“It’s up to us to bend our game around him”: LeBron James fitting his game around Luka Doncic

The Los Angeles Lakers have made a strong statement in the early stages of the 2025-26 National Basketball Association (NBA) season, compiling a 23-12 record to sit fourth in the highly competitive Western Conference standings.

Much of the Lakers’ momentum has been fueled by the return of franchise icon LeBron James, who continues to defy Father Time at 41. On Wednesday, January 7 (Philippine Standard Time), LeBron poured in 30 points against the New Orleans Pelicans at the Smoothie King Center, demonstrating that he remains a key contributor for the team despite his age and previous injury concerns.

While LeBron’s scoring and leadership are invaluable, the four-time NBA champion has been clear about the Lakers’ hierarchy, emphasizing the central role of Dallas Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic.

“Luka Doncic don’t need to bend his game for me. Luka is our 26-year-old franchise for this ballclub. He don’t need to bend his game. It is up to us to bend our game around him and figure it out,” LeBron said in a media session.

The veteran forward added: “We just try to be dynamic and work off of him. We know he is an unbelievable pick-and-roll player, unbelievable shotmaker. He commands the defense. He has four eyes, sometimes six eyes on him. So, it’s up to us to put ourselves in the right position. It’s not a problem for me; it’s not an issue for me.”

LeBron has also shouldered additional responsibility amid injury setbacks, with starters Austin Reaves and Rui Hachimura sidelined due to left and right calf injuries, respectively. Despite these absences, the Lakers managed to win three consecutive games before falling to the San Antonio Spurs on Thursday, January 8 (Philippine Standard Time).

“We are just trying to weather the storm with the guys that we have. But, it is going to start with me and Luka, for sure. Every time we hit the floor. He has the ball in his hands. I’m going to have the ball in my hands. We have to make sure we are putting our guys in position offensively, and then defensively,” LeBron explained.

The Lakers have also benefited from LeBron’s resurgence after returning from a sciatica-related condition, which had limited his production early in the season. In his first six games, he averaged just 14 points per contest on 41.3 percent shooting. Since then, however, he has stepped up, not just as a scorer but as a floor general and mentor to younger teammates.

Despite LeBron’s efforts, it is clear that Doncic has become the face of the franchise. The Lakers’ offensive schemes and rotations are increasingly built around the 26-year-old guard, who draws constant defensive attention and creates opportunities for his teammates. LeBron’s willingness to defer to Doncic underscores his leadership and team-first mentality, a trait that has defined his career.

Looking ahead, the Lakers’ success this season will likely depend on maintaining this balance between experience and youth, health and depth. With LeBron still playing at a high level and Luka anchoring the offense, the Lakers are well-positioned to remain a formidable contender in the Western Conference. How the team navigates injuries and maximizes its dynamic duo will be crucial if they aim to make a deep playoff run and contend for another championship.

  • Luka Dončić, Giannis Antetokounmpo maintain lead in second NBA All-Star Fan returns

Luka Dončić, Giannis Antetokounmpo maintain lead in second NBA All-Star Fan returns

Luka Dončić and Giannis Antetokounmpo continue to dominate the fan voting for the 2025-26 NBA All-Star Game, remaining the top overall vote-getters in the latest update released Tuesday. The two international superstars also led the initial returns on Dec. 29, and their positions atop the Western and Eastern Conferences remain unchanged eight days later.

Dončić, now in his first full season with the Los Angeles Lakers following last year’s blockbuster trade, leads all players with 2,229,811 votes. Antetokounmpo, in his 13th campaign with the Milwaukee Bucks, follows closely with 2,092,284 votes. Fan voting accounts for 50% of the selection process for All-Star starters, with NBA players and a media panel each contributing 25%.

Voting will close on Jan. 14 at 11:59 p.m. ET, and both Tuesday and Wednesday are designated as the final “3-for-1 Days,” during which each fan vote counts triple.

The All-Star starters will be officially revealed on Jan. 19 during a special broadcast on NBC and Peacock. The All-Star Game itself is set for Feb. 15 at the Los Angeles Clippers’ Intuit Dome, where the league will debut a brand-new format: a USA vs. World round-robin tournament—an appropriate stage considering the current leaders are both global icons.

Dončić has been sensational throughout the season, averaging a league-best 33.7 points per game to go along with six 40-point performances in just 26 appearances. He opened the campaign with back-to-back 40-point outings, becoming only the fourth player in NBA history to do so.

Antetokounmpo, despite the Bucks’ disappointing 16-20 record and his own injury-related absences, remains dominant. The two-time MVP is putting up 29.3 points, 10 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game in his 22 contests, even as Milwaukee once again navigates swirling trade rumors around its franchise star.

Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokić and New York Knicks guard Jalen Brunson currently rank second in fan voting in their respective conferences. Brunson, averaging 31.2 points since Dec. 5, has surged past Philadelphia 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey, who slipped from second to third in the East in the updated tally.

Top 10 NBA All-Star fan vote leaders (Second Returns):

    1. Luka Dončić — 2,229,811

    2. Giannis Antetokounmpo — 2,092,284

    3. Nikola Jokić — 1,998,560

    10. Jaylen Brown — 1,514,259

With voting soon coming to a close and several players making strong late-season pushes, the race for All-Star starter spots is heating up—and the final days could see major shifts before lineups are officially announced.

  • “One of the best quarterbacks”: LeBron James praises Luka Dončić after Lakers win

“One of the best quarterbacks”: LeBron James praises Luka Dončić after Lakers win

The Los Angeles Lakers have gotten off to an impressive start in the 2025–26 National Basketball Association (NBA) season, posting a 22–11 record to sit third in the Western Conference standings.

Despite dealing with a growing list of injuries, the Lakers continue to find ways to win. They showcased that resilience in their most recent outing on Monday, January 5 (Philippine Standard Time), edging the Memphis Grizzlies 120–114 at the Crypto.com Arena.

Once again, the Lakers leaned heavily on the star duo of Luka Dončić and LeBron James. Dončić delivered a near triple-double performance with 36 points, nine rebounds, and eight assists, while James flirted with one himself, finishing with 26 points, seven rebounds, and 10 assists. The difference this time, however, was the timely support from Jake LaRavia, who chipped in 26 points along with five rebounds and four assists to help steady the shorthanded Lakers.

Dončić’s impact on the team continues to grow, with the All-NBA guard quickly establishing himself as a cornerstone of the franchise. His ability to control the tempo and create opportunities has not gone unnoticed—especially by James, who once again praised his younger teammate’s vision and playmaking.

“One of the best quarterbacks and I’m a pretty good receiver, when it comes to that. It’s my job to not allow the defense to break that up or steal the ball. And he put it right on target, and made it a lot easier for me,” LeBron said in a media interaction.

The 41-year-old also drew a comparison from American football, referencing NFL Hall of Fame wide receiver Randy Moss to describe a specific type of on-court connection.

“Yeah, for sure. I watched him a lot growing up and he did that a lot. Actually, when I played football I kind of took that tip from him as well and I guess I brought it to the game of basketball as well when I had that seal,” he added.

James noted that this dynamic is not entirely new for him. During his time with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Kevin Love often played a similar “quarterback” role, making outlet passes and initiating offense. That experience has translated well alongside Dončić, whose elite passing ability allows James to thrive off the ball.

With injuries testing their depth, the Lakers’ evolving chemistry—particularly between Dončić and James—has become a crucial factor in their strong early-season run. As long as the duo continues to click, Los Angeles appears well-positioned to remain among the Western Conference’s top contenders.
