    Elizabeth Means showed her toughness, but even her determination could not prevent Gilas Pilipinas Women from running into a difficult finish at the 2026 FIBA 3×3 Women’s Series–Jinan Stop.


    Playing through a painful right shoulder injury, Means tried to keep the Philippines alive after suffering the setback during a collision in the qualifying draw. 


    Her effort highlighted the team’s resilience, but the injury eventually became a major obstacle as Gilas faced two formidable French squads in the group stage on Saturday at Jinan Cunac Mall in China.


    The Philippines found itself in a high-pressure matchup against fellow Filipino side Manila Gilas after both teams secured victories over Vietnam in their respective qualifying games. 


    With elimination on the line, Gilas appeared ready to move forward after building a 15-11 advantage with just 1:24 remaining.


    However, the momentum shifted when Means attempted to navigate through a screen set by Tin Cayabyab. The contact resulted in a shoulder injury, forcing Gilas to finish the contest with their import playing through discomfort.


    Despite the setback, Gilas Women held their ground and completed a 19-14 victory. Mikka Cacho carried the scoring load with six points, while Camille Clarin and Tantoy Ferrer contributed five points each. Means still managed to add four points despite the injury.

    For Manila Gilas, Ann Pingol and Cayabyab paced the team with five points apiece, while Sam Harada and Kaye Pingol chipped in two points each.

The Filipinas suffered a 21-14 defeat, with Yohana Ewodo leading the French attack with 11 points and four rebounds. Samantha Peytour added eight points, while Clarin and Cacho combined for 11 points for the Philippines.


    The Jinan campaign ended with lessons for a Gilas squad that continues to gain international experience in the fast-paced 3×3 format. The FIBA 3×3 Women’s Series remains one of the premier global competitions for women’s 3×3 basketball, featuring national teams, clubs, and elite players competing across multiple international stops.


    Despite the setback in China, Gilas Women will have little time to regroup as the team heads to the next stop in Batam, Indonesia, scheduled for July 23 to 24. The Batam leg is part of the expanded 2026 Women’s Series calendar, which includes 25 events across Asia, Europe, and other regions before the season finale in Shanghai.


    For Gilas Women, the upcoming stop offers another opportunity to test their growth against some of the world’s best 3×3 programs and build momentum heading deeper into the international season.

    Manila Gilas delivered the country’s strongest showing yet on the international 3×3 stage after finishing fourth in the FIBA 3×3 Women’s Series Xiantao Stop in China, marking a significant breakthrough for Philippine women’s basketball.

     

    The Filipinas exceeded expectations by reaching the semifinals, improving on the previous best finish by a Philippine team—a fifth-place result posted by Gilas Women during the Wuhan Stop in 2024.

     

    Their milestone campaign was built on resilience, beginning with a statement quarterfinal victory over Paraguay.

     

    After suffering a 16-10 loss to the South Americans during pool play, Manila returned with a far more composed performance when everything was on the line.

     

    Tin Cayabyab spearheaded the revenge mission, exploding for 13 points behind four shots from beyond the arc as Manila edged Paraguay, 20-17.

     

    The knockout contest remained tightly contested until the closing moments.

     

    Locked at 16-all, Sam Harada buried a clutch two-pointer with just 34 seconds remaining to swing the momentum in Manila’s favor.

     

    Although Paloma Niz answered to cut the lead to one, Cayabyab calmly knocked down two free throws to seal the Philippines’ historic semifinal berth.

    Meanwhile, Gilas Women’s campaign ended in the quarterfinals after running into eventual champion Ulaanbaatar, which claimed a convincing 21-10 victory.

     

    Mikka Cacho led the Philippine side with four points, while Camille Clarin, Elizabeth Means, and Tantoy Ferrer contributed two markers apiece.

     

    Ulaanbaatar leaned on a balanced attack led by Thao My Truong with seven points, Amari Robinson with six, and Khulan Onolbaatar with five as it completed its title-winning run.

     

    While Gilas Women exited earlier than hoped, Manila Gilas ensured the Philippines left Xiantao with a new benchmark—one that reflects the steady rise of the country’s presence in the global 3×3 basketball scene.

    Elizabeth Means nears Gilas dream as naturalization process enters final stretch

    For Elizabeth Means, every game she plays in the Philippines now feels like a preview of something bigger.

     

    The Cebu Hustle 3×3 tournament may be another stop in her basketball journey, but for Means, the event also serves as a reminder that her long-awaited opportunity to officially represent the country is finally within reach.

     

    After years of paperwork and waiting, the Filipino-American forward revealed that her naturalization process is nearing completion, placing her one step closer to wearing the Philippine colors in international competition.

     

    The process took another significant leap forward in March when the Philippine Senate approved on third and final reading the bills granting citizenship to Means and former University of the Philippines standout Malick Diouf. Both are expected to strengthen the country’s growing 3×3 basketball program.

     

    Now, the finish line is in sight.

     

    “Oh my gosh, it has been a process, and I’m so excited,” said Means, whose Filipino roots trace back to Naga City in Camarines Sur.

     

    “We’re almost there. I’m just waiting on my passport, but we’re in the last steps, and I cannot wait to have it, finalize it.”

     

    That anticipation has added extra meaning to every appearance she makes on local courts.

     

    This weekend, Means is competing in the inaugural Cebu Hustle 3×3 tournament alongside Camille Clarin, Camille Malagar, and Trina Guytingco under the Pilipinas Aguilas banner. The team opened its campaign strongly, sweeping its two pool-stage games to secure a spot in the knockout rounds.

    “I think 3×3 tournaments are all about growing and getting better every game, and kinda warming up throughout the tournament, and I think we did that in each game,” said Means.

    Potential opportunities in the FIBA Women’s Series, the Asian Games, and other international competitions are now becoming increasingly realistic. For a player who has long hoped to compete for the country connected to her family roots, that possibility is becoming more tangible with each passing day.

     

    Before she can officially step onto the international stage as a Filipina athlete, however, there is still business to take care of in Cebu.

     

    And for Means, every game remains another chance to prepare for the moment she has been waiting for all along.

    The margin for error has quickly disappeared for Gilas Pilipinas Women at the 2026 FIBA 3×3 World Cup.

     

    After earning their place in Warsaw through a breakthrough Asia Cup campaign last year, the Filipinas arrived on the world stage hoping to prove they belonged among the sport’s elite. Instead, they now find themselves staring at a must-win situation after dropping both of their opening assignments on Day 1.

     

    Gilas suffered a 14-11 loss to World No. 15 Latvia before running into a powerhouse German squad that handed them a 22-10 defeat on Monday evening (Manila time) at the Palace of Culture and Science in Poland.

     

    The twin setbacks dropped the Philippines to the bottom of Pool C and significantly raised the stakes heading into the final two group-stage games.

     

    While the results were disappointing, the opening loss against Latvia offered a glimpse of the fight that helped Gilas reach the World Cup in the first place.

     

    The Filipinas stayed within striking distance for most of the contest and trailed by only two points midway through the game. Latvia eventually created breathing room after a crucial two-pointer from Paula Cirsa pushed the lead to 12-6 with just over two minutes remaining.

     

    Rather than fold, Gilas mounted one final push.

     

    Kacey Dela Rosa answered with consecutive baskets before Camille Clarin knocked down a two-pointer with 22 seconds left to trim the deficit to just three.

     

    But Latvia managed to deliver the final blow through Marta Miščenko, who sealed the victory and denied the Filipinas a dramatic comeback.

     

    Dela Rosa paced Gilas with five points and three rebounds, while Mikka Cacho and Clarin chipped in three and two points, respectively.

    If Latvia tested the Philippines’ resilience, Germany exposed the gap between a rising program and one of the world’s established contenders.

    Beyond the prestige, there is also plenty at stake competitively, with the champion set to receive USD 3,000, while the runner-up and third placer will earn USD 2,000 and USD 1,000, respectively.

    Momentum builds through stops, grit, and timely buckets. That was exactly the story for the Gilas Pilipinas women’s 3×3 team, who transformed a shaky opening into a commanding 21-15 victory over Kyrgyzstan to complete a clean sweep of Group C at the 6th Asian Beach Games in Sanya.


    The Filipinas found themselves on the back foot early, as defensive miscues allowed Kyrgyzstan to dictate the pace. But instead of unraveling, the team leaned on experience. 

     

    Mikka Cacho and Tantoy Ferrer anchored the turnaround, chipping away at the deficit possession by possession. By the time Gabi Bade and Kaye Pingol found their rhythm late in the game, the tide had fully shifted.

     

    “Defense. Defense is going to be the key to helping us win all of these games. We just had to stay focused on defense, because our shots will come if we focus on defense. You know, we can’t underestimate any team. Every team is good. So we just have to come out and battle each game,” Bade said.

     

    Balanced scoring told the story of a team effort wherein Ferrer led the Philippine squad with eight points, Cacho followed with seven, Bade added five, and Pingol chipped in one crucial contribution. 

     

    More importantly, the win secured their place in the quarterfinals, where they now await the survivor of the Kazakhstan-Macao play-in clash.

    While the women thrived on a perfect run, the Gilas men’s 3×3 team carved out a more complicated path to the same destination. 

     

    A 14-21 loss to Iran could have derailed their campaign, but earlier results proved enough to keep them on top of Pool A. Locked in a three-way tie with Iran and China, the Filipinos advanced as the No. 1 seed based on total points scored.

     

    Jeff Manday paced the men with eight points in their final outing, while Nic Cabañero added six—numbers that helped preserve their slim edge in the standings.

     

    “We accomplished our goal to top our pool. To be honest, the boys deserved to be here. They worked hard, and this is a blessing for us because of the hard work we put in from day one. I think this is big preparation for us going into the quarterfinals tomorrow,” Coach Patrick Fran said.

     

    For now, the spotlight belongs to the 3×3 squads—especially the women, whose defensive resolve turned early vulnerability into a defining statement. With the knockout stage looming, that identity may prove to be their strongest weapon yet.
