Leadership that listens. Leadership that puts the welfare of athletes first. For the sports community, for the fans, for the country.

     

    “Pero ngayon, higit kailanman, kailangan natin ang suporta ng volleyball community. Ngayon, hindi man pare-pareho ang paraan, ang mahalaga ay iisa ang hangarin, isang mas maayos, patas, at mas matatag na sistema para sa susunod na henerasyon ng atletang Pilipino,” she added.

    The incident occurred on Monday, June 8, and has sent shockwaves through collegiate sports, prompting an outpouring of grief from teammates, coaches, alumni, sports officials, and basketball organizations nationwide. What was intended as a team-bonding exercise ahead of another UAAP campaign instead ended in tragedy, leaving one of the country’s most storied collegiate programs grieving the loss of two young athletes with bright futures.

     

    According to the Police Regional Office 3 (PRO-3), initial reports indicated that Adili and Baterbonia were swimming when they were caught by strong currents and swept into deeper waters. Rescue efforts were immediately launched, but both players were later declared dead. Authorities have since begun a full investigation into the incident and have urged the public to avoid speculation while the fact-finding process continues.

    “The UAAP, however, is closely following all the developments surrounding this tragic incident and carefully reviewing the findings of the ongoing investigations as they come. When completed, all the relevant information will be referred for a full and fair review to the Rules and Disciplinary Committee, composed of representatives from the seven other member schools.”

     

    The league also emphasized that it will review and, if necessary, revise existing safety protocols to better protect student-athletes.

     

    “The safety, well-being, and holistic development of student-athletes are the heart of the UAAP’s inherent mission. As a community of educational institutions, we are committed to learning from this tragedy and we will work together to strengthen safeguards that protect our student-athletes both on and off the field of play,” the statement added.

    The tragedy has been especially devastating for Ateneo given the contrasting yet equally promising paths of the two players.

     

    Adili, 21, had already carved out a meaningful role in the Blue Eagles rotation and was regarded as one of the program’s most promising young frontcourt talents. During UAAP Season 88, he appeared in 11 games and averaged 8.4 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per contest, providing energy, physicality, and consistent effort on both ends of the floor.

     

    Coaches and teammates often praised his work ethic and steady improvement, viewing him as a key piece in Ateneo’s rebuilding efforts following the departure of several championship-era standouts. Many within the program believed he had the potential to develop into one of the league’s premier big men in the coming seasons.

    The lawmaker emphasized that while athletic programs play an essential role in shaping young people through competition and discipline, educational institutions must ensure that student-athletes are protected both on and off the playing field.

     

    “This tragedy reminds us that while sports cultivates discipline, resilience, and excellence, institutions entrusted with the development of young athletes must likewise be held to the highest standards of safety, care, and accountability.

     

    “The goal is not merely to determine the circumstances of this particular tragedy, but to ensure that no other family has to endure the same loss. If this tragedy can happen in one of the country’s most respected educational institutions, then it is incumbent upon us to examine whether sufficient protections exist for student-athletes nationwide,” he concluded.

     

    For Ateneo, the loss extends far beyond basketball.
