    Nxled’s rise this conference did not begin with a miracle run. It began with inheritance. When Petro Gazz opted to take a leave of absence from the 2026 PVL All-Filipino Conference, Nxled found itself in possession of something every young franchise hopes to build over time but rarely acquires overnight — a championship backbone.

    That may be the clearest difference in this Nxled team.For a franchise still searching for its first true breakthrough, it now has players who have already lived through the pressure that comes with title runs, sudden-death scenarios, and matches where one bad stretch can end everything.

     

    Brooke Van Sickle, Pablo, and MJ Phillips have all brought that pedigree into a team still trying to define itself, and in the process, Nxled has begun to look less like a rebuilding side and more like a group learning how to win in real time.

     

    Pablo said that transition has been intentional from the start. “When we joined Nxled under coach Ettore (Guidetti), we wanted to apply the things and experience we had with Petro Gazz. I feel that we’re playing and communicating better during crucial games. The leadership and ferocity in each of us come out naturally,” Pablo added.

    “I’m just excited to keep moving forward one step at a time,” Van Sickle said.

     

    “So, we just focused on ourselves and what we can improve on as a team. And how we can still stick together and play cohesively. So, we’re just doing a little, you know, fixing things within our side of the court,” she added.

    That sentiment echoed loudly after Creamline survived the Nxled Chameleons in a gripping five-set battle in the Premier Volleyball League — a match that many inside the court felt resembled the old Creamline–Petro Gazz Angels wars.

     

    Now wearing Nxled colors, former Angels standouts Brooke Van Sickle, Myla Pablo, MJ Phillips and Jonah Sabete brought the same intensity that once fueled some of the league’s most memorable showdowns.

     

    For Jema Galanza, the matchup stirred a mix of emotions — excitement, nerves, and the thrill of facing opponents who always push Creamline to its limits.

     

    “Ako, ang daming feelings,” Galanza admitted. “Excited na may kaba, na nacha-challenge kasi maganda silang kalaban. Sobrang ganda nilang kalaban — yung kailangan mong mag-isip, hindi ka lang basta papalo, hindi lang basta ipapasok. Alam mo ‘yon, kailangan mong mag-isip.”

     

    Creamline grabbed a 2-1 lead, but Nxled responded with a dominant fourth set to send the match into a winner-take-all fifth frame.

     

    When the pressure mounted, the Cool Smashers leaned on their experience to steady themselves and eventually pull away for the 25-16, 22-25, 25-21, 15-25, 15-10 victory.

     

    “Nacha-challenge din yung composure namin. And ngayon, yun talaga yung nagpanalo sa’min,” Galanza said.

     

    The veteran outside hitter delivered a strong all-around effort with 19 points, along with 10 excellent receptions and six excellent digs, taking home the Player of the Game in the clash.

    For Tots Carlos, the match also carried extra meaning.

    “Siguro like what I said kanina, more of excitement kasi nga ako personally, meron akong sariling goal and sariling reason going to the game,” The PVL Player of the Week Carlos shared.

     

    “Ako, natuwa ako na na-experience namin ‘yung ganong scenario na kasi nga sila coach, laging sinasabi na pag sumobra naman kami sa gigil, hindi makakatulong sa amin. Composure lang talaga, and ‘yun nga, trabaho lang.”

     

    The result ultimately reinforced what both Galanza and Carlos already knew.

     

    Even if the old Petro Gazz core now wears Nxled jerseys, the rivalry that once defined their matchups is still very much alive — only this time, it has simply taken on a new name.

    While the new season marks another chapter for the country’s top professional volleyball league, this year’s All-Filipino Conference will feature a reduced field of 10 teams. The downsized lineup follows the exit of the Chery Tiggo Crossovers in December last year and the Petro Gazz Angels, who announced earlier this month that they would be taking a leave of absence from league play.

     

    Despite the departure of two established franchises, PVL president Ricky Palou expressed confidence in the league’s stability and long-term growth, revealing that several companies have already shown interest in joining the competition.

    “Dalawa nga, Cebu-based. But we are not just gonna let them come in that easy. We have to also study what capabilities they have, will they be able to stay with the league for a longer period of time,” Palou said during the PVL’s press conference in Ortigas.

     

    Palou emphasized that while expansion remains a goal, the league is taking a cautious approach in evaluating potential new teams to ensure sustainability and competitive balance.

    “If they are financially capable of maintaining a team that long. Those are the things we are looking at right now. But there are applicants,” he added.

     

    According to Palou, should the evaluation process move smoothly, newly approved teams could begin competing as early as the next PVL conference, signaling the league’s openness to gradual expansion. He also clarified that the PVL continues to keep the door open for Petro Gazz, which recently captured the 2025 Reinforced Conference title before announcing its temporary exit.

     

    “They still want to be part of the league. So we are in talks with them on possible sponsorships. They are willing to still be involved in the activities of the league,” Palou continued.

     

    The PVL has seen multiple teams and franchises step away from the league since 2021, sparking ongoing discussions about the financial demands required to sustain a professional volleyball team. Rising operational costs—ranging from player salaries and coaching staff to logistics and marketing—have become a growing concern for team owners.

     

    Palou acknowledged these challenges and revealed that the league has been actively discussing ways to ease the financial burden on its member teams.

     

    “Internally, we have been discussing some issues on how we can do to actually help the teams. We know it is getting more expensive for the teams to keep up, keep their teams together. I understand teams are now spending like P60, P75-million a year in maintaining a team. To us, this is a concern. We’d like to have the teams reduce the expenses and right now we are in talks on how to do this,” he concluded.

     

    As the 2026 season begins, the PVL finds itself balancing growth with sustainability—aiming to preserve the league’s competitive level while ensuring that franchises are financially equipped for long-term participation. With discussions ongoing and potential new teams on the horizon, league officials remain optimistic that the PVL can continue to evolve while addressing the realities of operating a professional sports league in the country.

    “Walang sinabi na hindi pwede or pwede. I guess it’s an open thing. If we come back, we ask permission to come back again and join up,” Dichupa said.


     “We did not disband the team, technically. [It was a] leave of absence.”

     

    However, Petro Gazz’s return is not guaranteed. Any comeback would depend on the league’s stance and the PVL board’s approval — a process Dichupa acknowledged is still in motion.

    “Nothing final on that. When the time comes, I guess we’ll have to see what goes sa decision ng board,” he said.

    “I hope the fans continue to be supportive of our players, the ones who came from Petro Gazz, even though some of them have gone to other teams. Angels pa rin ‘yan kumbaga,” he said.

     

    For now, Petro Gazz is not disappearing from Philippine sports. The organization continues to support La Salle’s men’s basketball and men’s volleyball programs, keeping its presence alive even without a PVL team.

     

    Dichupa added that discussions with the PVL are ongoing, as the franchise explores ways to remain involved with the league while it considers a potential return to competition.

    The question now isn’t whether Petro Gazz is gone — but whether their hiatus is simply a pause before the next chapter.

    “As per my discussion with [PVL president] Ricky Palou, with the planned merger, definitely one team should only remain, whether it’s Nxled or Petro Gazz,” Liao said.

     

    “For the players whose team will disband, the players will all become free agents. All the other teams will be allowed to sign them in.”

     

    That ruling effectively dismantles the central premise of the proposed union, which many rival teams viewed as an attempt to preserve competitive balance internally while sidestepping normal player movement rules.     What began as a routine offseason realignment could soon evolve into one of the most divisive moments in recent PVL history.

     

    Plans involving Petro Gazz and Nxled joining forces ahead of the 2026 season have introduced a layer of uncertainty—and tension—into an already active offseason. Whether the arrangement is formally branded as a merger or framed under a different structure, the idea alone has stirred resistance from within league circles.

     

    SPIN.ph has learned that several teams are prepared to challenge the proposal if it is elevated to a vote, signaling that the issue may extend beyond roster construction and into questions of competitive integrity.

     

    Under the current framework being discussed, the consolidated squad would compete under the Nxled name. 

     

    Nxled head coach Ettore Guidetti is expected to remain at the helm, a scenario that would keep him in front of Petro Gazz’s championship-winning mentors Gary and Lisa Van Sickle—at least in terms of official hierarchy.

     

    Yet while the banner and head coach may remain unchanged, much of the operational backbone is projected to shift.

    A significant portion of the coaching and support staff is expected to come from Petro Gazz’s setup, which delivered back-to-back titles last season.
