    Sisi Rondina hopes Beach Volleyball gets Cebu-style showcase after 3×3 hoops spectacle

    Fresh off her wedding to fellow beach volleyball player Ronniel Rosales, Sisi Rondina spent the day after her special day supporting the Cebu Hustle 3×3 in her hometown.


    What she saw left a lasting impression, with Rondina joining the crowd to witness Japan’s Shinjuku Givers complete a perfect campaign en route to the championship, showcasing the intensity and competitiveness of women’s 3×3 basketball in front of Cebuano fans. 

     

    “Nakikita ko, the way sila maglaro. Grabe, buwis buhay. Ayun, ang saya na mapanood sila. It’s a quality 3×3 basketball for the women,” Rondina said.

     

    More than the action on the court, Rondina was inspired by what the event represented.

     

    The successful staging of Cebu Hustle 3×3 showed how major sporting events can thrive outside Metro Manila, bringing elite-level competition closer to local communities while giving young athletes an opportunity to witness high-level sports firsthand.

     

    For Rondina, Cebu has long been capable of hosting events of this scale. The tournament only reinforced her belief that more sports should be brought to the province and neighboring areas.

     

    Rondina was grateful for the opportunity and expressed her hope that more sporting events will take place in Cebu — not just in the city, but in other venues all over the province as well.

     

    “We know kahit anong sport ‘yan, maraming naglalaro,” she said.

    Naturally, one sport remains closest to her heart. As one of the country’s most successful beach volleyball tandem alongside Bernadeth Pons, Rondina hopes the attention generated by Cebu Hustle 3×3 can eventually lead to similar opportunities for beach volleyball.

     

    She believes introducing the sport to more communities is crucial to discovering future talents and growing the game nationwide.

     

    “Kaya din naman talaga gustong mag-beach volleyball ni (Bernadeth) Pons, bukod sa sobrang gusto namin maglaro, but ‘yung how we introduce beach volleyball to other places dito sa Philippines,” said Rondina.

     

    “We’re hoping na may mag-plano din na maglaro dito, ang beach volleyball. We’re very excited na makapaglaro dito, dito mismo sa hometown ko,” the SEA Games gold medalist said.

     

    The dream is especially meaningful because Cebu is where Rondina’s sporting journey began. Hosting a major beach volleyball event there would not only bring the sport closer to local fans but also allow the hometown hero to showcase it in the place that helped shape her career.

     

    For now, Rondina’s attention quickly shifts back to competition. After celebrating a major personal milestone, she and Pons return to training with a bigger goal in mind.

     

    “Walang ibang goal kundi Asian Games,” Rondina said.

     

    The pair are currently preparing for the Asian Games in September, where they hope to earn a place in the final roster and continue building on the momentum from their breakthrough SEA Games gold medal campaign last year.

     

    As Rondina looks ahead to another international challenge, she also hopes the success of events like Cebu Hustle 3×3 will inspire organizers to invest in more sports across Cebu, including the beach volleyball tournaments she dreams of bringing home.

    Cebu becomes the new stage for Women’s 3×3 as international field arrives for Cebu Hustle debut 

    For years, Cebu has been known as one of the country’s strongest basketball communities.

     

    This weekend, however, the spotlight shifts from the traditional five-on-five game to the fast-paced world of 3×3 basketball as the city welcomes an international cast of women’s teams for the first-ever Cebu Hustle 3×3 at SM Seaside City.

     

    The tournament marks another step in the continued growth of women’s basketball in the Philippines, bringing together 12 squads from six different countries while giving Cebu-based players a rare opportunity to compete against established regional programs on home soil.

     

    Rather than simply hosting another basketball event, Cebu becomes a meeting point for rising local talent and experienced international competitors, all chasing a championship in a format that continues to gain popularity worldwide.

     

    “We thank Cebu for embracing our tournament. Ever since we started conceptualizing this event, we’ve had nothing but support from Cebu and it humbles us so much,” said tournament director Peachy Cheng-Medina.

     

    “Cebu is a basketball-crazy city so it’s just the right time for us to present women’s 3×3 basketball here in Cebu.”

     

    The local contingent will feature familiar names and emerging prospects eager to test themselves against international opposition.

     

    Among the hometown entries are Move Liloan and UP Cebu, two squads expected to draw strong local support throughout the weekend.

     

    Move Liloan will be led by Kath Jumapao alongside Kristel Pitogo, Lyssa Lubiano, and Sharlene Owatan, while UP Cebu fields a youthful lineup bannered by Althea Degamo, Maxim Magbanua, Jessha Banquil, and Lourien Navarro.

     

    For many Cebu basketball followers, the tournament offers a unique opportunity to measure local talent against some of the strongest women’s 3×3 programs in the region.

    “We finally have an international level 3×3 competition coming to town and I’m very excited as a Cebuano fan to see how our top talents compete against I can say the best teams in the region,” said SBP Zone 8 director Popoy Navarro.

     

    Beyond the competition itself, organizers hope the event serves as a showcase for women’s basketball and inspires the next generation of athletes.

     

    “This event is more than just a competition. It is a celebration of the talent, determination, and passion of our women athletes,” added Dr. Rhoel Dejano, Cebu Provincial Sports Commission chairman.

     

    The Philippine challenge will also include Gilas Pilipinas Women U23 3×3, Uratex Dream, Pilipinas Aguilas, and TOL Patriots.

     

    Awaiting them is a formidable international field led by Japanese clubs Maurice Lacroix and Shinjuku Givers 3×3, alongside Thailand’s Shoot It Dragons and CT Tigers, Malaysia’s EST Jersey, and Singapore’s Jumpshot.

     

    Pool play begins Saturday at 12 noon, with teams divided into four groups of three. The top performers will then advance to Sunday’s knockout rounds, where the inaugural Cebu Hustle champion will be crowned.

     

    For Cebu, the tournament represents more than a weekend of basketball. It is an opportunity to establish itself as a destination for high-level women’s 3×3 competition while giving local fans a front-row seat to the sport’s continued rise across Asia.

    The arrival of a national team-led international tournament in Cebu carries deeper meaning for the local basketball community, especially after several previous attempts to establish a women’s league in the region failed to gain traction.

     

    SBP Zone 8 director Popoy Navarro believes Cebu Hustle 3×3 could finally give women’s basketball the platform it has long needed.

     

    “Cebu Hustle 3×3 is such a breakthrough for women’s basketball for Cebu. After recent failed attempts to put up a women’s league, Cebu women’s basketball finally gets an avenue to showcase their talents and see what the best looks like,” said Navarro.

     

    “The talent level of the tournament is a level that I’m very happy to see and I’m excited for our women and our fans to be exposed to what I believe is the best women’s 3×3 tournament in the country.”

     

    Beyond the prestige, there is also plenty at stake competitively, with the champion set to receive USD 3,000, while the runner-up and third placer will earn USD 2,000 and USD 1,000, respectively.

     

    Backed by Uratex, Smart, and the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, the tournament not only gives Gilas Women another major stage — it also signals Cebu’s growing role in the future of Philippine women’s basketball.
