  • Canada stun South Africa with late Eustáquio winner to reach World Cup round of 16

Canada stun South Africa with late Eustáquio winner to reach World Cup round of 16

Canada booked its place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a dramatic 1-0 victory over South Africa, with captain Stephen Eustáquio scoring a stoppage-time winner in the 90+2nd minute to break South African hearts.

For much of the Round of 32 contest at Los Angeles Stadium in Inglewood, California, both sides battled in a tightly contested affair that appeared destined for extra time. South Africa defended with discipline and organization, frustrating a Canadian attack that struggled to find clear openings throughout the match.

Canada controlled large spells of possession and attempted to dictate the tempo, patiently probing for weaknesses in the South African defense. However, South Africa remained compact at the back and looked dangerous on the counterattack, creating several promising situations that kept the Canadian backline alert.

The first half produced few clear-cut chances as both teams prioritized defensive stability over attacking risk. Canada’s midfield worked tirelessly to circulate possession, while South Africa’s disciplined pressing prevented the North Americans from building sustained momentum in the final third.

After the break, Canada increased the intensity in search of a breakthrough. The introduction of fresh legs helped the Canadians push higher up the pitch, forcing South Africa deeper into its own half. Despite the mounting pressure, South Africa’s defenders continued to repel wave after wave of Canadian attacks, and it looked increasingly likely that the match would require an additional 30 minutes to determine a winner.

Just as extra time seemed inevitable, Canada produced the decisive moment.

Deep into stoppage time, captain Stephen Eustáquio found the breakthrough in the 90+2nd minute, sending Canadian supporters into celebration. The late strike finally broke South Africa’s resistance and proved to be the only goal of the contest, securing a dramatic victory and avoiding the uncertainty of extra time.

The goal capped a determined Canadian performance in which patience ultimately paid off. While Canada was made to work for every opportunity, the team’s persistence was rewarded at the most crucial moment, with Eustáquio once again demonstrating his importance as both a midfield leader and a player capable of delivering in high-pressure situations.

For South Africa, the defeat marked a heartbreaking end to an impressive World Cup campaign. The African side came within moments of forcing extra time against one of the tournament’s strongest teams but was undone by a single lapse in the closing stages. Despite the elimination, South Africa earned praise for its disciplined defensive display and resilience throughout the match.

Canada now advances to the Round of 16, where it will face the winner of the Round of 32 clash between the Netherlands and Morocco. The Canadians will carry confidence into the next stage after surviving a stern test, though improvements in their attacking efficiency will be necessary as the competition intensifies.

  • Jorge Souza de Brito sees valuable lessons for Capital1 despite loss to Dominican Republic in a friendly

Jorge Souza de Brito sees valuable lessons for Capital1 despite loss to Dominican Republic in a friendly

The Capital1 Solar Spikers continue to build chemistry and fine-tune their system ahead of the upcoming Premier Volleyball League (PVL) On Tour conference, with the team recently testing itself against one of the world’s top national squads in a friendly match against the Dominican Republic.

Although the Solar Spikers were unable to pull off an upset against the powerhouse Dominican side, the exhibition served as an important measuring stick for a Capital1 team that has undergone significant changes during the offseason. Facing a team with extensive international experience gave the Solar Spikers an opportunity to evaluate their progress while exposing areas that still need improvement before the new PVL season begins.

The Dominican Republic arrived in the Philippines as part of its campaign in Week 2 of the Volleyball Nations League (VNL) held in Pasig City. Ranked among the world’s strongest women’s volleyball programs, the Caribbean nation showcased its class against Capital1, highlighting the gap between an established international team and a club still working to integrate several new players into its lineup.

OKBET is Asia’s most trusted and popular online sports gaming platform. Visit us on OKBET to stay up to date with all sports news from around the world.

Despite the result, Capital1 head coach Jorge Souza de Brito viewed the match as an invaluable learning experience for his squad.

“As a first friendly match, it was very good. Even without having all the key players on the court at the same time, the system proved to be viable, even against the strong Dominican team. There is no comparison between the level of the teams, but learning how to handle the fundamentals in critical situations may have been the greatest lesson from the game. We will have moments like these in the competitions ahead,” De Brito said in a media interaction.

The Brazilian mentor emphasized that the match was never solely about the final score. Instead, it provided his players with a rare opportunity to compete against elite international talent while testing the team’s execution under pressure. Such experiences are expected to benefit the Solar Spikers as they prepare for the highly competitive PVL On Tour conference, where consistency and composure in crucial moments often determine the outcome of matches.

Capital1 enters the new season carrying high expectations after assembling one of the league’s busiest and most ambitious offseason rosters. The organization made a series of headline-grabbing acquisitions aimed at surrounding rising star Bella Belen with experienced talent capable of elevating the team’s competitiveness.

Among the biggest additions were former Cignal HD Spikers standouts and Most Valuable Player tandem Vanie Gandler and Erika Santos, both expected to provide scoring firepower and veteran leadership. The Solar Spikers also strengthened their playmaking department by signing veteran setter Jaja Maraguinot in free agency, adding another experienced floor general capable of orchestrating the team’s offense.

The roster overhaul continued during the PVL Rookie Draft, where Capital1 selected University of Santo Tomas captain and two-time University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Best Libero Detdet Pepito with the second overall pick. Widely regarded as one of the country’s top defensive specialists at the collegiate level, Pepito is expected to make an immediate impact in the back row. The club also added University of the East standout Khy Cepada, further boosting the team’s youthful depth.

With an impressive collection of talent now assembled, many observers believe the Solar Spikers have significantly raised their ceiling entering the new campaign. However, De Brito cautioned that talent alone does not automatically translate into victories, stressing that the team’s long-term success will ultimately depend on chemistry and cohesion.

“We are on the right path, and with the support of these new players, Capital1 continues its journey of growth and development. Without a doubt, the quality of the players naturally leads people to expect exponential growth, but performance depends on the chemistry we are building, and of course, on the ups and downs that every new group experiences. Our goal is to exceed expectations through hard work and by doing things the right way for our team,” he added.

As one of the most respected coaches in Philippine volleyball, De Brito understands that integrating multiple new players into a single system requires patience. Building communication, trust, and familiarity on the court often takes weeks or even months, particularly with several key newcomers expected to play major roles immediately.

Fortunately for Capital1, there is still valuable preparation time before meaningful games begin. Training sessions and additional practice matches will give the coaching staff more opportunities to experiment with different combinations while allowing the team’s new acquisitions to further develop their understanding of De Brito’s system.

The Solar Spikers will officially begin their PVL On Tour campaign on Saturday, July 25, when they face the Nxled Chameleons in Vigan City, Ilocos Sur. By then, Capital1 hopes the lessons learned from competing against one of the world’s premier volleyball nations will translate into stronger performances as the club looks to establish itself as a legitimate contender in the upcoming conference.

  • NBA Trade Report: Isaiah Hartenstein agrees to a three-year, $75M contract extension with Oklahoma City Thunder

NBA Trade Report: Isaiah Hartenstein agrees to a three-year, $75M contract extension with Oklahoma City Thunder

The Oklahoma City Thunder have taken another significant step toward maintaining the core of their championship-caliber roster, agreeing to terms with veteran power forward Isaiah Hartenstein on a new contract extension ahead of the 2026-27 National Basketball Association (NBA) season.

The agreement ensures that one of the Thunder’s most reliable frontcourt players will remain in Oklahoma City for years to come as the franchise continues its pursuit of sustained success in the Western Conference. Hartenstein has become an integral piece of the Thunder’s rotation since arriving in 2024, providing a physical presence in the paint, elite rebounding, interior defense, and veteran leadership for one of the NBA’s youngest contenders.

NBA insider and ESPN’s Shams Charania confirmed the agreement on the social networking platform X (formerly known as Twitter).

OKBET is Asia’s most trusted and popular online sports gaming platform. Visit us on OKBET to stay up to date with all sports news from around the world.

“Oklahoma City Thunder’s Isaiah Hartenstein intends to sign a new three-year contract to return to the Thunder through 2028-20 that brings his total earnings with the franchise at five years and $134 million guaranteed, sources tell ESPN. A key signing in 2024 leading to the 2025.

“Hartenstein and his reps, Andrew Morrison and Aaron Mintz of CAA Sports, worked with the Thunder on an agreement that brings $75 million in new money over the next three years – plus a maximum 15% trade kicker and a unique mutual option that allows both parties to rework the agreement again in 2028 prior to the final season.”

The extension underscores Oklahoma City’s commitment to keeping together the nucleus that has transformed the franchise into one of the league’s elite teams. With a roster built around rising stars and experienced role players, retaining Hartenstein provides continuity in the frontcourt while rewarding a player who has consistently delivered on both ends of the floor.

Since signing with the Thunder in the summer of 2024, Hartenstein has emerged as one of the team’s most dependable contributors. His ability to control the boards, protect the rim, facilitate offense from the high post, and set effective screens has made him an ideal fit in head coach Mark Daigneault’s system.

During the 2025-26 campaign, the 28-year-old averaged 9.2 points and 9.4 rebounds per game while serving as a key starter in the frontcourt. His impact became even more evident during the postseason, where he started 20 of Oklahoma City’s 23 playoff games and played a vital role in the team’s deep playoff run through his physicality, rebounding, and defensive versatility.

While Hartenstein’s statistics highlight his on-court value, Thunder executive vice president and general manager Sam Presti emphasized that the veteran’s influence extends well beyond basketball.

“Hart has been great. He’s been a big factor in a lot of our success. Also, I know whenever I talk about him, I never want to not mention just the amount of community work this guy has done here in such a short amount of time. Just unbelievable. Him and his family, they have put two feet into this community and given it a huge hug. He’s been wonderful off the floor as well.”

Presti’s comments reflect the culture Oklahoma City has carefully cultivated over the past several seasons, placing equal importance on character, professionalism, and community involvement alongside on-court production. Hartenstein has quickly embraced that identity, becoming a respected figure within both the organization and the Oklahoma City community.

Born in the United States but raised largely in Germany, Hartenstein began his professional basketball career overseas before making the leap to the NBA. His journey to becoming one of the league’s respected big men has been defined by perseverance and steady development.

Hartenstein entered the NBA after being selected by the Houston Rockets with the 43rd overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft. Before finding a long-term home in Oklahoma City, he suited up for the Denver Nuggets, Cleveland Cavaliers, Los Angeles Clippers, and New York Knicks, gaining valuable experience at every stop while steadily expanding his role.

His career reached another milestone when he signed with the Thunder on July 6, 2024. Since then, he has become an indispensable member of one of the NBA’s brightest young teams, providing stability and experience alongside the franchise’s emerging stars.

With Hartenstein now committed for the foreseeable future, the Thunder have strengthened another key piece of their championship foundation. The extension not only rewards a player whose contributions have been instrumental to the team’s recent success, but also reinforces Oklahoma City’s long-term vision of keeping its core intact as it looks to remain among the NBA’s elite contenders for seasons to come.

  • Olympic medalist Aira Villegas eyes comeback after health setback ahead of 2026 Asian Games

Olympic medalist Aira Villegas eyes comeback after health setback ahead of 2026 Asian Games

Philippine boxing standout Aira Villegas continues to earn widespread respect following her impressive bronze-medal finish in her Olympic debut at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, France. Her breakthrough performance marked one of the standout achievements for Team Philippines, solidifying her status as one of the country’s rising stars in elite boxing.

However, the Olympic medalist has since been sidelined from competition as she deals with health concerns outside the ring. Villegas has been battling severe allergies that at one point became serious enough to require emergency medical attention, temporarily halting her training and competition schedule.

“Na ER (emergency room) ako, nagsabay-sabay allergies ko,” Villegas said in a media interaction.

The 30-year-old boxer revealed that she has recently developed a new suspected allergy to mushrooms, although medical professionals are still in the process of confirming the exact cause. The recurring allergic reactions have significantly affected her availability for international competitions, including her absence from recent tournaments in Europe where she was originally scheduled to compete as part of Team Philippines’ overseas campaign.

Despite the setback, Villegas remains focused on recovery and is determined to return to full competitive form ahead of the 2026 Asian Games, which will be held from September 19 to October 4 across Aichi Prefecture and Nagoya in Japan.

She acknowledged that the situation has forced her to be more cautious moving forward, particularly as she prepares to resume training in Baguio City, a key high-altitude training hub for Philippine boxers.

“I’m trying to fix everything so that I would know what to avoid when I get back to training in Baguio next month. I’m competing in the 51 kilogram from 50 kilogram. But I was told we will be having a training camp before the Asian Games. We still don’t know where, but we will have one for sure,” she added.

Villegas also noted that the transition to a new weight class will be part of her long-term preparation strategy as she continues building strength and adjusting her conditioning program for future international competitions.

Her coaching team and national boxing officials remain optimistic about her recovery timeline, emphasizing that her Olympic experience and proven resilience make her a strong candidate for future podium finishes despite recent health setbacks.

As preparations continue for the Asian Games, Villegas is expected to gradually reintegrate into full training once her medical condition stabilizes, with the goal of regaining peak form in time for one of the biggest sporting events in Asia.

For Team Philippines, her return will be a welcome boost as the boxing program looks to build on its strong Olympic showing and translate that momentum into success on the continental stage in Japan.

  • SWP races to finalize Philippine weightlifting team for 2026 Asian Games

SWP races to finalize Philippine weightlifting team for 2026 Asian Games

With the 2026 Asian Games fast approaching, anticipation is building for the 20th edition of the prestigious continental multi-sport event, which is scheduled to take place from September 19 to October 4 across Aichi Prefecture and Nagoya in Japan.

As one of the Philippines’ key medal prospects in the Games, weightlifting is once again expected to play a significant role in the country’s campaign. In preparation, the Samahang Weightlifting ng Pilipinas (SWP) is working against time to finalize its selection process and ensure that the strongest possible national squad is assembled ahead of the competition.

The federation is pushing to complete the Philippine National Weightlifting Championships and other selection events in the coming months, as these will serve as the primary basis for identifying athletes who will represent the country on the Asian stage. However, preparations have faced unexpected disruption after the national tryouts originally scheduled for June 8 were postponed due to an earthquake in General Santos City.

OKBET is Asia’s most trusted and popular online sports gaming platform. Visit us on OKBET to stay up to date with all sports news from around the world.

Despite the setback, SWP leadership remains focused on maintaining momentum and ensuring that athletes remain in peak condition as qualification and selection continue. SWP president Monico Puentevella emphasized that the federation is committed to a thorough evaluation process to ensure only the most competitive lifters make the final roster for the Asian Games.

“Because of the problem with the earthquake in General Santos, we are going to have another tryout, going around and looking at the athletes who are eligible for the Asian Games. We are already ready, but they need more exposure before we reach Japan. We want them to compete elsewhere aside from Japan. We want them to try out first. We have already submitted our list, but we still want to verify who are the most deserving,” Puentevella said in a media interaction.

Puentevella added that while the postponement disrupted the immediate schedule, it has not affected the overall training rhythm of the national pool, as athletes continue to prepare for a packed international calendar that includes major qualifying tournaments.

According to the SWP chief, the federation remains focused not only on the Asian Games but also on long-term development, with upcoming competitions such as the World Youth and Junior Championships and the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Olympic qualifying events in November forming part of the broader preparation cycle.

“We never stop training, even if they go back to their provinces, because we have international events coming up like the World Youth and Junior Championships. We have the IWF Olympic qualifying in November, so we never stop training. We will continue even if we were disrupted by the earthquake in General Santos,” he added.

The SWP is now targeting July for the staging of the Philippine National Weightlifting Championships, which is expected to play a crucial role in finalizing selections and giving lifters one last major domestic platform before the Asian Games.

Beyond selection concerns, the federation is also intent on improving the international exposure of its athletes, with plans to send lifters to overseas competitions where possible to better prepare them for the level of competition they will face in Japan.

The Philippines’ weightlifting program enters the 2026 Asian Games with the goal of improving on its previous outing in Hangzhou, China, in 2023, where the country managed to secure a single medal. That podium finish came courtesy of Elreen Ando, who delivered a bronze medal performance in the women’s 64-kilogram category with a total lift of 222 kilograms.

As the countdown to Aichi-Nagoya continues, the SWP remains focused on refining its lineup, building competitive readiness, and ensuring that the national weightlifting team arrives at the Asian Games fully prepared to contend against Asia’s elite lifters once again.

  • Camille Rodriguez expands role as she leads women’s football development in the Philippines

Camille Rodriguez expands role as she leads women’s football development in the Philippines

Camille Rodriguez has long been regarded as one of the most accomplished women’s footballers in Philippine history, with a career that has spanned nearly two decades at the highest level of the sport. Now 31 years old, the veteran midfielder has transitioned into a senior figure within the national setup, having first joined the Philippine women’s national football team at just 16 years of age.

Over the years, Rodriguez has not only become a mainstay for the national team but has also continued to perform at the club level, currently suiting up for Kaya FC in the Women’s Philippines Football League (WPFL). As she moves deeper into the latter stages of her playing career, Rodriguez has begun preparing for life beyond the pitch, gradually expanding her involvement in football development, media, and coaching.

Her growing list of responsibilities reflects her evolving role in the sport. Rodriguez was appointed as the mental performance coach for the Ateneo Blue Eagles women’s football team during UAAP Season 86, where she has contributed to player development off the field by focusing on mindset, resilience, and mental preparation. In addition, she works as a game analyst and broadcaster for the Philippines Football League, offering tactical insights and match breakdowns.

OKBET is Asia’s most trusted and popular online sports gaming platform. Visit us on OKBET to stay up to date with all sports news from around the world.

Beyond coaching and media work, Rodriguez now holds a significant leadership position as the Head of Women’s Football Development for the Philippine Football Federation (PFF), a role that places her at the forefront of efforts to grow and strengthen the women’s game in the country.

“So right now I play many roles in the women’s football space. But the main ones that I do play right now is I’m a footballer. I play professional football in Kaya. I also do broadcast. So I commentate on games, do pitchside talks, break down the analysis side. And then lastly, I am now the head of women’s football development for the PFF. So that means I work with both PFF and FIFA to really basically mount projects that grow pathways for women in football here. So whether that be players, referees, coaches, that is mainly my role, to lead and grow those initiatives. That’s the short and long of it,” Rodriguez said as quoted by The GAME.

She also highlighted that her transition into multiple off-field roles has accelerated in recent years, marking what she described as a natural progression from full-time athlete to football development advocate. While still active as a professional player, Rodriguez acknowledged that she is now firmly in a transition phase, balancing competitive football with broader responsibilities aimed at growing the sport nationwide.

“My expanding of roles from just being a player really happened within the past two years. I am in that transition period so from being a full-time player national athlete now transitioning to really grow the game here locally in the Philippines. I felt that opportunities opened up for me and very grateful for these opportunities right on the national level with FIFA also. So, it felt natural to some extent that I’ve always been passionate about growing women’s football here in the country,” she added.

As Head of Women’s Football Development for the PFF, Rodriguez has prioritized expanding access to competitive leagues and strengthening grassroots and elite pathways for female players across the country. She emphasized that her focus extends beyond just competition, aiming instead to build a sustainable ecosystem for women’s football.

“‘Yun talaga, leagues and also capacity building opportunities. My programs this year are centered on that to elevate the league experience and to share capacity-building opportunities. Locally, I wholeheartedly believe growth in participation. I am a very optimistic person so by 10, 20, 30%. And also more visibility for female professionals in the space and we have already growing numbers.

“We’re planting seeds, but we need everyone to, continue to water it and nurture and likewise, for me, it’s you help us, but we also help you. I personally believe there’s always opportunities to help each other especially if the goal is the same which is to grow women’s football and football in the Philippines,” Rodriguez concluded.

With her dual identity as both an active player and a football development leader, Rodriguez stands as one of the most influential figures in the women’s game in the Philippines today. Her work across coaching, broadcasting, and federation-level development highlights a broader commitment to ensuring that future generations of female footballers have stronger pathways, greater visibility, and more opportunities than ever before.

  • Hosting the Asia Pacific Padel Cup 2026 highlights padel’s rapid growth in the Philippines

Hosting the Asia Pacific Padel Cup 2026 highlights padel’s rapid growth in the Philippines

Padel continues to establish itself as one of the fastest-growing sports in the Philippines, with the country’s rise on the international stage taking center stage as it hosts the third edition of the Asia Pacific Padel Cup.

The prestigious regional tournament has brought together some of the strongest national teams from across the Asia-Pacific, highlighting the rapid growth of padel in the region while providing athletes with another opportunity to compete at the highest level. Beyond the competition itself, the event also underscores the Philippines’ emergence as one of the sport’s leading nations after capturing the championship in the previous edition.

As defending champions, the Philippine team enters the tournament carrying both the expectations of a home crowd and the responsibility of showcasing the country’s continued progress in the sport. The tournament serves not only as a battle for regional supremacy but also as a celebration of padel’s expanding footprint throughout Asia-Pacific.

Padel Pilipinas president Jeff Cheng believes hosting the Asia Pacific Padel Cup is another major step in developing the sport both locally and across the region, while also providing Filipino athletes with a platform to demonstrate their growth against elite international competition.

“APPC 2026 marks an important milestone in the continued growth of padel in the Asia-Pacific region. As the defending champions, we enter this tournament with a deep sense of pride and responsibility – not just to compete, but to show the region what Filipino athletes are capable of when given the right support and opportunities,” Cheng said during a media interaction.

Cheng added that events of this magnitude are instrumental in building a stronger competitive culture, encouraging more Filipinos to take up the sport, and strengthening relationships among neighboring padel federations. Hosting the tournament also reflects the Philippines’ growing capability to organize world-class sporting events while helping raise the overall standard of competition in the region.

The significance of the tournament was also highlighted by Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president Abraham Tolentino, who described the event as another milestone in the country’s continued rise as one of Asia-Pacific’s emerging leaders in padel.

“The Philippine Olympic Committee is proud to stand behind Padel Pilipinas as it hosts this prestigious regional competition. Events like the Asia Pacific Padel Cup are a testament to how far padel has come in the region – and the Philippines, as defending champion, is proof of what is possible when a federation is built on the right foundations. We look forward to seeing the best of Asia-Pacific compete right here in Manila,” Tolentino added.

Tolentino noted that staging an international competition of this caliber reflects the country’s growing reputation as a capable host of major sporting events and further reinforces the Philippines’ commitment to supporting developing sports alongside its traditional athletic disciplines.

The Asia Pacific Padel Cup also aligns with the government’s broader push to position the Philippines as a premier sports tourism destination in Southeast Asia. By attracting athletes, officials, and fans from across the region, tournaments such as this generate greater international exposure while creating opportunities for local athletes to compete against world-class opposition without leaving home.

Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman Patrick Gregorio emphasized that the event represents much more than just another international tournament, pointing to its long-term impact on athlete development and grassroots participation.

“The Philippines is quickly becoming a hub for emerging sports in the region, and hosting the Asia Pacific Padel Cup 2026 is a proud reflection of that momentum, as part of PSC’s sports tourism campaign. This tournament highlights not only the rapid growth of padel in the country, but also the dedication of our athletes who continue to raise the level of competition. We are proud to support this international event as it showcases world-class play, strengthens regional ties, and celebrates the passion and talent of athletes across Asia-Pacific.

“This occasion is a proud moment for our sporting community and reflects our continued commitment to developing sport at all levels. To grow the sport, we want our young athletes to watch world-class padel being played here in our country, so they can be inspired to pursue excellence and see what is possible on the international stage,” Gregorio concluded.

With the finals scheduled for Sunday, June 28, anticipation continues to build as the tournament enters its decisive stages. Fans are expected to witness high-level competition featuring some of the region’s best players, while the host nation looks to successfully defend its crown on home soil.

Since its inception, the Asia Pacific Padel Cup has evolved into more than just a championship tournament. It has become a key platform for expanding the sport across Asia-Pacific, strengthening collaboration among national federations, and providing athletes with valuable international experience. For the Philippines, this year’s edition represents another opportunity to solidify its status as one of the region’s premier padel nations while inspiring a new generation of Filipino players to embrace one of the world’s fastest-growing racket sports.

  • Chot Reyes confirms beach training has long been a staple of Philippine basketball preparation

Chot Reyes confirms beach training has long been a staple of Philippine basketball preparation

The Ateneo de Manila University community and the Philippine basketball fraternity continue to mourn the devastating loss of two promising student-athletes following the deaths of men’s basketball players Divine Adili and Rene Clert Baterbonia during a team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora.

The tragedy, which occurred on Monday, June 8, has sent shockwaves across collegiate sports, drawing heartfelt tributes from teammates, coaches, alumni, sports organizations, and basketball fans nationwide. The incident has also sparked renewed discussions about safety protocols during off-court training activities, particularly those conducted in natural environments.

According to the Police Regional Office 3 (PRO-3), initial reports indicated that Adili and Baterbonia were participating in water-based activities when they were reportedly swept away by strong currents into deeper waters. Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident and have urged the public to refrain from speculation while fact-finding efforts remain ongoing.

The heartbreaking event has also prompted veteran coaches and basketball figures to reflect on the role of beach and water-based training in modern conditioning programs. Among those who addressed the issue was former Gilas Pilipinas head coach and current TNT Tropang 5G mentor Chot Reyes, who spoke candidly during an appearance on GMA 7’s Fast Talk with Boy Abunda.

Reyes explained that beach training has long been a staple in basketball conditioning, not only in the Philippines but in various training programs around the world, because of the physical benefits it provides.

“Alam mo, sa sports, not only in basketball, beach training is very effective resistance training. ‘Yung tumatakbo sa bugangin, as against running on regular surfaces. That really promotes stronger footwork, greater cardiovascular endurance. So, maraming gumagawa niyan. We do that. Several times na kami nagpabalik-balik. Difference beaches,” Reyes said.

He emphasized that conditioning methods are carefully integrated into a team’s overall preparation, with different phases designed to build endurance, improve strength, and eventually allow players to recover before competitions.

“There are, in the entire training pedagogy, if you want to call it, there are times where you have to go to really hard training and then there’s a cycle where you have to rest a little bit in preparation for the actual tournament. So there are different means. Water training is not new,” he added.

Drawing from decades of coaching experience, Reyes revealed that he had incorporated water-based exercises into his own programs as early as his first coaching stint in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA). However, he stressed that safety has always been a top priority whenever his teams conducted outdoor training sessions.

According to Reyes, his teams limited water activities to shallow areas, using knee-deep water strictly as a form of resistance during conditioning drills rather than for swimming exercises.

“Sa akin, we have done a lot of activities in beach areas. Sa akin, my teams, we just limit them to running sa buhangin. Not really going into the water. And they were not swimming or, you know, panglangoy kasi sa dami, hindi naman sila swimmer. But it was just that they were, the objective was to put them in knee-deep water to provide more resistance to the activities, whatever, the calisthenics or the activity that they were doing.

“So it’s always a combination of doing those activities. We call that, you create shared memories. That’s how teams are built,” Reyes concluded.

Beyond the physical benefits, Reyes underscored the importance of team-building activities in fostering trust, camaraderie, and chemistry among players—qualities that often translate into stronger performances on the court. He noted that shared experiences outside of basketball can help build the bonds that successful teams rely upon throughout a long and demanding season.

Following the incident, Ateneo de Manila University issued an official statement confirming that the Blue Eagles were conducting a strength and conditioning session in knee-deep water as part of their scheduled team-building program. The university said the players were unexpectedly caught by large waves and powerful currents, resulting in the tragic accident.

As investigations continue, the loss of Adili and Baterbonia has left an immeasurable void within the Ateneo community and Philippine collegiate basketball. Their passing has prompted an outpouring of condolences from schools, athletic organizations, former players, and coaches, while also encouraging renewed conversations about risk assessment, emergency preparedness, and safety measures during outdoor training sessions.

For many in the local basketball community, the tragedy serves as a sobering reminder that while innovative training methods and team-building exercises remain valuable components of athlete development, ensuring the safety and well-being of student-athletes must always remain the highest priority.

  • “I’m back”: Cristiano Ronaldo responds to critics after becoming first player to score in six World Cup tournaments

“I’m back”: Cristiano Ronaldo responds to critics after becoming first player to score in six World Cup tournaments

Portugal responded emphatically to a disappointing start to their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a dominant 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan in Group K action at Houston Stadium on Wednesday, June 24 (Philippine Standard Time).

After being held to a frustrating draw by DR Congo in their opening match, Portugal entered the contest under pressure to deliver a statement performance. They did exactly that, producing a clinical display highlighted by a historic brace from captain Cristiano Ronaldo as Roberto Martínez’s side reignited their World Cup ambitions.

The Portuguese superstar opened the scoring in the sixth minute before adding his second goal of the night in the 39th minute, helping his side establish complete control before halftime. Nuno Mendes also found the back of the net in the 17th minute, while an own goal from Uzbekistan goalkeeper Abduvohid Nematov in the 60th minute and a late strike from Rafael Leão completed the rout.

Ronaldo’s performance was significant not only because it helped secure a crucial victory for Portugal but also because it etched his name even deeper into football history. The 41-year-old became the first player ever to score in six different FIFA World Cup tournaments, adding another remarkable achievement to an already legendary career.

The record-breaking display came just days after Ronaldo faced intense criticism following his subdued performance against DR Congo. Questions were raised about whether age had finally caught up with the five-time Ballon d’Or winner after Portugal struggled to break down their opponents in the opening fixture.

However, Ronaldo delivered the perfect response on the pitch.

Following the final whistle, the Portuguese icon was seen shouting “I’m back, I’m back” into a television camera as he celebrated a performance that silenced many of his doubters.

Speaking after the match, Ronaldo admitted the week leading up to the game had been one of the most difficult periods of his recent career.

“God helps those who work hard. It was a difficult, dark week; it felt like I’d already retired from football. But I held on as I always do because I believe more in hard work than in football. It was difficult, I have to admit, but we’re back,” Ronaldo said.

The veteran forward acknowledged the criticism directed his way but emphasized that he has grown accustomed to such scrutiny after more than two decades at the highest level.

“It’s fine because when you think about it, it’s already 23 years I have been a professional and whenever things don’t go well it’s: ‘Cristiano, he’s finished, he’s old.’ But well, it was a good response from me and my teammates, which is what we wanted,” he added.

Despite his individual accomplishments, Ronaldo insisted the team’s success remains his top priority. While proud of his latest record, the Portuguese captain stressed that helping the national team progress deep into the tournament matters far more than personal accolades.

“Very happy, but for me the most important thing is the work the team did, the confidence we had. We took a lot of hits during the week, we knew that would happen. The team worked very well, we improved a lot. Every cloud has a silver lining, as they say.”

“Speaking for myself, breaking records is always nice, but my goal is to help the national team achieve its objectives. In this part it was about getting through the qualifying round, and with four points I think we’ve already done it.”

“Today I was named the best player on the field, tomorrow it will be someone else. If we are united, I think we can go very far,” Ronaldo concluded.

Beyond Ronaldo’s heroics, Portugal’s overall performance will be equally encouraging for manager Roberto Martínez. The European side looked sharper, more aggressive, and far more fluid in attack than they did in their opening match. Their midfield controlled possession throughout the contest, while the defense comfortably neutralized Uzbekistan’s limited attacking threats.

The victory lifts Portugal to second place in the Group K standings with four points from two matches, placing them in a strong position to advance to the Round of 32. More importantly, the manner of the win restores confidence within the squad ahead of a crucial final group-stage showdown.

Portugal will now turn their attention to a decisive clash against Colombia on Sunday, June 28 (Philippine Standard Time) at Miami Stadium. With qualification within touching distance and momentum firmly on their side, Martínez’s men will be eager to build on this impressive display and confirm their place in the knockout rounds.

For Ronaldo, meanwhile, the night served as another reminder that even at 41 years old, he remains capable of producing moments of brilliance on football’s biggest stage. When doubts emerged, the Portuguese legend once again responded in the way he knows best—by making history.
