Francis Ceccarelli promises to keep training and competing after making Winter Olympics debut

Francis Ceccarelli etched his name into Philippine sports history by becoming the first Filipino to secure a quota spot in alpine skiing for the 2026 Winter Olympics. For a tropical nation with little winter sports tradition, this achievement alone was a monumental breakthrough.

But on the slopes of Milano Cortina, the 22-year-old Filipino-Italian’s Olympic debut ended in heartbreak.

Ceccarelli was unable to complete the Men’s Slalom event, registering a DNF (Did Not Finish) after crashing out of the course. He was among 52 alpine skiers who failed to finish the technically demanding race — a stark reminder of the razor-thin margins and unforgiving nature of the discipline. Even elite competitors struggled, including Giant Slalom gold medalist Lucas Pinheiro Braathen, who also did not complete the run.

Slalom, widely regarded as one of the most technical events in alpine skiing, demands rapid-fire turns, precise edge control, and split-second timing. One slight miscalculation can end an athlete’s Olympic campaign — and for Ceccarelli, that harsh reality unfolded on winter sports’ biggest stage.

Despite the setback, Ceccarelli took pride in competing against the world’s best and saw the experience as an invaluable stepping stone for his future.

“For me, this experience is 9 to 10 because, yeah, the sensation is good, the feel is good, only the weather was really difficult. It’s okay. The next time we can make it to the top 50 in the world,” Ceccarelli said in a media interaction.

“This experience is like a beautiful moment, because you start, to compete with a big athlete, like top in the world. I mean, every athlete wants to participate in the Olympic Games. And it was my first time. And I’m so really happy and so really proud for my works and for my races. And such a beautiful experience,” he added.

Showing remarkable resilience, Ceccarelli returned to training even before the closing ceremony, motivated to build on what he learned in Milano Cortina.

“I want to continue competing because we are young. Yeah I will keep training, training, and joining races. I mean, this is work. We continue,” he said.

The qualification of Ceccarelli, along with Tallulah Proulx, represents a major step forward for Philippine winter sports. The young athlete hopes his participation will inspire the next generation of Filipino athletes to pursue their dreams, no matter how unconventional the path.

“I mean, for the next generation of Filipinos, I want to tell them, always believe in your dreams and really never give up because it’s important. You work really, really hard to be in the moment.

“I know it’s really difficult and it’s really stressful, but if you really want to reach your dreams, you know it’s real, push it, push it. And so really never give up because one day, the big events, it’s really make it to fun one day in the future,” he concluded.

While Ceccarelli did not finish on the scoreboard, his historic appearance marks a turning point for Philippine winter sports — proof that with determination and perseverance, even athletes from tropical nations can compete on the world stage.

Slalom, widely regarded as one of the most technical events in alpine skiing, requires rapid-fire turns, precise edge control, and split-second timing. One slight miscalculation can spell the end of an athlete’s Olympic campaign — and for Ceccarelli, that harsh reality unfolded on sport’s biggest winter stage.

The young skier did not hide his disappointment following the race, acknowledging that he had hoped to maximize the rare opportunity of competing at the Olympics.

“We started so good. This sport is not very easy. Slalom discipline is so really difficult. I hope next time, after I work hard, I can improve in the next race,” Ceccarelli said in a media interaction.

While the result did not reflect his preparation and effort, Ceccarelli’s Olympic qualification remains a watershed moment for Philippine winter sports. Securing a quota slot required consistent performances in international competitions sanctioned by the International Ski Federation, a testament to his dedication and steady climb through the global rankings.

For the Philippines — a country more associated with basketball courts and tropical beaches than snow-covered mountains — Ceccarelli’s participation symbolized expanding horizons. His journey to Milano Cortina showcased the growing reach of Filipino athletes across non-traditional sports.

Despite the disappointment of a DNF, Ceccarelli chose to focus on the larger picture: the pride of carrying the Philippine flag in the Winter Games.

“Representing the Philippines at the Winter Olympics for the first time is an honor for my people, Pinoys, my family, and for the membership. I’m still really happy,” he added.

His words reflected both humility and perspective — a recognition that making history sometimes outweighs the result sheet.

Though his Olympic campaign ended sooner than hoped, Ceccarelli’s breakthrough has laid the foundation for future Filipino winter athletes. His appearance alone proves that representation in snow and ice sports is possible, and that the Philippine tricolor can be seen on even the coldest stages in the world.

For now, the lesson is clear: in a sport as unforgiving as slalom, one run does not define a career. And for Francis Ceccarelli, history has already been written — with more chapters still to come.

  • Tallulah Proulx fulfills childhood dream after becoming youngest Filipino to qualify for Winter Olympics

Tallulah Proulx fulfills childhood dream after becoming youngest Filipino to qualify for Winter Olympics

Francis Ceccarelli has carved out a historic milestone for Philippine sports after becoming the first Filipino to secure a quota spot for the Olympic Winter Games. The 22-year-old alpine skier is set to represent the country on the sport’s grandest stage when the Winter Olympics begin on February 26, with the Games jointly hosted by Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy.

Ceccarelli will not be the only Filipino making waves in the snow.

Another Philippine alpine skier, Tallulah Proulx, also made history after becoming the first Filipina — and the youngest Filipino athlete — to qualify for the Winter Olympics. Just 17 years old, Proulx earned qualification in both the giant slalom and slalom events, turning a personal dream into a landmark moment for the country’s growing presence in winter sports.

Proulx admitted the achievement still feels surreal, describing the emotions she felt when she found out she had officially booked her ticket to the Olympics.

“I was really, really happy, of course. And honestly, just so excited after I found out. I was so grateful,” Proulx said during a media interaction. “I would have been happy regardless, but I was especially happy on the drive home.”

Beyond the excitement, the teenage skier said she hopes her breakthrough can spark belief among young Filipinos — especially young girls — that they too can chase big dreams in sports outside the country’s traditional comfort zone.

“I’m just really happy and I hope I can be a role model to like other young Filipina girls and Filipinas in general,” she added. “I’m still in shock… every day I check my phone and I get new followers or new mentions and I’m like, whoa, did I really do that?”

Proulx’s journey began early. She first tried skiing at just three years old during a family vacation in Tahoe, California. What started as a childhood experience quickly became a passion, and by the time she was seven, she was already competing. Eventually, she made the decision to represent the Philippines internationally, embracing the chance to carry the flag on a global stage.

Her continued rise was fueled by international experience, including her stint at the 2025 Asian Winter Games in Harbin, China, where she finished 16th out of 44 competitors. For Proulx, that tournament became more than just another event—it became preparation for what she hopes will be an even bigger moment in Italy.

“I think it helped prepare me also for the Olympics because it kind of simulated the Olympic village and I was able to meet a lot of athletes,” she explained. “I was able to get some exposure as to what the Olympics would be like.”

The experience also sharpened her motivation.

“And I think that also fueled my motivation… I was like, if I want this dream to come true, like I really have to put in the work,” she added. “I truly think that I was able to put my best foot forward and really, really push myself.”

That work continues daily, as Proulx stays active in races while following a demanding training routine leading up to the Olympics.

“I usually train around six days a week,” she shared. “I train with my home mountain at Park City in Utah. And we train at the Utah Olympic Park, which is essentially like a kind of private hill or a training slope just for racers.”

Proulx also emphasized that competition remains essential not only for improvement, but also for enjoyment and team bonding.

“Every race is always an opportunity to get better points,” she said. “And honestly, it’s also fun to be with my team… supporting my teammates as well is always fun.”

Alongside Ceccarelli, Proulx believes their qualification can help shine a brighter spotlight on skiing and winter sports in a country where basketball dominates the landscape.

“I hope that like both of us being there will be an inspiration for other Filipinos,” she said. “Because if there’s two, we could grow it even more, you know.”

She also highlighted the significance of Filipino athletes abroad — like herself in the United States and Ceccarelli in Italy — helping extend the reach of Philippine sports beyond its usual borders.

“Getting out there… and also to Filipinos abroad… spreading or having Filipinos that have like spread out to other countries, let them try skiing and other alpine sports or other winter sports as well,” she concluded.

With Francis Ceccarelli and Tallulah Proulx both set to compete in Milan-Cortina, the Philippines is entering a new chapter in its sporting story — one that goes beyond hardwood courts and into the mountains. Their qualification is not only a personal triumph, but a breakthrough moment that could inspire a new generation of Filipino athletes to explore winter sports and dream bigger on the world stage.

Francis Ceccarelli is gearing up for the Winter Olympic Games after becoming the first Filipino to qualify for the competition

Francis Ceccarelli etched his name in Philippine sports history by becoming the first Filipino to secure a quota spot for the Olympic Winter Games. The 22-year-old alpine skier will compete in the event scheduled to be held on February 26, jointly hosted by Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo in Italy.

Born in Quezon City, Philippines, Ceccarelli was adopted by an Italian couple at the age of eight and moved to Italy after his adoption. Despite living and training in Italy, Ceccarelli chose to represent the Philippines on the international stage, a decision he has upheld since 2023. With his qualification, he becomes the fifth Olympic alpine skier in the country’s history.

“Since I started skiing, my Filipino identity has always been with me. It represents where I was born and where I’m from. It was a goal for me to ski for the Philippines, because it is not every day that we have a Filipino athlete skiing at the international level,” Ceccarelli shared in a media interaction.

Residing in Abetone, a small town in Tuscany’s Pistoia province, Ceccarelli was introduced to skiing through his family. His mother, a skier herself, was his first coach and biggest influence.

“I choose skiing because my mom’s family are skiers and because in Abetone, the principal sport is skiing. The first one who encouraged me to ski was my mom at ski camp. After that, I thought that skiing was really fun and with the passage of time, I decided to do skiing. I had many coaches, the first coach was my mom and now, my coach is Stefano,” he explained.

Ceccarelli’s journey to the Olympics has been marked by dedication, consistency, and international competition.

“I’m feeling good, and really proud of myself and for the people who support me. I’m really excited and ready for this Olympics season. I qualified for the Winter Olympics because I made many races and trainings before. Also because I started skiing before I knew the Italian language. I think the secret for all this is constancy and continuity.

“So I participated in many races internationally, like FIS (International Ski and Snowboard Federation). I made good results in FIS races in slalom discipline. I had the Asian Winter Games. I had a great opportunity to be on the podium but when you want to go further, it happens that you make mistakes,” Ceccarelli added.

With the Winter Olympics just around the corner, all eyes will be on Ceccarelli as he makes his maiden appearance on the world’s biggest stage for winter sports. Filipino fans will be eager to see if he can continue the country’s tradition of producing young athletes who shine internationally, this time on snow and ice.
