For the first time in nearly three years, the face most closely associated with modern Brazilian football is back on the world stage.
Neymar’s return to the Brazil national team was not simply another squad announcement — it became the defining moment of coach Carlo Ancelotti’s unveiling of Brazil’s 26-man roster for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Inside a gala ceremony in Rio de Janeiro, the loudest reaction from the crowd arrived when Neymar’s name was officially called, signaling the comeback of Brazil’s all-time leading goalscorer after a long and uncertain absence from international football.
For months, questions surrounded whether the 34-year-old forward could still force his way back into Brazil’s plans after battling injuries, inconsistency, and fitness concerns.
Now, after years of setbacks, Brazil is once again placing part of its World Cup hopes on the shoulders of its most recognizable star.
Neymar has not played for Brazil since suffering a serious knee injury during a World Cup qualifying match against Uruguay in 2023. Since then, injuries repeatedly interrupted his career, including a difficult spell in Saudi Arabia before eventually returning to his boyhood club Santos FC in January.
Even there, fitness problems continued to limit his impact. Neymar managed just 15 appearances in 31 matches since returning to Santos in 2026, leaving many uncertain if he could regain enough form to convince Ancelotti ahead of the tournament.

But Brazil’s coach believes the veteran still offers something statistics alone cannot fully measure.
“He has improved his fitness, he will be an important player in this World Cup,” Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti said at a press conference in Rio de Janeiro.
Ancelotti also stressed the value of experience within a tournament environment as demanding as the World Cup.
“He can still improve his fitness until the first match of the World Cup,” Ancelotti said. “He has experience in this kind of competition, the love of our group, he can create a better environment in this group.”
Despite Brazil’s star-studded attack and deep talent pool, Ancelotti emphasized that winning the World Cup will ultimately depend more on mentality and resilience than perfection.
“The World Cup won’t be won by a perfect team — because a perfect team doesn’t exist,” he said. “It will be won by the most resilient team.”
The tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico will mark Neymar’s fourth World Cup appearance after previously representing Brazil in 2014, 2018, and 2022.
Yet unlike previous tournaments where Brazil often depended heavily on him, this squad appears more balanced between established veterans and emerging stars.
Neymar joins an attack loaded with talent, including Vinicius Junior, Raphinha, and teenage striker Endrick, giving Brazil multiple offensive options entering the competition.
The squad also combines experienced leaders such as Casemiro and Marquinhos alongside younger prospects including Rayan and Luiz Henrique.
For Brazil, the objective remains unchanged, capturing a record sixth World Cup crown.
The campaign begins on June 13 against Morocco before Group C matches against Haiti and Scotland.
After years defined by injuries and uncertainty, Neymar now has another chance to chase the one achievement still missing from his career, lifting the World Cup trophy.
