    Terrafirma Dyip may be winless after two games in the PBA Season 50 Governors’ Cup, but head coach Ronald Tubid sees a team that has already shown it can compete.

     

    The problem, according to the veteran mentor, is that Terrafirma continues to put itself in difficult situations by waiting too long before showing its best basketball.

     

    The Dyip absorbed another heartbreaking setback on Wednesday, falling to the Converge FiberXers, 105-103, just days after opening their campaign with a 101-100 loss to NLEX. Both defeats came down to the final possessions, leaving Terrafirma searching for answers despite showing the ability to battle against stronger opponents.

     

    Against Converge, the Dyip found themselves trailing by double digits before mounting a furious comeback in the closing minutes. A 7-0 surge, highlighted by a Juami Tiongson three-pointer with just over a minute remaining, gave Terrafirma a chance to steal the game, but the FiberXers managed to survive the late scare.


    While the result added another loss to their record, Tubid focused on the positives, particularly his team’s resilience and belief that it can match up with the league’s best.

     

    “Sobrang maganda yun eh, yung culture na kaya. Kaya pala makipag-compete and may chance manalo. So lesson learned na hindi dapat yung laro pang third quarter or fourth quarter yung habol. Kailangan pag first quarter palang, ratsada na. Once we keep it close, may chance kami manalo,” he said.

    For the nine-time PBA champion, the challenge now is turning that fighting spirit into a complete 48-minute effort. 

     

    Terrafirma has repeatedly shown it can recover from difficult positions, but digging out of large holes has made their path to victory much harder.

     

    “Like last game, kailangan namin mag-compete from first quarter to fourth quarter. Kasi second quarter, third quarter natatambakan kami. So kailangan namin maghabol so parang ang hirap,” Tubid said.

     

    “What’s better siguro sabi namin sa players, all we know is kaya naman natin eh. We play our A game every game. Pero no need to wait for third quarter kasi mahirap eh,” he added.

     

    The Dyip’s slow starts have become their biggest obstacle, especially in a conference where every possession matters and early deficits can quickly become difficult to erase. Tubid believes the same confidence his players display during their comeback attempts must appear from the opening tip.

     

    Despite the 0-2 record, Terrafirma remains encouraged by the fact that its losses have been decided by only a combined three points. The team now hopes to turn those near-misses into lessons as it prepares for an even tougher challenge against one of the league’s powerhouse squads.

     

    “Back to the drawing board again, back to zero against San Miguel. Hopefully hindi kami matambakan ulit bago mahabol,” he said.

     

    Terrafirma will look to secure its first win of the conference when it faces the San Miguel Beermen on Saturday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.

    The Fuel Masters looked headed for a comfortable win after racing to a commanding 37-22 advantage in the opening period. But instead of cruising, they found themselves in a tense finish as the Bolts slowly chipped away at the deficit and even grabbed control in the closing minutes.

    With the game hanging in the balance, Kenneth Tuffin stepped into the spotlight.

     

    The left-handed forward calmly knocked down two pressure-filled free throws with 13.4 seconds remaining to put Phoenix ahead, 98-97. From there, the Fuel Masters’ defense delivered when it mattered most, forcing CJ Cansino into a difficult layup attempt that failed to drop with under five seconds left.

     

    Jason Perkins secured the defensive rebound before tossing the ball away as the final buzzer sounded, triggering celebrations from the Phoenix bench after narrowly avoiding a collapse.

     

    Tuffin earned Player of the Game honors after finishing with 17 points and seven rebounds, while Perkins contributed 13 points and six boards in another balanced effort for Phoenix.

     

    The Fuel Masters improved to a spotless 2-0 record in Group B and now shift their attention to a highly anticipated showdown against Barangay Ginebra on Sunday, where they will look to stretch their unbeaten start.

    Meralco, despite playing without an import, pushed Phoenix to the limit after a determined comeback led by several key contributors.

     

    Cansino paced the Bolts with 18 points, while Allein Maliksi erupted for 16 points. Fifteen of Maliksi’s points came in the second quarter, helping Meralco erase much of the early 15-point deficit.

     

    Brandon Bates controlled the paint with a double-double of 14 points and 15 rebounds, while veterans Cliff Hodge and Raymond Almazan added 13 and 10 points, respectively.

     

    The Bolts appeared poised to steal the game when Bates split his free throws with 1:19 left, giving Meralco a 97-94 lead. However, the missed second attempt proved costly as Phoenix answered through trips to the foul line by Tuffin and import Johnson, while the defense strung together critical stops, including two defensive stands against Chris Newsome.

     

    The defining sequence came on Meralco’s final possession, with Cansino attempting a high-banked layup for the lead that bounced away, allowing Phoenix to escape with the victory.

     

    “This is a game where somehow we got lucky with Meralco not having an import, and we didn’t want to let it slip away,” said Tiu.

     

    Phoenix now prepares for a marquee clash against reigning Season 50 Commissioner’s Cup champion Barangay Ginebra on July 19 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, aiming to remain unbeaten through three games.

     

    Meanwhile, Meralco will continue its search for its first victory of the conference when it takes on Rain or Shine this Saturday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo, where replacement import Antonio Hester is expected to make his debut.

    The Meralco Bolts opened their 2026 Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Governors’ Cup campaign on a disappointing note after absorbing a heartbreaking 98-97 defeat at the hands of the Phoenix Fuel Masters at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Wednesday, July 15.

     

    Already facing an uphill battle before tip-off, the Bolts were forced to play without an import after original reinforcement Jordon Varnado was ruled out because of a hamstring injury. Despite the setback, Meralco’s All-Filipino lineup refused to back down, showing resilience throughout the contest and nearly pulling off a remarkable comeback after trailing by as many as 15 points.

     

    The Bolts gradually chipped away at Phoenix’s advantage behind a determined collective effort from their local core, putting themselves within striking distance in the closing minutes. However, the Fuel Masters managed to hold their composure in the final stretch, escaping with a narrow one-point victory and handing Meralco an unfortunate start to its title campaign.

    With the team left without an import for its opening assignment, Meralco management wasted little time addressing the situation. Bolts team manager Paolo Trillo confirmed after the game that the club has tapped veteran import Antonio Hester as a temporary replacement while Varnado recovers.

     

    “Our import Jordon’s dealing with a minor injury. So we got a reserve coming in, si Antonio Hester. We wanted someone, kasi it’s mabilisan lang, so we wanted someone who’s a bit familiar with our league also. He was available naman,” Trillo said.

     

    Hester’s arrival gives Meralco an experienced and familiar reinforcement capable of stepping in immediately. The American has built an impressive résumé in Philippine basketball over the past several years, making him one of the more recognizable imports available on short notice.

    He first suited up in the PBA for the Terrafirma Dyip during the 2021-22 Governors’ Cup, where he established himself as a reliable frontcourt presence. Hester later joined the Magnolia Hotshots for the 2023 Governors’ Cup before returning to Terrafirma in 2024. Outside the PBA, he also represented the Zamboanga Valientes in the ASEAN Basketball League, further strengthening his ties to Philippine basketball.

     

    Interestingly, Hester is no stranger to the Meralco organization either. He previously reinforced the Bolts during the 2025 Basketball Champions League Asia tournament in Dubai, giving him familiarity with the team’s system and several members of the current roster. That previous stint is expected to help ease his transition as Meralco looks to quickly bounce back from its opening-game setback.

     

    While Hester has been signed to fill the immediate void, Trillo emphasized that the move does not signal the end of Varnado’s stint with the team. According to the Bolts manager, Varnado’s injury is considered minor, and the organization remains committed to bringing him back once he has fully recovered.

     

    “We are putting him in the reserves first for now. It’s a minor injury eh, so I don’t know how many days. He’s day-to-day. But we need an import. Hopefully. It’s not a major injury. It’s just a muscle strain. So the doctors already saw it. Of course, those types of injuries, you never know. And if we force playing him, it could get worse. That would be more long-term. We are just trying to manage his injury now,” he added.

     

    Trillo’s comments underscore the team’s cautious approach to Varnado’s rehabilitation. Rather than rushing the import back into action and risking a more serious setback, the Bolts opted to secure a capable replacement while allowing the medical staff to closely monitor his recovery on a day-to-day basis.

     

    Hester is expected to arrive in Manila on Thursday, July 16, giving him limited time to acclimate before Meralco’s next assignment. Barring any unforeseen complications, the veteran import is expected to make his debut for the Bolts when they face the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters on Saturday, July 18, at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.

     

    With an experienced reinforcement set to join the squad and Varnado still part of the team’s long-term plans, Meralco hopes to quickly regroup and notch its first victory of the conference after an opening-night defeat that showed both the challenges and resilience of its All-Filipino lineup.

    A familiar face will headline Meralco’s opening act in the PBA Season 50 Governors’ Cup.


    After helping the Bolts compete in the Basketball Champions League Asia earlier this year, Jordon Varnado now takes center stage in the import-laden conference as Meralco opens its campaign against Phoenix Super LPG on Wednesday at the SMART Araneta Coliseum.

     

    Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m., with the Bolts hoping their strategy of bringing back a proven reinforcement once again pays dividends.

     

    Rather than gambling on an unfamiliar import, Meralco turned to a player who already understands the team’s system after Varnado played a key role during the club’s run to the quarterfinals of the Basketball Champions League Asia 2025.

     

    The athletic forward averaged 19.7 points and 10.0 rebounds in that tournament, making him one of the Bolts’ most consistent performers against top international competition.

    The narrow defeat also served as an early sign that Terrafirma could be more competitive than its record suggests.

     

    After enduring a collapse in the Commissioner’s Cup, where the Dyip lost eight of their final nine games following a promising 3-0 start, the franchise is determined to avoid another downward spiral and prove it can compete with one of the conference’s early pacesetters.

    Schonny Winston continues to reward NLEX’s faith in him, and on Tuesday, the Fil-Am guard delivered the finest offensive performance of his PBA career.


    Winston erupted for a career-high 30 points to power the Road Warriors to a commanding 135-100 victory over Titan Ultra at the Ynares Sports Center in Montalban, keeping NLEX unbeaten through three games in the PBA Governors’ Cup.

     

    The 6-foot-4 guard was nearly unstoppable, knocking down 12 of his 18 attempts from the field while flirting with a double-double by adding nine rebounds and six assists. 

     

    His scoring outburst surpassed his previous PBA career best of 26 points, which came in Converge’s 114-100 victory over San Miguel during the 2024 Governors’ Cup quarterfinals, according to PBA chief statistician Fidel Mangonon III.

     

    While the new milestone highlighted another strong start to his NLEX stint, Winston immediately dedicated the performance to someone special.

     

    “It feels good. It’s my mom’s birthday. So shout out to my mom. She watched every game. So that’s for my mom,” he said.

     

    Since being acquired in a three-team trade involving Converge and Meralco, Winston has developed into a dependable offensive partner for Robert Bolick, giving the Road Warriors another consistent scoring threat as they chase a strong conference campaign.

    The 28-year-old has also embraced the team’s transition under new head coach Jimmy Alapag, with NLEX opening the tournament at 3-0.

     

    “We’re 3-0 right now, so we can’t complain,” he said. “We just have to keep on pushing, keep on getting better every game.”

     

    Playing under one of the PBA’s greatest point guards has also left a strong impression on Winston.

     

    “He’s a legend. Everyone knows who he is. He’s a winner, champion leader. And his resume is so high,” he said about Alapag. 

     

    NLEX ensured Winston’s career night translated into a convincing victory by controlling the game from the opening quarter. The Road Warriors scored at least 30 points in every period—30 in the first, 31 in the second, 36 in the third, and 38 in the fourth—to complete the 35-point rout.

     

    Bolick once again orchestrated the offense alongside Winston, while import Daequan Jones contributed 22 points and six rebounds as NLEX strengthened its hold on the early Group A lead.

     

    Titan Ultra fell to 0-3 despite a 27-point, 10-rebound debut from import Tirrell Brown. Roi Sumang scored 18 points, while Joshua Munzon added 17 in the losing effort.

    NLEX’s unbeaten start to the PBA Season 50 Governors’ Cup isn’t just about hot shooting or impressive offensive numbers.

     

    For Robert Bolick, the Road Warriors’ early success has been built on something much deeper—a culture that first-year head coach Jimmy Alapag has established from the moment he took over the franchise.

     

    That winning environment continued to bear fruit on Tuesday as NLEX overwhelmed Titan Ultra, 135-100, at the Ynares Center in Antipolo to stretch its record to a league-best 3-0.

     

    Bolick once again spearheaded the attack, finishing with 29 points on an efficient 11-of-16 shooting while adding seven rebounds and four assists as the Road Warriors remained one of the conference’s hottest teams.

     

    While the numbers have been impressive, Bolick pointed to Alapag’s leadership as the biggest reason behind the team’s seamless start.

     

    “Una, siyempre legend na nga sa PBA, legend pa sa Gilas, may NBA experience,” Bolick said of his head coach after the game.

     

    “Ang laking confidence hindi lang para sa akin, kundi para sa team. Kami lang makakasabi na may NBA coach kami. Malaking bagay sa team namin ‘yan.”

     

    According to Bolick, Alapag’s influence extends well beyond X’s and O’s.

     

    Rather than focusing solely on basketball, the former Gilas Pilipinas captain made it a priority to strengthen the relationships inside the locker room, believing that genuine trust off the court would naturally carry over during games.

     

    “Unang pasok ni coach, gusto niya hindi kami as a team. Family-oriented gusto niya,” Bolick shared.

    For most shooters in the PBA, studying Marcio Lassiter means watching game film or admiring his highlights from afar.

     

    Jerrick Ahanmisi now gets something even better.

     

    After years of looking up to the league’s all-time leader in three-pointers, the newest San Miguel Beermen guard now shares the same locker room with the player he considers a role model, turning admiration into a daily learning opportunity.

     

    Ahanmisi wasted little time making an impact, scoring 16 points with four rebounds and four assists in San Miguel’s convincing 123-109 victory over guest team Macau in its PBA Season 50 Governors’ Cup opener on Tuesday.

     

    Despite the encouraging debut, the former Terrafirma guard believes his biggest gain may come away from the stat sheet.

     

    “I’m super honored. Super blessed,” Ahanmisi said of playing alongside Lassiter.

    “Because he’s the best three-point shooter in the league right now, right? It’s just something for me to keep learning on.”

     

    Their connection as elite marksmen dates back to the PBA All-Star festivities in Candon earlier this year.

     

    The two battled for the Three-Point Shootout crown, with Lassiter appearing headed for another title after posting 25 points before Ahanmisi caught fire in the final round, draining 30 to steal the championship and complete a double victory after winning the Obstacle Challenge.

     

    Even after defeating his idol, Ahanmisi never hid the respect he has for the veteran sniper.

     

    “I look up to Marcio all the time,” the 28-year-old said after that contest.

     

    “Even before I came into the PBA, I looked up to him as a shooter, as a role model.”

    That admiration has now evolved into a mentorship following his offseason move to San Miguel.

    The Beermen acquired Ahanmisi and Paolo Hernandez from Terrafirma in exchange for Juami Tiongson and Chris Miller, giving the former Adamson standout a chance to learn directly from one of the league’s greatest shooters.

     

    “I’m just gonna keep asking how he stayed that long, how he got to that record, how he’s number one, and hopefully I can follow in his footsteps,” he said.

     

    Still adjusting to his new surroundings, Ahanmisi admitted there’s plenty of room for improvement despite helping San Miguel open the conference with a victory.

     

    “I think I did pretty well. But there are always things that I can improve on,” he said.

     

    “So hopefully the next game will be a little bit better. I can be a little bit more efficient, too, in getting my own shots and learning from my teammates.”

     

    Fortunately for Ahanmisi, Lassiter isn’t the only veteran guiding him.

     

    Surrounded by championship winners like Chris Ross and June Mar Fajardo, the sharpshooter believes he has landed in the perfect environment to continue developing his game.

     

    “They’re all really cool,” Ahanmisi said.

     

    “I’m glad that I got them as my vets ’cause if I’m having trouble with anything or if I’m making mistakes, I can go up to them and ask them what’ going on or where I can be better at, and they’re really open to helping me out.”

     

    With one impressive debut behind him and experienced mentors around him, Ahanmisi hopes the lessons he learns in San Miguel will be be just as valuable as the points he scores.

    Leading the way for Blackwater was guard RK Ilagan, who delivered a remarkable performance in his first game back after spending nearly three months on the sidelines with a knee injury. The 29-year-old wasted little time reminding everyone of his value to the Bossing, finishing with 22 points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals in an all-around effort that helped power his team to an emphatic opening-day win.

     

    Beyond the numbers, Ilagan’s return provided Blackwater with much-needed energy and stability on both ends of the floor. He confidently attacked the defense, knocked down timely baskets, and made key plays that kept the Bossing in control throughout the contest.     Titan Ultra’s search for stability finally has an answer. After opening the PBA Season 50 Governor’s Cup without an import and absorbing two lopsided defeats, the Giant Risers are set to field reinforcement, Tirrell Brown for the first time after the American officially completed the league’s mandatory height measurement last Saturday.

     

    Brown was confirmed to be within the PBA’s 6-foot-6 import limit, clearing the final hurdle for his much-awaited debut when Titan Ultra takes on NLEX on Tuesday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.

     

    His arrival comes at a critical time for a squad still looking for its first victory of the conference. Titan Ultra stumbled out of the gates with a 113-100 loss to Terrafirma in its season opener before suffering an even tougher 105-74 defeat against Converge on Sunday.

     

    More than simply adding another scorer, Brown gives the Giant Risers the import’s presence they have been missing through the opening stretch of the tournament.

     

    The team initially explored another route by attempting to bring in James Milton, who was available to immediately join the club. However, the plan never materialized after Milton failed to secure the required FIBA clearance despite having the rest of his documentation in order.

     

    Brown’s own arrival had also been delayed—not because of his playing credentials—but due to paperwork. While he had already obtained his FIBA clearance upon reaching the Philippines, he still needed to complete his Immigration requirements, medical clearance and other league-related documents before becoming eligible.

    Faced with the possibility of entering a third straight game without an import, Titan Ultra weighed its options. League officials ultimately advised management against activating Milton without FIBA clearance, noting that the sanctions from FIBA would outweigh the PBA’s penalty.

     

    Brown’s approval ultimately saves Titan Ultra from incurring the P50,000 fine imposed on teams that compete without an import in three consecutive games under league rules.

     

    Now officially available, the 32-year-old brings a wealth of international experience accumulated across South America, where he has built the majority of his professional career.

     

    Brown has played for clubs in Colombia, Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Bolivia and Ecuador, suiting up for Caimanes del Llano, Centenario de Venado Tuerto, GEPU San Luis, Villa San Martin, Ameghino, Asociacion Mitre Tucuman, Quilmes de Mar del Plata, Deportivo Valdivia, ABA Ancud, Toros, Colon, Tabare, 25 de Agosto, Amistad, Kinwa and Barcelona.

     

    Before turning professional overseas, Brown suited up for Central Arkansas before finishing his collegiate career at Ouachita Baptist University.

     

    With their reinforcement finally in uniform, Titan Ultra hopes Brown’s debut marks the beginning of a turnaround after an opening week that has left the Giant Risers searching for answers.
