  • 2026 FIFA World Cup: France, Argentina lead star-studded slate

2026 FIFA World Cup: France, Argentina lead star-studded slate

The 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage continues with four highly anticipated matches featuring some of football’s biggest names. France and Argentina headline the day’s action as title contenders begin their campaigns, while Norway and Austria look to make strong statements with their star players leading the way.

With every point carrying weight from the opening match, teams will look to establish momentum and avoid early setbacks in their pursuit of the knockout rounds.

    France vs Senegal (Group I)

France begin their World Cup journey against Senegal in a matchup that brings together two nations with history, talent, and ambitions of making a deep run in the tournament.

Les Bleus enter the competition among the favorites, boasting one of the strongest squads in world football. Kylian Mbappe remains the centerpiece of France’s attack, with his pace, finishing, and ability to decide matches making him one of the biggest threats in the tournament. He will be supported by an exciting group of attackers including Ousmane Dembele, Michael Olise, and Desire Doue.

France’s depth across the pitch gives them confidence, but Senegal presents a difficult opening challenge. Senegal side has built a reputation for resilience and organization, with experienced leaders such as Sadio Mane, Kalidou Koulibaly, and goalkeeper Edouard Mendy expected to play key roles.

Senegal will look to remain compact defensively and use their speed in transition to test France’s backline. A strong result against one of the tournament favorites could immediately boost their confidence in the group stage.

    Iraq vs Norway (Group I)

Norway begin their World Cup campaign against Iraq with attention firmly on one player: Erling Haaland.

After establishing himself as one of the most dominant goalscorers in world football, Haaland finally gets the opportunity to showcase his abilities on the biggest international stage.

His physical presence, movement, and finishing ability make him Norway’s biggest weapon, while Arsenal midfielder Martin Odegaard provides creativity and leadership in the middle of the pitch. Norway will enter as favorites, but Iraq have proven to be a difficult opponent for stronger teams.

For Iraq, the formula will likely be patience, organization, and taking advantage of limited opportunities. A result against Norway would immediately put them in strong position in a competitive group.

    Argentina vs Algeria (Group J)

Defending champions Argentina return to the World Cup stage looking to continue their reign when they face Algeria.

The spotlight naturally remains on Lionel Messi, who continues to be the emotional leader of La Albiceleste. After guiding Argentina to World Cup glory in 2022, Messi enters another tournament looking to add another chapter to one of football’s greatest careers.

Argentina’s new generation has also strengthened the squad, with young talents combining with experienced players to maintain the team’s balance. Their ability to control possession and manage pressure makes them one of the most complete sides in the competition.

Algeria, however, will not arrive simply to participate. The Desert Foxes have a history of producing strong performances against top opposition and will rely on their technical quality and defensive discipline to challenge Argentina.

A positive result for Algeria would be considered a major statement, while Argentina will want a convincing opening performance to immediately establish themselves as serious title contenders.

    Austria vs Jordan (Group J)

Austria and Jordan close out the day with a matchup between two teams looking to prove they belong among the world’s best.

Austria enter the tournament with experienced leadership from David Alaba, whose versatility and composure remain vital to the team’s structure. With a disciplined approach and European experience throughout the squad, Austria will aim to control the tempo and create chances through organized attacking play.

Jordan, meanwhile, continue to rise as one of Asia’s improving football nations. Their recent growth has been built on teamwork, defensive discipline, and confidence against stronger opponents.

The Jordanians will likely look to frustrate Austria by staying compact and attacking through quick transitions. While Austria may hold the advantage in experience, Jordan’s hunger and determination could make this a challenging opener.

With France, Argentina, Norway, and Austria all featuring on Matchday 5, the day offers a mix of established superstars and ambitious challengers. Early results could shape the direction of each group, making every goal, save, and tactical decision crucial from the very beginning.

  • Mexico open World Cup campaign with 2-0 win over South Africa as South Korea rally past Czech Republic, 2-1 in Group A

Mexico open World Cup campaign with 2-0 win over South Africa as South Korea rally past Czech Republic, 2-1 in Group A

Mexico began their World Cup campaign with a confident 2-0 victory over South Africa at Estadio Azteca on Thursday, while South Korea also picked up three points after a 2-1 comeback win against Czechia in Group A action.

At the iconic Estadio Azteca, Julian Quinones gave the co-hosts an early lead in the ninth minute, finishing calmly after drilling a low shot through the legs of South Africa captain Ronwen Williams. The early goal set the tone for Mexico, who controlled possession and dictated the pace in front of a packed 80,824 crowd.

Raul Jimenez added a second goal for Mexico later in the match, ensuring a comfortable finish for the hosts as they secured all three points and an early advantage in the group standings.

South Africa struggled to cope with Mexico’s intensity and were further disrupted by disciplinary issues. Sphephelo Sithole was sent off in the 49th minute after denying Brian Gutierrez a clear goalscoring opportunity, leaving the visitors with 10 men before things worsened.

The match eventually turned into a disciplinary-heavy contest, with South Africa reduced further after Themba Zwane was also shown a red card. Mexico also ended the game with a sending-off, as Cesar Montes received a late dismissal in stoppage time. In total, the match produced three red cards, a rare occurrence in a World Cup opener.

Despite the chaos, Mexico maintained control throughout, ending South Africa’s hopes of spoiling the opening-day celebration and finally breaking their long-standing struggles in World Cup opening matches.

In the other Group A fixture, South Korea produced a 2-1 comeback win over Czechia to match Mexico’s opening-day result and join them on three points.

Czechia struck first in the 57th minute through Ladislav Krejci, who headed home from a long throw-in to give his side a surprise lead against the run of play. South Korea responded quickly, with Hwang In-Beom leveling the match just eight minutes later with a composed finish over the goalkeeper.

The turning point came in the 80th minute when substitute Oh Hyeon-gyu finished off a well-worked move, with Hwang turning provider to complete the comeback and secure all three points for South Korea.

Czechia thought they had regained the lead earlier when Tomas Soucek found the net from a free kick in the 77th minute, but the goal was ruled out for offside, denying them a crucial equalizer.

South Korea captain Son Heung-Min had several chances throughout the match but was unable to convert, though his side still managed to secure the win through collective attacking pressure.

After Matchday One, both Mexico and South Korea sit atop Group A with three points each, setting up a crucial early showdown between the two sides in their next fixture. Czechia and South Africa, meanwhile, will look to recover quickly as they aim to stay in contention for progression.

  • FIFA World Cup trophy takes center stage in New York

FIFA World Cup trophy takes center stage in New York

The FIFA World Cup trophy made a stop in New York on Tuesday as part of the Coca-Cola FIFA World Cup 2026 Trophy Tour, giving fans a chance to see football’s biggest prize up close ahead of next year’s tournament.

Germany World Cup winner Bastian Schweinsteiger joined New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani at the American Museum of Natural History for the unveiling.

One of the few people allowed to lift the trophy, Schweinsteiger held and kissed the prize he won when Germany defeated Argentina in the 2014 World Cup final.

The former Bayern Munich, Manchester United and Chicago Fire midfielder said seeing the trophy again gave him “goosebumps” and highlighted how difficult it is to win football’s biggest honor.

He also believes the tour can inspire young players by allowing them to see the trophy in person.

“Let’s go Germany,” Schweinsteiger said as he lifted the trophy.

The event also underscored New York’s role in the 2026 World Cup, with the New York/New Jersey area set to host eight matches, including the final, from June 13 to July 19.

Coca-Cola says the tour is intended to bring fans closer to the World Cup experience.

Daria Makhoukova, general manager for FIFA World Cup 2026 Coca-Cola Company’s North America Operating Unit, said the initiative is designed to connect supporters with the event well before kickoff.

“The Trophy Tour gave us a chance to showcase the sport’s truly iconic symbol to a wide range of people, from hardcore fans to those who are completely new to the game,” she said. “Many people in the U.S. will be experiencing their first World Cup.”

At the same time, the trophy tour arrives amid growing scrutiny of FIFA’s partnership with Coca-Cola.

A coalition of global health experts and advocates has renewed calls for FIFA to end the sponsorship by 2030 through the Kick Big Soda Out campaign, which first targeted the governing body during the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in the United States.

The debate has gained attention because co-hosts Canada and Mexico have introduced front-of-package warning labels on products high in sugar, salt and fat.

While Mexico and the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador have implemented taxes on sweetened beverages as part of broader public health efforts.

  • FIFA World Cup 2026 set to deliver full 104 match streaming access for Filipino fans

FIFA World Cup 2026 set to deliver full 104 match streaming access for Filipino fans

Filipino football fans are set for one of the most accessible World Cup viewing experiences yet, as the FIFA World Cup 2026 prepares to roll out across Canada, Mexico, and the United States starting June 12.

Through a new partnership involving Tap DMV, Aleph, and BlastTV, the tournament is being positioned not just as a global event, but as a fully digital experience tailored for audiences in the Philippines.

At the center of the collaboration is Aleph’s media rights distribution strategy, which brings all 104 matches of the expanded 48-team tournament to Filipino viewers via WCTV by Aleph Arena on BlastTV.

Instead of relying on traditional broadcast windows, the model focuses on an “all-access pass” approach, allowing fans to stream every match live and on-demand across multiple devices.

The strategy reflects a broader shift in how major sporting events are consumed, with Aleph rolling out a multichannel ecosystem that blends OTT streaming, social media content through Aleph Arena, and screenings in partner venues nationwide.

The goal is to follow the modern fan rather than force them into a single viewing platform, turning the World Cup into a constantly accessible digital experience.

“Football has officially moved from the sidelines to the center of the Philippine sports conversation. We are seeing a fundamental shift in fan culture, where digital content creation has become a primary way for fans to live and share the sport in real-time. For brands in the Philippines, this is a massive opportunity to connect with an audience that is more mobile, more expressive, and more invested in the game than ever before.” said Anna Dy, Aleph Country Head for the Philippines.

OKBET is Asia’s most trusted and popular online sports gaming platform. Visit us on OKBET to stay up to date with all sports news from around the world.

The expanded 48-team format adds another layer of anticipation, with 104 matches expected to deliver longer storylines, surprise results, and a heavier focus on underdog narratives than previous editions.

For Filipino audiences, the scale of coverage means the tournament will no longer be confined to highlights or late-night broadcasts but will instead be available in full, in real time.

Adding to the build-up, Tap DMV and BlastTV have also explored fan engagement initiatives such as early access promotions and cross-sport content integration, drawing from a wider portfolio that includes ATP, WTA, NFL, NHL, LPGA Tour, and Studio Universal programming.

The approach signals a move toward making football part of a year-round sports entertainment ecosystem rather than a standalone event.

“The FIFA World Cup 2026 is the pinnacle of sporting excellence, and we’re excited to help bring this historic tournament closer to Filipino fans,” said Celinda de Guia, president and CEO of Tap DMV. “With BlastTV, we’re tapping into a platform that reflects the digital-first habits of today’s audience, making it easier than ever for Filipinos to experience every moment of the world’s biggest sporting event.”
