    TNT’s championship defense suddenly found itself hanging by a thread over the weekend. One moment, the Tropang 5G were leaning on the dominant presence of Bol Bol in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup semifinals. 

     

    The next, they were scrambling to rebuild after the towering import suffered a torn left Achilles that abruptly ended his conference.

     

    But amid the chaos, TNT chose familiarity over panic.

     

    After exploring multiple options and even bringing in former University of the Philippines standout Malick Diouf for practice sessions, coach Chot Reyes revealed that the team is now leaning toward former San Miguel Beer champion import Chris McCullough as the man tasked to stabilize TNT’s title bid.

     

    McCullough was already courtside with team manager Jojo Lastimosa during TNT’s gutsy 77-75 Game 3 victory over Meralco at the Mall of Asia Arena — a symbolic sign that the franchise may already have found its next answer.

So with McCullough, at least those variables we’ve taken out already, adjustment na lang with his teammates.”

     

    The urgency behind TNT’s search became more apparent after the franchise exhausted several emergency options. Former NBA players Marquese Chriss and Darius Days were initially explored, while Diouf even joined practice in hopes of becoming a short-term solution.     The former NBA forward arrives fresh from a stint with the Taiwan Beer Leopards, where he averaged 16.5 points, 10.4 rebounds, and 1.5 assists during the 2025-26 campaign. More importantly, he arrives knowing exactly what the pressure of winning in the PBA feels like.

     

    And for a TNT team suddenly forced to adjust in the middle of a semifinal war, that familiarity may end up mattering most.

    For most of the conference, TNT Tropang 5G spent more time searching for the right lineup than building momentum.

     

    Injuries repeatedly disrupted the defending champions’ rhythm, forcing coach Chot Reyes to shuffle combinations and adjust roles almost every game. But now, at the most important stretch of the season, TNT finally appears complete — and that reality may have created an even bigger problem for Meralco heading into Game 2 of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup semifinals on Friday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

     

    The Tropang 5G struck first in the series with a 94-89 win in Game 1, but more than the result itself, it was how TNT looked that raised concern for the Bolts.

     

    For the first time in weeks, the defending champions played with their preferred core fully available — and the difference immediately showed.

     

    Bol Manute Bol controlled the interior with 37 points, 11 rebounds, eight assists, and six blocks, while Calvin Oftana, Roger Pogoy, Rey Nambatac, and Jordan Heading gave TNT the spacing, shot-making, and versatility it lacked earlier in the conference.

     

    According to Reyes, this was the version of TNT they had envisioned all along.

     

    “That’s really a lineup we like going to because it’s pretty hard to match up and defend that lineup,” said Reyes.

     

    “We were struggling the whole conference trying to find that combination and that balance. But remember we were never fully healthy in the eliminations,” he added.

     

    “So, we were really not able to put in the lineup that we want together. Fortunately, as the eliminations wound down, we got Roger back to a hundred percent healthy and I think what you’re seeing now is being able to finally put the combinations that we want together.”

     

    The timing could not have been better for TNT.

     

    After missing eight elimination-round games, Pogoy looked fully locked in during the playoff opener, finishing with 21 points and nine rebounds while also helping slow down Meralco’s perimeter attack. Oftana added a double-double with 14 points and 11 boards, while Heading provided another offensive spark off the bench with 16 markers.

    But the biggest issue for Meralco remains Bol.

     

    The 7-foot-3 import dominated both ends despite struggling from the free throw line, where he shot just 5-of-13. Even then, his impact completely changed the complexion of the game, particularly inside where TNT overwhelmed the Bolts, 56-42, in points in the paint.

     

    That interior advantage effectively erased Meralco’s edge from the perimeter and exposed one of the team’s biggest concerns entering Game 2 — its inability to consistently contain TNT near the basket.

     

    The Bolts also struggled to find offensive rhythm themselves.

     

    Import Marvin Jones still managed 22 points and 14 rebounds, but he missed his first seven attempts and never fully established control offensively. Chris Newsome was limited to just 11 points, while CJ Cansino, one of Meralco’s reliable scorers this conference, finished with only 12 after dealing with Pogoy’s defense for most of the night. 

     

    Oddsmakers also appear to be leaning toward TNT heading into the second game of the series. According to OKBet Sportsbook, the Tropang 5G enter Game 2 as slight favorites with 1.73 odds, while Meralco is listed at 2.07 as the underdog. The over/under for the matchup has been set at 195.0, signaling expectations of another tight and physical battle between the two semifinal contenders.

    Jaylen Johnson didn’t just match Brownlee blow for blow — he completely seized control of the game when it mattered most, powering Rain or Shine Elasto Painters to a statement 115-111 victory over Barangay Ginebra San Miguel in Game 1 of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup semifinals.

     

    Against the league’s gold standard for imports, Johnson delivered arguably his finest performance yet in a Rain or Shine jersey: 40 points, 19 rebounds, three assists, and three steals in front of more than 10,000 roaring fans at the Ynares Center.

     

    And fittingly, the dagger came from him too.

     

    With Ginebra threatening another late comeback, Johnson buried a booming four-pointer that halted the Kings’ momentum and swung the energy back toward the Elasto Painters for good.

     

    For coach Yeng Guiao, it was the type of performance that elevated Johnson beyond simply having a good game.

     

    “He stepped up to the moment,” Guiao said of his import. “To be able to stand up and be able to go toe-to-toe with Justin Brownlee is already a big achievement tapos tinalo pa namin. Nakakabilib lang. Nakakabilib lang na he’s that kind of a player.”

     

    What made Johnson’s eruption even more impressive was how drastically different it looked from his first meeting against Ginebra earlier in the conference.

     

    Back then, he struggled to just 16 points in a lopsided loss.

     

    This time, he already surpassed that total before halftime.

     

    Then came the avalanche.

     

    Johnson exploded for 15 fourth-quarter points as Rain or Shine unleashed a 41-point finishing kick to erase a double-digit deficit and steal homecourt advantage in the series.

     

    Yet for Johnson, the performance had little to do with redemption or proving himself against Brownlee.

     

    His focus was much simpler.

    “It’s always fun. I love the fans. I love the crowd. This is what we’re doing it for, you feel me? Just having fun out there. They’re making it even better. Shout out to all the fans for sure,” he said.

     

    “Ginebra got all the fans though, they got it all man. Some of ya’ll come with us.”

     

    Still, Johnson knows one explosive night means very little against a franchise as dangerous as Ginebra.

     

    Especially when Brownlee is still on the other bench.

     

    “It wasn’t easy. Shoutout to them. They’re a hard team over there. We got to go back to the drawing board and prepare for Game 2,” Johnson said.

     

    “It’s gonna be even harder. It’s time to lock in. Rest our bodies and focus up. That’s a great team, we got to go back to the drawing board and do what we got to do.”

    Thompson was later seen leaving the venue with an ice pack wrapped around his head, immediately raising concerns about his availability moving forward in the series.

     

    As of now, no official update has been released regarding the severity of the injury, with the seven-time champion expected to be monitored closely ahead of the crucial Game 2 showdown at the Mall of Asia Arena.

    The frightening moment happened with 31.6 seconds left after Thompson absorbed an accidental hit from Jhonard Clarito’s heel while diving for a loose ball.

    The Elasto Painters escaped with a gritty 115-111 victory Wednesday night at the Ynares Center in Antipolo, stealing Game 1 of the best-of-seven series and immediately shifting pressure to the heavily favored Gin Kings.

     

    For Guiao, the result perfectly reflected the identity his team has embraced all conference long.

    “To play a team like Ginebra, [with a] GOAT import, GOAT coach, half of the Gilas team, the probable Best Player of the Conference in their team,” Guiao said, referring to Brownlee, coach Tim Cone and RJ Abarrientos.

     

    “And who are we? We just told the team to just put up a fight and see how far we can go. At least, we were able to get Game 1. We got lucky once, let’s see how many times we can get lucky. Let’s see.”

     

    But this no longer feels like simple luck.

     

    Rain or Shine has now beaten San Miguel Beer and drawn first blood against Ginebra in consecutive playoff rounds — two franchises that have long represented the league’s measuring stick in big games.

     

    Import Jaylen Johnson once again provided stability, while Clarito’s energy and Mamuyac’s timely contributions highlighted the depth that continues to fuel the Elasto Painters’ playoff run.

     

    More importantly, Rain or Shine once again showed it can stay mentally steady against teams loaded with stars.

     

    Game 2 now shifts to the Mall of Asia Arena on Friday, where the Elasto Painters expect an even tougher response from Ginebra.

     

    But after surviving one of the league’s biggest playoff stages, Rain or Shine suddenly looks far more dangerous than just another underdog story.

    Andrei Caracut nabs PBA Player of the Week after powering Rain or Shine past SMB 

    Andrei Caracut was often viewed as another reliable piece in Rain or Shine Elasto Painters’ deep rotation.

     

    Against San Miguel Beermen, he became the closer.

     

    With Rain or Shine trying to protect its lead against the defending Philippine Cup champions in a pressure-packed quarterfinal showdown, it was Caracut who stepped forward and delivered the shots that finally broke the Beermen’s resistance.

     

    The former La Salle standout exploded for 29 points built around six three-pointers and a rare four-point play, powering the Elasto Painters to a statement 113-104 victory at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.

     

    More importantly, the win finally pushed Rain or Shine back into the PBA Commissioner’s Cup semifinals after falling short in the previous Philippine Cup.

     

    And when San Miguel began threatening another trademark comeback after erasing much of a 12-point deficit, Caracut answered every challenge.

    The 28-year-old poured in 12 points in the fourth quarter alone, repeatedly halting the Beermen’s momentum and restoring control whenever the game started tilting dangerously close.

    That performance ultimately earned Caracut the unanimous selection as the PBA Press Corps Player of the Week for May 13 to 16.

     

    He edged out fellow semifinal heroes including RR Pogoy and Calvin Oftana of TNT Tropang 5G, as well as Chris Newsome of Meralco Bolts.

     

    But for Caracut, the outburst was less about individual brilliance and more about matching the effort of the teammates around him.

     

    “Inspired lang ako kasi syempre yung nagtatrabaho yung mga teammates ko, nakikita ko sila kung paano sila magtrabaho. Nakaka-inspire na ipanalo ‘yung game,” Caracut said.

     

    The timing of his breakout could not have been bigger for Rain or Shine.

    For much of the conference, the Elasto Painters built their identity around depth, pace, and collective effort rather than relying on a single star. Against a powerhouse like San Miguel, however, they needed someone willing to take over late.

     

    Caracut answered that call — and in the process, delivered one of the biggest playoff performances of his career.

    TNT faces different Meralco test as Bol Bol, Tropang 5G chase return to Finals 

    For TNT, the semifinals are starting to feel familiar. The Tropang 5G are back in the Final Four for yet another conference, once again carrying championship expectations and once again staring at Meralco on the other side of the bracket.

     

    But while TNT enters the PBA Commissioner’s Cup semifinals as the defending champion and slight favorite, the feeling around the matchup is far from comfortable.

     

    Not after the way Meralco has evolved into one of the league’s most complete and disciplined teams.

     

    Not after the Bolts handed TNT one of its most convincing losses of the eliminations.

     

    And definitely not after the way Meralco survived its own playoff war just to get here.

     

    “Obviously, they are deserving to make the finals and they are hard to beat in a seven-game series,” acknowledged Meralco coach Luigi Trillo. “But with the way we are playing we deserve to be there, too.”

     

    That confidence did not come out of nowhere.

     

    Meralco had to grind through a tense quarterfinal series against Magnolia, eventually escaping with a 105-102 overtime win in the knockout game to punch its ticket back to the semifinals.

     

    The Bolts leaned on composure, physicality, and timely execution — the same formula they hope can finally crack TNT in a long playoff series.

     

    Across the floor stands a TNT squad that also had to survive adversity.

     

    The Tropang 5G dropped their first quarterfinal meeting against NLEX before regrouping behind Bol Manute Bol and their veteran core to complete the comeback and keep their title defense alive.

    Now, the challenge becomes even steeper.

     

    TNT coach Chot Reyes admitted this version of Meralco looks far tougher than the team they disposed of in five games during the Philippine Cup semifinals last conference.

     

    “That’s a complete team. They’re playing at a very high level. If you remember in our elimination round game tinambakan kami ng Meralco, right?” Reyes said.

     

    Back in April, Meralco stunned TNT with a 110-106 victory after leading by as many as 20 points — a game that exposed just how dangerous the Bolts can be when they dictate the pace and physicality.

     

    For Reyes, that game remains an important reminder entering the series.

     

    “They have so many offensive weapons that it’s incumbent upon us to, number one, defend well and rebound. They’re also one of the more physical teams in the league and you see how teams are playing Bol,” he added.

     

    “So, we have to be able to cope with that and play through that.”

     

    That may ultimately decide the series.

     

    Because while Bol continues to draw attention as TNT’s towering centerpiece, Meralco’s ability to crowd him, pressure the locals, and turn games into physical battles could once again test the composure of the defending champions.

     

    And this time, the Bolts are no longer simply hoping to compete with TNT. They fully believe they belong beside them.
