    For Titan Ultra, the turnaround didn’t begin with tactics—it began with a message. New head coach Rensy Bajar challenged his players to look inward, to rediscover something deeper than schemes and adjustments. Against the defending champions San Miguel Beermen, that challenge finally translated into something tangible—a stunning 119-112 victory in the Philippine Basketball Association Commissioner’s Cup at the Ynares Center.

     

    Coming off two demoralizing losses by an average of 30.5 points, the Giant Risers entered the game with little external expectation. Internally, however, the tone had already been set.

     

    “Challenge lang namin siguro, especially sa akin challenge ko sa mga players, have some pride. Number one on their jobs, on this team, because this Titan team can beat anybody,” related Bajar, still an assistant when SMB gave Titan a 41-point beatdown in the last Philippine Cup.

     

    That belief showed from the opening stretch, as Titan Ultra dictated pace and attacked with confidence. Joshua Munzon led the charge with 29 points, while import Michael Gilmore battled through foul trouble to deliver 28 points and 13 rebounds. More than the numbers, though, it was the team’s collective poise that stood out, especially when momentum began to shift.

     

    After falling behind by as much as 21, San Miguel clawed its way back into the contest, trimming the deficit to just four points twice in the fourth quarter. Each time the Beermen threatened, Titan responded with timely execution. Munzon delivered seven of his 11 fourth-quarter points in the final 5:54, steadying the team and keeping control within reach.

    Bajar believed the opportunity had always been there—his team simply needed to recognize and seize it.

     

    “So ang gameplan lang namin, since San Miguel is coming off a championship last conference siguro medyo nasa cloud nine pa sila tsaka at the same time medyo kumbaga baka hindi pa nila kami sineryoso,” added Bajar. “So iyun nga, tinake advantage lang namin ‘yung opportunity that San Miguel gave us.”

     

    For Munzon, the result was not just about pulling off an upset, but about proving a point.

     

    “We just wanted to show that we could compete,” said Munzon. “Tonight we showed that we could compete in this league and we could compete against anybody.”

     

    On the other side, San Miguel looked far from the dominant squad that ruled the previous conference. Turnovers disrupted their rhythm, committing 21 overall, while cold shooting in the first half left them chasing the game early. Import Marcus Lee struggled throughout, finishing with just four points on 1-of-4 shooting, forcing the Beermen to rely on an all-Filipino lineup down the stretch.

     

    CJ Perez tried to spark a comeback with 27 points after a quiet start, while Don Trollano added 21. Mo Tautuaa and June Mar Fajardo contributed 18 and 15 points, respectively, with Fajardo also hauling down 17 rebounds. Still, the damage had already been done, particularly during Titan’s explosive 41-point third quarter that created the cushion they would ultimately protect.

     

    For Titan Ultra, the victory carried meaning beyond the final score. It was a response to their early struggles, a rejection of the narrative built around their lopsided losses, and, most importantly, an answer to their coach’s challenge.     The Philippine Basketball Association wasted little time drawing the line.

     

    Less than 24 hours after tensions boiled over at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, the league handed down sanctions to Glenn Khobuntin and Jaylen Johnson, whose physical altercation disrupted an otherwise tightly contested Commissioner’s Cup matchup.

     

    Khobuntin of the TNT Tropang 5G was met with a heavier penalty—a two-game suspension along with a P70,000 fine—while Rain or Shine Elasto Painters import Johnson received a one-game ban and a P50,000 fine.

     

    The penalties stemmed from a heated sequence late in the fourth quarter of Rain or Shine’s 112-109 victory, when what began as routine physical play quickly escalated. With just over six minutes remaining, the two players got tangled while battling for position—seconds later, they were on the floor exchanging punches in a moment that stunned both teams and the crowd.

     

    League commissioner Willie Marcial called both players in the following day, where they reportedly expressed regret over the incident. Still, the league made it clear that such actions would not be taken lightly.

     

    “That’s like firing a gun. After that, you’ll end up regretting it,” Marcial said on Khobuntin’s case, as quoted in the PBA website which announced the sanctions.

     

    The consequences are immediate. Khobuntin will miss TNT’s upcoming games, including their clash against NLEX Road Warriors and a marquee showdown with San Miguel Beermen. Johnson, meanwhile, will sit out Rain or Shine’s next assignment against the Meralco Bolts.

    What made the incident more jarring was its suddenness. There had been no prior signs of animosity between the two, making the eruption all the more unexpected in a game that had otherwise been defined by execution and intensity.

    “Jaylen Johnson was a quiet player in the KBL, but he met with a rather dirty Filipino player to show UFC scenes,” said baekpd1983 on X. “In all sports, I think consideration for the opponent is important.”

    The Magnolia Hotshots are still searching for answers after a difficult start to the ongoing Philippine Basketball Association Commissioner’s Cup, dropping their first three games to remain winless in the tournament.

     

    Magnolia’s struggles continued on Sunday, March 22, as they absorbed a 97–91 defeat at the hands of the Blackwater Bossing at the Ynares Center in Antipolo. The loss was particularly notable as it marked Magnolia’s first defeat to Blackwater since the 2021 Governors’ Cup, underscoring the team’s early-season woes and inconsistency on both ends of the floor.

     

    Despite the disappointing run, head coach LA Tenorio remains focused on the bigger picture, urging his players to stay patient as they adjust to a new system and continue to develop chemistry.

    “It was really a heartbreak. But again, I was telling the players to really just keep on fighting. A lot of work to do especially on, again, it’s like putting on a new system. Masyadong matagal ‘yung habits na meron sila. We just keep on working, telling the players to trust the process,” Tenorio said in the postmatch press conference.

     

    The former PBA star acknowledged that Magnolia is currently in a transition phase, fielding a relatively young core that is still learning how to navigate high-pressure situations, particularly late in games. While the results have yet to follow, Tenorio expressed confidence that the team’s commitment to improvement will eventually pay dividends.

     

    “We might not win this conference, may mga ganung bagay ‘yan, but down the road, we are going to get our share of wins as long as we continue on working and staying positive about it. I want the players to stay positive all the time. We are really working hard in practice, no doubt. The thing is, siyempre, we have to translate it in the game. ‘Yung young team na ‘to, a lot of things that we need not only physically but mentally as well.

    “They have to learn how to play down the stretch. This is a young team so what do you expect? What I like with this team is they work hard everyday. They are willing to learn. They are willing to get better every day. They are listening,” he added.

     

    Through three games, Magnolia has shown flashes of competitiveness but has struggled to sustain momentum, particularly in crunch time where execution and decision-making have proven costly. Defensive lapses and inconsistent support from the local core have also hampered their ability to close out tight contests.

     

    One bright spot, however, has been the stellar play of import Nuni Omot, who delivered an all-around performance in the loss with 38 points, seven rebounds, and nine assists. Omot has been a consistent offensive engine for Magnolia, showcasing his ability to score from multiple levels while also creating opportunities for his teammates.

     

    Still, Tenorio emphasized that the team cannot rely solely on its import, calling on the local players to step up and contribute in meaningful ways.

     

    “We are playing good basketball because of our import. So what is happening to us is not all about the import. That’s what I’m telling my players. It’s still the locals. They have to share doing the little things for the imports,” Tenorio concluded.

     

    As the losses pile up, Magnolia finds itself in urgent need of a turnaround to keep its playoff hopes alive. The team will look to regroup during a short break, using the time to refine its system, build cohesion, and address key weaknesses on both ends of the court.

     

    The Hotshots return to action on Saturday, March 28, when they take on guest team Macau Black Knights at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.     Rain or Shine, under the guidance of veteran coach Yeng Guiao, is set to face off against TNT Tropang Giga and their towering import Bol Bol this Friday, March 20, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. 

     

    The Elasto Painters come off a solid 116-109 win against the Macau Black Knights in their season opener of the PBA 50th Season Philippine Cup.

     

    Coach Guiao acknowledges TNT’s potential advantage, having scouted Rain or Shine’s first match and with the presence of Bol Bol, a towering import making his first overseas stint after playing for three NBA teams between 2019 and 2025.

     

    “Playing TNT and not having seen them play with Bol Bol, I think, gives them some sort of an advantage. They’ve seen us play now,” Guiao said. 

     

    “But at the same time, we also look at it as an advantage on our part for them to be playing their first game because I’m sure there’s going to be some adjustments on their part also,” he added.

     

    While TNT may have had the chance to study Rain or Shine in their opener, Guiao sees a potential edge in Bol Bol still adjusting to the pace and style of the PBA. 

     

    “I’m sure Bol Bol is going to be feeling out the game and making some adjustments. That might be an advantage for us, him not being able to familiarize and acclimatize himself with the local game,” the 66-year-old veteran coach noted.
