    For most players, Tuesday night at the Filoil EcoOil Centre was just another grind in the long stretch of the Premier Volleyball League season.

     

    For Eya Laure, it felt like a flashback — and a first — all at once.

     

    Across the net stood her sister, EJ Laure, no longer a teammate in the same huddle but a rival in different colors. When Choco Mucho Flying Titans outlasted Nxled Chameleons, 27-25, 28-26, 16-25, 25-19, the box score told a story of clutch scoring and momentum swings. But beyond the numbers was something more personal — two sisters tracing diverging paths that began side by side.

     

    “Actually, namimiss ko siya kasama,” said Eya following the win.

     

    “Pero iba pala yung feeling kapag kalaban ko siya. Kasi last na nakalaban ko siya, parang high school pa ako, tas college na, nagtu-tune up kami.”

     

    They had grown used to sharing the same goals, the same systems, even the same professional beginnings after college. Years of familiarity built an instinct that doesn’t fade just because the jerseys change.

     

    “Masaya lang ako, masaya ako na sabay kaming nakakapaglaro until now. Nakakatuwa kasi siyempre, parang pagka nakikita ko siyang pumapalo, alam ko na kaagad kung saan siya pupunta e,” said the Alas Pilipinas standout.

    With Choco Mucho staring at a 9-15 deficit in the fourth set, Eya flipped the switch.     “Parang gano’n, sabi ko, gano’n ako ka-familiar sa ate ko. Na-miss ko rin kasi, siyempre, last namin, last kaming nagkasama, is last year? Last, last year. So ayun, parang iba lang yung feeling na ate mo yung kalaban mo,” Eya said.

     

    The night was not without its challenges. Eya managed an abdominal strain through the match, pushing through discomfort in a contest that was as emotional as it was physical. On her side of the net, though, she found comfort in another guiding presence — Sisi Rondina.

     

    “Pero buti na lang nandiyan si Ate Sisi sa side ko na ‘to tap. Kasi kung ano yung ginagawa ni Ate Sisi sa akin na pag-tap or pag-remind, yun yung ginagawa kasi ng ate ko before,” she said.

    “So ayun lang, masaya na marami akong ate sa paligid ko.”

    Creamline’s bench, after all, is stacked with veterans capable of carrying starting roles anywhere else in the league — from Alyssa Valdez and Michele Gumabao to Kyle Negrito and Bea de Leon.     “Hindi ka naman magiging champion team kung mga anim hanggang pito lang ‘yung gumagawa kaya happy kami kasi ‘yung mga nasa bench, nagpe-perform din,” he said.

     

    At the forefront remain pillars Bernadeth Pons, Jema Galanza, Pangs Panaga, Carlos, and Jia de Guzman — a starting unit that provides both firepower and stability.

    “Sana magtuloy-tuloy pa sa mga next game namin at mas maganda pa ‘yung ipakita nila. ‘Yung rotation namin, nandiyan naman na rin ‘yan at okay na naman. Walang team ngayon na hindi talaga lumalaban kaya dapat every possession, ready ka,” Meneses said. 

     

    Creamline faces another litmus test Saturday against the Nxled Chameleons. A win would lift the Cool Smashers to 5-1 and further affirm their upward trajectory and a loss would tighten the standings at 4-2.

    Creamline, wary of a brewing upset, slammed the door on Galeries Tower Highrisers, 25-14, 17-25, 25-18, 25-23, refusing to let momentum slip twice in the same night.

     

    The 10-time champions were reminded early that Galeries Tower would not simply fold. After cruising through the opening set, the Cool Smashers were stunned in the second as the Highrisers flipped the rhythm and forced extended rallies that took Creamline out of sync. But what followed in the fourth set was the clearest reflection of championship composure — a blistering 12-1 start that left no room for another surprise.

     

    Veteran steadiness proved decisive.

     

    Tots Carlos once again anchored the attack with 19 points and 13 digs, while Bernadeth Pons and Jema Galanza combined for 27 markers and relentless floor coverage. Pangs Panaga imposed herself in the middle with 11 points, including two timely blocks, and Jia de Guzman orchestrated the offense with 22 excellent sets that kept Creamline’s hitters in rhythm when the match threatened to tilt.

     

    Galeries Tower had its moments. Deloria and Asis provided consistent scoring, and the Highrisers trimmed a third-set deficit to just two at one point. But every push was met by a veteran response, including a crucial four-point run capped by a Panaga block that restored order.

    The first two sets alone foreshadowed the drama. Choco Mucho squandered multiple set points in the opener before regaining composure, then survived another tense exchange in Set 2 that featured clutch hits, miscues, and momentum swings at the net. Nxled’s third-set explosion — a stunning 16-5 run after trailing early — briefly flipped the script and exposed cracks in the Flying Titans’ rhythm.

     

    But unlike in past outings, Choco Mucho steadied itself.

     

    For Nxled, the loss deepened a troubling slide. After opening the conference with three straight wins, the Chameleons have now dropped three in a row. Brooke Van Sickle’s 20-point, 18-reception effort and MJ Phillips’ steady production went unrewarded as late-game execution once again proved costly.

    After a rocky four-game slide to open the season, Akari needed more than adjustments — it needed fire and Sharma supplied it.

     

    In a gripping five-set victory over the Cignal Super Spikers, 25-23, 20-25, 11-25, 25-23, 15-12, Sharma delivered 16 points built on 11 attacks and five crucial blocks. 

     

    The win not only snapped lingering doubts but also knocked off the former league leaders, restoring belief inside the Akari camp. But Sharma’s impact goes beyond the stat sheet.

     

    “Yes, super yes for me, especially kasi yun yung nakakapag-contribute, like yung energy ko sa loob ng court. Yun kasi yung nagbibigay sa akin ng purpose to play for my teammates kasi ayoko silang naaapi or ayoko silang — basta, ganun ako. Ako na lang yung mag-step up. Sige, bigay niyo na sa akin ’to, ako na yung magra—‘rawr.’ I love that!” Sharma said. 

     

    When rallies stretch and pressure mounts, Sharma has embraced the responsibility of stepping forward, not waiting for someone else to seize control.

    “This game talaga. I feel like monumental sa team, especially to get our momentum going, kasi nga we had a very bad start. So ngayon yung chance namin para magkaroon ng magandang momentum, and I feel like that’s my motivation playing for my teammates and contribute as much as I can to get the win,” said Sharma, the 24-year-old middle blocker.

    “Magandang start yung makikita mo sila in a body language na… Yun nga, sabi nila competitive and energized sila, not because of other people, because kailangan din namin makuha yun,” Salak said.

    But Tuesday offers no guarantees. Across the net stands Galeries Tower Highrisers — a team that has made unpredictability its calling card. Win, loss, win, loss — through five games, the Highrisers have refused to settle into a pattern. That volatility makes them dangerous, especially in a tournament where momentum shifts faster than the scoreboard can keep up.

     

    Creamline enters the 6:30 p.m. duel as the slight favorite, a status earned after emphatic responses to adversity. Following a straight-sets defeat to PLDT High Speed Hitters, the Cool Smashers bounced back with statement wins over Choco Mucho Flying Titans and ZUS Coffee Thunderbelles in four sets, then flexed their depth in a sweep of Capital1 Solar Spikers.

    Yee had stepped aside after the Thunderbelles’ opening game to focus on his health. Missing four matches while undergoing medical evaluation. 

     

    Though some procedures were initially considered, the diagnosis turned out to be less severe than feared.

     

    “Yes naman. Okay naman since the discharge. Buti, hindi na kailangan ang mga procedures. It’s a viral infection pala, so ayun,” Yee shared, relieved as he reflected on the ordeal.

     

    His return came against powerhouse PLDT High Speed Hitters, the reigning champions in the PVL. The Thunderbelles showed flashes of fight, pushing the favorites to tight 23-25 losses in the first two sets before fading in the third, 13-25. 

     

    The result underscored both their potential and the work still ahead. But Yee’s impact extends beyond the professional court. 

     

    Even while recovering, he remained immersed in volleyball, attending College of Saint Benilde’s recent NCAA loss to Letran. For a coach known for his development-driven philosophy, staying connected to the grassroots and collegiate game is part of the larger mission.

     

    The Thunderbelles’ early 1-5 record tells only part of the story. The absence of rookie middle blocker AC Miner is a crucial piece during their run to the Reinforced Conference finals — has forced constant lineup recalibrations. With several new faces in the rotation, chemistry remains a work in progress.

    “We’re trying to get everybody back. Pati ‘yung game, ‘yung pattern. Recovering,” Yee explained.


    “Malaking bagay yung mga nawala sa amin na players, pero ‘yan ang line-up natin. Maraming bago, so we’re trying to incorporate everybody into the rotation, kung anong rotation that will work for us. And yes, me, kababalik-balik ko lang din sa practice.”

    Akari now heads into its next matchup against the Capital1 Solar Spikers with renewed confidence, carrying momentum built not just on wins—but on a clearer identity centered around balance, resilience, and collective responsibility.
