    Magnolia taps Nuni Omot as new import ahead of PBA Commissioner’s Cup 

    Before the 2026 PBA Commissioner’s Cup kicks off, the Magnolia Hotshots have made a bold move, bringing in a new import to lead their campaign.


    Nuni Omot will take over for Terrell Brown-Soares, who was released on Wednesday, giving the Hotshots fresh firepower as they aim for a strong showing in the tournament.

     

    Omot, a 6-foot-9 forward, has carved out a reputation as a globe-trotting scorer. A Baylor University product, he went undrafted in the 2018 NBA Draft but saw action with the Long Island Nets in the NBA G League before venturing overseas. 

     

    His professional journey has taken him to leagues in North Macedonia, the Netherlands, Turkey, Germany, Egypt, France, China, Israel, Rwanda, and most recently Al Riyadi Beirut in Lebanon.

     

    During his time with Al Ahly in 2023, Omot earned MVP honors in the Basketball Africa League, showcasing his scoring prowess. 

     

    He continued to dominate in the West Asia Super League, averaging 21.8 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 1.3 steals per game for Al Riyadi. With the WASL and Lebanese league on hold due to conflicts in the Middle East, Omot is now available to make his PBA impact.

    Omot’s international credentials are equally impressive. Representing South Sudan’s national basketball team, he delivered a breakout performance at the 2024 Summer Olympics, averaging 16.7 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game. 

     

    His standout showing came against Team USA, pouring in 24 points on 8-of-12 shooting in South Sudan’s 103-86 loss.

     

    Magnolia fans will get their first glimpse of Omot on Friday, when the Hotshots face the Phoenix Fuel Masters. His scoring ability, size, and international experience could provide the boost Magnolia needs as they look to make a statement in the Commissioner’s Cup.

     

    With Omot on board, Magnolia hopes to navigate the early games with confidence and secure a strong playoff position, signaling their intent to contend seriously for the Commissioner’s Cup title.

    Magnolia Hotshots sign Terrell Brown-Soares as import for PBA Commissioner’s Cup

    The Magnolia Hotshots have bolstered their roster ahead of the upcoming Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Commissioner’s Cup, signing University of San Diego standout Terrell Brown-Soares as their import with hopes of making a deep run in the midseason tournament.

     

    Brown-Soares arrived in Manila over the weekend and wasted no time getting acclimated to his new environment. On Sunday, February 8, the 6-foot-9 big man shared a lunch meeting with Magnolia head coach and PBA legend LA Tenorio, giving both sides an early opportunity to discuss expectations, system fit, and preparations for the Commissioner’s Cup.

     

    “He is a new import. Hopefully, he will fit in well with the team,” Tenorio said when asked by the media about Magnolia’s new reinforcement.

    Magnolia is banking on Brown-Soares’ size, mobility, and versatility in the frontcourt as the team looks to improve on its recent performances and reassert itself as a title contender. Known for his ability to score inside, rebound effectively, and stretch the floor when needed, Brown-Soares is expected to play a key role on both ends of the floor in a conference where imports often dictate a team’s fortunes.

     

    Brown-Soares enjoyed a productive collegiate career at the University of San Diego, where he established himself as one of the West Coast Conference’s most reliable big men. After declaring for the National Basketball Association (NBA) Draft, he went undrafted but continued to pursue his professional career overseas. His journey has taken him across multiple countries, including stints in the Czech Republic and Mexico, before most recently suiting up for Miasto Szkla Krosno in Poland.

     

    Now, the Philippine basketball scene represents a new challenge—and opportunity—for Brown-Soares, who joins a Magnolia squad blending veteran leadership with emerging local talent. As the Commissioner’s Cup approaches, all eyes will be on how quickly the new import adjusts to the physicality, pace, and passionate atmosphere of the PBA, and whether he can help propel the Hotshots toward another championship run.

    LA Tenorio on the fence over playing-coach role in the future

    It was fitting that in the PBA’s historic golden season, one of its most influential players would reach a milestone reserved for the greats.

     

    When Magnolia Hotshots head coach LA Tenorio suited up against the TNT Tropang 5G in the Philippine Cup quarterfinals after a slew of backcourt injuries, he became only the seventh playing-coach in the league’s rich history.

     

    Magnolia eventually bowed down and exited the postseason, but it was still a mark of excellence not just for his player-coach feat, but for the success the Hotshots achieved during Tenorio’s first-ever head-coaching stint at the professional level.

     

    Despite the incoming returns of Jerom Lastimosa and Paul Lee from injuries in the upcoming conferences, Tenorio isn’t entirely ruling out continuing to be an on-court tactician for Magnolia.

     

    “We’ll see. Nag-playing coach lang ako kasi Jerom (Lastimosa) wasn’t sure kung makakabalik,” Tenorio said.

     

    “We’ll see. Ako naman I want to join practices for them to see kung ano yung..siyempre mga bata yan. They want to do things on their own right away,” he added.

    Adding on to a decently successful season, Tenorio stressed that the players are still getting used to the system he integrated since being appointed at the start of the season.

     

    “And iniba ko talaga completely yung sistema nila for the past years na nasanay sila. So yung system nila, yung habits nila wasn’t there pa,” he said. “So medyo nahihirapan pa sila. Sometimes, nai-stuck pa sila, hindi nila alam kung ano ang gagawin.“So ‘yon ang kailangan naming planuhin at puliduhin this break.” 

     

    Magnolia will also take solace in the development of stars Lastimosa and Zavier Lucero, as well as the rise of rookies Yukien Andrada and Chris Koon, as franchise pillars ahead of Tenorio’s future as head coach.
