    Leila Cruz joins PLDT after two seasons with Capital1

    The PLDT High Speed Hitters have added another promising piece to their roster as they continue to fine-tune their lineup ahead of the 2026-27 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) season, signing opposite spiker Leila Cruz from the Capital1 Solar Spikers.

     

    PLDT officially announced Cruz’s arrival on Wednesday, August 12, through its social media platforms, welcoming the former second overall pick as the team looks to build on its championship success from last season.

     

    “Aim just got sharper. You can never be late to your own time to shine. Opposite hitter Leila Cruz joins the High Speed Hitters starting in the 2026-27 PVL season. We are excited to see you at your best on the taraflex court! You got this and we got you,” PLDT said in its announcement.

    Cruz joins a PLDT squad that is coming off its breakthrough campaign in the PVL. The High Speed Hitters captured their first league championship last year after ruling the Invitational Conference, giving the team added confidence heading into the new season.

     

    The 26-year-old Cruz was selected by Capital1 with the second overall pick in the inaugural PVL Draft two years ago. Despite her considerable potential, however, injuries hampered her progress during her two seasons with the Solar Spikers and prevented her from establishing herself as a consistent starter.

     

    Her move to PLDT now provides Cruz with a fresh opportunity to revive her career and showcase the talent that made her one of the most highly regarded prospects in her draft class.

     

    Cruz also faced increased competition for playing time at Capital1 following the arrival of Erika Santos, who quickly established herself as one of the league’s premier opposite spikers. With Santos occupying a prominent role in the Solar Spikers’ rotation, Cruz found her opportunities on the wing increasingly limited.

     

    A change of scenery could therefore be exactly what Cruz needs as she looks to regain her rhythm, confidence, and consistency.

    At PLDT, Cruz will also reunite with several familiar faces from her UAAP days with the De La Salle University Lady Spikers. She will once again share the court with former teammates Alleiah Malaluan and Jessa Ordiales, while also joining a group of decorated La Salle alumni that includes Kim Fajardo, Kianna Dy, Majoy Baron, and Mika Reyes.

     

    The presence of those familiar teammates could help ease Cruz’s transition into a new system as she works to establish herself in a competitive PLDT lineup.

     

    High Speed Hitters head coach Rald Ricafort admitted that the opportunity to acquire Cruz came as a surprise, but said the team was delighted to welcome the young spiker and is eager to help her maximize her potential.

     

    “We were surprised but we are very happy with the acquisition. Hopefully, it’s a good problem to have. She is still young and has faced a few challenges, but hopefully we can help her learn and continue to improve. We will just take it one day at a time,” Ricafort said.

     

    For Ricafort and PLDT, Cruz’s arrival represents more than simply adding another player to an already talented roster. The coaching staff will have the task of helping her regain her form while finding the best way to utilize her attacking ability within the team’s system.

     

    The High Speed Hitters have already seen action in the ongoing 2026 PVL On Tour preseason conference, playing one match so far. PLDT opened its campaign with a victory over the Choco Mucho Flying Titans in Vigan City, Ilocos Sur, on Saturday, July 25.

     

    PLDT will return to action on Saturday, August 15, when it takes on the Akari Chargers in Lanao del Norte.

     

    While the On Tour serves as an opportunity for teams to assess their personnel and experiment with different combinations, PLDT will also use the preseason to prepare for the challenges of defending its championship in the upcoming PVL season.

     

    The High Speed Hitters enjoyed a landmark campaign last year, securing their maiden PVL championship by winning the Invitational Conference. With a strong core returning and Cruz now added to the mix, PLDT hopes her arrival can provide another dimension to an already deep roster.

     

    For Cruz, meanwhile, the move represents a chance to turn the page and make the most of a new opportunity.

     

    After two injury-plagued seasons with Capital1, the former La Salle standout will have another opportunity to prove why she was once considered one of the country’s top young volleyball prospects. With PLDT providing a new environment and familiar faces around her, Cruz will look to make her mark and finally establish herself as a key contributor in the PVL.

    The Philippine women’s national volleyball team capped a challenging stretch with a historic silver-medal finish in the recently concluded 6th Southeast Asian Volleyball Cup, giving Alas Pilipinas another reason to believe that its rebuilding process is heading in the right direction.

     

    Alas Pilipinas captain Jia De Guzman reflected on the team’s journey in a heartfelt Instagram post, emphasizing that the silver medal was the product of patience, adversity and the lessons they learned along the way.

     

    The achievement came during a turbulent period for Philippine volleyball, with the Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) facing a suspension from the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) and significant leadership upheaval surrounding the national program.

    Alas Pilipinas had also endured a difficult opening leg, where the team struggled to find its rhythm and failed to secure a podium finish. Rather than viewing that setback as a failure, however, De Guzman believes the difficult moments ultimately played an important role in the team’s development.

     

    “Our only ask was simple: leave everything on the floor, no matter the result. To give ourselves the patience and grace to grow into the players and the team we are capable of becoming,” De Guzman wrote.

     

    “So the struggle we went through in the first leg? All of it was necessary. The losses, the mistakes, the moments where things didn’t click—it was all part of becoming a better team. We needed those experiences to learn, build chemistry, and understand what we are capable of,” she added.

     

    The veteran setter stressed that development cannot happen overnight, particularly for a national team still trying to establish its identity and build chemistry amid a constantly changing volleyball landscape.

     

    For De Guzman, the silver medal serves as tangible proof that the Philippines can make significant strides when given the time and opportunity to learn from its mistakes.

    “Every strong team in the world was once given the space to make mistakes, experience losses, and learn from them. We are no different,” she said.

     

    “This silver is a beautiful reminder that growth takes time, patience, and a willingness to embrace every part of the journey. So proud of how far we have come, and even more excited for how much more we can become.”

     

    De Guzman also took the opportunity to recognize her teammates and the supporters who continued to stand behind Alas Pilipinas throughout its difficult campaign.

     

    “Thank you to every member of this team for all your hard work and dedication. Also to everyone out there who has given us unconditional love and support. Step by step, Philippines. On to the next,” she wrote.

     

    The 31-year-old setter has been one of the more vocal figures calling for changes and reforms within Philippine volleyball amid the controversies surrounding the sport’s national governing body.

     

    De Guzman was also absent from the 2026 Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Women’s Cup in June, where Alas Pilipinas struggled to make an impact and settled for an eighth-place finish under the leadership of Alyssa Valdez.

     

    Despite the challenges surrounding the program, the SEA Volleyball Cup campaign offered a much-needed positive development for the Philippine women’s team.

     

    The historic silver medal not only marked a significant improvement from their previous showing but also provided the players with confidence heading into their next international assignments.

     

    For De Guzman, the result is less about the medal itself and more about what it represents: a team willing to embrace setbacks, learn from adversity and continue building toward its potential.

     

    With the Philippine women’s volleyball program still navigating a period of transition, Alas Pilipinas’ silver-medal run could prove to be an important step in its long-term development.

    PVL postpones Santiago stop as Tropical Depression Maymay forces cancellation of On Tour matches

    The Premier Volleyball League’s return to Santiago City will have to wait a little longer after Tropical Depression Maymay (Kujira) forced the cancellation of the league’s On Tour stop scheduled for Saturday at the Santiago Sports Arena.

     

    Instead of welcoming fans for another provincial showcase, the league prioritized safety as worsening weather conditions and travel disruptions made it impossible to proceed with the event.

     

    The cancelled doubleheader was supposed to feature ZUS Coffee against PLDT Home Fiber before Capital1 faced Creamline in the featured match.

     

    Aside from concerns over public safety, the league also had to contend with logistical challenges after flights bound for Isabela were suspended beginning Thursday because of the tropical depression.

     

    PVL President Ricky Palou acknowledged the disappointment among volleyball fans in Santiago City and nearby areas but stressed that protecting everyone involved remained the league’s foremost responsibility.

     

    “We sincerely apologize to our fans in Santiago City and the rest of Isabela who were looking forward to the matches,” said Palou.

    “While we share everyone’s disappointment, the safety of our fans, players, coaches, officials, and staff must always come first. We appreciate everyone’s understanding and support during this time.”

     

    Although the cancellation halted this weekend’s schedule, Palou assured local supporters that the PVL remains committed to bringing the country’s premier professional volleyball league back to the province.

     

    “We made a promise to bring the PVL to Santiago City, and we intend to keep that promise.

     

    Although we were forced to cancel this weekend’s games because of circumstances beyond our control, we look forward to returning to Santiago during the upcoming PVL All-Filipino Conference,” he said.

     

    The league also confirmed that spectators who purchased tickets for the cancelled matches will receive refunds, with the complete refund guidelines to be released through Ticketmax’s official channels.

    Nxled coach Ettore Guidetti says Irah Jaboneta is living up to draft expectations

    The Nxled Chameleons have enjoyed an impressive start to the 2026 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) On Tour preseason, winning two of their first three matches to sit second in the standings and build early momentum ahead of the new campaign.

     

    A major factor behind Nxled’s encouraging performances has been the emergence of rookie libero Irah Jaboneta, who has wasted little time proving why the franchise selected her with the fifth overall pick in this year’s PVL Rookie Draft.

     

    The former University of the Philippines standout has provided stability to the Chameleons’ backcourt with her consistent floor defense and reliable reception. Jaboneta recorded nine excellent digs in Nxled’s convincing 25-17, 25-23, 25-18 victory over the Capital1 Solar Spikers in Vigan City, Ilocos Sur on July 25 before following it up with another impressive display against the Galeries Tower Highrisers in Polomolok, South Cotabato on August 1. In that straight-sets win, she finished with 12 excellent receptions and six excellent digs, once again anchoring the team’s defensive effort.

    Her performances have not gone unnoticed, with Nxled head coach Ettore Guidetti expressing his satisfaction over the team’s decision to make Jaboneta its first selection in the rookie draft.

     

    “Well, I have to say that she is confirming all my expectations about my first pick in the draft. She’s playing great, she’s absolutely a person fully focused on volleyball. I’m blessed every single day of the choice I made. I love the way she is, not only as a consistent libero but as a person. She’s really into the team, everybody trusts her,” Guidetti said during a media interaction.

    For Jaboneta, the seamless transition into professional volleyball has been made possible by the support she has received from her teammates, who have helped her settle into a new environment both on and off the court.

     

    “Makikita naman po kung gaano ako nag-e-enjoy sa court. Ganun din outside the court. Kasi ‘yung energy or ‘yung tiwala nila, nadadala ko po sa loob ng court. Nung una, nahihirapan din po talaga ako sa adjustments ko. Kasi syempre po, kinikilala ko pa po sila inside and outside the court. Parang nahihiya pa ako, naiilang pa ako, pero mas nagiging comfortable na po ako,” Jaboneta said.

     

    Although she has made an immediate impact, the 26-year-old believes she is only beginning to unlock her potential after converting from outside hitter to libero.

     

    She admitted that embracing her new role remains a work in progress, stressing that consistency and fully committing to the responsibilities of a libero are among her biggest priorities moving forward.

     

    “Consistency po talaga and dapat i-own ko po ‘yung role ko. Syempre po converted ako, kailangan wala na ‘yung mindset na papalo, kailangan kung ano ‘yung trabaho, gawin. So marami pa akong kailangang i-trabaho po kasi iba-iba po ‘yung kalaban namin, iba iba ‘yung kakahayaan nila as spikers, as players, so every game po kailangan paghandaan talaga. ‘Yun ‘yung challenge sa’kin as libero,” she explained.

     

    Jaboneta’s rapid development has been an encouraging sign for a Nxled side looking to establish itself as one of the league’s rising contenders. With the rookie continuing to grow in confidence and earning the trust of both her coaching staff and teammates, the Chameleons appear to have found a dependable presence in the back row for years to come.

     

    Nxled will look to continue its strong preseason form when it takes on the Farm Fresh Foxies on August 15 in Lanao del Norte, with Jaboneta expected to once again play a pivotal role in the Chameleons’ defensive setup.

    The Akari Chargers finally entered the win column in the 2026 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) On Tour preseason conference after outlasting the Choco Mucho Flying Titans, 27-25, 27-25, 21-25, 25-22, on Saturday, August 1, at the Polomolok Municipal Gymnasium in Polomolok, South Cotabato.

     

    Coming off a disappointing loss in their tournament opener, the Chargers responded with a determined and disciplined performance against one of the PVL’s perennial contenders. Akari showed poise in crucial moments, surviving two tightly contested opening sets before fending off Choco Mucho’s rally to secure its first victory of the preseason.

     

    A key figure in the Chargers’ breakthrough win was former University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) standout Faith Nisperos, who provided an immediate spark after coming off the bench. The outside hitter finished with nine timely points, delivering several crucial attacks that helped Akari maintain momentum in the closing stages of the match.

    For Nisperos, however, the performance represented far more than just a productive outing.

     

    The former collegiate star has spent the past few seasons battling a knee cartilage injury that sidelined her for extended periods and tested both her physical and mental resilience. After months of rehabilitation and recovery, her contribution against Choco Mucho marked another encouraging step in her journey back to full strength.

     

    “I owe it to myself to give out the best performance I can. I owe it to the person who worked really hard to get back to playing the sport we love. I also owe it to the people who helped me, believed in me and were there for me from the start of my healing journey,” Nisperos said during a media interview.

    Nisperos also drew inspiration from the warm reception Akari received during its stay in South Cotabato.

     

    “I was also inspired by the people of Polomolok. They have welcomed us and made us feel at home. What boosted me even more was our visit to DOLE Philippines School and seeing the aspiring students,” she added.

     

    Now in her third year in the PVL, the 26-year-old admitted that the road back has not been easy. Injuries forced her to spend much of the past seasons watching from the sidelines, but she leaned on her faith to overcome the setbacks.

     

    “In times of trouble, I really go back, reflect and pray, especially in situations that I have no control over. I always had faith in the Lord that what’s mine will come in His time. The struggles I experienced might just be His way of redirecting me toward the best path,” Nisperos shared.

     

    With her body finally healthy again, Nisperos is focused on steadily rediscovering the form that made her one of the country’s top collegiate players. While eager to contribute more for Akari, she acknowledged that returning to peak condition remains a gradual process.

     

    “I want to unleash the potential within me, and I will be needing the help of my teammates and coaches for that. I know I have grit, perseverance, and reliability. I’m working on myself to become the best version of the player and teammate Akari needs,” she said.

     

    “I take my recovery one day at a time. Despite my body being healed, I still have a lot to relearn on the court. I’m glad I have great muscle memory, but I still have to get used to the intensity of the PVL,” she added.

     

    The victory gave Akari valuable momentum as it improved its standing in the preseason tournament. Currently fifth in the standings, the Chargers will look to build on their breakthrough win when they take on the PLDT High Speed Hitters on Saturday, August 15, in Lanao del Norte.

    If Nisperos continues to regain her confidence and rhythm, Akari could become one of the teams to watch as the PVL On Tour preseason conference progresses.

    The ZUS Coffee Thunderbelles have made an emphatic statement at the start of the 2026 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) On Tour preseason conference, opening their campaign with back-to-back victories to emerge as one of the early pace-setters in the tournament.

     

    After reaching the finals of last season’s Reinforced Conference, the Thunderbelles have carried that momentum into the preseason, showcasing a more polished and versatile squad under head coach Jerry Yee. Their perfect 2-0 record has placed them atop the standings and strengthened optimism that the franchise is ready to challenge for its maiden PVL championship.

     

    ZUS Coffee began its campaign in dominant fashion with a four-set victory over the Akari Chargers, winning 25-11, 25-23, 26-28, 25-17 in Ilagan City, Isabela on July 8. The Thunderbelles followed that up with an equally convincing performance just three days later, sweeping crowd favorites Choco Mucho Flying Titans, 25-14, 25-20, 25-23, in Batangas City.

    The two victories highlighted the team’s growing chemistry, depth, and defensive discipline, with multiple players stepping up throughout both matches as ZUS Coffee continued to fine-tune its systems ahead of the regular season.

    “I would like to start by saying that I’m happy they are responding well to the changes, but we still have a lot of work to do,” Yee said during a media interaction.

    “If you are a coach, what you really see are the lapses, the shortcomings, and the things that your team needs to improve on.”

     

    Yee has approached the On Tour tournament as an opportunity to experiment with different lineups and rotations. Taking full advantage of the competition’s all-to-play rule, he has ensured every member of the roster receives meaningful court time, allowing players to gain valuable experience while helping the coaching staff evaluate different combinations.

     

    The 52-year-old mentor has also deployed several players in unfamiliar roles, believing positional flexibility will become one of the team’s biggest strengths once the regular season begins.

     

    “We are trying to practice our rotation,” Yee explained. “We have many new players and positional changes. So, we would like to practice those and get our players some playing time.”

     

    That willingness to experiment reflects ZUS Coffee’s long-term vision. Rather than simply chasing victories in the preseason, the Thunderbelles are focused on building a deeper and more adaptable roster capable of sustaining a championship challenge throughout the season.

     

    Another encouraging development for Yee has been the recent international exposure gained by several of his players. AC Miner, Chinnie Arroyo, Zam Nolasco, Alyssa Eroa, Riza Nogales, and Cloanne Mondonedo all suited up for Strong Group Athletics at the 2026 Formosa Women’s Volleyball Invitational Tournament in Taiwan.

     

    Competing against international opposition provided the players with invaluable experience in a high-level environment, something Yee believes will accelerate both their individual growth and the team’s overall development. Exposure to different playing styles and higher-intensity competition is expected to pay dividends as the Thunderbelles continue to mature into one of the PVL’s rising contenders.

     

    With an increasingly deep roster, improved chemistry, and valuable experience gained both domestically and internationally, expectations surrounding ZUS Coffee continue to grow. However, Yee remains committed to his process, emphasizing steady improvement over early-season hype.

     

    The Thunderbelles will have another opportunity to test themselves when they face the PLDT High Speed Hitters on Saturday, August 8, in the City of Santiago. A victory would not only preserve their unbeaten record but also provide another indication that ZUS Coffee is building the consistency required to transform last season’s breakthrough campaign into a genuine championship-winning year.

    Former Ateneo standout and Premier Volleyball League (PVL) veteran Jules Samonte has announced her retirement from professional volleyball at the age of 27, bringing the curtain down on a career that spanned more than a decade as she prepares for a new chapter in her life—motherhood.

     

    Samonte, who is expecting her first child with Rain or Shine Elasto Painters guard Felix Lemetti, shared the emotional news through a heartfelt post on Facebook, reflecting on the journey that transformed her from a young aspiring athlete into one of the country’s respected volleyball players.

     

    The versatile outside hitter described volleyball as more than just a sport, saying it became a defining part of her identity from the time she first picked up the game as a teenager.

    “As I prepare to enter a new chapter of my life, I can’t help but look back with a heart full of gratitude. Volleyball has been my source of joy, motivation and escape since I was maybe 13 years old. For almost half my life, it has been so much more than a sport. It gave me purpose, discipline, lifelong friendships, unforgettable memories, and countless incredible opportunities. It has shaped me into the person I never knew I could become,” Samonte wrote.

     

    Looking back on her playing career, Samonte acknowledged both the triumphs and setbacks that helped shape her as an athlete and as a person.

     

    “There were wins that made all the sacrifices worth it, losses that taught me resilience, and countless moments that made me into the woman I am today. I will carry every early morning call time, every training session, every bus/plane ride, every tear, every celebration forever.”

     

    She also expressed gratitude to everyone who became part of her volleyball journey, from coaches and teammates to team staff, organizations, and the fans who supported her throughout the years.

     

    “I am forever grateful for all the relationships I have created through this sport—my coaches, teammates, staff, organizations and the fans who became part of this journey. Thank you for believing in me, cheering for me, challenging me, and allowing me to live a dream I once only imagined.”

    Although stepping away from the sport was an emotional decision, Samonte said she is ready to embrace what she described as the most meaningful role of her life.

     

    “Now, as I step into my greatest role yet—becoming a mother—I’m choosing to close this chapter with nothing but gratitude. It’s bittersweet to say goodbye to the game that has been such a huge part of my life, but my heart is so full knowing that this ending is making way for a beautiful new beginning.”

     

    She ended her message by sharing her hopes for her growing family and the legacy she wants to leave behind.

     

    “Volleyball will always be a part of me and one day, I hope my daughter grows up knowing that her mom chased a dream with all her heart—and that because of it, she is learning to become the best mom she could possibly be. All for you, and all because of you. Here’s to the next chapter.”

     

    Samonte first rose to national prominence during her collegiate career with the Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP). Bursting onto the scene in Season 79, she immediately established herself as one of the country’s brightest young talents, earning Rookie of the Year honors after an impressive debut campaign.

     

    Her development continued over the next several seasons as she became an important piece of Ateneo’s championship core. The highlight of her collegiate career came in UAAP Season 81 in 2019 when she helped the Lady Eagles capture the league title, cementing her place in one of the most successful eras in the program’s history.

     

    Following her collegiate success, Samonte transitioned to the professional ranks, beginning her career with Perlas before joining the Premier Volleyball League. Throughout her time in the country’s top professional league, she suited up for several clubs, including the PLDT High Speed Hitters, Cherry Tiggo Crossovers, and most recently the Galeries Tower Highrisers.

     

    Known for her versatility, work ethic, and team-first mentality, Samonte became a dependable presence wherever she played, earning the respect of teammates, coaches, and opponents alike. While she may not have always been the biggest star on the court, her consistency and professionalism made her a valuable contributor throughout her professional career.

     

    Her retirement also marks the end of a volleyball journey that began in her early teens and blossomed into a career filled with memorable achievements, lifelong friendships, and experiences that extended well beyond the game itself.

     

    As she steps away from competitive volleyball, Samonte leaves behind a legacy defined not only by championships and individual accolades but also by perseverance, humility, and dedication.

     While fans will no longer see her competing on the court, the former Lady Eagle begins a new and equally meaningful journey—one centered on family and motherhood, a role she says she is ready to embrace with the same passion that defined her volleyball career.

    The Akari Chargers finally broke into the win column in the 2026 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) On Tour preseason conference, grinding out a hard-fought 27-25, 27-25, 21-25, 25-22 victory over the Choco Mucho Flying Titans on Saturday, August 1, at the Polomolok Municipal Gymnasium in Polomolok, South Cotabato.

     

    After falling short in their tournament opener, Akari displayed resilience and composure against one of the league’s perennial contenders, weathering multiple momentum swings to secure their first victory of the preseason. The Chargers leaned on balanced contributions throughout the match, but it was sophomore outside hitter Chenie Tagaod who delivered the biggest performance of the night.

     

    Tagaod erupted for a game-high 19 points built on 11 attacks and six imposing blocks, providing Akari with a steady offensive option while also making her presence felt at the net on defense. Time and again, the young spiker answered Choco Mucho’s rallies with timely hits and crucial stops, capping off her breakout performance with the match-clinching kill.

    Moments after sealing the victory, Tagaod was seen battling cramps, a testament to the physical demands of the four-set encounter. Despite the discomfort, the second-year standout was all smiles after the match, revealing that her inspired performance was fueled by the presence of her family, who made the trip to South Cotabato to watch her compete.

     

    “I played inspired today because my family is here to watch me play. I was able to see my father and sibling here. I hope I made them proud,” Tagaod said.

     

    The victory carried even greater significance for the Mindanao native, who cherished the opportunity to shine in front of the local crowd. Playing before the Bisaya community gave her performance a more personal meaning, as she hoped to inspire aspiring volleyball players from the region.

    “I’m very happy that I was able to show the Bisaya community the talent we have. To everyone dreaming of playing in the PVL, just keep making sacrifices and working hard. Your efforts will pay off,” she shared.

     

    “We really worked hard in training, so we expected to perform well. As you saw, a lot of us were dealing with cramps, but we kept fighting until the end.”

     

    While Tagaod stole the spotlight, Akari head coach Tina Salak emphasized that the victory was the result of a collective effort. The Chargers received valuable contributions from veteran leaders Ivy Lacsina, Grethcel Soltones, and Faith Nisperos, who helped stabilize the team in crucial stretches and guided the younger players through pressure-filled moments.

     

    Salak also pointed out that the preseason tournament has provided the Chargers with an ideal environment to strengthen their chemistry, especially as they continue to adjust to playing without several key members of the squad.

     

    Akari is currently missing Fifi Sharma, Justine Jazareno, and Mars Alba, who remain on national team duty with Alas Pilipinas in the Southeast Asian Volleyball Cup. Their absence has opened opportunities for other players to assume bigger roles, and Salak believes her team has embraced the challenge.

     

    “That’s exactly what we wanted—to give the team valuable exposure, build chemistry, and continue growing together. The PVL On Tour has been a great opportunity for us to get to know each other better on court,” Salak said.

     

    “I also have to give credit to our veterans for leading the team so well. Our stay here was definitely worth it. We gained so much experience and learned a lot about ourselves as a team and as individuals.”

     

    The victory serves as an encouraging step forward for the Chargers as they continue to build cohesion ahead of the upcoming PVL season. With younger players stepping into larger roles and veterans providing stability, Akari hopes to carry the confidence gained from its breakthrough win into the remainder of the preseason.

     

    The Chargers will look to build on their newfound momentum when they return to action against the PLDT High Speed Hitters on Saturday, August 15, in Lanao del Norte, where they aim to secure back-to-back victories and continue their upward trajectory in the PVL On Tour preseason conference.

    AC Miner makes successful return from injury, takes on new role for ZUS Coffee

    The ZUS Coffee Thunderbelles have made an impressive start to their campaign in the 2026 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) On Tour conference series, opening the tournament with back-to-back victories to establish themselves as one of the early teams to watch.

     

    Beyond their unbeaten record, the Thunderbelles have also used the preseason-style tournament as an opportunity to experiment with their lineup and develop the versatility of their young players. One of the biggest storylines surrounding the team has been the return of standout rookie AC Miner, who finally stepped back onto the court after missing the entire 2026 PVL All-Filipino Conference due to a lingering shin injury.

     

    However, fans have seen a different version of Miner upon her return. Instead of primarily playing her familiar role as a middle blocker, the 23-year-old has been deployed as an opposite spiker by head coach Jerry Yee—a move designed to maximize the team’s depth and give Miner a bigger role in the Thunderbelles’ system.

    For Miner, the position change has been a welcome challenge rather than an adjustment she has struggled with. The young standout is already familiar with playing multiple positions, having suited up as both a middle blocker and an opposite spiker during her final season in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP).

     

    With that previous experience serving as a foundation, Miner has embraced the opportunity to expand her skill set and contribute in a different capacity for ZUS Coffee.

     

    “I’m accepting it well. So, ginagawa ko lang ‘yung trabaho ko sa depensa since ‘yun naman siguro ‘yung kulang ko as a middle—‘yung defense sa back row. So, ‘yun pa rin ‘yung kailangan kong trabahuhin. Overall, well accepted naman ‘yung new role,” Miner said in a media interaction.

     

    The transition has also been made easier by the presence of veteran players who continue to guide the young talent on the roster. Among those leading the way is former national team standout Jovelyn Gonzaga, whose experience and leadership have provided Miner with valuable support both during games and in training.

     

    “I’m accepting it well, since ‘yung kapalitan ko, si Ate Jovelyn Gonzaga, isa sa mga veterans. Sobrang mahalaga kasi ni Ate Jov. Mas matagal na siyang naglalaro kaysa sa akin. With the help of the other veterans din, nagkakaroon ako ng kumpiyansa kasi hine-help nila ako para mas makatulong sa team at ma-boost din ‘yung confidence ko,” Miner added.

    ZUS Coffee’s decision to utilize Miner as an opposite spiker comes from the team’s impressive depth in the middle. With Thea Gagate, Riza Nogales, Zam Nolasco, and rookie Nicole Ong all capable of making an impact at the position, the Thunderbelles have the flexibility to move Miner to the wing and maximize their overall rotation.

     

    The move also serves as part of the team’s long-term planning. With Gonzaga entering the latter stages of her decorated career, ZUS Coffee is preparing Miner to eventually take on a bigger leadership role and potentially become one of the team’s primary offensive options.

     

    Yee explained that developing versatility among his players is necessary to ensure the team can maximize its available talent.

     

    “Ano naman eh, as long as willing ‘yung bata. Kasi ‘yung mga middles natin, hindi natin ma-maximize if tatlo sila or apat; may hindi maglalaro. So talagang merong isa na magsi-switch talaga. Nagta-transition na rin naman ‘yung mga opposite natin, so paunti-unti, nagpapakabata tayo kumbaga,” Yee stated.

     

    The ZUS Coffee head coach also acknowledged that while the team has shown improvement, there are still areas that need refinement as the Thunderbelles continue building chemistry.

     

    “At least na-address natin. ‘Yung blocking, talagang malaki na improvement. Siyempre, maraming butas, like ‘yung floor defense natin; kailangan maalaga tayo. ‘Yung third ball natin kailangan maayos din. May pros and cons pero ganun talaga, we have to work,” Yee added.

     

    Miner entered the PVL with high expectations after being selected fifth overall by ZUS Coffee in the 2025 PVL Rookie Draft. She quickly lived up to the hype, establishing herself as one of the league’s most promising young talents.

     

    During her debut professional campaign, Miner made an immediate impact, earning the Rookie of the Conference award in the 2025 PVL Reinforced Conference. Her ability to contribute both offensively and defensively stood out, especially considering her limited experience at the professional level.

     

    Now healthy and taking on a new challenge, Miner hopes to continue growing into a more complete player while helping the Thunderbelles maintain their strong start in the PVL On Tour.

     

    With a talented roster, a mix of veteran leadership, and emerging stars like Miner embracing expanded roles, ZUS Coffee appears determined to use the conference as another step toward building a stronger and more competitive team in Philippine volleyball.
