In 2014, Guiao was fined P100,000 by the PBA after referring to Hodge with an offensive slur following a separate on-court incident.     “I saw him coming full speed,” Hodge explained. “I went in to take a charge and at the moment I was going to take a charge, he sidestepped. He sidestepped right into my knee and then he dished it, so then we both went down.”

     

    The collision sparked plenty of discussion among fans and observers on social media, with opinions divided over whether the contact was an unfortunate basketball play or another example of Hodge’s trademark physicality. Throughout his PBA career, the former Best Import has built a reputation as one of the league’s toughest and most relentless defenders, often drawing both praise for his hustle and criticism for his aggressive approach.

    The spotlight may fall on the imports Friday night, but for Magnolia and Barangay Ginebra, winning will depend on far more than foreign firepower.

     

    As the PBA Season 50 Governors’ Cup heads to the SM Mall of Asia Arena, two of the league’s most popular franchises enter pivotal matchups searching for consistency after uneven starts to the conference.

     

    Magnolia opens the twin bill against Rain or Shine, while Barangay Ginebra renews its rivalry with Meralco in the featured showdown.

     

    For the Hotshots, head coach LA Tenorio believes import KJ Buffen doesn’t have to carry the burden alone.

     

    Magnolia finally snapped its 0-2 start by defeating Meralco, 112-98, behind another productive outing from Buffen, who finished with 26 points. But what pleased Tenorio even more was how the locals took over in the second half, allowing Buffen to focus on rebounding, defense, and making winning plays.

     

    That balanced attack is exactly what Tenorio wants moving forward.

     

    Having spent more than a decade alongside Justin Brownlee during Ginebra’s dynasty, Tenorio knows even the league’s greatest imports relied heavily on their teammates.

     

    “As good as Justin Brownlee is… I’ve been with him for so many years, the support of the locals talaga ang naging success nu’ng run namin na iyon. He’s really good, but I was telling them Justin is good because of the support of the locals also,” narrated Tenorio.

     

    Rather than expecting Buffen to replicate Brownlee’s accomplishments, the Magnolia mentor has been impressed by the import’s willingness to grow with the team.

     

    “Ang maganda rin kasi sa kanya he’s learning also and at the same time na buong team natututo dahil sa mga bata kong mga players,” the coach said.

     

    “But he’s been really working hard with the team, he listens to the locals. I think ‘yun ‘yung importante, very good attitude towards the game and he accepts ‘yung mga mistakes. So I think ‘yun ‘yung importante and for me that’s what we need in this team.

     

    “He’s not a leader per se, but by doing that parang ni-li-lead niya rin ‘yung team namin, eh.”

    The Elasto Painters have rebounded from an 0-2 start, and head coach Yeng Guiao credits the team’s renewed commitment on the defensive end.

     

    “I think it’s a wakeup call. After that we’ve been playing better defense saka better rebounding,” Guiao pointed out.

     

    “Hindi ako worried about our offense, eh. I think we’ve scored more than 100 points every game. So it’s really just playing good defense, rebounding. When we get our rebounds, we’re able to run.

    “So itong mga bata, nag-focus lang sila doon sa mga bagay na dapat naming gawin kaya siguro nakabawi kami.”

     

    The second game presents another interesting contrast.

     

    Ginebra remains without injured resident import Justin Brownlee, leaving Riley Grigsby to continue filling one of the biggest shoes in the league.

    Newsome scored the go-ahead basket with just 3.9 seconds remaining as Meralco escaped with a tense 116-114 victory over Blackwater in the PBA Season 50 Governor’s Cup on Tuesday, July 21, at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.

     

    The win was anything but comfortable for the Bolts, who squandered an 18-point advantage before relying on a perfectly executed final possession to improve to 2-1 in Group B.

     

    After seeing their once-commanding 110-92 lead disappear, Meralco turned to its veterans in crunch time. Chris Banchero pushed the ball up the floor following a defensive stop and found a cutting Newsome for an inside finish that restored the lead at 116-114 with only three seconds left.

     

    Blackwater had one last opportunity, but Meralco’s defense held firm to preserve the victory and hand the Bossing their first defeat in Group B.

     

    Newsome finished with 16 points, four assists, and three rebounds, but his final basket proved to be the difference in a game that shifted dramatically in the closing minutes.

     

    Import Antonio Hester paced the Bolts with a double-double of 25 points and 12 rebounds, knocking down three four-pointers to anchor the offense. CJ Cansino chipped in 15 points, while Clifford Hodge added 14.

    The Bolts, however, came up with their biggest defensive play of the night by stopping Barkley on Blackwater’s final offensive possession before Banchero ignited the fast break that led to Newsome’s winning basket.

     

    “I saw New and it was natural. I threw it to him and he had a good finish. I thought New did a great job tonight as well, defending their import,” Banchero said.

     

    Despite the victory, Meralco acknowledged there were lessons to be learned after allowing Blackwater back into the contest.

     

    “When you’re up 17 and crumble, that’s not what we want to do. We’ll look at everything in the next practice. When you’re up by 17, you have to figure out how to put that team away,” Banchero added.

     

    Head coach Luigi Trillo also credited Blackwater’s resilience after nearly pulling off the comeback.

    “You have to give Blackwater credit. We were up 17 points in the third and they didn’t quit. Good na lang that we’re able to shoot the ball from that pass to New (Newsome),” said Trillo.

     

    For Blackwater, Sedrick Barefield led all local scorers with 29 points, while Barkley contributed 28. RK Ilagan finished with 20 points, and Dalph Panopio added 11 as the Bossing slipped to their first loss of the conference.

     

    Both teams return to action on Friday, July 24. Blackwater faces Barangay Ginebra San Miguel in the main game, while Meralco takes on Magnolia as the Bolts seek to build on their second straight victory.

    The Meralco Bolts walked away from their season opener with more than just a heartbreaking one-point defeat. Head coach Luigi Trillo left the Smart Araneta Coliseum believing the outcome could have been different if the game had been officiated with greater consistency.


    Meralco pushed the Phoenix Fuel Masters to the limit despite playing without import Jordon Varnado, who remained sidelined as he continues to recover from a minor injury. The Bolts relied on their all-Filipino core and nearly stole the contest before eventually falling, 98-97, in a game decided by the slimmest of margins.

     

    Rather than dwelling on the result itself, Trillo pointed to several late-game sequences that, in his view, highlighted inconsistencies in how contact was called.

     

    “I think both teams played well. Congrats to Phoenix. It came down to possessions. But I don’t know, those last few possessions, they didn’t call fouls. They went three times to the basket and there were fouls called,” Trillo told reporters after the game.

     

    “Our main guy, star player, [Chris] Newsome gets hacked three times but there’s no call. So I can understand why our guys, I kind of shook hands and then I saw they were all there, even our governor, the manager,” he added.

     

    One of the biggest moments came with just 43 seconds left, when Phoenix’s JL Delos Santos denied Chris Newsome near the basket. Trillo believed the play deserved a whistle and said such moments have a major impact on the outcome of close contests.

     

    “Those calls need to be made because those are decisions where you dictate the game. So they got to the free-throw line three times in those last three possessions and we did not… I think you have to come down to consistency,” he said.

    “And these little things in the end, that’s tough for us. But again, you have to roll with the punches. 26 to 20 fouls. I think if they had called one or two, it wouldn’t be that far. Clearly, Phoenix earned that win because they kept on trying. They were down hard. They got to the basket. They were aggressive and they got some calls,” Trillo said.

     

    While the PBA has begun aligning its officiating standards more closely with FIBA rules, Trillo clarified that his concern is not about adapting to new interpretations but ensuring both teams are judged under the same standard throughout the game.

     

    “No adjustment. It’s clear. If our guy gets to the basket and if that gets hit here, that’s a foul. And you see them going to the basket, it’s the same. I like the way things are. But at the end of the day, coaches get fired. They should put pressure on the referee or the guy in charge. He should also get fired if he’s not doing his job,” he said.

     

    “We’re at the short end of the stick this time, so it is what it is. But clearly, at the end, it’s not a guarantee you’ll win the game. But you’re just looking for consistency from both,” Trillo added.

     

    Despite the loss, the Bolts showed encouraging signs even without their reinforcement. CJ Cansino led Meralco with 18 points, three rebounds, and one assist, while Allein Maliksi added 16 points and two rebounds. Brandon Bates anchored the paint with a double-double of 14 points and 15 rebounds.

     

    Meralco now shifts its attention to its next assignment, where replacement import Antonio Hester is expected to make his debut. The Bolts aim to bounce back on Saturday when they face the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters at the Ynares Center in Antipolo, hoping a reinforced lineup can turn a promising performance into their first win of the campaign.

    “It’s important to understand what are the clear rules that we’re going to play with. That way it’s fair for all teams. That’s all I want is transparency on how we’re going to play the game.”

     

    The 35-year-old, who has long been regarded as one of the PBA’s premier two-way players and a respected veteran leader, emphasized that consistency—not perfection—is what players ultimately seek from officiating.

     

    He acknowledged the difficult job referees face in managing fast-paced, physical games but maintained that uniform application of the rules is crucial throughout the season.

     

    “We can, of course, go look at the film and see the fouls that they called and see if the same actions on the other side were made or not called,” Newsome said. “But I understand the refs’ movement also.”

     

    “For me, it’s just about holding the standard, having a standard to follow. As long as everybody’s on the same page, we’ll go out there and play basketball. That’s all I need is transparency and clarity for how we’re going to play this game.”

     

    Despite the frustrating defeat, Newsome made it clear that neither he nor the team intends to dwell on the controversy. Instead, the Bolts are shifting their focus toward bouncing back in their next assignment as they continue their pursuit of another Governors’ Cup title.

Hester later joined the Magnolia Hotshots for the 2023 Governors’ Cup before returning to Terrafirma in 2024. Outside the PBA, he also represented the Zamboanga Valientes in the ASEAN Basketball League, further strengthening his ties to Philippine basketball.

     

    Interestingly, Hester is no stranger to the Meralco organization either. He previously reinforced the Bolts during the 2025 Basketball Champions League Asia tournament in Dubai, giving him familiarity with the team’s system and several members of the current roster. That previous stint is expected to help ease his transition as Meralco looks to quickly bounce back from its opening-game setback.

     

    While Hester has been signed to fill the immediate void, Trillo emphasized that the move does not signal the end of Varnado’s stint with the team. According to the Bolts manager, Varnado’s injury is considered minor, and the organization remains committed to bringing him back once he has fully recovered.

     

    “We are putting him in the reserves first for now. It’s a minor injury eh, so I don’t know how many days. He’s day-to-day. But we need an import. Hopefully. It’s not a major injury. It’s just a muscle strain. So the doctors already saw it. Of course, those types of injuries, you never know. And if we force playing him, it could get worse. That would be more long-term. We are just trying to manage his injury now,” he added.

     

    Trillo’s comments underscore the team’s cautious approach to Varnado’s rehabilitation. Rather than rushing the import back into action and risking a more serious setback, the Bolts opted to secure a capable replacement while allowing the medical staff to closely monitor his recovery on a day-to-day basis.

     

    Hester is expected to arrive in Manila on Thursday, July 16, giving him limited time to acclimate before Meralco’s next assignment. Barring any unforeseen complications, the veteran import is expected to make his debut for the Bolts when they face the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters on Saturday, July 18, at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.

    For Chris Newsome, wearing the Gilas Pilipinas jersey has never been about convenience.


    Even after another grueling PBA campaign, the veteran guard once again answered the national team’s call—something Meralco coach Luigi Trillo says perfectly captures the kind of player Newsome has always been.


    Speaking to the reporters Trillo admitted he takes pride in seeing his star guard represent the country, but that pride also comes with concern.


    After helping Meralco reach the PBA Commissioner’s Cup semifinals, Newsome barely had any time to recover before immediately reporting for Gilas Pilipinas’ buildup for the 2027 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers.


    For Trillo, that’s simply who Newsome is.


    “It’s such an honor to be on a national team and any player from your team will put country first and that’s okay… but the thing with New is, he can be on one leg and he’ll still play,” he said.


    What many fans don’t see, however, is the physical punishment the 35-year-old has been enduring behind the scenes.


    According to Trillo, Newsome continues to play through lingering injuries that would sideline many players.


    “Look at his hands, his fingers aren’t sound. One of them dislocates every practice. No joke. He has to pull that finger back into place,” Trillo also revealed.


    Despite those setbacks, Newsome never hesitated when Gilas needed him.

    He suited up for the national team during its World Cup qualifying campaign, including Friday’s double-overtime battle against New Zealand. Although he was limited in minutes and finished scoreless in the 106-102 defeat, his presence remained valuable as one of the team’s veteran leaders.


    Trillo believes Newsome’s willingness to sacrifice is both admirable and worrying.


    “I think it’s a double-edged sword because of the success we’ve had deep in the playoffs and he has that. He has no time to recover, no time to rest his body. Also, New’s older now. You see some of these other guys, they will sit. New’s right there from the start, though. He’s always there. That’s Newsome for you,” he said.


    “I wish I can tell him what to do sometimes, but he’s just remarkable. New’s very committed in those aspects.”


    The demanding schedule isn’t over yet.


    Once Gilas wraps up its qualifying window against Australia on Monday, Newsome will have only a brief break before returning to Meralco, where the Bolts begin another title chase in the PBA Governors’ Cup.


    For Newsome, however, the routine has become familiar—serve the country first, recover later.

    Known for his relentless energy, scoring ability, and fearless approach on offense, the 26-year-old shooting guard has become an integral part of Meralco’s core. His rise has not gone unnoticed, with Bolts head coach Luigi Trillo praising not only Cansino’s production on the court but also the professionalism and work ethic he brings behind the scenes.

     

    While Cansino has established himself as one of the team’s most dependable offensive weapons, Trillo believes the next step in his development lies on the defensive end of the floor.

    “He is very coachable. I remember when I got mad at him and some players have ego, but CJ doesn’t have that. Can he improve defensively? I think he can. He has gained 20 pounds in the offseason. I don’t think people noticed that. That alone, shows how committed he is,” Trillo said during a media interaction.

Despite the difficult matchup, the coaching staff views the experience as a valuable learning opportunity rather than a setback.

     

    For Trillo, Cansino’s willingness to accept coaching and improve gives him confidence that the young guard can eventually become a complete two-way player.

     

    “He still needs to know how to win in the league, and that’s where some of the veterans come in, but he has been amazing. For him to be respected and to be a leader, he really needs to elevate his defense. Once he starts to get his own there, then he gets to be the voice of the locker room. Right now, he is in line with the vets and I’m very proud of what he has done but the sky’s the limit for this guy,” he added.

     

    Beyond his offensive production, Trillo believes Cansino possesses the qualities needed to become one of Meralco’s future leaders. However, earning that status requires more than scoring points. Becoming a reliable defender and embracing the responsibilities that come with being a two-way player are crucial steps in his evolution.

     

    At 26 years old, Cansino remains in the prime developmental stage of his career. With an improved physique, a strong work ethic, and a coaching staff that believes in his potential, the former collegiate standout has positioned himself to take another leap in the coming seasons.

    When Meralco began searching for its import for the PBA Season 50 Governors’ Cup, it didn’t have to look far.

     

    Instead of gambling on an unfamiliar name, the Bolts turned to someone who already knows the system, the locker room, and the expectations that come with playing for the franchise.

     

    Jordon Varnado is officially back with Meralco, giving the club a reinforcement it already trusts as it chases a breakthrough trip to the PBA Finals.

     

    The move continues a pattern that has become a hallmark of Meralco’s roster-building strategy. Rather than constantly searching for new imports, the Bolts have increasingly relied on players who have previously represented the organization in international competitions.

     

    Varnado was one of those pieces.

     

    The 29-year-old American played a key role for Meralco during the Basketball Champions League Asia 2025, where he averaged 19.7 points and 10.0 rebounds in three games. His production helped steer the Bolts into the quarterfinals before their campaign ended in a narrow defeat to Mongolia’s XAC Broncos, who eventually claimed the bronze medal.
