    Governors’ Cup imports face defining stretch as Magnolia, Ginebra chase much-needed momentum 

    The spotlight may fall on the imports Friday night, but for Magnolia and Barangay Ginebra, winning will depend on far more than foreign firepower.

     

    As the PBA Season 50 Governors’ Cup heads to the SM Mall of Asia Arena, two of the league’s most popular franchises enter pivotal matchups searching for consistency after uneven starts to the conference.

     

    Magnolia opens the twin bill against Rain or Shine, while Barangay Ginebra renews its rivalry with Meralco in the featured showdown.

     

    For the Hotshots, head coach LA Tenorio believes import KJ Buffen doesn’t have to carry the burden alone.

     

    Magnolia finally snapped its 0-2 start by defeating Meralco, 112-98, behind another productive outing from Buffen, who finished with 26 points. But what pleased Tenorio even more was how the locals took over in the second half, allowing Buffen to focus on rebounding, defense, and making winning plays.

     

    That balanced attack is exactly what Tenorio wants moving forward.

     

    Having spent more than a decade alongside Justin Brownlee during Ginebra’s dynasty, Tenorio knows even the league’s greatest imports relied heavily on their teammates.

     

    “As good as Justin Brownlee is… I’ve been with him for so many years, the support of the locals talaga ang naging success nu’ng run namin na iyon. He’s really good, but I was telling them Justin is good because of the support of the locals also,” narrated Tenorio.

     

    Rather than expecting Buffen to replicate Brownlee’s accomplishments, the Magnolia mentor has been impressed by the import’s willingness to grow with the team.

     

    “Ang maganda rin kasi sa kanya he’s learning also and at the same time na buong team natututo dahil sa mga bata kong mga players,” the coach said.

     

    “But he’s been really working hard with the team, he listens to the locals. I think ‘yun ‘yung importante, very good attitude towards the game and he accepts ‘yung mga mistakes. So I think ‘yun ‘yung importante and for me that’s what we need in this team.

     

    “He’s not a leader per se, but by doing that parang ni-li-lead niya rin ‘yung team namin, eh.”

    The Elasto Painters have rebounded from an 0-2 start, and head coach Yeng Guiao credits the team’s renewed commitment on the defensive end.

     

    “I think it’s a wakeup call. After that we’ve been playing better defense saka better rebounding,” Guiao pointed out.

     

    “Hindi ako worried about our offense, eh. I think we’ve scored more than 100 points every game. So it’s really just playing good defense, rebounding. When we get our rebounds, we’re able to run.

    “So itong mga bata, nag-focus lang sila doon sa mga bagay na dapat naming gawin kaya siguro nakabawi kami.”

    Perry quickly responded, knocking down a running jumper with 44.6 seconds left to even the score at 92-all and set the stage for Macau’s defining sequence.

    Chongqui delivered one of his best performances of the conference, earning Player of the Game honors after finishing with 29 points, three assists, and three steals, while Lam contributed 12 points, including the game’s biggest basket.

     

    The victory carried even more significance considering both Perry and Chongqui battled through injuries. Perry has been nursing a shoulder issue, while Chongqui has been dealing with a thigh injury, making Macau’s gritty performance even more impressive.

     

    “I just appreciate them for being tough-minded, gritty, and helping us get that win,” Macau coach Marcus Elliott said.

     

    With consecutive victories finally providing momentum, the Giant Pandas now turn their attention to Tuesday, August 4, when they take on Titan Ultra at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium, hoping to extend their winning streak and continue climbing the Group A standings.

    The loss dropped Converge to its second defeat of the conference, but despite the disappointing result, the FiberXers found a major positive in the return of veteran import Jamaal Franklin, who made an immediate impact in his second stint with the franchise.

     

    Franklin wasted little time reminding everyone why Converge brought him back, finishing with 30 points in his season debut while providing stability on both ends of the floor. His all-around performance kept the FiberXers within striking distance against the defending champions, although it ultimately wasn’t enough to prevent TNT from escaping with the victory.

    The 35-year-old American is no stranger to Converge fans. He first joined the FiberXers during the 2023 Governors’ Cup and quickly established himself as one of the league’s premier imports.     “I mean, this was my first home playing out here. It was cut short, it was just some stuff that happened. But happy to be back, and just gotta keep going at it, and we just got to get better and hopefully get on the winning circle again,” Franklin said after the game.

     

    Franklin was tapped to replace fellow import Jalen Hudson, whose inconsistent performances during the early stages of the conference prompted the team’s management to make a change. While there is still work to be done as Converge adjusts to its new lineup, Franklin believes the team’s potential will become more evident as they spend more time together.

     

    The former NBA and international veteran also spoke highly of his teammates, particularly the players he already knew from his previous stint with the club.

     

    “Alec and Justin are my guys, I have known them since my first time here. And I played against Mikey, he’s one hell of a player, he can score the ball, he’s one of the best scorers in this league. So it’s always good playing with a guy like Mikey. He’s a good scorer, he’s keeping composure, he practices hard. So just happy to have him on our side now, and happy to have the players we have right now.”

     

    Franklin’s familiarity with several members of the roster could prove valuable as Converge looks to quickly build chemistry and bounce back from its slow start. His veteran leadership and scoring ability are expected to ease the offensive burden on the FiberXers while providing a reliable presence in crucial stretches of games.

     

    Despite the loss to TNT, Converge showed flashes of competitiveness against one of the league’s top contenders, giving the team optimism that better performances are on the horizon with Franklin back in the fold.

     

    The FiberXers will have an opportunity to return to the win column when they take on the NLEX Road Warriors at the SM Mall of Asia Arena on Saturday, August 1.     The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) recently announced the first list of candidates for Gilas Pilipinas, with Barefield among the 30 players named as part of the preliminary pool. The versatile guard, however, revealed that he only learned about his inclusion after SBP executive director Erika Dy mentioned his name during her appearance at the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Forum on Tuesday, July 28.

     

    Barefield welcomed the development, saying the chance to represent the country in a major international competition would be a significant milestone in his career.

However, the 2026 Asian Games follow different rules, with athletes only required to hold a Philippine passport to be eligible to compete.

    That distinction opens the door for Barefield to potentially make his national team debut in Nagoya, giving him the opportunity to share the court with some of the country’s top basketball talents while representing the Philippines on one of Asia’s biggest sporting stages.

     

    Barefield’s basketball journey has taken him across different levels and countries, building a résumé that includes experiences in some of the world’s competitive basketball leagues.     The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) could soon bring its biggest games to Cebu after Commissioner Willie Marcial revealed that the league is exploring the possibility of staging games—and potentially even the finals of the ongoing 2026 Governors’ Cup—at the newly inaugurated SM Seaside Cebu Arena.

     

    Marcial made the revelation after attending the grand opening of the state-of-the-art facility, which is now regarded as the largest indoor arena in the Visayas. The venue, reportedly built at a cost of around PHP 7 billion, is expected to become one of the country’s premier destinations for major sporting events, concerts, and entertainment spectacles.

     

    Located within the expansive SM Seaside City Cebu complex, the seven-story arena boasts a seating capacity of approximately 16,000 for sporting events, with the ability to accommodate up to 25,000 spectators depending on the event configuration. The venue also features modern amenities, spacious locker rooms, athlete support facilities, and a dedicated practice court, making it well-equipped to host high-profile basketball tournaments.

    Marcial admitted that he was impressed after touring the facility and said the league is seriously considering bringing PBA games to Cebu as early as the ongoing Governors’ Cup.

    “Sobrang laki at sobrang ganda. Balak talaga natin maglaro dun. Tingnan natin kung kakayanin sa finals. Kung hindi naman, pwedeng next season na. Malaki yung dugout and locker area. At may practice court siya,” Marcial told reporters.

     

    His comments have fueled excitement among basketball fans in Cebu, a province widely regarded as one of the country’s strongest basketball hotbeds. The PBA has long enjoyed passionate support whenever it stages out-of-town games in Cebu, and the opening of a world-class arena provides the league with an opportunity to bring marquee matchups to a larger audience outside Metro Manila.

    After struggling to find consistency following his trade from Rain or Shine, Mamuyac delivered his most productive outing in a Phoenix uniform, scoring 18 points and adding two rebounds in the Fuel Masters’ 102-92 victory over the Blackwater Bossing on Tuesday in the PBA Season 50 Governors’ Cup.

     

    The breakout performance arrived at a crucial moment for both player and team.     Scottie Thompson has made a career out of thriving under pressure inside packed basketball arenas, but the Barangay Ginebra star recently found himself in a completely different spotlight—one that, according to him, proved even more nerve-racking than competing in a PBA game.


    Still recovering from the hamstring injury that has kept him out of the PBA Season 50 Governors’ Cup, Thompson traded the basketball court for the judges’ table as one of the members of the panel for the 2026 Binibining Pilipinas pageant on July 18.

     

    For the former PBA Most Valuable Player, evaluating beauty queens was an entirely different challenge.

     

    “Mas nakakakaba ‘yung pag-judge ng pageant kaysa maglaro,” Thompson said.

     

    Thompson joined an accomplished panel that featured Miss Universe 1969 Gloria Diaz, Miss International 2005 Precious Lara-Quigaman, Senator Risa Hontiveros, and other distinguished personalities, making the invitation one of the most unique off-court experiences of his career.

     

    Ironically, the appearance almost never happened. Thompson admitted he initially hesitated to accept the invitation, but it was his wife, Jinky, who encouraged him to take on the opportunity.

    While he continues making public appearances away from basketball, Thompson’s primary focus remains returning to the court.

     

    The 33-year-old has yet to resume practice with Barangay Ginebra after sustaining a hamstring injury during the PBA Season 50 Commissioner’s Cup playoffs.

    The injury worsened as he continued to play through the championship series against TNT Tropang 5G, where he eventually earned Finals MVP honors despite the physical setback.

     

    “Wala pa, wala pa. It’s all recovery, strengthening and rehab,” he said.

     

    Without Thompson, Ginebra has encountered early challenges in the Governors’ Cup. The Gin Kings slipped to a 1-2 record following a 110-99 loss to the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters and currently occupy fifth place in Group B, tied with the Magnolia Hotshots.

     

    Despite watching from the sidelines, Thompson remains confident that Ginebra has enough leadership and experience to weather his absence until he is medically cleared to return.

     

    “We all know we struggle right now. But as the game goes on, for sure there’s a lot of veterans sa amin that’s gonna step up sa next game. Sa guards namin, the veterans they know what to do,” he said.

     

    For now, Thompson’s role is to support the team while continuing his rehabilitation program, hoping to regain full fitness before rejoining the Gin Kings later in the conference.

     

    Ginebra, meanwhile, will look to climb the Group B standings when it takes on the Meralco Bolts on Friday at the Mall of Asia Arena, with the team aiming to bounce back while one of its most influential players continues his recovery.
