    Alex Eala made sure her Wimbledon debut as a seeded player came with a statement.

     

    Carrying the weight of history as the first Filipina to enter the main draw of the All England Club with a seed beside her name, Eala showed exactly why she earned that status, dismantling Mexico’s Renata Zarazua, 6-1, 6-2, to book her place in the second round of the 2026 Wimbledon Championships on Wednesday.

    In its pre-tournament rankings, the publication included Eala among 15 players—a mix of title favorites, former champions, and dangerous outsiders capable of making a deep run at what is widely regarded as tennis’ toughest Grand Slam.

    Her rise has been anything but straightforward. Only two years ago, Eala was still fighting for a place in the Wimbledon main draw. In 2024, she fell one match short after losing in the final round of qualifying.
