    Titan Ultra reworks Joshua Munzon trade as TNT remains in pursuit 

    Titan Ultra has pulled the plug on the initial framework of its transaction with TNT, opening the door for a new set of negotiations as the Tropang 5G continue to pursue Joshua Munzon.

    The Giant Risers were initially prepared to send Munzon to TNT in exchange for the Tropang 5G’s Season 53 first-round pick and rookie big man Joe Celzo. 

     

    The deal had been nearing completion and was only waiting for approval from the PBA Commissioner’s Office before unforeseen circumstances forced a rethink.

    Now, Titan Ultra is looking for more pieces from TNT. The change comes at a difficult time for the Giant Risers, who will be without Sajonia for the remainder of the 2026 PBA Governors’ Cup and the early portion of Season 51. 

     

    With the team needing to fill the void, Titan Ultra is reportedly exploring a stronger package before giving the green light on Munzon.

     

    The uncertainty surrounding the trade also explained Munzon’s no playing time on Wednesday.

     

    He did not suit up for Titan Ultra in its 143-113 blowout loss to San Miguel at the Ynares Center, an indication that the 15-point-per-game scorer is already at the center of a potential roster shake-up.

     

    Munzon has been a major contributor for the Giant Risers this conference, averaging 15.0 points, 4.75 rebounds and 1.25 steals through eight games.

     

    The proposed deal has already gone through at least one major revision. An earlier version that TNT ultimately rejected would have sent Rey Nambatac and Poy Erram to Titan Ultra in exchange for Munzon and Jeo Ambohot.

     

    With that package off the table, both sides are expected to continue talking over the next several months.

    TNT’s interest, however, has not changed. The Tropang 5G remain determined to acquire Munzon, whose combination of scoring and perimeter defense makes him an attractive addition to a TNT roster looking to strengthen its rotation.

     

    The timing could also be significant for TNT as it battles for position in Group A. The Tropang 5G currently sit third at 4-4, tied with Converge, while Titan Ultra is at the bottom of the group with a 2-7 record. 

     

    For Titan Ultra, the situation presents an opportunity to maximize the return for one of its most valuable players.

     

    The Giant Risers are reportedly willing to listen to offers for everyone on the roster except their first-round pick and three second-round selections in the upcoming PBA Season 51 Draft. That gives the franchise considerable flexibility as it weighs both immediate needs and its longer-term rebuilding plans.

     

    Munzon’s value is also rooted in what he has already shown in the PBA. He broke out with NorthPort last season as one of the league’s emerging two-way talents, earning PBA Most Improved Player honors while also being selected to the All-Defensive Team.

     

    That development has made him more than just another trade piece.

     

    For TNT, he represents a proven young player who can contribute on both ends of the floor. For Titan Ultra, he is a valuable asset that could bring back the pieces needed to navigate a depleted roster.

    Titan Ultra finally found a reason to celebrate in the PBA Season 50 Governor’s Cup, ending a frustrating stretch with a convincing 103-87 triumph over defending champions TNT Tropang 5G on Wednesday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.

     

    The breakthrough victory did more than place the Giant Risers in the win column. It halted a 10-game losing streak that dated back to the previous conference and the win also improved the team’s record to 1-3, good for fifth place in Group A.

     

    While the result was significant for the franchise, the spotlight naturally shifted to Joshua Munzon, whose name had repeatedly surfaced in trade discussions involving TNT during the offseason. 

     

    Rather than letting the speculation become a distraction, the veteran winger showed that his attention remains solely on helping his current team succeed.

     

    “It’s just another basketball game. At the end of the day, I get paid to play basketball. Just another game, being professional and just going out there and handling business,” Munzon said.

     

    Facing the very team that had been heavily linked to him only added intrigue to the matchup. Reports before the conference claimed Munzon was headed to TNT in a deal that would have sent Rey Nambatac the other way after the Tropang 5G’s runner-up finish in the previous conference.

    The proposed move, however, reportedly fell apart after TNT declined the Titan Ultra’s request to include big man Henry Galinato in the package. With no agreement reached, Munzon’s existing contract was automatically extended through the end of the season, a development later announced by his agent, Danny Espiritu.

     

    “The business side is not my job. Just the basketball side, so I just got to take care of the basketball side,” he said.

     

    His performance reflected that mindset. Munzon finished with 13 points and three rebounds, providing steady production as the Giant Risers controlled the defending champions from start to finish.

     

    The biggest offensive spark came from import Tirrell Brown, who powered the victory with 29 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists. Bryan Sajonia and Jerrick Balanza also chipped in 13 points each, giving the Giant Risers balanced scoring in one of their most complete performances this conference.

     

    The win could serve as the turning point the Giant Risers have been searching for after enduring months of setbacks. Instead of allowing outside noise to define their campaign, the team answered with its strongest showing yet against one of the league’s toughest opponents.

     

    Now carrying renewed confidence, the Giant Risers will try to build on their first victory when they take on the Macau Giant Pandas on Saturday, July 25, once again at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.

    Under veteran head coach Yeng Guiao and with the backing of co-owners Terry Que and Raymond Yu, Rain or Shine built its roster patiently through the draft and smart player development, resulting in two PBA championships and six Finals appearances. It is a model Arsolon believes the Ultra Giants can realistically emulate in the years ahead.

     

    “Navigating a league dominated by sister-team setups requires a strategic model for growth. The Rain or Shine prototype has proven highly effective over the last decade, and that is the standard we are aiming for,” Arsolon said in a media interaction.

     

    With that philosophy in mind, Titan Ultra’s front office has shifted its attention toward the upcoming PBA Rookie Draft, a process the organization views as a pivotal step in building a competitive core. The franchise currently possesses one first-round selection and four second-round picks in the upcoming draft, while also holding another first-round pick in Season 52.

    The Ultra Giants further strengthened their future draft capital through previous transactions, including the acquisition of the Converge FiberXers’ Season 52 first-round selection and Season 51 second-round pick as part of the trade involving Dave Ildefonso.

     

    For Arsolon, those assets represent more than just future flexibility — they symbolize the beginning of the franchise’s true rebuild.

     

    “People need to understand that this is only our second conference. We are still establishing our competitive foothold, but I’m confident that this franchise has a brilliant future, and that foundation begins with the upcoming draft.

     

    “Through this draft, we will finally have the opportunity to acquire the specific pieces we need to truly compete – players who can step in and grow alongside our system. It’s important to remember that the majority of our current roster were inherited from the previous NorthPort team,” he added.

     

    The team manager also addressed the recent departure of veteran forward Calvin Abueva, whose exit generated significant discussion among fans and league observers. Arsolon clarified that the decision to part ways with Abueva was not rooted in organizational conflict, but rather in the player’s own desire to move elsewhere.

     

    “We never had any internal issues with these players. However, in Calvin’s case, he actively requested a trade. Rather than forcing a disgruntled player to stay and disrupting team chemistry, we honored his request. Trading Calvin was not part of our overarching strategy, it was an incidental adjustment,” Arsolon continued.

     

    As for Munzon, the franchise remains publicly committed to retaining one of its premier offensive weapons despite persistent trade speculation. While no formal announcement has been made regarding his future, the organization’s leadership appears determined to dispel the notion that the Ultra Giants are merely a transitional stop for elite talent.

     

    Instead, the franchise is positioning itself as a team willing to endure short-term struggles in exchange for long-term stability and competitiveness. With a growing stockpile of draft assets, a renewed emphasis on player development, and a management group committed to establishing a clear identity, Titan Ultra hope the difficult lessons from the Commissioner’s Cup campaign will ultimately serve as the foundation for a brighter future in the PBA.

The loss was not just another mark in the standings—it was a stark reminder of the defensive lapses and inconsistency that have plagued the team throughout the conference.

     

    Despite the team’s continued slide, Joshua Munzon has remained a rare bright spot. The 31-year-old guard once again led from the front, finishing with 24 points, three rebounds, and four assists. On a night where little went right for Titan Ultra, Munzon’s performance stood out as a testament to his professionalism and steady approach amid adversity.

    “135 points, there’s no defense. The defense wasn’t there. We also didn’t make shots tonight, that’s how the game went. Not much we can do about that but I feel like we got decent shots, we just didn’t convert,” Munzon said in the postmatch press conference.

    “It’s my job. At the end of the day. I love my job. I love to play basketball. You have to adapt, in all jobs. No job is gonna be perfect, it’s about adapting to whatever is asked of me. Just trying to do that, trying to contribute on offense and defense and at the same time be a good teammate. Fight through everything with my teammates,” he added.

     

    His mindset reflects that of a veteran trying to guide a team still finding its identity. Titan Ultra’s roster is largely composed of young, inexperienced players, many of whom are navigating only their second conference in the league. The learning curve has been steep, and the results have followed suit.

     

    “This is just a young team. A lot of inexperienced guys that are only gaining experience as we go. Second conference, new head coach this conference. We are just figuring it out on the go, taking it game by game. We are just trying to go every game,” Munzon concluded.

     

    With their playoff hopes already extinguished, the Giant Risers now shift their focus to salvaging pride and building momentum for the future. Each remaining game offers an opportunity to develop chemistry, refine their system, and gain valuable experience against more established squads.

     

    Their next test comes against the NLEX Road Warriors on Tuesday, May 5, once again at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium. While the stakes may no longer involve postseason implications, the matchup still carries significance for a team eager to end a difficult campaign on a more positive note—and perhaps lay the groundwork for a more competitive showing in the conferences ahead.
