    The long grind of the preliminaries has officially lost its value. What once separated contenders from pretenders now carries little weight as the Premier Volleyball League All-Filipino Conference shifts into its most unforgiving phase.

    In this environment, there is no room for what came before.

     

    Recent wins, like those secured by the Capital1 Solar Spikers and the Choco Mucho Flying Titans, offer no guarantees. If anything, they serve as reminders of how thin the margins are. Capital1 needed to fend off a determined push from the Galeries Tower Highrisers, while Choco Mucho handled the ZUS Coffee Thunderbelles in four sets—but both results came in matches where momentum could have easily swung the other way.

     

    That uncertainty now becomes the defining theme. Capital1 continues to draw strength from Bella Belen, whose scoring touch has returned at the right time. Yet even her presence doesn’t eliminate the threat posed by Galeries Tower, a team that has shown enough depth and balance to turn a close match into an upset with just a few cleaner sequences.

     

    “Well, of course they will study us and we have to do the same. And since the game is really on Tuesday, the first part is study and rest. But you know they have a lot of potential to be explored on the other side. 

     

    So we’re gonna see what we can counter attack. But for sure, it’s time to go,” said Capital1 head coach Jorge Souza de Brito after the Solar Spikers subdued the Highrisers last Saturday.

    On the other side, Choco Mucho brings star power and offensive firepower led by Sisi Rondina, but the unpredictability of ZUS Coffee lingers as a dangerous variable.     “Sa panalo na to, syempre sobrang ganda para samin. Extra motivation para sa paghaharap namin ulit sa kanila, mas may dala-dala at may paghuhugutan kami na kaya namin dominahin sila ngayong game,” said Choco Mucho head coach Dante Alinsunurin.

     

    “At yun pa, kung ano pa yung pwede naming adjustment para sa game, siguro gagawin namin sa training,” he added.

Even then, nothing is settled—the losers of those matchups will drop into another sudden-death encounter against the Play-In survivors.

     

    It creates a layered postseason where advantage exists, but safety does not.

    For teams emerging from the Play-In, the path is undeniably harder, but it also forges something different. They arrive battle-tested, sharpened by pressure, and accustomed to playing with everything on the line.

    Capital1 became the latest team to slide into the next phase following a crucial sequence of results in Sta. Rosa, where victories by Akari Chargers and Farm Fresh Foxies tightened the standings and effectively pushed the Solar Spikers out of Top Four contention. 

     

    Sitting at 3-5, Capital1 showed flashes of promise early in the conference but struggled to sustain momentum against the league’s top contenders.

     

    Their campaign opened with a strong four-set win over ZUS Coffee, highlighted by a breakout showing from their young core, but the team soon ran into consistency issues. Losses to Nxled Chameleons, PLDT High Speed Hitters, and powerhouse Creamline Cool Smashers exposed gaps in execution, particularly in closing sets and maintaining scoring balance.

     

    Galeries Tower, meanwhile, saw its campaign unravel after an encouraging early stretch. The Highrisers pulled off a notable upset against Nxled and even snapped a long losing skid with a gritty win over ZUS Coffee, signaling a potential turnaround.

    Akari entered the court with a balanced 3-3 record, facing a formidable opponent in the Creamline Cool Smashers, the league’s decorated powerhouse and a perennial title threat. Yet instead of playing the role of underdog, the Chargers authored one of the conference’s biggest surprises.

     

    Akari snapped Creamline’s impressive run with a hard-earned four-set triumph, 25–21, 28–26, 17–25, 25–21. The victory was anchored by relentless defense and timely scoring that kept the Chargers steady whenever the Cool Smashers threatened to shift momentum.

     

    Libero Justine Jazareno set the tone for Akari’s resilience, collecting 22 excellent digs at 59 percent efficiency to earn Player of the Game honors. Her floor coverage repeatedly denied Creamline’s attackers and allowed the Chargers to build their counterattacks.

     

    Eli Soyud ignited Akari’s decisive fourth-set push, stringing together four consecutive hits that helped create an early 7–3 advantage. Earlier in the match, Faith Lacsina had already laid the offensive foundation with a 20-point performance, while Grethcel Soltones added 14 markers, delivering steady production during crucial stretches that helped maintain Akari’s composure.

    Creamline, meanwhile, showed flashes of its usual firepower but struggled to consistently break through the Chargers’ defense.

     

    Jema Galanza led the Cool Smashers with 16 points, highlighted by a stretch of powerful attacks that briefly sparked hopes of a late comeback. Tots Carlos contributed 10 points and Pangs Panaga added nine, while Bernadette Pons was held to eight markers as Akari’s defensive pressure kept her in check.

     

    Despite the loss, Creamline remained within the upper tier of the standings at 5-2, while Akari strengthened its position in the middle of the pack.

     

    If the first match delivered a shock, the second game offered redemption, as Nxled entered the night searching for answers against ZUS Coffee, the Chameleons finally rediscovered their rhythm.

     

    After dropping the opening set, Nxled regrouped and surged back to claim a 20-25, 25-15, 25-23, 25-19 victory, ending the skid and keeping their playoff hopes alive.

     

    Brooke Van Sickle once again led the offense, firing 20 points to pace the Chameleons. Jonah Sabete-Escamillan matched the output with 19 markers of her own, including three blocks, while middle blocker MJ Phillips dominated the net with 12 points highlighted by three rejections.

    Veteran Myla Pablo chipped in eight points as Nxled leaned on its slight statistical advantage to pull away late in the match.

     

    The win lifted the Chameleons to a 4-4 record, leaving them within reach of a coveted Top 4 spot as the preliminary round nears its conclusion. Nxled will face league-leading PLDT in its final elimination match on Tuesday.

     

    For ZUS Coffee, however, the search for a breakthrough continues. The defeat marked the team’s fifth straight loss, dropping them to 1-7 and to the bottom of the standings.

     

    Thea Gagate paced ZUS Coffee with 16 points, while Cess Robles added 13 markers. Jovelyn Gonzaga finished with 11 points and Riza Nogales contributed eight, but their efforts were not enough to halt Nxled’s late surge.

     

    As the preliminary round inches closer to its final stretch, Thursday’s results reshaped the race. One contender proved vulnerable, another rediscovered its footing and the battle for positioning suddenly feels more open than ever.

    After weeks away due to a viral infection, veteran head coach Jerry Yee returned to the bench for the ZUS Coffee Thunderbelles in the 2026 Premier Volleyball League All-Filipino Conference, bringing with him a sense of steadiness the team has sorely missed.


    Yee had stepped aside after the Thunderbelles’ opening game to focus on his health. Missing four matches while undergoing medical evaluation. 

     

    Though some procedures were initially considered, the diagnosis turned out to be less severe than feared.

     

    “Yes naman. Okay naman since the discharge. Buti, hindi na kailangan ang mga procedures. It’s a viral infection pala, so ayun,” Yee shared, relieved as he reflected on the ordeal.

     

    His return came against powerhouse PLDT High Speed Hitters, the reigning champions in the PVL. The Thunderbelles showed flashes of fight, pushing the favorites to tight 23-25 losses in the first two sets before fading in the third, 13-25. 

     

    The result underscored both their potential and the work still ahead. But Yee’s impact extends beyond the professional court.

    “We’re trying to get everybody back. Pati ‘yung game, ‘yung pattern. Recovering,” Yee explained.


    “Malaking bagay yung mga nawala sa amin na players, pero ‘yan ang line-up natin. Maraming bago, so we’re trying to incorporate everybody into the rotation, kung anong rotation that will work for us. And yes, me, kababalik-balik ko lang din sa practice.”

    In a match that tested both resolve and composure, the Thunderbelles leaned on veteran leadership and timely execution to outlast the Chargers in a gripping contest that stretched to a deciding fifth set. After dropping the opening frame, ZUS Coffee responded with renewed energy in the second set before surrendering the third. Facing the prospect of a third straight defeat to open the conference, the Thunderbelles dug deep in the fourth, edging out Akari in a tight 25-23 finish to force a decider.

I-delete muna lahat ng nangyari – achievements, trophies. Balik muna kami sa basic – paano kami nagsimula at saan kami nanggaling – para makapagsimula muli as a team,” she added.

    The Thunderbelles will be without reigning Rookie of the Conference AC Miner, who has been ruled out of the opener as she continues to recover from a lingering shin injury. Miner’s absence puts the team at an immediate disadvantage as it begins its All-Filipino Conference run against a Solar Spikers side eager to make an early statement.

     

    Strong Group Athletics (SGA) head of volleyball operations Kiara Cruz confirmed in a media interaction that Miner has been dealing with a recurring shin injury since 2025. According to Cruz, team management made the decision to prioritize Miner’s long-term health, opting to give the promising middle blocker ample time to fully recover rather than risk worsening the injury early in the conference.

    “AC Miner has been dealing with a recurring shin injury since last year. She can play through it, but we opted to let her heal so that she can be 100 percent for the rest of the year,” Cruz said in a statement.

    Selected fifth overall in the PVL Rookie Draft last June, Miner quickly established herself as one of the league’s brightest young talents. She capped an impressive debut by winning the Rookie of the Conference award in the 2025 PVL Reinforced Conference, emerging as a key contributor on both ends of the floor despite her limited experience at the professional level.

     

    Miner finished her first conference with 82 total points, the second-highest output among all rookies, while averaging 10.25 points per match.     In a move that has sent ripples through the Premier Volleyball League (PVL), the ZUS Coffee Thunderbelles pulled off what many are calling a coup by signing Filipino volleyball veteran Rachel Daquis from sister team Farm Fresh Foxies. The versatile hitter became a free agent in 2025, opening the door for a high-profile transfer between the two teams.

     

    Daquis, a standout for the Far Eastern University (FEU) Lady Tamaraws in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP), initially signed with Farm Fresh in October 2024 amid high expectations following more than a year-long hiatus from competitive play. However, despite her vast experience and decorated career, she struggled to find regular playing time with the Foxies, who opted to give younger attackers a chance to develop.

     

    The move was closely monitored by league officials, with PVL control committee chairman Sherwin Malonzo clarifying why the transfer was approved despite the two teams being sister squads.

    “Dumaan sa akin ‘yung move last year. Finished contract si Daquis. Nag-free agent siya after pero she decided to sign with ZUS. As a free agent, she is free to choose the team she wants to transfer to,” Malonzo explained, emphasizing that Daquis’ status as a free agent made the transfer fully compliant with league rules.

    The PVL has long maintained a structured “showcase period” to manage free agent movements and prevent conflicts of interest, particularly between sister teams. Initially set at one month at the end of 2024, the period was eventually reduced to 15 calendar days to streamline player transitions and ensure competitive balance.

     

    “Ang huling usapan namin, isang buwan ang showcase period pero masyadong matagal. Tapos nauwi nga sa 15 calendar days. I think that was the last, so we will just publish it and then eventually release it by the end of the year in 2024,” Malonzo added, underscoring the league’s efforts to maintain transparency and fairness in player movements.

     

    Daquis’ resume speaks volumes about her impact on the court. Beyond her FEU exploits, she has accumulated numerous individual and team honors throughout her career and represented the Philippine women’s national volleyball team from 2015 to 2017. Her combination of skill, leadership, and experience makes her a major asset for the Thunderbelles as they aim to climb the PVL standings.

     

    Off the court, Daquis has already begun laying the groundwork for life after volleyball. In September 2023, she attended a prestigious coaching clinic in the United States, gaining insights into advanced training methods and team management. She has also pursued her passion for culinary arts, enrolling at the International School for Culinary Arts and Hotel Management (ISCAHM) in Quezon City—an institution founded by the father of her former Cignal teammate, Vanie Gandler.

     

    With her unique blend of experience, versatility, and off-court ambition, Rachel Daquis’ arrival at ZUS Coffee Thunderbelles is more than just a player transfer—it signals a renewed competitive push for the franchise, and a veteran presence capable of mentoring younger players while elevating the team’s championship aspirations.

    On Monday, ZUS Coffee formally unveiled five new reinforcements — Cess Robles, Renee Peñafiel, Karen Verdeflor, Chie Saet, and Rachel Daquis — signaling an aggressive push to transform last season’s breakthrough into sustained contention. The announcement underlined the franchise’s belief that progress demands both fresh legs and steady hands.

     

    “Let’s make it official! Welcome to the ZUS Coffee family, Karen Verdeflor, Ren Peñafiel, Cess Robles, Chie Saet, and Rachel Anne Daquis! Tuloy ang trabaho! Tuloy ang laban,” the team wrote in a Facebook post.

     

    At the center of that influx is Robles, who arrives from Chery Tiggo with the profile of a scorer capable of carrying stretches of offense.
