    The towering 7-foot former Barangay Ginebra slotman, whose PBA future remains in limbo, is set to make waves in Australia as he dons the Zamboanga Valientes jersey for the upcoming Asia Pacific Basketball Tournament in Melbourne.

     

    Slaughter, along with his Valientes teammates, took off for Melbourne on Tuesday morning ahead of the three-day pocket tournament, slated to tip off on April 3 at Waverley Basketball Stadium.

     

    The Valientes are representing the Philippines in the Premiere Division, joining a 12-team field that includes high-level competition from NBL-Australia squads such as the BSBL  Guardians (Brisbane), BTO MBL All Stars, and Black Rhinos. Meanwhile, Division 1 sees another Philippine squad, We Are CSAS Pilipinas, competing in their own bracket.

     

     

    The move comes amid speculation about Slaughter’s PBA prospects. Insider reached out to Slaughter for comment, but the former Ginebra big man remained tight-lipped on both his potential PBA return and his stint with the Valientes.

    Valientes owner Junnie Navarro clarified that signing Slaughter, who is technically a free agent, was a straightforward decision following their Dubai tournament.

     

    “I called him if he already has a contract in the PBA or somewhere else, sabi n’ya wala. So good, we signed him up to reinforce our squad,” said Navarro, who also serves as a Zamboanga City councilor.

    Navarro emphasized that the Valientes had no role in the ongoing discussions between Slaughter and PBA newcomer Titan Ultra.

     

    “Yun ang sinabi n’ya, wala pa sila contract so since free siya I asked him if he can join us. He said yes. Parang continuity lang to ng usapan naming from Dubai,” Navarro added.

     

    Insider sources revealed that Slaughter’s potential move to Titan Ultra has been delayed due to administrative hurdles, including the team needing clearance from the PBA and its board regarding his status. In fact, Titan Ultra management was reportedly summoned to the PBA offices to address the matter.

    “Ilang tao ko na ang tumatawag sa kanya, pero hindi nya kami sinasagot. He was vague with his responses. Our tender offer is ready, the PBA is waiting. Pero I don’t know what happened,” Tiu revealed.

     

    Despite the communication challenges, Tiu emphasized that contract terms have not been an issue. Through Slaughter’s advisors, the Risers had agreed to a maximum pay of P420,000 per month. The team has also indicated willingness to exceed that amount if necessary, contingent on seeing Slaughter’s fitness level before finalizing any deal.

    “Wala naman na kaming problema sa contract and amount kasi through his advisors, we agreed to a maximum pay of P420,000 per month,” Tiu said. “Nagkasundo na kami. We already talked about it, we already talked to the PBA regarding his status, the PBA said walang silent ban, so silently we have been working to get him to sign with us. Pero up to now, more than a month after, ghosted kami.”

     

    Tiu further explained that the franchise had even offered flexible terms, such as a short-term contract or a renegotiation clause, to accommodate Slaughter’s return. “We didn’t give him more than P420,000 yet kasi gusto muna namin siya makitang maglaro. Like I told them, willing naman kami to give a short-term contract or a renegotiation clause, para he can be secured with us. We gave him those leeways, kaso bigla na lang nawala parang bula,” he added.

     

    Despite the uncertainty, the Risers remain eager to bring Slaughter back into the PBA fold. Calantoc sees the 37-year-old as a critical piece to not only anchor the team’s frontcourt but also provide mentorship to younger players, enhancing both on-court performance and locker-room leadership.

     

    “Hindi naman kailangang umabot na kami mismo magpapa-ban sa kanya. So totoo lang, napahiya kami sa PBA at sa fans. Kaso andyan na eh. I am just hoping he contacts us soon, let us know if may iba na ba siya team na lalaruin. Is he in the MPBL? In some other leagues?” Tiu said.

     

    The Risers’ message to Slaughter is simple: the door remains open, but the team hopes for clear communication. “Ang sa amin lang, let’s finish this negotiation. If ayaw n’ya sa ino-offer namin, so be it. If gusto n’ya, then we can meet for signing. Yun lang naman hinihiling namin. We need him, but he also needs us if he wants to really return to the PBA,” Tiu concluded.

    For Slaughter, the priority is clear, “The first order of business for Greg here is to return to the PBA and re-introduce himself to the fans while at the same time, show his value as a rare 7-0 center,” the source said.

     

    “Greg, in consultation with his wife and advisers, has agreed to receive an amount slightly lower from what he was offered at Northport three years ago,” said a source close to the negotiations.

    “Kasi ang illogical naman ng Titan Ultra kung may chance ka to get a 7-footer tapos hindi mo gagawin. Eh yan ang wala sa PBA ngayon. Local na big man na pwede mong itapat kay June Mar (Fajardo),” she added.

     

    Titan Ultra’s interest in Slaughter has been unwavering since meeting him on the first day of team practice last February 3.

    “I haven’t heard anything. I don’t know. Hopefully, it works. I hope so,” Slaughter concluded.
