    Every championship contender eventually reaches a point where someone has to carry the load.

    For TNT Tropang 5G, that player has been Rey Nambatac.

     

    With the defending champions missing several key stars and facing an uphill climb after an inconsistent start to the PBA Season 50 Governors’ Cup, Nambatac has emerged as the steady force keeping TNT’s title defense alive.

     

    His leadership and clutch performances were rewarded after being named the PBA Press Corps Player of the Week for the period of July 28 to August 2.

     

    “As one of the leaders of the team, kailangan ko ipakita na lumalaban pa din tayo,” said Nambatac after spearheading TNT’s back-to-back victories.

     

    The veteran guard averaged 25.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 3.0 assists during the week, helping the Tropang 5G improve to 3-2 in Group A after opening the conference with an uneven campaign.

    Nambatac edged out Rain or Shine’s Adrian Nocum and NLEX’s Schonny Winston for his second weekly citation of the PBA’s milestone 50th season.

     

    His latest recognition comes at a time when TNT has been forced to rely heavily on its remaining healthy players.

     

    The Tropang 5G continue to play without Calvin Oftana, Jayson Castro, Kelly Williams, and Brandon Ganuelas-Rosser, while matters became even more complicated after RR Pogoy suffered a knee injury and Jordan Heading hyperextended his shoulder during the victory over Converge.

    Despite the growing injury list, Nambatac refused to let TNT lose its footing.

     

    Against the FiberXers, TNT found itself buried in an early 16-0 hole, but the veteran guard sparked the comeback before delivering the biggest shot of the night—a buzzer-beating three-pointer that lifted the Tropang 5G to a dramatic 110-107 victory. He finished with 30 points in one of the conference’s most memorable performances.

     

    Nambatac followed it up with another all-around effort against powerhouse San Miguel Beer, tallying 21 points and nine rebounds as TNT pulled off a 93-89 overtime upset.

     

    While Kim Aurin knocked down two crucial three-pointers late in the extra period, it was Nambatac’s steady production throughout the contest that once again anchored the defending champions.

     

    With TNT still waiting for several key contributors to return, Nambatac has become the stabilizing presence the team desperately needed—proving that championship aspirations can stay alive when one of its leaders is willing to shoulder the responsibility.

    Rey Nambatac wastes no time rewriting his TNT story in Governor’s Cup opening win 

    Rey Nambatac wasted little time putting his difficult Commissioner’s Cup campaign behind him, delivering a strong all-around performance to lead TNT Tropang 5G to a 106-103 victory over the Macau Giant Pandas in their opening game of the PBA Season 50 Governor’s Cup on Sunday.


    Nambatac finished with 23 points, six assists, and three rebounds as the defending champions held off a furious Macau rally after seeing a 15-point lead trimmed to just three in the closing minutes.

     

    The veteran guard’s performance marked a sharp turnaround from his previous conference, where he struggled to find his rhythm and posted career-low production since joining TNT.

     

    “To be honest, ‘yung last conference ko was a wakeup call, an eye-opener na rin para sa akin,” Nambatac said.

     

    The former Letran standout averaged only 5.5 points, 2.5 assists, and 2.0 rebounds in 27 games during the Season 50 Commissioner’s Cup. 

     

    His struggles extended into the Finals against Barangay Ginebra, a surprising dip considering he was named the PBA Press Corps Finals MVP when TNT won the same tournament last season.

     

    Rather than dwell on those struggles, Nambatac said he entered the Governor’s Cup determined to restore the level of play that helped establish him as one of TNT’s key backcourt weapons.

     

    “Sabi ko, hindi puwedeng ganun. So I need to step up and ibalik ko ‘yung usual na laro ko, and dito mag-i-start ‘yun sa conference na ‘to,” he said.

    The offseason also saw Nambatac become the subject of trade speculation, with reports linking him to a possible move to Titan Ultra in exchange for Joshua Munzon. 

     

    He stayed with TNT, however, and immediately rewarded the team’s faith with one of his best performances in recent months.

     

    Nambatac’s offense proved crucial as TNT weathered Macau’s late charge to secure its first victory of the conference.

     

    Still, the 31-year-old guard knows sustaining that level will be the bigger challenge as the tournament progresses.

     

    “Sabi nga ni coach Chot [Reyes], hopefully magtuloy-tuloy na. And the key in this conference for me is to be more consistent,” he said.

     

    With the opening hurdle cleared, TNT will look to improve to 2-0 when it takes on the Titan Ultra Giant Risers on Wednesday, July 22, with Nambatac aiming to build on a performance that could signal the return of his old form.

    Rey Nambatac delivered a strong fourth-quarter push, but it wasn’t enough as TNT Tropang 5G dropped a narrow 102-100 decision to Barangay Ginebra in Game 1 of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup Finals on Wednesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.


    While Ginebra took the early advantage in the series, much of the late-game momentum belonged to TNT’s guard, who helped turn what had been an 18-point deficit into a tense finish.

     

    Nambatac finished with 19 points, three rebounds, and three assists, with 13 of those points coming in the fourth quarter as he orchestrated TNT’s comeback attempt. 

     

    His scoring burst helped the Tropang 5G seize control briefly, taking a 95-90 lead with 3:06 remaining.

     

    The rally put TNT in position to steal Game 1 on the road, with Nambatac at the center of the offensive surge.

     

    Despite the loss, the former Finals MVP against Ginebra said the matchup carried added motivation for him.

     

    “I won Finals MVP last year so that doesn’t mean they’ll leave me alone. They made some adjustments on me and it had some good outcomes,” he said.

     

    “I was limited in the first half but it’s extra motivation for me that I won a Finals MVP against Ginebra (last year).”

    He also emphasized TNT’s ability to compete despite the result.

     

    “I don’t have any regrets because we gave them a good fight and we gave the fans a show. Actually, this is what I wanted, to have my rhythm, timing and confidence. After some three-point shots, I struggled again but personally, my rhythm and timing are there,” Nambatac said.

     

    Ginebra, coached by Tim Cone, managed to weather TNT’s late surge in the final minutes. Cone’s squad leaned on Justin Brownlee for steady production and RJ Abarrientos for the decisive plays down the stretch. 

     

    Abarrientos connected on back-to-back four-point plays in the last 91 seconds, swinging the lead back to Ginebra and sealing the 102-100 victory.

     

    The result gave Ginebra a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven series, despite TNT’s strong finish by Nambatac.

     

    Game 2 is set at 7:30PM on Friday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, where Nambatac and his squad will look to build on its late-game adjustments and avoid falling into an early series hole.

    Just when it appeared that TNT had finally seized control of the night, CJ Perez made it clear that the PBA Season 50 Philippine Cup Finals still ran through him.

     

    In a gripping Game 3 that swung sharply from quarter to quarter, Perez delivered a ruthless closing performance, erupting for 17 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter to carry San Miguel Beer to a 95–89 victory over TNT before a raucous Sunday crowd at the SM Mall of Asia Arena. The win pushed the Beermen to a 2–1 lead in the best-of-seven championship series and once again highlighted their ability to execute under pressure.

     

    Perez was relentless down the stretch, attacking the defense, finishing through contact, and knocking down timely baskets as San Miguel erased TNT’s late advantage. His fourth-quarter takeover flipped the momentum of the game and underscored why he remains one of the most feared closers in the league.

    Despite falling behind in the series, TNT guard Rey Nambatac expressed confidence that the Tropang Giga can still rebound and reclaim control of the Finals. However, he did not shy away from identifying fatigue as a growing concern for his team, particularly in high-pressure moments late in games.

    “For me, we only need to adjust a little because our coaches have laid out the plans. My concern is our fatigue. We couldn’t take care of the lead and when we try to protect our lead, the tendency is we get tired and we lose our advantage,” Nambatac said after the game.

     

    The physical toll of the contest was evident in the closing minutes, especially for TNT’s frontline. Star big man Brandon Ganuelas-Rosser showed clear signs of exhaustion after logging more than 40 minutes of action. While he still produced a solid double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds, his fatigue late in the game limited TNT’s ability to match San Miguel’s intensity and execution when it mattered most.

     

    As the Beermen ramped up their defensive pressure and pace in the final period, TNT struggled to generate quality looks and secure crucial stops, allowing San Miguel to dictate the tempo down the stretch.

     

    With little room for error moving forward, Nambatac emphasized the need for improved stamina and conditioning as the series progresses. Facing a must-win situation, TNT knows it cannot afford another late-game fade.

     

    “In this next game or our next practice, we need to prepare more on stamina and our conditioning,” he added.

     

    The Finals now shift to a pivotal stretch, with TNT looking to even the series and San Miguel aiming to tighten its grip on the championship. Game 4 of the Philippine Cup Finals between the two teams is scheduled for Wednesday, January 28, at the SM Mall of Asia Arena, where intensity, execution, and endurance are once again expected to decide the outcome.
