to be the biggest in history as 48 nations compete across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

While football has often produced surprises on the global stage, history suggests that the eventual champion is usually among the pre-tournament favorites. With a blend of world-class talent, tactical depth, and tournament experience, several nations have emerged as the leading contenders to lift the trophy.

Here is a look at the six favorites to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

    1. Spain

Spain enter the tournament as one of the strongest teams in world football after their triumph at UEFA Euro 2024. La Roja have established themselves as a dominant force once again thanks to their technical quality, midfield depth, and possession-based style.

The Spanish squad boasts an impressive blend of experienced veterans and exciting young stars. Their midfield remains one of the deepest in international football, while emerging talents continue to strengthen the squad.

However, Spain’s recent World Cup record remains a concern. Since winning the tournament in 2010, they have struggled to make deep runs and have often fallen short in the knockout rounds. Questions also remain regarding the fitness of key attacking players such as Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams.

Despite those concerns, Spain’s overall quality makes them one of the leading contenders for the title.

    2. France

France continue to be among the most feared teams in international football and once again enter the World Cup as one of the favorites.

Having reached back-to-back World Cup finals in 2018 and 2022, Les Bleus possess invaluable tournament experience under long-time manager Didier Deschamps. Their attacking depth is arguably unmatched, featuring stars such as Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele, Michael Olise, and Desire Doue.

France’s combination of pace, creativity, and finishing ability makes them a threat against any opponent. Their squad depth should also help them cope with the demands of an expanded tournament format.

If they can maintain harmony within a squad filled with elite talent, France could once again find themselves competing for football’s biggest prize.

    3. England

England have established themselves as consistent contenders at major tournaments over the past decade.

After reaching the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup and back-to-back European Championship finals, the Three Lions have proven they can compete with the world’s best. Under new manager Thomas Tuchel, England hope to take the final step and end their long wait for major international silverware.

Harry Kane remains one of the most prolific goalscorers in world football, while players such as Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, and Phil Foden provide quality throughout the squad.

The biggest question surrounding England is whether they can finally overcome the pressure of knockout football and deliver their first major trophy since the 1966 World Cup.

    4. Brazil

No nation in football history has enjoyed more World Cup success than Brazil, and the five-time champions will once again be among the favorites in 2026.

The appointment of Carlo Ancelotti has generated significant optimism among Brazilian supporters. The experienced coach brings a winning pedigree and strong relationships with several key players, including superstar winger Vinicius Junior.

Brazil possess a squad loaded with attacking talent. Vinicius, Raphinha, Rodrygo, and several emerging stars provide the Selecao with a variety of offensive options capable of troubling any defense.

The South Americans could also benefit from familiar weather conditions across parts of North America, giving them an advantage over some European rivals.

If Ancelotti can find the right balance, Brazil may finally end their World Cup drought dating back to 2002.

    5. Argentina

The reigning world champions cannot be overlooked as they attempt to defend their crown in North America.

Argentina arrive with much of the core group that lifted the trophy in Qatar in 2022. Head coach Lionel Scaloni remains in charge, ensuring continuity and stability within the squad.

Although Lionel Messi will be 38 years old during the tournament, he continues to perform at a high level and remains capable of influencing matches on the biggest stage. His experience, leadership, and familiarity with playing conditions in the United States could prove invaluable.

Argentina’s biggest challenge may be the age profile of several key players. Maintaining peak performance throughout an expanded tournament schedule could be difficult, but the reigning champions possess the experience and confidence needed for another deep run.

    6. Portugal

Portugal may not receive as much attention as some of the traditional favorites, but they possess all the ingredients needed to challenge for the title.

Roberto Martinez has assembled a squad that combines experienced stars with one of the most talented young generations in Europe. Cristiano Ronaldo remains a key figure, while Bruno Fernandes continues to be one of the world’s most creative midfielders.

Portugal also benefit from a growing pool of young talent, including several players who have enjoyed success at the highest levels of European club football.

With quality across every position and considerable squad depth, Portugal have the potential to emerge as one of the most dangerous teams in the tournament.

    Final Thoughts

While surprises are always possible at the World Cup, Spain, France, England, Brazil, Argentina, and Portugal currently stand out as the leading contenders to lift the trophy in 2026.

Each nation possesses a unique blend of talent, experience, and tactical quality capable of navigating the challenges of a month-long tournament. With football’s biggest prize on the line, fans can expect another thrilling battle among the world’s elite when the World Cup kicks off in North America.

  • Football Royalty: Nations with the most FIFA World Cup trophies

Football Royalty: Nations with the most FIFA World Cup trophies

The FIFA World Cup is the pinnacle of international football, a tournament where legends are born and national heroes are immortalized. Since the inaugural competition in 1930, only a select few nations have consistently dominated the global stage. Among them, five countries stand above the rest for their extraordinary success, rich football traditions, and unforgettable moments in World Cup history.

Here is a detailed look at the five most successful teams in FIFA World Cup history.

    1. Brazil — 5 Titles

    World Cup Titles:

    • 1958
    • 1962
    • 1970
    • 1994
    • 2002

No nation has enjoyed more World Cup success than Brazil. Known worldwide for their flair, creativity, and attacking brilliance, Brazil remain the only country to have appeared in every FIFA World Cup tournament.

Brazil’s first triumph came in 1958 in Sweden, where a 17-year-old Pelé announced himself to the world. The Seleção defended their crown in 1962 before assembling what many consider the greatest football team ever in 1970, led by Pelé, Jairzinho, Rivellino, and Carlos Alberto.

After a 24-year drought, Brazil returned to the summit in 1994 behind Romário and Bebeto, defeating Italy in the first World Cup final decided by penalties. They captured their fifth title in 2002 thanks to the legendary attacking trio of Ronaldo, Rivaldo, and Ronaldinho.

    Legendary Players:

    • Pelé
    • Ronaldo Nazário
    • Ronaldinho
    • Romário

Brazil’s football identity is built around attacking freedom, technical brilliance, and joy on the ball — qualities that have made them one of the sport’s most beloved national teams.

    1. Germany — 4 Titles

    World Cup Titles:

    • 1954
    • 1974
    • 1990
    • 2014

Germany’s World Cup legacy is defined by discipline, consistency, and mental toughness. Whether as West Germany or reunified Germany, the nation has been one of the most reliable tournament performers in football history.

Their first title arrived in 1954 with the famous “Miracle of Bern,” where West Germany stunned the heavily favored Hungary side in one of football’s greatest upsets. Germany won again on home soil in 1974, defeating Johan Cruyff’s Netherlands in the final.

The 1990 triumph featured icons like Lothar Matthäus and Andreas Brehme, while the 2014 squad, led by Thomas Müller, Manuel Neuer, and Mario Götze, conquered the tournament in Brazil and defeated Argentina in the final.

    Legendary Players:

    • Franz Beckenbauer
    • Miroslav Klose
    • Lothar Matthäus
    • Manuel Neuer

Germany are also known for reaching the latter stages consistently, appearing in more World Cup finals than any other nation.

    1. Italy — 4 Titles

    World Cup Titles:

    • 1934
    • 1938
    • 1982
    • 2006

Italy’s World Cup success has traditionally been built on defensive excellence, tactical intelligence, and composure under pressure. The Azzurri became the first nation to win back-to-back World Cups after lifting the trophy in 1934 and 1938 under legendary coach Vittorio Pozzo.

Their third title came in 1982, inspired by striker Paolo Rossi, whose goals powered Italy through a memorable tournament in Spain. The fourth championship arrived in 2006 after a dramatic penalty shootout victory over France in Berlin.

Italy have often thrived in tense knockout matches, earning a reputation for defensive resilience and tactical mastery.

    Legendary Players:

    • Paolo Rossi

    • 1986
    • 2022

Argentina’s football history is deeply connected to some of the greatest players the sport has ever seen. Their first World Cup title came in 1978 on home soil, but it was the brilliance of Diego Maradona in 1986 that truly elevated Argentina into football mythology.

Maradona produced unforgettable moments in Mexico, including the famous “Goal of the Century” against England. Decades later, Lionel Messi completed his own legendary journey by leading Argentina to the 2022 World Cup title in Qatar after an epic final against France.

    • 2018

France emerged as a global football powerhouse relatively recently compared to Brazil, Germany, and Italy, but their impact has been enormous.

Their first triumph came in 1998 on home soil, inspired by Zinedine Zidane’s unforgettable performance in the final against Brazil. Two decades later, France lifted the trophy again in 2018 with a young and dynamic squad led by Kylian Mbappé, Antoine Griezmann, and Paul Pogba.

France also reached the 2006 and 2022 finals, proving their remarkable consistency in the modern era.

    Legendary Players:

    • Zinedine Zidane
    • Kylian Mbappé
    • Thierry Henry
    • Antoine Griezmann

France’s success has been fueled by elite youth development, tactical flexibility, and extraordinary attacking talent.

Honorable Mention: Uruguay — 2 Titles

    World Cup Titles:

    • 1930
    • 1950

Although Uruguay have fewer titles than the giants above, their achievements carry enormous historical significance. They won the inaugural World Cup in 1930 and stunned Brazil in the legendary “Maracanazo” in 1950, one of the greatest upsets in football history.

For a small nation, Uruguay’s football success remains extraordinary and continues to inspire generations of players worldwide.

These nations have shaped the history of the FIFA World Cup through iconic players, unforgettable finals, and generations of football excellence. Their legacies continue to influence the modern game and inspire millions of fans across the globe.

  • Neymar back in Brazil squad for 2026 World Cup campaign

Neymar back in Brazil squad for 2026 World Cup campaign

For the first time in nearly three years, the face most closely associated with modern Brazilian football is back on the world stage.

Neymar’s return to the Brazil national team was not simply another squad announcement — it became the defining moment of coach Carlo Ancelotti’s unveiling of Brazil’s 26-man roster for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Inside a gala ceremony in Rio de Janeiro, the loudest reaction from the crowd arrived when Neymar’s name was officially called, signaling the comeback of Brazil’s all-time leading goalscorer after a long and uncertain absence from international football.

For months, questions surrounded whether the 34-year-old forward could still force his way back into Brazil’s plans after battling injuries, inconsistency, and fitness concerns.

Now, after years of setbacks, Brazil is once again placing part of its World Cup hopes on the shoulders of its most recognizable star.

Neymar has not played for Brazil since suffering a serious knee injury during a World Cup qualifying match against Uruguay in 2023. Since then, injuries repeatedly interrupted his career, including a difficult spell in Saudi Arabia before eventually returning to his boyhood club Santos FC in January.

Even there, fitness problems continued to limit his impact. Neymar managed just 15 appearances in 31 matches since returning to Santos in 2026, leaving many uncertain if he could regain enough form to convince Ancelotti ahead of the tournament.

But Brazil’s coach believes the veteran still offers something statistics alone cannot fully measure.

“He has improved his fitness, he will be an important player in this World Cup,” Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti said at a press conference in Rio de Janeiro.

Ancelotti also stressed the value of experience within a tournament environment as demanding as the World Cup.

“He can still improve his fitness until the first match of the World Cup,” Ancelotti said. “He has experience in this kind of competition, the love of our group, he can create a better environment in this group.”

Despite Brazil’s star-studded attack and deep talent pool, Ancelotti emphasized that winning the World Cup will ultimately depend more on mentality and resilience than perfection.

“The World Cup won’t be won by a perfect team — because a perfect team doesn’t exist,” he said. “It will be won by the most resilient team.”

The tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico will mark Neymar’s fourth World Cup appearance after previously representing Brazil in 2014, 2018, and 2022.

Yet unlike previous tournaments where Brazil often depended heavily on him, this squad appears more balanced between established veterans and emerging stars.

Neymar joins an attack loaded with talent, including Vinicius Junior, Raphinha, and teenage striker Endrick, giving Brazil multiple offensive options entering the competition.

The squad also combines experienced leaders such as Casemiro and Marquinhos alongside younger prospects including Rayan and Luiz Henrique.

For Brazil, the objective remains unchanged, capturing a record sixth World Cup crown.

The campaign begins on June 13 against Morocco before Group C matches against Haiti and Scotland.

After years defined by injuries and uncertainty, Neymar now has another chance to chase the one achievement still missing from his career, lifting the World Cup trophy.
