  • Import Jamaal Franklin embraces second chance with Converge after disappointing first stint

Import Jamaal Franklin embraces second chance with Converge after disappointing first stint

Converge’s search for consistency in the 2026 PBA Governors’ Cup hit another roadblock after the FiberXers absorbed a narrow 110-107 defeat to the TNT Tropang Giga at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium on Tuesday, July 28.

The loss dropped Converge to its second defeat of the conference, but despite the disappointing result, the FiberXers found a major positive in the return of veteran import Jamaal Franklin, who made an immediate impact in his second stint with the franchise.

Franklin wasted little time reminding everyone why Converge brought him back, finishing with 30 points in his season debut while providing stability on both ends of the floor. His all-around performance kept the FiberXers within striking distance against the defending champions, although it ultimately wasn’t enough to prevent TNT from escaping with the victory.

The 35-year-old American is no stranger to Converge fans. He first joined the FiberXers during the 2023 Governors’ Cup and quickly established himself as one of the league’s premier imports. Over his first 10 games with the franchise, Franklin delivered a string of dominant performances, highlighted by a remarkable 57-point explosion against the Meralco Bolts that remains one of the highest-scoring games by an import in recent PBA history.

However, his initial stint came to an abrupt end after an underwhelming outing against Barangay Ginebra San Miguel prompted the franchise to replace him before the start of the playoffs.

Now back in a Converge uniform, Franklin expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to represent the team once again and is determined to help the FiberXers turn their campaign around.

“I mean, this was my first home playing out here. It was cut short, it was just some stuff that happened. But happy to be back, and just gotta keep going at it, and we just got to get better and hopefully get on the winning circle again,” Franklin said after the game.

Franklin was tapped to replace fellow import Jalen Hudson, whose inconsistent performances during the early stages of the conference prompted the team’s management to make a change. While there is still work to be done as Converge adjusts to its new lineup, Franklin believes the team’s potential will become more evident as they spend more time together.

The former NBA and international veteran also spoke highly of his teammates, particularly the players he already knew from his previous stint with the club.

“Alec and Justin are my guys, I have known them since my first time here. And I played against Mikey, he’s one hell of a player, he can score the ball, he’s one of the best scorers in this league. So it’s always good playing with a guy like Mikey. He’s a good scorer, he’s keeping composure, he practices hard. So just happy to have him on our side now, and happy to have the players we have right now.”

Franklin’s familiarity with several members of the roster could prove valuable as Converge looks to quickly build chemistry and bounce back from its slow start. His veteran leadership and scoring ability are expected to ease the offensive burden on the FiberXers while providing a reliable presence in crucial stretches of games.

Despite the loss to TNT, Converge showed flashes of competitiveness against one of the league’s top contenders, giving the team optimism that better performances are on the horizon with Franklin back in the fold.

The FiberXers will have an opportunity to return to the win column when they take on the NLEX Road Warriors at the SM Mall of Asia Arena on Saturday, August 1. With Franklin settling back into the system and the team looking to capitalize on his experience, Converge hopes to translate its encouraging signs into a much-needed victory as the Governors’ Cup eliminations continue.

The President specifically recognized the achievements of tennis sensation Alex Eala and the Philippine women’s national football team, pointing to their international accomplishments as evidence that Filipino athletes can excel against the world’s best when provided with proper training, support, and opportunities.

Following the address, Yulo took to Instagram to share his appreciation for being invited to the event, describing the experience as a privilege.

“Isang karangalan po ang makadalo sa State of the Nation Address (SONA) ngayong taon,” Yulo wrote.

The Olympic champion also welcomed the administration’s emphasis on sports, expressing hope that government initiatives would continue to create more opportunities for aspiring athletes throughout the country.

“Nakakatuwa pong marinig ang pagbibigay kahalagahan sa sports at sa mga atletang Pilipino. Sana po ay magpatuloy ang suporta sa pagpapaunlad ng sports sa ating bansa, para po mas marami pang kabataan ang mahikayat na mangarap, magsumikap, at ipakita ang ating talento.

“Proud to continue representing the Philippines. Para sa bayan,” he added.

Yulo’s message resonated with many sports fans, as the decorated gymnast has become one of the country’s most recognizable sporting figures following his historic achievements on the international stage.

Photos posted on social media showed Yulo interacting with several government leaders before and after the President’s address. Among those he met were House Speaker Faustino “Bojie” Dy III, Senator Risa Hontiveros, and other public officials, with the gymnast taking time to exchange greetings and pose for photographs.

The invitation reflects Yulo’s growing stature not only as one of the Philippines’ most successful athletes but also as one of the country’s leading ambassadors for sports.

His presence at the SONA comes at a crucial time as the Philippines continues to invest in grassroots sports development while preparing for several major international competitions over the next few years.

On the sporting front, Yulo is expected to once again spearhead the Philippine men’s artistic gymnastics team in the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan.

Gymnastics Association of the Philippines (GAP) President Cynthia Carrion-Norton has confirmed that Carlos and his younger brother, Eldrew Yulo, will lead the national squad in its bid for podium finishes at the continental showpiece.

The Yulo brothers are expected to headline a talented Philippine delegation looking to build on the country’s recent success in international gymnastics, with Carlos carrying the experience and confidence gained from years of competing against the world’s elite.

The artistic gymnastics competition at the 2026 Asian Games is scheduled to take place from September 21 to 25 at the Rainbow Hall of the Nagoya City General Gymnasium, where the Philippines hopes to once again contend for medals against Asia’s traditional gymnastics powerhouses.

As preparations continue for another busy international season, Yulo remains one of the country’s brightest medal hopes. His appearance at the State of the Nation Address not only highlighted the growing recognition of Filipino athletes at the highest levels of government but also underscored the important role sports continue to play in inspiring the next generation of champions.

With government officials reaffirming their commitment to developing Philippine sports and elite athletes like Yulo continuing to deliver on the world stage, the country’s sporting future appears to be on increasingly solid ground.

  • Cristiano Ronaldo set for TV debut in football drama alongside Thierry Henry

Cristiano Ronaldo set for TV debut in football drama alongside Thierry Henry

Cristiano Ronaldo is preparing to add another chapter to his remarkable career, with the global football icon reportedly set to make his official television acting debut in a new drama series centered on the world of football agents.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest players in football history, Ronaldo has built a legacy that extends far beyond his achievements on the pitch. Over a professional career spanning more than two decades, the Portuguese superstar has won league titles in England, Spain, and Italy, lifted the UEFA Champions League five times, claimed the UEFA European Championship with Portugal, and collected five Ballon d’Or awards as one of the sport’s most decorated individuals.

Off the field, Ronaldo has become one of the most influential athletes in the world. His global appeal has translated into enormous commercial success, with the 41-year-old consistently ranking among the highest-paid athletes in history through a combination of playing contracts, endorsement deals, and business ventures. He also boasts the largest social media following of any footballer, making him one of the most recognizable sporting figures on the planet.

Now, following Portugal’s disappointing campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Ronaldo is set to venture further into the entertainment industry.

According to multiple reports, the Portugal captain is collaborating with acclaimed British filmmaker Matthew Vaughn on Day 1s, a scripted television drama that explores the high-stakes world of football agents in the United Kingdom.

The series revolves around fictional football agent Stanley Dalton, whose career navigates the pressures, negotiations, rivalries, and behind-the-scenes dealings that shape the modern football industry. While football fans are accustomed to seeing the drama unfold on the pitch, Day 1s aims to provide a look at the business side of the sport, where player transfers, contract negotiations, and career-defining decisions often take center stage.

The project has assembled an impressive lineup of personalities from both sports and entertainment. Former France striker Thierry Henry is reportedly involved in the production, while British rapper Dave also joins the cast. Award-winning actor Damian Lewis is expected to play one of the leading roles.

The concept has already drawn comparisons to The Playoffs, the recent Brazilian drama series that focused on the life of a football agent and the challenges of managing elite players in the increasingly competitive sports industry.

For Ronaldo, Day 1s represents more than just an acting opportunity.

The football legend will also serve as an executive producer through UR Marv Studios, the production company he co-founded with Vaughn. The company was established with the goal of producing sports-focused films and television content that combines cinematic storytelling with authentic sporting narratives.

Before announcing Day 1s, UR Marv Studios had already completed two sports-related feature films, making the television series another significant milestone in the company’s growing portfolio.

Vaughn’s involvement adds further credibility to the project. The British filmmaker has built a reputation as one of the industry’s most successful action directors, with credits including Layer Cake, Stardust, Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class, Argylle, and the globally successful Kingsman franchise.

His experience in blending action, humor, and compelling storytelling is expected to bring a distinctive style to Day 1s, particularly as the series explores the competitive and often unpredictable world of professional football.

Ronaldo’s move into television is the latest example of his efforts to expand his influence beyond football. In recent years, he has invested in a range of business ventures spanning hospitality, fitness, fashion, technology, and media, demonstrating his ambition to build a lasting legacy after his playing career comes to an end.

Although no official release date has been announced, anticipation is already building around Day 1s, with football supporters eager to see one of the sport’s greatest-ever players step into a new role in front of the camera.

Whether on the football pitch or in the entertainment industry, Ronaldo continues to prove that his ambitions extend well beyond the boundaries of the game that made him a global icon.

  • Powerhouse Strong Group-Pilipinas eyes historic Jones Cup three-peat behind Dave Ildefonso, returning core

Powerhouse Strong Group-Pilipinas eyes historic Jones Cup three-peat behind Dave Ildefonso, returning core

Strong Group-Pilipinas is once again bringing back a battle-tested core as it sets its sights on making history in the William Jones Cup.

Headlined by Dave Ildefonso, several key contributors from the wsquad’s previous championship runs will return as the Philippines looks to capture an unprecedented third consecutive Jones Cup title, further cementing the country’s dominance in one of Asia’s longest-running international basketball tournaments.

Joining Ildefonso are familiar faces Kiefer Ravena, Jason Brickman, Rhenz Abando, Angelo Kouame, Geo Chiu, and reigning NCAA MVP Allen Liwag, giving Strong Group-Pilipinas one of its deepest and most experienced rosters yet. Their chemistry, built over multiple international campaigns, is expected to be one of the team’s biggest advantages as it enters the tournament with a target on its back.

Unlike most teams that enter the Jones Cup hoping to contend, Strong Group-Pilipinas arrives in Taiwan with far greater expectations. After winning back-to-back championships and dominating much of last year’s tournament, anything less than another gold medal would be viewed as a disappointment for a program that has quickly established itself as the tournament’s benchmark.

The Philippines has long been one of the most successful nations in Jones Cup history, and Strong Group has proudly carried that tradition in recent years. With consecutive titles already under its belt, the squad now has the opportunity to accomplish something no Philippine team has ever achieved—a third straight championship.

Ildefonso, meanwhile, is expected to take on an even bigger role after continuing to develop his game over the past year. Surrounded by seasoned veterans and proven international performers, the versatile wing gives Strong Group another reliable scoring option while also providing length and defensive versatility on both ends of the floor.

Team officials have made no secret of their ambitions. Retaining the championship remains the only objective, and bringing back much of last year’s roster reflects the organization’s belief that continuity and familiarity can once again lead to success.

Of course, defending a title is never easy. Every opponent will be eager to knock off the reigning champions, making Strong Group-Pilipinas the team everyone will be chasing throughout the competition.

Still, with an experienced core, proven international pedigree, and a roster loaded with talent, Strong Group-Pilipinas enters the tournament as the clear favorite. Now, the challenge is turning those lofty expectations into another championship—and completing a historic Jones Cup three-peat.

  • Sedrick Barefield dreams of Gilas call-up after making Asian Games shortlist

Sedrick Barefield dreams of Gilas call-up after making Asian Games shortlist

Blackwater Bossing guard Sedrick Barefield admitted that representing the Philippines on the international stage would be a dream come true after being included in the initial pool of players being considered for the men’s national basketball team for the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan.

The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) recently announced the first list of candidates for Gilas Pilipinas, with Barefield among the 30 players named as part of the preliminary pool. The versatile guard, however, revealed that he only learned about his inclusion after SBP executive director Erika Dy mentioned his name during her appearance at the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Forum on Tuesday, July 28.

Barefield welcomed the development, saying the chance to represent the country in a major international competition would be a significant milestone in his career.

“I’m hoping that it’s a possibility. It will be a dream come true, just to go out there and compete with those guys representing the country. It would mean the world, it would mean everything. That’s high-level basketball that you always want to be a part of, that you dream of being a part of,” Barefield told reporters.

The 29-year-old guard has been one of the most consistent performers for the Blackwater Bossing since joining the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), using his versatility, shooting ability, and playmaking skills to make an impact on both ends of the floor.

Although Barefield has Filipino heritage, he is currently unable to suit up as a local player for Gilas Pilipinas in FIBA-sanctioned competitions because of eligibility requirements. However, the 2026 Asian Games follow different rules, with athletes only required to hold a Philippine passport to be eligible to compete.

That distinction opens the door for Barefield to potentially make his national team debut in Nagoya, giving him the opportunity to share the court with some of the country’s top basketball talents while representing the Philippines on one of Asia’s biggest sporting stages.

Barefield’s basketball journey has taken him across different levels and countries, building a résumé that includes experiences in some of the world’s competitive basketball leagues. Born to a Filipino mother and American father, he developed his game in California before making the jump toward professional basketball.

After completing high school in California, Barefield declared for the 2019 National Basketball Association (NBA) Draft but went undrafted. Despite missing out on being selected, he earned an opportunity to showcase his talent by signing with the Oklahoma City Thunder for the NBA Summer League.

He later continued his development with the Oklahoma City Blue, the Thunder’s NBA G League affiliate, gaining valuable experience against high-level competition.

Since then, Barefield has built a reputation as a well-traveled professional, playing in various leagues across the globe. His career has included stints in Lithuania, Greece, Taiwan, and Guinea before eventually making his way to the PBA, where he has become one of Blackwater’s key contributors.

His international experience and ability to adapt to different basketball systems could make him an attractive option for the national team setup as SBP continues evaluating players ahead of the Asian Games.

While his inclusion in the initial pool does not guarantee a spot on the final roster, Barefield remains hopeful that he will get the opportunity to wear the Philippine colors and compete alongside Gilas Pilipinas.

For a player who has spent years chasing opportunities around the world, a place on the national team would represent another defining chapter in his basketball journey—one that allows him to give back by representing the country on the international stage.

  • SBP submits initial Gilas pool for 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya

SBP submits initial Gilas pool for 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya

The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) has taken the first step toward assembling Gilas Pilipinas’ roster for the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan, submitting an initial list of candidates for the men’s basketball competition as the national team begins preparations for its title defense.

SBP executive director Erika Dy confirmed that the federation has already forwarded a preliminary pool of players to the Asian Games organizing committee. However, she stressed that the list remains subject to changes, with the final 12-man lineup that will represent the Philippines under head coach Tim Cone still yet to be determined.

“There was already a short list that was submitted. But it’s not yet the final list because, just like in the Southeast Asian Games, there can still be changes in the end,” Dy said during her appearance at the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Forum on Tuesday, July 28.

OKBET is Asia’s most trusted and popular online sports gaming platform. Visit us on OKBET to stay up to date with all sports news from around the world.

The initial submission reportedly includes more than 30 players, with the core members of the current Gilas Pilipinas program included in the pool. According to Dy, the list reflects the federation’s commitment to maintaining continuity while also keeping its options open as the coaching staff evaluates player availability, form, and team needs leading up to the continental competition.

Despite having a strong group of candidates, Gilas Pilipinas will be forced to deal with the absence of some key contributors due to scheduling conflicts. Dy confirmed that Dwight Ramos and AJ Edu are unlikely to be available for the Asian Games after both players are committed to their respective teams in the Japan B.League.

The two Filipino standouts are scheduled to participate in the B.League Manila Games showcase on September 9 and 10, a commitment that overlaps with the Asian Games calendar.

“Out of that 30-plus, the mainstays of Gilas are there. I think it’s safe to say that Dwight and AJ won’t be available because they are playing in the B.League Manila Games. So there’s a schedule conflict with the Asian Games,” Dy explained.

Ramos and Edu have been important pieces of the national team setup in recent years. Ramos has emerged as one of Gilas’ most reliable perimeter players, providing scoring, defense, and leadership, while Edu has been a key presence in the frontcourt because of his athleticism and defensive ability. Their potential absence means Cone and his staff may have to explore different combinations heading into the tournament.

Still, the SBP remains confident that the Philippines will have a competitive roster capable of challenging for another championship. The core of the national team program that delivered success in recent international competitions remains intact, giving Gilas a strong foundation heading into Nagoya.

Gilas Pilipinas enters the 2026 Asian Games as the defending men’s basketball champion after ending a historic 61-year drought in the previous edition held in Hangzhou, China.

The Philippines captured the gold medal in 2023 with a memorable 70-60 victory over Jordan in the finals, a win that marked the country’s first Asian Games basketball title since 1962. Led by a combination of veteran leadership, young talent, and strong team chemistry, Gilas produced one of the most significant moments in Philippine basketball history.

With the pressure of defending its crown, Gilas Pilipinas will now begin the process of finalizing its roster while navigating player availability and international commitments. The SBP is expected to continue monitoring candidates before Cone and his coaching staff make the final decisions on the players who will carry the Philippine flag in Nagoya.

As preparations continue, the national team will look to build on the momentum of its Asian Games triumph and prove once again that the Philippines remains one of the strongest basketball nations in the region.

  • PBA considers bringing Governors’ Cup action to SM Seaside Cebu Arena

PBA considers bringing Governors’ Cup action to SM Seaside Cebu Arena

The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) could soon bring its biggest games to Cebu after Commissioner Willie Marcial revealed that the league is exploring the possibility of staging games—and potentially even the finals of the ongoing 2026 Governors’ Cup—at the newly inaugurated SM Seaside Cebu Arena.

Marcial made the revelation after attending the grand opening of the state-of-the-art facility, which is now regarded as the largest indoor arena in the Visayas. The venue, reportedly built at a cost of around PHP 7 billion, is expected to become one of the country’s premier destinations for major sporting events, concerts, and entertainment spectacles.

Located within the expansive SM Seaside City Cebu complex, the seven-story arena boasts a seating capacity of approximately 16,000 for sporting events, with the ability to accommodate up to 25,000 spectators depending on the event configuration. The venue also features modern amenities, spacious locker rooms, athlete support facilities, and a dedicated practice court, making it well-equipped to host high-profile basketball tournaments.

Marcial admitted that he was impressed after touring the facility and said the league is seriously considering bringing PBA games to Cebu as early as the ongoing Governors’ Cup.

“Sobrang laki at sobrang ganda. Balak talaga natin maglaro dun. Tingnan natin kung kakayanin sa finals. Kung hindi naman, pwedeng next season na. Malaki yung dugout and locker area. At may practice court siya,” Marcial told reporters.

His comments have fueled excitement among basketball fans in Cebu, a province widely regarded as one of the country’s strongest basketball hotbeds. The PBA has long enjoyed passionate support whenever it stages out-of-town games in Cebu, and the opening of a world-class arena provides the league with an opportunity to bring marquee matchups to a larger audience outside Metro Manila.

Should scheduling and logistical requirements align, the Governors’ Cup Finals could become one of the first major sporting events to be held at the arena. If that proves unfeasible, Marcial indicated that the venue is expected to become part of the league’s regular rotation beginning with the next PBA conference.

The arena’s opening also aligns with the PBA’s continued efforts to expand its footprint across the country. In recent years, the league has increased the number of provincial games to reconnect with fans outside the capital while showcasing Philippine basketball in modern venues capable of hosting large crowds.

Beyond the PBA, the SM Seaside Cebu Arena is already set to play a major role in the country’s sporting calendar. The facility has been selected as one of the host venues for the 2027 FIBA Women’s Asia Cup, which the Philippines will stage in July next year. Hosting the continental tournament is expected to further strengthen the country’s reputation as a destination for international basketball events.

The arena is also expected to become a major entertainment hub, with several internationally acclaimed artists and performers already scheduled to hold concerts there later this year.

With its modern design, world-class facilities, and strategic location in the Queen City of the South, the SM Seaside Cebu Arena is poised to become a new home for Philippine sports. For the PBA, the venue offers an opportunity to bring the excitement of professional basketball closer to the passionate Cebuano fan base while elevating the league’s game-day experience in one of the country’s most vibrant basketball markets.

Tagaytay Velodrome to host 10th Senior Aerobic Gymnastics Asian Championships

The Tagaytay City Velodrome is preparing for a remarkable transformation as the country’s only velodrome temporarily trades cycling for gymnastics to host the 10th Senior Aerobic Gymnastics Asian Championships from August 4 to 7.

The four-day continental competition will bring together more than 400 athletes, coaches, officials, and delegates from 11 Asian nations, making it one of the biggest international sporting events ever staged in Tagaytay City.

While the venue is traditionally home to cycling competitions, organizers have converted the facility into a world-class gymnastics arena capable of accommodating around 3,000 spectators. The makeover underscores the Philippines’ growing capability to host major international sporting events in a variety of disciplines.

Gymnastics Association of the Philippines (GAP) President Cynthia Carrion said the decision to hold the championships at the Tagaytay City Velodrome came after Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) President Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino, who also served as Tagaytay mayor, offered the venue for the prestigious event.

“Philippine Olympic Committee President and former Tagaytay Mayor Abraham Tolentino graciously offered us the Tagaytay City Velodrome for our event. After inspecting it, we gratefully accepted his offer,” Carrion said during a media briefing.

The championship will feature elite aerobic gymnasts from Cambodia, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Mongolia, Thailand, Vietnam, and host nation Philippines as they compete for continental honors.

The event is expected to showcase some of Asia’s finest aerobic gymnastics talent, with athletes competing in various individual, mixed pair, trio, group, and aerobic dance categories. It also provides Filipino gymnasts with the rare opportunity to compete against world-class opposition on home soil while enjoying the support of local fans.

Carrion expressed her gratitude to the local government of Tagaytay for its unwavering support, emphasizing that staging an event of this magnitude would not have been possible without the cooperation of both national and local officials.

“We would like to thank POC President Bambol, Mayor Brent, and Vice Mayor Agnes for their all-out support in the hosting of this big international gymnastics event,” she said.

Beyond the competition itself, the championships are also expected to provide a significant boost to tourism and the local economy. Hundreds of international visitors are expected to spend several days in Tagaytay, one of the country’s most popular tourist destinations known for its cool climate, scenic views of Taal Volcano, and vibrant dining scene.

Carrion noted that visiting athletes and officials will have plenty of opportunities to experience the city’s attractions outside of competition, adding that the local government has encouraged businesses to warmly welcome the international delegation.

“There is a variety of opportunities that our athletes and delegates for the 10th Senior Aerobic Championships can choose from when they visit Tagaytay, a beautiful and inspiring environment where they will return home with wonderful memories of their visit. The Tagaytay City government has also instructed commercial establishments like restaurants and cafes to give our participants discounts and other privileges,” she said.

The event also aligns with the Philippine Sports Commission’s long-term vision of positioning the country as a premier destination for international sporting events in Southeast Asia. By successfully hosting continental and global competitions, the PSC hopes to further elevate the Philippines’ reputation as a capable organizer while generating economic activity through sports tourism.

PSC Chairman Patrick Gregorio praised the Gymnastics Association of the Philippines for once again taking on the challenge of organizing a major international tournament, citing the federation’s proven track record in delivering world-class events.

“This is another noteworthy project hosted by GAP under the leadership of Tita Cynthia. The association has already shown its superb ability in hosting and organizing international events. We can expect GAP to raise the bar higher with its hosting of the 10th Senior Aerobic Gymnastics Asian Championships,” Gregorio said.

With the Tagaytay City Velodrome set to welcome Asia’s top aerobic gymnasts, the Philippines will once again find itself on the international sporting stage, showcasing not only its organizational capabilities but also its commitment to promoting gymnastics and strengthening sports tourism through world-class events.

  • TNT replaces Darius Days with Rahlir Hollis-Jefferson in Governors’ Cup shake-up

TNT replaces Darius Days with Rahlir Hollis-Jefferson in Governors’ Cup shake-up

TNT Tropang Giga have made a significant change to their roster just four games into the 2026 PBA Governors’ Cup, bringing back familiar reinforcement Rahlir Hollis-Jefferson in an effort to strengthen their campaign after an inconsistent start to the conference.

The Tropang Giga have opened the tournament with a 2-2 win-loss record, a performance that has shown flashes of their championship pedigree but also exposed areas that require immediate improvement. While the team managed to grind out a dramatic 110-107 comeback victory over the Converge FiberXers on Tuesday, July 28, at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium, management wasted little time in making a change at the import position.

Team manager Jojo Lastimosa confirmed after the victory that the franchise has decided to replace Darius Days with Rahlir Hollis-Jefferson, who has already arrived in the Philippines.

“He is already in town,” Lastimosa told reporters after the game, confirming the move that had been widely anticipated following TNT’s uneven performances in the opening stretch of the conference.

Rahlir’s return gives TNT a familiar face who already understands the team’s system and the demands of playing in the PBA. The older brother of former TNT star import Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, Rahlir previously suited up for the Tropang Giga during the 2023-24 Commissioner’s Cup after stepping in as an injury replacement for his younger brother.

Although his stint with TNT was relatively brief, Rahlir quickly demonstrated his versatility, defensive intensity, and willingness to embrace the team’s culture. Those qualities made him a logical choice as the organization searched for a proven replacement capable of making an immediate impact.

The decision to part ways with Days comes after a disappointing four-game spell in which the American import struggled to meet expectations. Despite arriving with an impressive basketball résumé, Days failed to consistently provide the production TNT expected from its primary reinforcement.

His most difficult outing came against Converge, where he was limited to just 10 points while shooting 10-of-19 from the field, a performance that highlighted concerns about his conditioning and mobility. Throughout TNT’s opening games, Days often looked a step behind on both ends of the floor, making it difficult for the Tropang Giga to establish their preferred pace and offensive rhythm.

Head coach Chot Reyes did not mince words when discussing the reasons behind the decision.

“Darius is not the Darius Days that we had a couple of years ago. He is completely overweight, out of shape and I think it shows in the game and affects the play of our locals,” Reyes said.

The veteran coach emphasized that an import’s role extends beyond scoring, noting that the team’s overall execution and chemistry had suffered because Days was unable to provide the energy and consistency expected from a foreign reinforcement.

With Rahlir now back in the fold, TNT hopes to inject new life into a squad looking to establish momentum in a highly competitive Governors’ Cup. His familiarity with Reyes’ system should ease the transition, allowing him to contribute immediately on both offense and defense.

The timing of the move is also crucial, as the Tropang Giga face one of the conference’s biggest challenges in their next assignment against the San Miguel Beermen on Saturday, August 1, at the SM Mall of Asia Arena. With Rahlir expected to be available for selection, TNT will be banking on his experience, versatility, and defensive presence to help the team build on its comeback victory over Converge and climb further up the standings.

For TNT, the change represents more than simply replacing one import with another. It is an early statement that the organization remains committed to competing for another championship and is willing to make decisive moves to keep its title aspirations firmly on track.

  • Ferdinand Marcos hails Alex Eala, Filipinas as inspirations for Filipinos in SONA

Ferdinand Marcos hails Alex Eala, Filipinas as inspirations for Filipinos in SONA

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. underscored the growing importance of sports in nation-building during his fifth State of the Nation Address (SONA), highlighting the achievements of tennis star Alex Eala and the Philippine women’s national football team while reaffirming the government’s commitment to strengthening sports development across the country.

Speaking before a joint session of Congress at the Batasang Pambansa Complex in Quezon City on Monday, July 27, Marcos pointed to the accomplishments of Filipino athletes on the international stage as proof that the country can compete with the world’s best when provided with the necessary support and opportunities.

Among those singled out by the President was tennis sensation Alex Eala, whose rapid rise has made her one of the country’s most recognizable sporting figures and an inspiration to aspiring Filipino athletes.

Marcos expressed hope that Eala’s success would encourage more young Filipinos to participate not only in tennis but in sports in general, emphasizing the role athletics plays in promoting both excellence and healthy lifestyles.

“Sa nag-uumapaw nating suporta kay Alex Eala, sana ay marami ang ma-engganyo para matuto at maglaro hindi lamang ng tennis, kundi ng iba pang sport. Mahalaga rin sa atin ang sports. Itinaas natin nang triple ang suporta natin dito. Hindi lamang dahil sa aliw na hatid nito, kundi para sa kalusugan,” Marcos said during his address.

The President also revealed that government support for sports has tripled under his administration, reiterating that investment in athletics goes beyond producing champions and also contributes to improving the overall health and well-being of Filipinos.

Eala has become one of Philippine sports’ brightest stars following a series of breakthrough performances on the international stage. Widely regarded as Southeast Asia’s top young tennis player, the 21-year-old continues to raise the country’s profile in world tennis through her historic achievements.

Her most recent milestone came at Wimbledon 2026, where she became the first Filipino in the Open Era to reach both the third and fourth rounds of the prestigious Grand Slam tournament. The achievement further cemented her status as one of the country’s premier athletes and strengthened hopes that she can continue making history on the WTA Tour.

Marcos also reserved special praise for the Philippine women’s national football team, popularly known as the Filipinas, after the squad secured qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The achievement marks the second consecutive edition of the tournament in which the Philippines has earned a place, following the country’s historic debut at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup—a landmark moment that significantly elevated the profile of women’s football in the nation.

“Sa halimbawa ng Filipinas women’s football team, sana rin ay mas sumikat pa ang football sa ating bansa at marami ang maglaro. Balang-araw, baka makasali na ang Pilipinas sa World Cup,” Marcos added.

The President expressed hope that the Filipinas’ continued success would inspire more young Filipinos to embrace football, with the long-term dream of seeing the country become a regular participant in football’s biggest international competitions.

Following the President’s remarks, the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) issued a statement thanking Marcos for recognizing the achievements of Philippine football on one of the country’s biggest political stages.

“Lubos na nagpapasalamat ang Philippine Football Federation sa paghirang ni Pangulong Bongbong Marcos sa Philippine football sa kanyang State of the Nation Address. Sama-sama nating iangat ang Pilipinas sa global stage ng football! Tayo naman, Pilipinas,” the federation said.

The Filipinas are now preparing for another major international challenge as they turn their attention to the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan. Drawn into a difficult Group G, the Philippines will face regional powerhouse China, as well as Uzbekistan and Hong Kong, as they seek another memorable campaign on the continental stage.

Marcos’ recognition of both Eala and the Filipinas reflects the growing prominence of Philippine sports in recent years. From tennis courts to football pitches, Filipino athletes continue to make significant strides internationally, and their achievements have increasingly become a source of national pride. With government support for sports receiving greater emphasis, the hope is that more young Filipinos will be inspired to pursue athletic excellence and carry the country’s flag onto the global stage.
