The blockbuster trade that would send Kawhi Leonard from the Los Angeles Clippers to the Toronto Raptors remains in limbo as the National Basketball Association (NBA) continues its ongoing investigation into allegations surrounding the veteran superstar’s contract and financial arrangements.
Toronto and Los Angeles recently agreed in principle to a massive deal that would reunite Leonard with the franchise where he captured his first NBA championship in 2019. Under the proposed agreement, the Raptors would acquire Leonard in exchange for Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, unprotected first-round draft picks in 2031 and 2033, a 2027 first-round pick swap, and two second-round selections.
The transaction, however, cannot be officially completed until the NBA concludes its investigation into whether the Clippers violated league salary cap regulations by allegedly providing Leonard with additional financial benefits through his reported $28 million endorsement agreement with now-bankrupt financial technology company Aspiration.

League officials are examining whether those endorsement payments effectively served as undisclosed compensation, potentially allowing the Clippers to circumvent NBA salary cap rules. Until the investigation reaches a conclusion, both franchises remain unable to finalize one of the most significant trades of the offseason.
According to both organizations, the deal remains in place in principle, but league approval is required before it can become official.
As scrutiny surrounding the investigation continues, the Clippers once again issued a detailed public statement strongly denying any wrongdoing and reiterating their full cooperation with NBA investigators throughout the process.
“For the past 10 months, our organization has fully cooperated with an NBA investigation, participating in dozens of interviews, providing tens of thousands of documents, and facilitating access to our staff. While the process has been challenging, we have remained committed to transparency,” the statement read.
“On June 30, we reached an agreement in principle to trade Kawhi Leonard to the Toronto Raptors. We have since been informed that the trade can only be finalized if the Raptors’ ownership group assumes the risk of penalties related to Kawhi’s contract that could theoretically result from the ongoing investigation. The investigation is ongoing, and we expect the trade to be finalized following its conclusion.

“At the heart of this investigation are Joe Sanberg and Aspiration. We did not funnel money to Kawhi Leonard through Aspiration. Like many sophisticated investors, financial institutions, and business partners, we were victims of a fraud initiated by Sanberg, who has been convicted and sentenced to 14 years in prison.
“We recognize the uncertainty this has created and the impact it has had on our team, our fans, the Raptors organization, their fans, and the players whose futures remain affected while this process continues.
“We remain confident that, when the facts are evaluated fairly and thoroughly, the NBA will confirm exactly what we have said from the beginning: We have not done what we are accused of doing,” the statement concluded.
The investigation has become one of the league’s most closely watched off-court developments, not only because of Leonard’s stature as one of the NBA’s premier players but also because of the potential implications for both franchises. Depending on the league’s findings, any penalties could range from financial sanctions to restrictions involving Leonard’s contract, making the outcome particularly significant for Toronto’s front office before officially completing the acquisition.
For the Raptors, the delay means uncertainty over a move that could dramatically reshape the team’s championship aspirations.
