    The top-seeded Filipina moves into the Round of 16 of the WTA 125 Birmingham Open, where she will once again cross paths with Russia’s Alina Charaeva in a matchup that brings their history and unfinished business.

     

    Their rivalry has already swung both ways. Eala defeated Charaeva earlier this year at the Philippine Women’s Open in January, producing a commanding 6-1, 6-2 victory in front of a home crowd in Manila. 

     

    But the Russian holds her own win in their head-to-head, having beaten Eala on the ITF circuit back in 2020, leaving the pair locked at 1-1 entering their latest meeting.

     

    Both players arrive in strong form. Charaeva, 24, opened her Birmingham campaign with a convincing 6-3, 6-1 win and also arrives with recent silverware after capturing her maiden WTA 125 title in Midland earlier this year. 

     

    Eala, meanwhile, has already made her mark on the surface this week, dismantling Australia’s Priscilla Hon 6-0, 6-2 in her opener.

     

    “I think it was a great match,” she said.

     

    “I put in a good performance as well, especially with it being my first match on grass. I’m really happy. Priscilla is a great player, so this is definitely a good feeling.”

    The matchup also carries a subtle parallel in their recent trajectories. Charaeva lifted her first WTA 125 trophy in Midland earlier this season, while Eala secured her own breakthrough at that level with a title run in Guadalajara last September—two rising players steadily pushing into more consistent WTA contention.

    Alex Eala opened her Birmingham Open singles campaign with a convincing 6-0, 6-2 triumph over Priscilla Hon on Tuesday. The Filipina tennis star raced through the contest in just over an hour to book her place in the second round. 


    Entering the tournament as the top seed, Eala showed immediate confidence on an unfamiliar surface, controlling the pace of play from the opening game and rarely allowing Hon any room to settle. 

     

    The result not only secured Eala a place in the second round but also provided a swift response after her early exit from the tournament’s doubles competition a day earlier.

     

    From the outset, Eala dictated rallies with aggressive shot-making and consistent pressure from the baseline. Hon struggled to find answers as Eala repeatedly broke serve and raced through the first set in just 30 minutes without dropping a game.

     

    The second set followed a similar pattern. Eala surged ahead 5-0 and looked poised for a flawless finish before Hon managed to halt the momentum by earning a break of serve in the sixth game.

    The Australian also saved a match point as she attempted to extend the contest.

    “I think I’m really happy with my performance. It’s a really good win considering it’s my first match on grass and obviously she’s a great player so I’m really happy with the win,” Eala said after the match. 

     

    Beyond advancing to the next round, the win carried additional significance. Eala improved her head-to-head record against Hon to 2-1, reclaiming the advantage after falling to the Australian in their most recent meeting in 2024. 

     

    It also marked her first victory over Hon on grass, with their previous encounters coming on hard courts in Roehampton and Ningbo.

     

    The convincing performance suggests Eala is adapting quickly to the demands of the grass-court season, a promising sign as she continues her build-up toward the summer’s biggest tournaments.

     

    Awaiting Eala in the second round is either Germany’s Greet Minnen or Russia’s Alina Charaeva, with the Filipina carrying plenty of momentum after one of her most emphatic wins of the year.

    Alex Eala begins grass-court season at Birmingham Open 

    Alex Eala is set to begin her grass-court campaign at the Birmingham Open from June 1 to 7, marking the start of a demanding but potentially rewarding stretch that could shape her preparations for Wimbledon.


    Unlike last year, when she entered Birmingham searching for consistency, Eala arrives this time as one of the tournament favorites. 

     

    The 20-year-old has been installed as the No. 2 seed in the WTA 125 event, trailing only top-seeded Janice Tjen in the draw.

     

    Her opening challenge will come against Priscilla Hon in the Singles Round of 32. The matchup adds another chapter to a budding rivalry between the two players. 

     

    Hon emerged victorious in their first meeting during the qualifying rounds of the Roehampton tournament in England in 2023. Eala responded the following year, defeating Hon in the qualifying stage of the Ningbo tournament in China to level their head-to-head record.

     

    Currently ranked No. 135 in the world, Hon brings valuable experience to the contest, having previously climbed as high as No. 94 in the WTA rankings.

     

    During last year’s edition, she also fought through a nearly three-hour battle against Linda Fruhvirtova but ultimately suffered a first-round exit after a 5-7, 7-6, 1-6 defeat. 

     

    It was a tough introduction to the grass season, but one that now serves as a measuring stick for how much her game has evolved over the past year.

    Eala is also scheduled to compete in the doubles competition, where she will partner Czech player Nikola Bartunkova. The pair will face Harriet Dart and Maia Lumsden in the Round of 16.

     

    More than a single tournament, Birmingham represents the opening act of a packed grass-court itinerary.

     

    Following the event, Eala will continue her preparations through the Ilkley Open from June 8 to 14 and the Nottingham Open from June 15 to 20. She will then head to Germany after receiving a main-draw wildcard into the Bad Homburg Open, a WTA 500 tournament scheduled from June 21 to 27.

    The wildcard invitation places Eala alongside notable names such as Eva Lys and seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams, offering another opportunity to test herself against a high-level field before Wimbledon.

     

    She will also return to the Eastbourne Open later in June. Last season, Eala enjoyed one of the finest runs of her professional career there, advancing all the way to the final before finishing runner-up to Australia’s Maya Joint.

     

    Taken together, the upcoming tournaments form a carefully constructed path toward Wimbledon, which runs from June 29 to July 12 in London.

     

    For Eala, the grass season is about more than rankings points or tournament results. It is a chance to sharpen her game on the surface she has repeatedly described as her favorite and to build momentum heading into the third Grand Slam of the year.

     

    As the Birmingham Open begins, the focus is not simply on one opponent or one tournament. It is on a month-long journey that could reveal just how far the young Filipina star can go when Wimbledon finally arrives.
