KarlTzy headlines Philippine squad as top-ranked nation eyes Esports Nations Cup crown

The Philippines will head to the inaugural Esports Nations Cup carrying more than just an elite roster—it will arrive as the tournament’s highest-ranked Mobile Legends: Bang Bang nation.

With the ENC set to take place from November 2 to 29 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, the Mobile Legends competition will unfold during the final stretch of the event from November 25 to 29, where the country’s collection of world champions and international stars will attempt to translate its global success into a national team title.

The Esports Nations Cup officially unveiled the participating rosters, confirming the Philippines as one of the 16 nations that received a direct invitation based on the ENC Rankings.

A total of 32 countries will compete in the MLBB tournament, with 16 earning automatic berths through the rankings. Joining the Philippines among the directly invited teams are Indonesia, Myanmar, Turkiye, Cambodia, Germany, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, China, Mongolia, Brazil, India, the United States, Canada, and Malaysia.

The Philippine squad draws its strength from some of the country’s biggest professional organizations and internationally recognized talents.

Leading the charge is Team Liquid PH’s decorated jungler Karl “KarlTzy” Nepomuceno, who returns to international competition eager to bounce back after the team’s brief campaign in the Mid-Season Cup at the Esports World Cup.

Team Falcons PH will also have a major presence on the national team despite falling short of a podium finish in the MSC. EXP laner David “Flap” Canon and gold laner Marco “Super Marco” Requitiano have been selected to represent the country as they look to deliver stronger results on the international stage.

Joining KarlTzy from Team Liquid PH are veteran roamer Jaypee “Jaypee” Dela Cruz and dependable midlaner Alston “Sanji” Pabico, giving the Philippine lineup an experienced core that has competed at the highest level of professional Mobile Legends.

The roster becomes even more formidable with the inclusion of Duane “Kelra” Pillas and Kairi “Kairi” Rayosdelsol, two Filipino stars currently playing as imports for ONIC Indonesia and regarded among the world’s best in their respective roles.

Collectively, those achievements helped the Philippines secure the No. 1 position in the ENC Rankings with 12,550 points, placing the country ahead of long-time regional rival Indonesia in second and Myanmar in third.

The ENC Rankings are determined by the cumulative points earned by players through their performances in international tournaments, regional competitions, and select events, including the most recent Mid-Season Cup in Paris.

The Mobile Legends event is expected to be one of the marquee competitions of the inaugural Esports Nations Cup, which will also feature some of the biggest titles in competitive gaming, including Honor of Kings, League of Legends, Dota 2, PUBG Mobile, and Valorant.

Armed with one of the deepest talent pools in the world and carrying the distinction of being the tournament’s highest-ranked nation, the Philippines will enter Riyadh with one clear objective—turning its individual accolades into a championship performance on the international stage.

UP strengthens rebuilding bid with five new recruits for upcoming UAAP campaigns

As the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons focus on their UAAP Season 89 campaign, the program has already laid the foundation for the future after securing five new recruits who are expected to play key roles once they become eligible in Season 90 following the mandatory one-year residency period.

Leading the incoming class are Fil-Am twins Heart and Hannah Lising, who arrive after playing for Los Angeles Mission College. Although they will spend their first year developing within the program, the sisters are expected to become integral pieces of UP’s long-term plans.

Joining them is 5-foot-6 Fil-Am guard Kristan Yumul, whose resume already includes several notable appearances for the Philippine national team despite her young age.

Yumul was instrumental in Gilas Pilipinas Girls Under-16’s successful campaign in the 2022 FIBA U16 Women’s Asian Championship, averaging an impressive 21.6 points per game as the Philippines earned promotion to Division A.

Later that year, she suited up for the Gilas Under-18 squad and contributed 10.6 points per game in another promotion-winning campaign at the FIBA U18 Women’s Asian Championship.

Her steady rise continued in 2024 when she debuted for the Gilas Pilipinas women’s national team. Most recently, she represented the country in the FIBA 3×3 Nations League – Asia Pacific Conference, further strengthening an already impressive basketball résumé before joining UP.

The Fighting Maroons also welcomed 19-year-old Fil-Aussie forward Lecita Sherriffs, who, like the other newcomers, will spend a season in residency before becoming eligible.

Completing the recruiting class is 18-year-old Nigerian Okesola Victoria Olauluwa, whose arrival comes at an opportune time after the UAAP approved the inclusion of two foreign student-athletes in a team’s lineup. Once eligible, she is expected to join fellow Nigerian Blessing Chuole Francis to give UP additional size and depth in future seasons.

The additions mark another step in the program’s transition under head coach Eric Altamirano, who emphasized the importance of continuously strengthening the roster.

“Siyempre, recruitment naman ang lifeblood of any program, and we’re just happy for the trust these players gave us, even as they wait for a year before being able to play,” said Altamirano.

While the newcomers patiently wait for their opportunity in Season 90, UP’s attention remains on the immediate challenge of UAAP Season 89.

The Fighting Maroons will lean on veterans Louna Ozar and Camille Nolasco, along with promising recruits Kennan Ka, Ashley Loon, and Blessing Chuole Francis, as they attempt to return to the Final Four after finishing fifth and seventh in the last two UAAP women’s basketball tournaments.

Altamirano also stressed that every member of the growing roster will have an opportunity to contribute as the program continues its rebuild.

“What we can promise naman is all of them will be given the chance to prove themselves, kasi kailangan natin lahat sila,” he said.

UP hopes its latest recruiting class will help restore the Fighting Maroons as contenders in the coming years after the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigresses captured the UAAP Season 88 women’s basketball championship by dethroning the defending champion National University Lady Bulldogs.

Sedrick Barefield fuels Blackwater’s revenge bid, powers Bossing past Phoenix

After ending the opening round of the PBA Governor’s Cup with a frustrating 93-102 defeat to the Fuel Masters, the Bossing made sure history would not repeat itself.

They turned the tables on Wednesday night, using a dominant fourth-quarter finish to pull away for a 106-100 victory at the Smart Araneta Coliseum and breathe new life into their campaign.

The win carried extra weight for Blackwater, which had dropped three straight games to close out the first round and entered the second phase of Group B competition needing a momentum-shifting performance.

Sedrick Barefield made certain his second meeting with Phoenix would be remembered for different reasons.

The sophomore guard, who was limited to just 10 points on 5-of-19 shooting in their previous encounter, erupted for 26 points this time. Eleven of those came in the final period as Blackwater unleashed a decisive 29-14 closing run that erased Phoenix’s hopes of completing another victory over the Bossing.

“I feel like I had some of my best games against Phoenix so not having a great game against them last time kind of put a bad taste in the mouth,’’ Barefield said.

His late-game takeover reflected the urgency inside the Blackwater locker room.

“We knew today was important, if we lost, it would become tough for us going forward. It was do or die for us so that set the tone,” the sophomore guard said.

While Barefield delivered the finishing blows, import Kentrell Barkley provided the steady production that kept the Bossing within striking distance throughout the contest. Barkley powered Blackwater with 34 points, 16 rebounds, and three assists, while RK Ilagan chipped in 15 points and six rebounds.

Head coach Pat Aquino praised Barefield’s growing influence after another clutch performance.

“I love what Sed has been doing. He is becoming the leader of the team. He took over,” Aquino said.

Phoenix, meanwhile, leaned heavily on import BJ Johnson, who exploded for a game-high 45 points in a losing effort. Ricci Rivero added 15 points, while Kai Ballungay finished with 12 as the Fuel Masters were unable to hold off Blackwater’s late surge.

Despite the setback, Phoenix remained tied with Rain or Shine atop Group B with a 4-2 win-loss record.

For Blackwater, the victory was more than just revenge. Improving to 3-3, the Bossing halted their three-game slide and put themselves back in the hunt as the second round gets underway.

Blackwater will try to build on its renewed momentum when it takes on Barangay Ginebra San Miguel on Sunday, August 9, at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

Alas Pilipinas Girls open historic FIVB U17 World Championship bid against China

After securing a historic berth through the Asian Volleyball Confederation Women’s U16 Championship, the Philippine squad departed from Sydney for Santiago, Chile, where it will make its long-awaited debut in the FIVB Volleyball Girls U17 World Championship from August 6 to 16.

Their first assignment, however, leaves little room for easing into the tournament. The Alas Girls will open their Pool B campaign against defending champion China on Thursday, August 6, at 8:00 a.m. (Philippine time), before taking on Mexico, Tunisia, Peru, and Venezuela in one of the tournament’s most competitive groups.

For University of Santo Tomas standout Megan Yesha Hernandez, the opportunity to compete against the world’s best makes every sacrifice worthwhile.

“Kahit sobra na yung pagod, mayroong kakalabasan na maganda. Kahit pagod na pagod, sulit pa rin yun kasi malaki naman po yung makukuha naming blessings,” Hernandez said.

Despite facing volleyball nations with far more international experience, the young Filipinas are approaching the tournament with confidence, believing that preparation and teamwork can bridge the gap.

“Pare-parehas lang po kami nagte-training at magkaka-age lang kami, so dapat huwag kami matakot at ipakita lang namin kung ano pong meron sa team,” she said.

Assistant coach Oliver Balse echoed that belief, saying the team’s technical ability gives it a chance to compete, even against opponents with a physical advantage.

“Sa age-group, kahit ibang lahi, pare-pareho pa. Merong taller players of course, but skills makakatapat tayo sa kanila,” Balse said.

The 24-team tournament is divided into four pools. Host Chile headlines Pool A, while Pool C features Argentina, Brazil, Croatia, Spain, Japan, and Poland. Pool D consists of Italy, South Korea, Algeria, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and Chinese Taipei.

Regardless of the results, the tournament represents a landmark moment for Philippine volleyball. As the country will compete in the FIVB Volleyball Girls U17 World Championship for the first time, giving a new generation of Filipina athletes the opportunity to measure themselves against the world’s elite.

Philippine Blu Girls set sights on elusive Asian Games podium finish

Years of near misses have only fueled the Philippine Blu Girls’ determination to finally break through on the Asian Games stage.

Fresh from a fifth-place finish at the WBSC Women’s Softball World Cup in Lima, Peru, the Philippine women’s national softball team is setting its sights on a podium finish at the 12th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.

The Blu Girls have reached the semifinals in three different editions of the Asian Games but have yet to convert those appearances into a medal.

After a heartbreaking campaign in Hangzhou, the team believes its latest international experience has prepared it for another shot at history.

Leading that mission is team captain Charlotte Sales, who joined co-captain Royevel Palma and assistant coach Rizza Bernardino at the Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum held at the Philippine Sports Commission on Tuesday to discuss the team’s preparations and expectations for the continental meet.

“This Asian Games pinapangako namin sa mga sarili namin na yung iyak namin happy tears naman this time,” Sales said.

The disappointment of the previous Asian Games remains a strong source of motivation for the squad after falling in the bronze medal match in Hangzhou.

“Yung huli (2023 Hangzhou) heartbroken pa rin kaming lahat kasi natalo pa rin kami sa bronze medal match,” she said.

That painful finish has strengthened the Blu Girls’ resolve as they prepare for another medal bid, this time carrying the confidence gained from their recent World Cup campaign.

The Filipinas placed fifth at the WBSC Women’s Softball World Cup in Peru, a result that reflected the progress made by the team following an extensive training camp in Japan.

“Naging maganda yung training camp kasi ang daming nag-improve (sa team). Maraming tinuro sa amin yung Japan team. Hindi sila madamot magbigay ng skills and anything na makakatulong sa amin,” Bernardino said.

The Blu Girls are currently training at the Polo Club before departing for another training camp in Japan on August 21. From there, they will head directly to Nagoya for the Asian Games.

Head coach Ana Santiago will lead a roster made up of 12 local players and five Filipino-Americans, a lineup Bernardino believes has earned its place through consistent performances on the international stage.

“Nagbi-base po talaga kami sa performance nila and sa world cup where lahat po sila ay nag-perform. So, alam po namin na best of the best na po ‘yong na-pick namin,” Bernardino said.

The road to a medal, however, will not come easy. Awaiting the Blu Girls are perennial powerhouse Japan, which is chasing a seventh straight Asian Games title, along with regional contenders China and Chinese Taipei.

Still, after years of falling just short, the Blu Girls are embracing another opportunity to rewrite their Asian Games story.

Philippine squads bow out early in KWC 2026 as they fall short of playoff push

The Philippines’ campaign at the Honor of Kings World Cup (KWC) 2026 came to an early conclusion after all three country’s representatives failed to secure a spot in the knockout stage.

Despite entering the tournament with high expectations, Blacklist International, Boom Esports, and Titan Esports Club struggled to overcome the world’s best Honor of Kings teams, ending their title hopes during the group stage.

Among the three representatives, Blacklist International delivered the deepest run and carried the country’s final hopes the longest.

Seeded in Group A, Blacklist started its main stage campaign on a strong note, sweeping Brazilian squad MIBR.LOS, 2-0, to secure a spot in the upper bracket.

However, the road became tougher as the Filipinos faced defending world champion AG.AL, which handed Blacklist a 0-2 loss and forced them into the lower bracket.

With elimination looming, Blacklist fought to keep its tournament alive against Team Vitality in the lower bracket final. The Filipino squad pushed the series to a deciding game but could not complete the comeback, falling 1-2 and ending the country’s last remaining chance of reaching the playoffs.

Blacklist’s exit marked the end of the longest KWC 2026 run among Philippine representatives, but it also highlighted the team’s resilience after entering the tournament through the play-in stage and recording the country’s best performance heading into the event.

Sandro Reyes, Daisuke Sato keep PMNT’s hopes alive after Thailand setback

The Philippine Men’s National Football Team saw its path to the next round become more difficult after suffering a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat to Thailand in the ASEAN Hyundai Cup on Tuesday at the New Clark City Athletics Stadium in Capas, Tarlac.

Sato felt the Philippines created enough opportunities to challenge Thailand but failed to capitalize on key moments.

The defeat left the Philippines in fourth place in Group B, behind Thailand, which remained at the top with nine points. Myanmar and Malaysia currently occupy second and third spots, respectively, with six points each.

Myanmar holds the advantage in the standings due to a stronger goal difference, carrying a plus-7 mark compared to Malaysia’s plus-3.

Myanmar boosted its semifinal chances earlier in the day after dominating Laos with a 7-2 victory, securing its second win of the tournament.

With qualification hanging in the balance, the Philippines now faces a must-fight situation in Malaysia, where the national team will look to prove that its campaign is far from over.

Tirrell Brown powers Titan Ultra past Macau despite De’Vondre Perry’s 45-point performance

Titan Ultra earned its second victory in the PBA Season 50 Governor’s Cup on Tuesday, surviving a determined comeback from the Macau Giant Pandas for a hard-fought 132-128 triumph at Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

The win improved the Giant Risers to a 2-5 record in Group A and provided a much-needed response after consecutive defeats, including a previous loss to Macau and another setback against San Miguel.

While Titan Ultra controlled most of the contest, the closing minutes tested the team’s composure as the Giant Pandas threatened to erase what was once a massive lead.

“We started strong, especially in the first quarter, then what happened to us, I think we relaxed a bit in the last minute of the second quarter, which is I know Macau will come back,” Titan Ultra head coach Rensy Bajar said.

Brown anchored the offense throughout the night, while Joshua Munzon provided steady support with 18 points, six rebounds, and five assists to help secure the win.

“That’s what I was telling them also in the huddle. The players just stuck together, especially since the second group was playing well,” Bajar added.

With the victory, Titan Ultra improved to 2-5 in the Group A standings and gained a valuable confidence boost heading into another difficult assignment.
