    The Southeast Asian pairing delivered a composed and authoritative performance, dispatching second seeds Zhang Shuai of China and Cristina Bucsa of Spain, 6-3, 6-3, in the quarterfinals of the Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open at the Zayed Sports City International Tennis Centre.

    Alexandrova, fresh off a dominant win over Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska, proved too powerful this time, closing out the match in an hour and 31 minutes. Still, the result carried significance: Eala reached the quarterfinals of a WTA 500 event for the first time in her career, another step forward in her steady rise.

     

    The week is not over yet for Eala. Together with Tjen, she now eyes a spot in the doubles final when they face world No. 26 Olivia Nicholls of Great Britain and Tereza Mihalikova of the Slovak Republic on Friday—another opportunity to turn a breakthrough run into something even bigger.

    The Southeast Asian duo surged into the doubles quarterfinals early Wednesday morning (Manila time), outlasting Leylah Fernandez and Kristina Mladenovic in a gripping 7-5, 3-6, 10-6 battle that tested both composure and chemistry. 

     

    For Eala and Tjen—teaming up for the first time on tour—the victory was less about rankings and more about resilience.

    Alex Eala didn’t just open her Abu Dhabi Open campaign with a win—she announced her presence with authority.

     

    The newly crowned WTA No. 45 advanced to the round of 16 of the WTA 500 Abu Dhabi Open after dispatching Zeynep Sönmez, 6-4, 6-3, early Tuesday (Philippine time), turning a familiar matchup into another statement performance on a bigger stage.

     

    The early exchanges hinted at a tight contest. Locked at 3-all in the opening set, Eala calmly shifted gears, tightening her service games and forcing Sönmez into longer rallies. From that moment on, the Filipina dictated the flow, winning four games in a row at one point and never relinquishing control of the match.

     

    The numbers reflected that dominance. Eala won 71 total points to Sönmez’s 56, capitalized on six of 12 break-point chances, and claimed 35 receiving points, consistently pressuring her opponent’s serve.

    The 20-year-old Filipina moved up to a new career-high of world No. 45 in the latest Women’s Tennis Association rankings released Monday, inching closer to the coveted top-40 barrier as she prepares for her next test on the global stage.

     

    That next challenge comes quickly. Eala returns to competition late Monday night (Manila time) at the WTA Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open, where her campaign begins with a familiar face across the net—Zeynep Sonmez of Turkey—in the round of 32 at the Zayed Sports City International Tennis Centre.

     

    While the matchup carries the feel of a reunion, both players know that sentiment has little place once the first ball is struck. Eala and Sonmez share history not only as opponents, but also as former doubles partners, having teamed up in multiple tournaments across Europe. This time, however, they meet with ranking points and momentum on the line in a WTA 500 event.

    Alex Eala’s homecoming campaign came to a close under the bright lights of the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center, where the Filipina rising star bowed out of the Philippine Women’s Open quarterfinals on Wednesday night. In front of a packed, vocal crowd that rallied behind her until the final point, Eala fell to Colombia’s Camila Osorio, 6-4, 6-4, in a tightly contested clash that showcased both promise and growing pains.

     

    Seeded second in the tournament, the 20-year-old Eala matched Osorio shot for shot for much of the evening, but small lapses proved costly. 

     

    Breaks of serve at crucial moments swung momentum toward the Colombian, who steadied herself whenever the match threatened to tilt the home favorite’s way. 

     

    Despite the crowd’s chants of “Let’s go, Alex,” Osorio sealed the contest with a decisive break late in the second set before closing it out with a crosscourt passing shot.
