    Jerrick Ahanmisi eager to learn from Marcio Lassiter after joining San Miguel 

    For most shooters in the PBA, studying Marcio Lassiter means watching game film or admiring his highlights from afar.

     

    Jerrick Ahanmisi now gets something even better.

     

    After years of looking up to the league’s all-time leader in three-pointers, the newest San Miguel Beermen guard now shares the same locker room with the player he considers a role model, turning admiration into a daily learning opportunity.

     

    Ahanmisi wasted little time making an impact, scoring 16 points with four rebounds and four assists in San Miguel’s convincing 123-109 victory over guest team Macau in its PBA Season 50 Governors’ Cup opener on Tuesday.

     

    Despite the encouraging debut, the former Terrafirma guard believes his biggest gain may come away from the stat sheet.

     

    “I’m super honored. Super blessed,” Ahanmisi said of playing alongside Lassiter.

    “Because he’s the best three-point shooter in the league right now, right? It’s just something for me to keep learning on.”

     

    Their connection as elite marksmen dates back to the PBA All-Star festivities in Candon earlier this year.

     

    The two battled for the Three-Point Shootout crown, with Lassiter appearing headed for another title after posting 25 points before Ahanmisi caught fire in the final round, draining 30 to steal the championship and complete a double victory after winning the Obstacle Challenge.

     

    Even after defeating his idol, Ahanmisi never hid the respect he has for the veteran sniper.

     

    “I look up to Marcio all the time,” the 28-year-old said after that contest.

     

    “Even before I came into the PBA, I looked up to him as a shooter, as a role model.”

    That admiration has now evolved into a mentorship following his offseason move to San Miguel.

    The Beermen acquired Ahanmisi and Paolo Hernandez from Terrafirma in exchange for Juami Tiongson and Chris Miller, giving the former Adamson standout a chance to learn directly from one of the league’s greatest shooters.

     

    “I’m just gonna keep asking how he stayed that long, how he got to that record, how he’s number one, and hopefully I can follow in his footsteps,” he said.

     

    Still adjusting to his new surroundings, Ahanmisi admitted there’s plenty of room for improvement despite helping San Miguel open the conference with a victory.

     

    “I think I did pretty well. But there are always things that I can improve on,” he said.

     

    “So hopefully the next game will be a little bit better. I can be a little bit more efficient, too, in getting my own shots and learning from my teammates.”

     

    Fortunately for Ahanmisi, Lassiter isn’t the only veteran guiding him.

     

    Surrounded by championship winners like Chris Ross and June Mar Fajardo, the sharpshooter believes he has landed in the perfect environment to continue developing his game.

     

    “They’re all really cool,” Ahanmisi said.

     

    “I’m glad that I got them as my vets ’cause if I’m having trouble with anything or if I’m making mistakes, I can go up to them and ask them what’ going on or where I can be better at, and they’re really open to helping me out.”

     

    With one impressive debut behind him and experienced mentors around him, Ahanmisi hopes the lessons he learns in San Miguel will be be just as valuable as the points he scores.

    Marcio Lassiter delivers best game since 2019, but winning still outweighs big night in San Miguel loss

    For Marcio Lassiter, the feeling of a perfect shooting night is incomplete without the one thing that matters most—a win.


    The veteran player turned in his best performance in years, rediscovering his deadly touch from beyond the arc with a 27-point explosion that nearly carried San Miguel back from the brink. But instead of celebrating, Lassiter walked away focused on what slipped through their hands.

     

    “A loss is a loss. As much as it was good that we were able to catch up, it doesn’t mean anything if we don’t win,” Lassiter said. 

     

    There was a moment when the game shifted—not in the standings, but in spirit. Down by as many as 25, San Miguel suddenly looked alive, dangerous even, with Lassiter at the center of it all.

     

    Every made three-pointer chipped away at what once seemed like an insurmountable lead. Each shot brought energy back to the Beermen bench and tension to an unbeaten Rain or Shine squad sitting comfortably atop the standings. 

     

    In what turned out to be his most explosive scoring night in years, Lassiter poured in 27 points, knocking down seven triples in a reminder of why he owns the PBA’s all-time three-point record.

    His fourth-quarter surge alone, 17 points which is nearly completed what would have been one of San Miguel’s most memorable comebacks.

     

    “I wish we won. It felt good. But it really didn’t feel good. We lost,” said the 38-year-old Beermen who bowed to Rain or Shine, 116-112.

     

    His shooting display even drew comparisons to Stephen Curry, with opposing import Jaylen Johnson among those impressed.

     

    “That’s high praise… especially coming from an import. But honestly, it doesn’t mean as much because we lost,” he said. 

     

    For Lassiter, the rhythm he found offensively was never about chasing numbers. It was about responding to the moment and taking what the defense gave.

     

    “I just knew if I could get one, maybe another one can go after that. I was just trying to be aggressive and just looking for shots or looking for teammates,” Lassiter said.

     

     

    “So long as I’m just out there trying to take good shots, I know that I’m capable of making them. Tonight was one of those nights that if I get a good look, I can make it.”

     

    San Miguel’s rally ultimately fell short, handing Rain or Shine its statement win while dropping the Beermen to a 3-3 record in the conference.

     

    “I just know the results usually show when we win games, and that (scoring) doesn’t really mean a lot to me. If we won, it would mean a lot. But I just hope that, you know, we get a little rhythm, play a little bit better,” he shared.

     

    Next up is another chance to turn effort into results, as San Miguel faces the Magnolia Hotshots at the Araneta Coliseum.

    The spotlight on shooting excellence will burn bright in Candon, Ilocos Sur as the PBA gathers some of the league’s deadliest perimeter threats for the Long Distance Shootout during the upcoming All-Star Weekend.

     

    Leading the stacked field are reigning Three-Point Shootout champion Calvin Oftana and San Miguel sharpshooter Marcio Lassiter, whose reputation as the most prolific three-point shooter in league history adds another layer of intrigue to the contest.

     

    Oftana enters the event with the confidence of a defending champion. The TNT forward captured the crown in the 2024 All-Star festivities in Bacolod City after outgunning Magnolia’s Paul Lee in the finals, cementing his status as one of the PBA’s most reliable marksmen.

     

    Sharing the stage with him is Lassiter, who etched his name in league history the same year by surpassing Jimmy Alapag as the PBA’s all-time leader in three-pointers made. Now 38, the veteran remains a dangerous long-range threat and will look to prove that his shooting touch remains as lethal as ever.

     

    The competition, however, will be far from a two-man duel.

     

    A deep cast of shooters will try to steal the spotlight, including Rain or Shine’s Andrei Caracut, Terrafirma guard Jerrick Ahanmisi, Titan Ultra’s Joshua Munzon, Phoenix playmaker Tyler Tio, Magnolia’s Zavier Lucero, and Blackwater scorer Sedrick Barefield.

    NLEX’s Xyrus Torres, Meralco swingman CJ Cansino, Barangay Ginebra guard Ralph Cu, and Converge rookie Juan Gomez de Liaño also round out the lineup, each bringing their own shooting arsenal into one of the most anticipated side events of the weekend.

     

    Beyond the three-point spectacle, the league will also stage the Obstacle Challenge, a fast-paced contest designed to highlight speed, agility, and ball-handling among both guards and big men.

     

    Among the backcourt entries, NLEX star Robert Bolick and Barangay Ginebra rookie RJ Abarrientos headline the field. They will battle a competitive group that includes Gomez de Liaño, Tio, TNT’s Rey Nambatac, Ahanmisi, San Miguel’s Juami Tiongson, Titan Ultra guard Fran Yu, Rain or Shine rookie Felix Lemetti, Magnolia’s Jerom Lastimosa, Meralco veteran Anjo Caram, and rookie Dalph Panopio.

     

    The big men will have their own spotlight as San Miguel’s JM Calma returns to defend the Obstacle Challenge title he won two years ago in Bacolod.

     

    Back then playing for NorthPort, the 6-foot-6 big man topped Santi Santillan of Rain or Shine and Magnolia center James Laput in the finals to capture the crown.

     

    This time, Calma faces a deeper field that includes Laput, Barangay Ginebra veteran Japeth Aguilar, Converge center Justin Arana, Meralco’s Raymond Almazan, TNT forward Henry Galinato, NLEX’s Brandon Ramirez, Blackwater big man Abu Tratter, Terrafirma rookie Gian Chiu, Phoenix youngster Kai Balungay, Rain or Shine veteran Beau Belga, and Titan Ultra’s Damie Cuntapay.

     

    The PBA All-Star festivities are scheduled from March 6 to 8, promising three days of entertainment and skill showcases that will bring the league’s brightest talents together in Ilocos Sur.
