    La Salle extends dynasty to 16 straight seasons with Final Four berth

    The De La Salle University Lady Spikers are proving once again why they remain a powerhouse in Philippine collegiate volleyball. 


    After sweeping the UP Lady Maroons in three sets last Sunday, La Salle not only extended their winning streak to a flawless 10-0 but also punched their ticket to the Final Four of UAAP Season 88 Women’s Volleyball.

     

    This milestone adds another chapter to the Lady Spikers’ remarkable legacy under head coach Ramil de Jesus, who has guided the team to a 16-season postseason streak. 

     

    De Jesus first ignited the Final Four streak back in Season 71 in 2009, demonstrating a system capable of consistently molding championship-level talent for nearly two decades.

     

    Sustaining such dominance, however, requires more than just winning games. Each season brings the challenge of roster turnover, with graduating players leaving gaps that must be filled by rising talent. 

     

    “Every batch naman kasi, may mga mawawala. ‘Yun ‘yung dilemma ng mga coach eh sa college. Every four years, may nawawalang players, so may papasok tapos ite-train mo ulit,” de Jesus said.

    La Salle has managed to keep their dynasty intact through careful recruitment and player development. This season, the rookies are already making their mark, with Eshana Nunag seamlessly fitting into de Jesus’ system. 

     

    “Para sa’kin kasi, every year, nag-e-evolve ‘yung volleyball. Kailangan mong humabol sa kung anuman ‘yung meron kasi hindi pwedeng du’n ka lang at maiwan ka du’n,” the veteran coach added. 

     

    “Kung hindi ka hahabol sa ganung klaseng level, maiiwan ka. ‘Yun ang para sa’kin na kailangan lang talaga na kung ito lang ‘yung materials mo, ilabas mo ‘yung talent ng mga bata.”

     

    For de Jesus, maintaining a dynasty isn’t about standing still—it’s about evolving with the game and maximizing the talent at hand. With another batch of players, patience remains key as the Lady Spikers look to replicate their past successes, including the next three-peat from Seasons 78 to 80.

     

    Currently sitting atop the standings with a perfect 10-0 record, La Salle is eyeing a repeat of their undefeated campaigns from Seasons 67 and 68. Yet, the focus remains firmly on preparation and respect for their opponents. 

     

    “Pero kami, kung ano man yung dumating, basta sabi ko sa mga bata, maghanda lang tayo. Bigyan ng respeto yung bawat kalaban. Although nadaan natin nung first round ito, ‘yun—lahat sila mag-a-adjust, so dapat ready lang tayo,” de Jesus said.

     

    The Lady Spikers now turn their attention to facing the third-place FEU Lady Tamaraws on April 8 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena, hoping to extend their streak.

    The second round of UAAP Season 88 women’s volleyball is no longer about finding rhythm—it’s about survival, separation, and statement wins. This past weekend delivered exactly that, as contenders tightened their grip on Final Four spots while others officially bowed out of contention.


    Adamson University set the tone early, delivering a decisive sweep over University of the East and, in the process, slamming the door on UE’s playoff hopes.

     

    Frances Mordi powered the Lady Falcons with 18 points, backed by Shaina Nitura and Third Tuddao, whose combined efforts pushed Adamson to a 6-3 record—right in the thick of the playoff race.

     

    On the other side, UE’s struggles continued despite Khy Cepada’s 14-point effort. With a 0-10 record, the Lady Warriors now shift their focus to closing the season on a high note, starting with their Easter Sunday clash against UST.

     

    If Adamson’s win was about staying alive, National University’s performance was about reclaiming authority.

     

    The defending champions, NU bounced back emphatically against Ateneo, dismantling the Blue Eagles in straight sets. Arah Paniqui led the charge with 13 points, while rookie standout Sam Cantada added 10, steering NU to a 7-3 record and sole possession of second place.

    For Ateneo, the loss marked the end of their Final Four aspirations. Now at 1-9, the Blue Eagles are left to play spoilers, beginning with their upcoming matchup against UP.

     

    Sunday, however, belonged to dominance—and no team embodied that more than De La Salle University.

     

    The Lady Spikers extended their perfect run to 10-0 with a commanding win over UP. Team captain Shevana Laput led with 16 points, while Angel Canino and Amie Provido provided strong support. 

     

    More than just another victory, the win secured La Salle’s place in the Final Four and extended a historic streak—16 consecutive postseason appearances dating back to Season 71.

     

    UP, despite the loss, remains in the hunt. Sitting at 4-6, the Fighting Maroons still have a path forward, with key games ahead that could define their season.

     

    The weekend closed with perhaps the most telling result for the crowded middle of the standings.

    UST’s four-set victory over FEU didn’t just add another win—it reshaped the playoff race. Angge Poyos led with 18 points, supported by Regina Jurado and Jonna Perdido, as the Golden Tigresses strengthened their campaign for a Final Four return.

     

    Meanwhile, FEU now finds itself in a three-way tie with UST and Adamson at 6-4, turning the remaining schedule into a high-stakes sprint. Despite Faida Bakanke’s 13-point effort, FEU will need to regroup quickly as they face the daunting challenge of unbeaten La Salle next.

    Their confidence is anchored on Shaina Nitura, who erupted for 25 points in their previous win over Ateneo. She is expected to get steady support from Frances Mordi, who added 15 points, and Eloi Dote, who chipped in six.

     

    On the other side, UE is still searching for its first win of the season. Despite the struggles, Khy Cepada has been a bright spot, delivering 12 points in their last outing as the lone double-digit scorer.

    Saturday action at the Smart Araneta Coliseum set the tone, with the UST Golden Tigresses showing composure after dropping the opening set against the Ateneo Lady Eagles. What followed was a dominant response, as UST tightened its grip on the match to secure a four-set victory and extend its winning streak to three.

     

    The Tigresses leaned on the consistent firepower of MVP contender Angge Poyos and Reg Jurado, who combined for 20 points, while Jonna Perdido added 11 markers. Setter Cassie Carballo orchestrated the offense with precision, tallying 22 excellent sets along with two points of her own.

    Sunday’s matches shifted the spotlight to both dominance and redemption. The UP Fighting Maroons wasted no time asserting control, sweeping the still-winless UE Lady Warriors in straight sets to solidify their standing.

     

    But the day’s most compelling narrative belonged to the FEU Lady Tamaraws, who flipped the script against the defending champions, the NU Lady Bulldogs. After suffering a painful reverse sweep in their first-round meeting, FEU refused to let history repeat itself.

     

    In a tense five-set battle, the Lady Tamaraws held their ground and displayed collective resolve, outlasting NU in a dramatic extended fifth set. This time, it was FEU that showed composure under pressure, proving that lessons from past defeats can fuel defining victories.

     

    As the second round progresses, the weekend’s results highlight a shifting landscape—where streaks are built, redemption is earned, and every match carries greater weight in the race to the top.

    Momentum, redemption, and a few surprises defined the weekend in the UAAP Season 88 women’s volleyball tournament as teams battled to strengthen their positions before the end of the first round.


    De La Salle University continued to show why it remains the team to beat after overpowering the University of the East in straight sets to open Saturday’s double-header.

     

    The Lady Spikers looked even more complete with the return of team captain Shevana Laput, who missed the previous two matches due to illness. Her comeback immediately boosted the squad’s rhythm as La Salle secured a dominant 25-15, 25-20, 25-19 victory at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

     

    While Laput’s presence steadied the team, it was Angel Canino who once again carried much of the scoring load with 12 points. Lilay Del Castillo also provided crucial support, contributing 10 points to help La Salle maintain its flawless campaign.

     

    For UE, the search for its first win continues. The Lady Warriors fell to 0-6 in the standings and Khy Cepada led UE with 14 points, while Bea Zamudio added nine. Team captain Van Bangayan was limited to three markers.

     

    Saturday’s second match delivered the weekend’s biggest surprise as Adamson University stunned the University of Santo Tomas in emphatic fashion.

     

    The Lady Falcons swept the Growling Tigresses, 27-25, 25-22, 25-12, showcasing both composure and firepower in a match filled with momentum swings.

     

    Shai Nitura, Frances Mordi, Joy Aseo, Fhei Sagaysay, and Lhouiz Tuddao powered the Falcons early, building a commanding 20-6 advantage that eventually paved the way for a convincing one-hour, 21-minute victory.

    Mordi spearheaded Adamson’s offense with 20 points, while Marie Joy Aseo made an impressive first start of the season with six points.

     

    The loss pushed the Growling Tigresses to a 2-3 record. Regina Jurado led the team with 18 points, while Avril Bron chipped in 10. UST’s star hitter Angge Poyos, who had reached double figures in the team’s first four games, struggled offensively and was limited to five points on 5-of-24 attacks.

     

    Meanwhile, Sunday’s action began with National University asserting its dominance against Ateneo.

     

    The Lady Bulldogs cruised to a 25-18, 25-18, 25-15 win, collecting their second consecutive victory to improve to 5-1 in the standings — good for solo second place behind the unbeaten Lady Spikers.

     

    NU also welcomed the return of rookie Sam Cantada, who had missed the previous game due to a right shin injury. She contributed six points in her comeback outing.

     

    Vange Alinsug led the Lady Bulldogs with 18 points, while Arah Panique added 10 to keep NU firmly in the title conversation.

     

    Ateneo, meanwhile, remained winless at 0-6 and will try to salvage a win in its first-round finale against UE. Rookies Ana Hermosura and Dona de Leon paced the Blue Eagles with seven points each.

     

    Closing the weekend slate, Far Eastern University delivered a commanding performance against the University of the Philippines.

     

    The Lady Tamaraws secured a 25-13, 25-21, 25-16 triumph, sealing the victory after Lovely Lopez, Faida Bakanke, and Jazlyn Ellarina combined for four unanswered points late in the match. The contest lasted one hour and 22 minutes.

     

    With the win, FEU improved to 4-2, climbing to solo third place in the standings. UP, however, slipped to 3-2 and now shares fourth place with Adamson.

     

    The Fighting Maroons also faced adversity early in the match when transferee Casiey Dongallo suffered an apparent left-leg injury after an awkward landing in the first set.

     

    Despite the setback, UP continued to battle behind Joan Monares, who led the team with eight points. Kianne Olango and Niña Ytang chipped in six points each.

    The UAAP women’s volleyball tournament delivered more than just wins and losses over the weekend, it revealed separation at the top, resilience in the middle, and urgency at the bottom.

     

    UST Golden Tigresses wasted little time asserting control last Saturday after dismantling the UE Lady Warriors in straight sets, 25-11, 25-14, 25-14, at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion.

     

    It was a clinical display that reinforced UST’s growing rhythm this season. Angge Poyos and Jonna Perdido  chipped in with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Steering a balanced attack that never allowed UE to find its footing. 

     

    While, on the other end, Khy Cepada’s nine-point effort was not enough to lift the Lady Warriors, who slipped to 0-4 and remained anchored at the bottom of the standings.

     

    If Saturday’s opener was decisive, the second match was unforgettable. The UP Fighting Maroons staged one of the season’s most stirring reversals, erasing a two-set deficit to topple defending champions NU Lady Bulldogs, 16-25, 16-25, 25-22, 31-29, 18-16.

     

    Still reeling from a previous loss to DLSU Lady Archers, UP showed resolve when it mattered most. Nina Ytang, Casiey Dongallo, and Jelai Gajero fueled a comeback from 9-13 in the deciding set, saving three match points in a dramatic fifth-frame finish.

     

    NU’s bid to stay unbeaten was complicated by the absence of rookie standout Sam Cantada in the fourth and fifth sets after sustaining a minor lower-leg injury late in the third. Cantada had already delivered 10 points built on four aces, three attacks, and three blocks, alongside seven excellent digs.

     

    UP seized the opening, first dominating the third set before clawing back from a 21-24 deficit in the fourth, a shift that ultimately handed NU its first loss of the season.

    On Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, the DLSU Lady Spikers tightened their grip on first place with a four-set win over the Ateneo Lady Eagles, 25-14, 21-25, 25-15, 25-17.

     

    Even without ace Shevana Laput due to illness, DLSU absorbed its first dropped set of the season without losing control of the match. 

     

    Middle blocker Lilay del Castillo erupted for a career-best 18 points highlighted by eight blocks, while Angel Canino and Amie Provido poured in 21 and 17 markers, respectively.

     

    Ateneo, now 0-4, continued to search for a breakthrough despite strong outings from Anna Hermosura (18 points) and JLo Delos Santos (15).

     

    The weekend concluded with the FEU Lady Tamaraws restoring balance to their season by defeating the Adamson Lady Falcons, 22-25, 30-28, 25-17, 25-20.

     

    FEU’s win established a three-way tie with UST and Adamson at 2-2, compressing the middle of the standings and setting up a volatile race for positioning.

     

    Though Adamson narrowly edged FEU in spikes, 60-59, the Lady Tamaraws ruled the net with an advantage in blocks. Faida Bakanke led the charge with 22 points, including five rejections, while Jaz Ellarina added 11 markers.

     

    While Adamson leaned heavily on Nitrua, who produced 24 points and anchored the floor defense with 31 excellent receptions and 15 digs. But FEU’s defensive wall proved decisive, punctuated by Alyzza Devosora’s crosscourt kill that sealed the pivotal extended second set.

     

    By the end of the weekend, the UAAP landscape looked markedly different. DLSU stands alone at the top. NU has been reminded it is vulnerable. UP has reintroduced itself as a threat. UST continues to surge. FEU and Adamson are locked in the scramble. Meanwhile, UE and Ateneo are still searching for their first breakthrough.
