The Philippines continues to strengthen its reputation as an emerging destination for international sporting events as it prepares to host the inaugural Philippine Junior International Series, a landmark badminton tournament scheduled from August 4 to 9 at Gameville Central Park in Mandaluyong City.

For PBAD secretary-general Shawntel Nicole Nieto, bringing the tournament to Philippine soil represents a defining achievement for the federation and a chance to showcase both the country’s organizational capabilities and the growing standard of local badminton.

 

“It’s one for the books. It’s really a defining moment because it’s the first,” Nieto said during a media interaction.

 

“We really wanted to host this because we want to showcase two things. We want to show that Filipino badminton, be it at senior or junior level, is world-class. The second thing is, we want to showcase what world-class badminton is. We want to show that to the public and to many junior players by hosting.”

 

Hosting an international junior event also provides valuable exposure for the country’s rising stars, many of whom have traditionally needed to compete abroad to gain experience against elite opposition. Instead, the Philippine contingent will now enjoy home-court advantage while facing talented players from across Asia and beyond.

The tournament is expected to serve as an important measuring stick for the country’s youth development program, allowing coaches and officials to assess how Filipino players compare with their international counterparts.

 

Smash Pilipinas head coach Philip Joper Escueta welcomed the opportunity, emphasizing that competing against quality foreign opposition is crucial to the continued development of the nation’s young shuttlers.

 

“I want to see them battle it out with the best junior teams of other countries. Gusto natin makita kung hanggang gaano kalayo yung madadala ng ating training, at kung ano pa yung kailangan i-improve,” Escueta said.

 

For Escueta and the coaching staff, the competition will offer valuable insights into the strengths and weaknesses of the country’s junior program, helping identify areas that require further attention as the Philippines continues to build its pipeline of future national team players.

 

Beyond the results on the court, PBAD officials believe the tournament could have a lasting impact on the sport’s popularity across the country.

 

Program director Kennie Ascuncio, a former national standout who, together with her brother Kennevic Ascuncio, starred during one of Philippine badminton’s most successful eras, believes bringing international competition to local courts will create opportunities that were previously unavailable to many aspiring athletes.

 

“Usually we send our juniors abroad, but this time we are bringing the competition here. Players from the provinces can now participate, and our coaches get to identify more talents,” Ascuncio explained.

 

By eliminating the financial burden associated with overseas tournaments, more promising players from different parts of the country will have the opportunity to compete on an international stage, while national coaches can widen their search for future stars.

 

The Philippine Junior International Series also provides local badminton fans with a rare chance to witness high-level junior competition firsthand, exposing young athletes and enthusiasts to the speed, skill, and intensity of international badminton.
